Robert Weissman: The Story of Stuff
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/120907E.shtml
"The Story of Stuff with Annie Leonard" is an engaging new short film that explains the "materials economy" in 20 fun-filled minutes. Produced by Free Range Studios, which developed "The Meatrix" - an animated short about factory farming that ranks among the cleverest uses of Internet technologies to deliver a politically progressive message - The Story of Stuff features Annie Leonard, amusing graphics, lots of humor, and a complicated analysis presented in an easy-to-understand conversational tone.

Free-Energy Battery Inventor Killed at Airport?
http://pesn.com/2007/12/05/9500463_self-powered_battery_inventor_dead/
Official statement cites "natural causes" but others familiar with the disruptive potential of the inventor's technology to the existing power structure consider it a probable assassination.
by Sterling D. Allan, Pure Energy Systems News
On Nov. 11, inventor of a revolutionary, affordable, clean energy technology, Arie M. DeGeus of AMDG Scientific Corp was found slumped in his car, totally unresponsive, in the long-term parking lot of the Charlotte Douglass International Airport in North Carolina. He was taken to the hospital and died a short time later. The autopsy suggested heart failure, so officials were saying the death was a result of a medical problem or natural causes, and not likely to be a homicide. (Ref.; ref.)
Those who were involved with his research are doubtful, citing, among other things, that he had been in relatively good health. The timing is also suspicious. He was apparently on his way to Europe where he was to secure major funding for the development and commercialization of his technology, which could make oil obsolete as a fuel source.
Charlotte Macklenburg Police detective, M. Conner, said that it would be a while yet before the toxicology report comes in on this case.
Tom Bearden, a well-known figure in the cutting-edge, clean energy technology industry, wrote a lengthy report on the inventor, his death, and his technology. He said:
"DeGeus was the inventor of a thin wafer-like material/device that somehow specially aligned the atoms or electron currents ongoing in that material, so that the wafer produced a constant amperage at a small voltage – continuous real power, or in other words a strange kind of “self-powering battery”.

Hear Voices? It May Be an Ad
An A&E Billboard 'Whispers' a Spooky Message Audible Only in Your Head in Push to Promote Its New 'Paranormal' Program
New Yorker Alison Wilson was walking down Prince Street in SoHo last week when she heard a woman's voice right in her ear asking, "Who's there? Who's there?" She looked around to find no one in her immediate surroundings. Then the voice said, "It's not your imagination."
No, he's not crazy: Our intrepid reporter Andrew Hampp ventures to SoHo to hear for himself the technology that has New Yorkers 'freaked out' and A&E buzzing.
Indeed it isn't. It's an ad for "Paranormal State," a ghost-themed series premiering on A&E this week. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonic that transmits an "audio spotlight" from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium. The technology, ideal for museums and libraries or environments that require a quiet atmosphere for isolated audio slideshows, has rarely been used on such a scale before. For random passersby and residents who have to walk unwittingly through the area where the voice will penetrate their inner peace, it's another story.
Ms. Wilson, a New York-based stylist, said she expected the voice inside her head to be some type of creative project but could see how others might perceive it differently, particularly on a late-night stroll home. "I might be a little freaked out, and I wouldn't necessarily think it's coming from that billboard," she said.

