Corporate Redefinition
We're only semi organic with our food purchases at the seder home. But when I buy organic, I'd like it to be organic. This move by the industry packed FDA will, of course, hurt small local farms in addition to allowing non organic materials in organic food. you can take action here.

driving on a short stretch of the highway i pass 10's of 20's of dead animals.....who notices anymore as long as its not in the way. and when fatal traffic reports come in, i think the focus isn't on the deaths, but only if they are in the way...who cares.
cars are actually more dangerous than wars, maybe a bit less traumatic, but with the price of gas these days........so, some people die....as long as they are not in the way!!!

You Gotta Love Cheney
To me, the biggest shocker is he entered a battle zone under his own free will. Must have burned through all his deferments back in the 60s. Then again, maybe wars, just like kids, are different when they're your own. Yes they are! They're special. A gift from God. Landing at an undisclosed base near Baghdad, he descended the airplane steps wearing a flak jacket under his suit coat which seems to indicate his bullet repelling powers are diminishing.
But his powers of polarization remain intact. When Hugo Chavez called President Bush the devil at the UN, he was way out of line. Everybody knows Bush isn't the devil. Cheney is.

Hi,
I wanted to register an account with AAR so I could join the mighty throng of people critiquing the "new and improved" AAR. So far, after many attempts to do so, it won't let me register. At one point it said I already was registered and asked me for my email so it could send me a new password. The new password wouldn't work.
Is anyone else experiencing this? My paranoid fantasy is they are blocking any new registrants!

Aloe Vera
is a stimulant to the immune system, a powerful anti- inflammatory, an analgesic and is able to speed up cell growth. Aloe Vera contains a large number of mucopolysaccharides (basic sugars) which are found in every cell in the body. Aloe also contains large numbers of nutrients including vitamins E, C, B1, 2, 3, and 6 as well as iron, manganese, calcium and zinc. Seven essential amino acids and fatty acids are also found in Aloe Vera.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful, debilitating condition. It manifests itself as stiff, swollen joints with varying degrees of associated pain caused partly due to nerve damage and partly by the pressure of the swollen area.
The swollen area is normally red in colour and described as inflamed. The redness is caused by the blood supply to the ‘damaged’ area being increased.
Conventional treatment includes use of anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids, typically cortisone injections or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These certainly can ease the painful effects but unfortunately do not repair damaged tissues. There can also be undesirable side effects, particularly thinning of the skin and osteoporosis. Although many NSAIDs are available, each one has the potential to cause stomach ulcers.
Repairing damaged tissue by regenerating cells is a function at which Aloe Vera has been shown to be most successful. It not only relieves the painful symptoms but also helps to disperse damaged tissue – a type of detoxification process. Aloe Vera may be taken both internally as a juice or as a gel applied to the painful joint. Here Aloe Vera’s deep penetration may show benefit.
The degree of success with this treatment varies considerably from person to person. With some, relief and improved joint flexibility is virtually immediate – an apparent ‘magical’ cure, whereas in others, the process can take much longer and the degree of recovery may not be so great.
In any event, an important fact must be remembered: Aloe Vera has no known adverse side effects. It is an extract from the leaf of the Aloe Vera plant, known throughout the world where it grows naturally as the ‘First Aid Plant’, the ‘Burn Plant’, the ‘Miracle Plant’ and the ‘Medicine Plant’.
Is ORGANIC really that important?
I'm beginning to question this....it seems as though it is like kosher, nothing different but the prices are just higher....

Think Progress - Immigration
A Necessary First Step
The immigration compromise reached last week is a flawed deal, an attempt to "bridge the chasm between brittle hard-liners who want the country to stop absorbing so many outsiders, and those who want to give immigrants -- illegal ones, too -- a fair and realistic shot at the American dream." Yet it represents a critical first step towards fixing our shattered immigration system. Most importantly, it offers a solution for most of the 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the country today -- an opportunity to come out of the shadows, live and work without fear, and eventually become citizens. This process of earned citizenship is supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans (80 percent in the latest CNN poll), and is a key component of any sustainable and comprehensive immigration plan. Nevertheless, there are serious drawbacks in the compromise, and those must be addressed.

A LONG ROAD TO CITIZENSHIP: As predicted, the hard-line anti-immigrant advocates have already stamped the deal as "amnesty, amnesty and amnesty." But as Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said this week, "for some people, the only thing that would not be amnesty is mass deportation." This compromise offers legalization to undocumented immigrants only after a long and arduous road. To get to citizenship, eligible immigrants "would have to pay a total of $5,000 in fines and $2,000 in processing fees. Heads of households would have to return to their home country and reenter legally, and all family members would have to pass background checks." They would also have to "wait until certain 'trigger' conditions on border security are met and immigration backlogs are cleared." After four years, immigrants who want to renew these "Z visas" for four more years "would have to pass the English proficiency test given to those applying for citizenship." Many of these hurdles are unnecessary and burdensome, but a "winding and expensive path to citizenship is still a path."

...Most of Ms Joya's campaigning has been about women's rights, which have been severely eroded after initial gains made with the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Women activists, including the highest-ranking official dealing with female empowerment, Safia Amajan, have been murdered.
Ms Joya said: "Talking about women's rights in Afghanistan is a joke. There really have not been any fundamental changes, the Taliban were driven off by the Americans and the British but then they were allowed to be replaced by warlords who also simply cannot see women as equals."
She added: "Those of us who speak up are targets. My friends and colleagues have been assassinated. They have tried to kill me four times, the last attack was in Kabul which is the capital of this country which is supposed to be secure and democratic. And then if you try to speak up in parliament their first reaction is to try to gag you."

Latest CIA Gitmo Express plane identified outside Adelaide, Aust
May 22, 2007 -- The so-called "Australian Taliban," David Hicks, the Adelaide-born horse trader and kangaroo skinner imprisoned by the U.S. military for the past five years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after being picked up by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was flown to Australia from Guantanamo on a CIA rendition aircraft with an interesting history.
The Gulfstream Aerospace G550 that flew Hicks to Australia is registered to Time Works Leasing LLC, 223 Industrial Avenue, Teterboro, New Jersey. Time Works Leasing is being reported in some Australian media as a CIA front company. The Gulfstream's current tail number is N90AM. Previously, the plane's U.S. tail number was N592GA and it was transferred from Raven Acquisition Technologies of Washington state to Time Works on January 31, 2001. The plane has also been registered as tail number VP-CI, a Cayman Islands registration. However, FAA records indicate that the Gulfstream was transferred to the Caymans on April 5, 2006.

Citibank linked to Al Qaeda
May 22, 2007 -- WMR has received documents sent to one of the presidential campaigns from Leonard D. Wallace, a former business associate of former Enron Vice Chairman J. Clifford Baxter, that provides details of Al Qaeda and the 9/11 attacks being financed through Citigroup/Citibank. The document states that Baxter, who was to appear before a congressional committee to testify on Enron's dubious business practices, died from a reported suicide on January 18, 2002. According to the document received from Baxter's associate, the former Vice Chairman of Enron was planning to expose Citigroup's knowledge of Saudi banks, some of which it had a financial stake, were funding the terrorists who were responsible for carrying out the 9/11 attacks.
***
I know that Citi has large Saudi shareholders and that they were heavily involved with Enron in general. Their lawyers went before Congress several times regarding Enron, but nothing much came of it.
It wouldn't be that much of a leap that they would have knowledge of who (of their clients or owners) funded Al Qaeda.
Citibank and Al Qaeda .... [contd]
Wallace writes, "this cover-up of criminal misconduct has certainly been perpetrated both at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC and at Citigroup's 399 Park Avenue address in New York City." The document goes on to state, "Alberto Gonzales, and the U.S. Department of Justice that he heads, have successfully blocked any investigation of Citigroup, despite evidence that has been presented to them."
Wallace also writes, "I was brought into this spider web of greed and illegality by J. Clifford Baxter, a business associate of mine who was at one time vice chairman of Enron. Through his relationship with Robert Rubin at Citigroup's Chairman's Suite in New York City, in August 2001, I became privy to a series of business transactions planned by Citigroup that I began to realize were not only illegal but also aiding international terrorism from Saudi Arabia. I complained to Citigroup's senior executives and their board, and Cliff told me and others that he was going to expose this bank fraud of Citigroup and Saudi banks. Then, about 30 days after my first letter to Citigroup's chairman, Cliff suddenly died on January 18, 2002 from what is to this day still considered a very questionable suicide."