A Majority of Military Families (3%) Hate Bush's War
Poll Questions Family Support of War
http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,157857,00.html?ESRC=navy.nl
Cincinnati Post | December 10, 2007
WASHINGTON -- Families with ties to the military, long a reliable source of support for wartime presidents, disapprove of President Bush and his handling of the war in Iraq, with a majority concluding the invasion was not worth it, a Los Angeles Times/ Bloomberg poll has found.
The views of the military community, which includes active-duty service members, veterans and their family members, mirror those of the overall adult population, a sign that the strong military endorsement that the administration often pointed to has dwindled in the war's fifth year.
Poll: Has the war been worth it?
Nearly six out of every 10 military families disapprove of Bush's job performance and the way he has run the war, rating him only slightly better than the general population does.
And among those families with Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, 60 percent say that the war in Iraq was not worth the cost, the same result as all adults surveyed.
"I don't see gains for the people of Iraq ... and, oh, my God, so many wonderful young people, and these are the ones who felt they were really doing something, that's why they signed up," said poll respondent Sue Datta, 61, whose youngest son, an Army staff sergeant, was seriously wounded in Iraq last year and is scheduled to redeploy in 2009. "I pray to God that they did not die in vain, but I don't think our president is even sensitive at all to what it's like to have a child serving over there."
Patience with the war, which has lasted longer than the U.S. involvement in World War II, is wearing thin -- particularly among families who have sent a service member to the conflict. One- quarter say American troops should stay "as long as it takes to win." Nearly seven in 10 favor a withdrawal within the coming year or "right away."
Military families are only slightly more patient: 35 percent are willing to stay until victory; 58 percent want them home within a year or sooner.
Here, too, the military families surveyed are in sync with the general population, 64 percent of whom call for a withdrawal by the end of next year.
"You generally expect to see support for the president as commander-in-chief and for the war, but this is a different kind of war than those we've fought in the past, particularly for families," said David Segal, a military sociologist at the University of Maryland.
Today's all-volunteer force is older and more married than any before it. Facing a shortage of troops, the Army increased the maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42 and called up reservists, who tend to be older and more settled than recruits out of high school. The result is a fighting force that left thousands of spouses and children behind.
At the same time, deployments have grown longer and more frequent as Soldiers rotate in and out of the war zone, sometimes three and four times, with no end date in sight, a wearing existence that has contributed to opposition to Bush and his war strategy.
"The man went into Iraq without justification, without a plan, he just decided to go in there and win and he had no idea what was going to happen," said poll respondent Mary Meneely, 58, of Arco, Minn. Her son, an Air Force reservist, served one tour in Afghanistan. "There have been terrible deaths on our side, and it's even worse for the Iraqi population. It's another Vietnam."
Night all

Conyers requests Justice Department info on Halliburton rape cover-up
Adam Doster
Published: Tuesday December 11, 2007
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. and Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) sent a letter today to the Justice Department calling for information on the status of a Department inquiry into the alleged rape of a 22-year-old Jamie Leigh Jones, a female Halliburton/KBR employee who, according to ABC News, was held captive two years ago in Baghdad and told that she would be fired if she left for medical care.
“We are writing to follow up on the letter sent yesterday by Representative Poe concerning the Department's response to American Jamie Leigh Jones' report that she was assaulted and raped by fellow employees of Halliburton/KBR in Baghdad,” the letter says, “and that in the aftermath of this assault she was imprisoned under armed guard for over 24 hours without food or water.”

From the "This is how rumors get started" department
Updated 12/10
I thought this one was worth passing along. It's a highly unsubstantiated rumor, so take it for what it's worth.
The rumor comes via R.S. Janes at BartBlog (a.k.a. Bartcop). It claims that MSNBC may have found that host they've been looking for. And it ain't Rosie O'Donnell. This rumor claims that MSNBC regular and Air America Radio host Rachel Maddow may get the nod. Here's more:
Finally, a note under the door says Air America Radio’s Rachel Maddow will be offered the hour following Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, but only with a ‘funny’ co-host, as it appears increasingly unlikely that The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart or Bill Maher and others will step in for the kind of unimpressive money and short-term contract that are on the table. Rumor is the cable channel’s execs are impressed with Maddow, but she’s not perceived as ‘funny’ enough by herself for the uptempo news/comedy format they’re seeking. Paul F. Tompkins and Joel McHale, that guy Keith has on who hosts E!s “The Soup,” have been mentioned as co-hosts, as well as Rachel’s AAR colleague Randi Rhodes, although Randi is seen by some as too partisan and combative. If this goes through, the prime-time weekday line up for MSNBC would then be “Hardball”; “Countdown with Keith Olbermann”; the as-yet-unnamed Rachel Maddow show, and “Live with Dan Abrams.” Expect a press release in January.
Again, this is just a rumor, and one that hasn't hit the big media gossip sites yet, so do with it what you wish.
UPDATE: TVNewser says a test pilot for a potential new show has been taped, featuring Maddow and MSNBC prime time VP Bill Wolff.