They're on the ropes and on the way out.
Citigroup and Al Qaeda .... [contd]
In a letter dated February 14, 2005 to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Wallace presents the background of his case: "I had a prior association in a $1.5 billion armored vehicle project with J. Clifford Baxter, the former Enron executive who died mysteriously in January 2002. As a result of that project, there are two public companies that can corroborate my participation and the integrity with which I conducted myself.
In August 2001, Cliff told me that he was involving me in securing $5 billion in loans and the subsequent investment of these funds. The collateral was to be located at Citibank Singapore, and he said that he would provide me with 4 pages of posting instructions."
The loan deal eventually was handed over to a Citibank Miami vice president -- on September 10, 2001. Wallace writes, "During the next 100 days, up until mid-December, Citigroup, through its headquarters and elsewhere, clearly orchestrated a well-coordinated conspiracy whose major impacts were going to be the defrauding of another bank and the acquisition of ill-gotten gains that would be received and/or distributed to others by Citigroup's senior management. It was represented to me by Citigroup officials and their documentation that the "others" included Account 98 activities, which I later learned were synonymous with the funding of terrorist organizations."
"Citigroup Singapore supplied a false inventory and authentication about Federal Reserve Bonds that supposedly were being used as collateral for the $5 billion loans. Citibank headquarters in Manhattan and Citibank Miami confirmed the authenticity of these bogus bonds. Marilyn Ware: Neo-con shrew exiles dissenting U.S. diplomat in F
May 22, 2007 -- Exiling U.S. diplomats to Iraq. Helsinki's newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, is reporting that William Davnie, the Press and Cultural Affairs Counselor at the United States Embassy in Helsinki, was transferred from Finland to Iraq in early April after he had policy differences with U.S. ambassador Marilyn Ware. Davnie speaks fluent Finnish, a language for which he will find little use in Baghdad.
WMR reported on Ware on Sept. 1, 2006: "One of the biggest wastes of money has been on the security upgrade to the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki, Finland. The embassy, located in the tranquil harbor area of Helsinki and facing picture post card views of ferries connecting Helsinki to Stockholm and yacht basins, has a double security fence complete with 360 degree pan, zoom, and tilt cameras disguised as street lamps. No other embassy in Helsinki, including the Russian and British embassies have any security so elaborate. Not surprisingly, the U.S. ambassador to Finland is a big time corporate donor to the GOP -- Marilyn Ware, the former Chairman of American Water Works Company, a firm that is attempting to privatize public sector water utilities around the world. A neo-con, Ware is an alumnus of the International Republican Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. She also was co-chair of Tom Ridge's gubernatorial campaign. Ware can rest assured that with the millions spent on the security at her embassy in Helsinki, she does not have to worry about attacks by passing Finnish, Swedish, or Estonian ferry passengers."

You're right. They are on the way out. It's very worn out.
Yessirreee, we support the troops... yessirree we do...
Marine Corps waited almost 18 months to act on priority request for bomb-proof vehicles to protect against IEDs in Iraq
It's not just that they didn't fill the order in 18 months, they didn't even ACT on the request to fill the order for 18 months. Our troops were dying every day from these IEDs, Bush was threatening to go to war with Iran over these IEDs, and these people didn't even think it was important to even start the process of getting them the protection they needed for a good year and a half.
And now we're going to give them another $100 billion to play with, no strings attached. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.
Let me repeat that last line...
I remember something about Citigroup and Saudi ties in the news a while back as well.... hmmmmmmmmm...
Nope. Not surprised t'all. We need an "enemy" (so we backhandedly finance them) so President Smirky's friends can make money off war. Not too hard to figger that out.

Bob Kerrey: Wrong Before Going Into Iraq And Still Wrong Today
On September 13, 2002, just as Congress was debating whether to approve a resolution providing President Bush the authority to use force against Iraq, former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-NE) wrote in the Wall Street Journal:
The real choice is between sustaining a military effort designed to contain Saddam Hussein and a military effort designed to replace him. In my mind the case for the second choice is overwhelming. … Regime change is the only way we can safely reduce our military commitment to the region.
In calling for regime change, Kerrey displayed an inability to comprehend the predictable chaos that would ensue. The intelligence community warned the Bush administration in January 2003 that regime change “would result in a deeply divided Iraqi society prone to violent internal conflict.”
In December 2003, an undeterred Kerrey claimed that he had been vindicated and Iraq war critics would ultimately be proven wrong. “Twenty years from now, we’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who says it wasn’t worth the effort,” he wrote.
Today, Bob Kerrey (D-NE), unrepentant over his failed Iraq war predictions, returns to the Wall Street Journal op-ed page to blast “American liberals.” In making his argument that democracy can indeed be imposed by military force (apparently by overlooking the Iraq war), Kerrey writes:
American liberals need to face these truths … [A] unilateral withdrawal from Iraq would hand Osama bin Laden a substantial psychological victory.
Perhaps he should have thought about that before advocating regime change as “the only way” to “safely reduce our military commitment to the region.” By staying in Iraq as an occupying force, the U.S. is helping inflame the terrorist movement. But Bob Kerrey has never understood that from the beginning, so why would he understand that now?
UPDATE: The National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez heralds Kerrey as “my favorite Democrat.”
Comment: so would taking the u.s. troops out of saudi arabia, as per obl’s request, but bush did that anyway.

U.S. Government Gave Airtime to Terrorists, Official Admits
"Al Hurra television, the U.S. government's $63 million-a-year effort at public diplomacy broadcasting in the Middle East, is run by executives and officials who cannot speak Arabic, according to a senior official who oversees the program.
That might explain why critics say the service has recently been caught broadcasting terrorist messages, including an hour-long tirade on the importance of anti-Jewish violence, among other questionable pieces."

Saudis big investers in CitiBank. Now they also bought GE Plastics. That is the biggest investment yet in an American company.
Saudis Buying GE Plastics
Parmy Olson, 05.18.07, 12:25 PM ET
LONDON - General Electric is set to sell its plastics division to Saudi Basic Industries, Saudi Arabia's largest industrial firm, an official source told Forbes.com on Friday. GE Plastics had originally been expected to sell for around $10 billion, but reports say the unit could fetch as much as $11 billion. A source close to the situation would not confirm the transaction's value but said the deal would be announced Monday.
General Electric's (nyse: GE - news - people ) plastics unit, which grossed $6.6 billion in revenue in 2006, has been up for sale since January, as part of the company's strategy to focus on high-growth areas such as energy, oil and gas equipment, as well as health care technology.
Shares in GE were up 53 cents, or 1.5%, at $37.05 in afternoon trading in New York on Friday.
The division has struggled amid inflation in natural gas and raw materials like benzene. Profits at the unit fell about 22%, to $674 million, last year, from $867 million in 2005.
"We have no comment on the media speculation," GE Plastics spokesman Jeff DeMarrais said. Saudi Basic Industries, known as SABIC, could not be reached for comment.
The Riyadh-based company is Saudi Arabia's largest non-oil company. Basic chemicals is its largest segment, accounting for about 40% of sales, while it also manufactures intermediates, polyolefins, PVC and polyester, fertilizers and metals.

New Docs confirm Gonzales lied!
New Documents Confirm Gonzales Lied To Senator About Plan To Install Rove Protege As U.S. Attorney
On Dec. 15, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) had their second phone conversation regarding the appointment of Karl Rove-protege Tim Griffin as the new U.S. attorney in Arkansas. In April 19 testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gonzales said that when Pryor objected to Griffin’s appointment, Gonzales promised to find a different candidate:
But I had told Senator Pryor: I wanted Mr. Griffin in for a period of time. Let’s see how he does.
And then in subsequent conversation with Mr. Pryor, I asked him: Can you support Mr. Griffin as the nominee?
And you know, he made it clear to me that he would not support him, by not giving me a yes answer, and so I said: Well, then I cannot recommend him to the White House, because if you don’t support him, I know he will not be confirmed. We’ll look for someone else, and give me names that we ought to consider.
Yet a newly released Feb. 8 e-mail by Assistant Attorney General William Moschella shows that Gonzales made the decision to appoint Griffin “on or about December 15, 2006, after the second of the Attorney General’s telephone conversations with Sen. Pryor”:
Therefore, despite assuring Pryor that he would “look for someone else,” Gonzales went ahead and appointed Griffin anyway. Additionally, four days after the meeting between Gonzales and Pryor, Sampson sent out an e-mail recommending that they “gum this [Griffin’s nomination] to death.” Sampson told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Gonzales did not object to this plan at the time.
Griffin continues to serve indefinitely as an “interim” U.S. attorney, even though the traditional 120-day term limit for interim prosecutors expired on April 20.
UPDATE: Emtywheel at The Next Hurrah points out that Gonzales signed Griffin’s appointment “on December 18 … but it was dated December 15,” the same day as his second conversation with Pryor.

Glass houses? O'Reilly derided "talk show nuts" who believe U.S. will "nuke Iran"
http://mediamatters.org/items/200705220004
On the May 18 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, while discussing May 17 Senate negotiations on a comprehensive immigration bill, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly asserted: "Now, the far right, the hard right, somehow believes that, in the United States of America, the federal government at some point is gonna form federal squads to go in and grab people where they live or where they work and throw them out of the country. These are the talk show nuts who are telling you that they're gonna nuke Tehran." In fact, as Media Matters for America has documented, O'Reilly is among those who have predicted that the United States will eventually bomb Iran. O'Reilly's statements include:
On the December 5, 2006, broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, O'Reilly asserted that "we may have to" "level cities like Tehran, kill hundreds of thousands of people,"