Nevertheless, there does appear to be an outrage here. Apparently -- and this is real news of the Whitehouse statement -- the President decided to secretly ignore Executive Order 12333, which, among other things, has long been the only real source (other than Fourth Amendment) of legal protection of the privacy rights of U.S. persons overseas vis-a-vis surveillance by the federal government. This is a gap in FISA that the 1978 Congress said it would get around to closing -- but it never did. And so the only thing standing between U.S. persons overseas and their own government snooping on them has been E.O. 12333.
If the President publicly rescinded 12333, there would be a huge outcry. It would prompt Congress to act immediately.
Which is presumably why he didn't do so

Bush nominates Limbaugh Jr. for federal courtSt. Louis Business Journal
Missouri Supreme Court Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr. was nominated by President Bush on Thursday to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Limbaugh Jr. has served on the Missouri Supreme Court since August 1992. His father, Stephen Limbaugh Sr., is a Senior U.S. District Judge in St. Louis.
Limbaugh Jr. has also served on the 32nd Judicial Circuit of Missouri, as a prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County and a partner in a private practice. He is the cousin of prominent radio commentator Rush Limbaugh.
Only the president has the authority to formally nominate candidates for federal posts, like judgeships, to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.

Tancredo, The Draft, And
Tancredo, The Draft, And Psychology
by: Erin Rosa
Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 10:27 AM MDT
A three-year-old Rocky Mountain News article sheds some light on questions regarding Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo and his draft status during the Vietnam War. It also talks about the Congressman's psychological profile, and his brief squabble with state Treasurer Mike Coffman.
According to the report, Coffman, a former marine and soldier, walked away from a pro-Iraq war rally because he had problems with Tancredo's draft history.
Erin Rosa :: Tancredo, The Draft, And Psychology
From the article* (see bellow):
State Treasurer Mike Coffman confirmed Wednesday he walked away from a pro-war rally with Congressman Tom Tancredo because of questions about Tancredo's failure to serve in Vietnam.
Coffman, a former Marine who saw action in the first Persian Gulf conflict more than a decade ago, left the Colorado Capitol stage in what he described as a personal protest...
"I just didn't feel (Tancredo) had the moral authority to send other young people off to war when he was not willing to go himself."
Then it came out that Tancredo was put to the bottom of the draft list because of previous episodes with depression and anxiety.
Last year, it was reported that in 1970, after Tancredo's student deferments ran out, he appealed his 1-A draft status, which would have put him at the top of the list for draft eligibility during the Vietnam War.
Tancredo said he didn't remember it that way. But he said he was given a 1-Y status, which put him at the bottom of the list, when he reported that he had been treated for mental illness as a teenager.
Tancredo said he was diagnosed with depression when he was 16 or 17 and received medication for five years for panic attacks and bouts of anxiety and depression.
Because of Tancredo's draft record, Coffman said he specifically asked organizers of the rally whether Tancredo would be speaking.
In a radio interview from last July, Tancredo was quoted saying "I did not serve. I could not serve, but I certainly wish that I had that opportunity."

HR 847
Bresnahan’s tongue-in-cheek Grinch-itude notwithstanding, the measure will state that the House of Representatives “recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world,” “expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide,” and among other things, “acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization.”
==========================
whats deceitful about this measure is the last sentence. recall how many twists and turns neocons go thru trying to claim that we were founded as a christian country. this is just like their embryo's have civil rights initiatives.
whats even more harmful about this is that its framed in a way that tars and feathers someone who would vote against it.
Why doesn't Pelosi just bury the thing ?

Agent's assertions revive torture debate
By Mark Silva and Jill Zuckman
Washington Bureau
9:35 PM CST, December 11, 2007
WASHINGTON—The assertion by a former CIA interrogator that the tactic known as waterboarding was effective in shaking potentially life-saving information from a leading terrorist has infused new passion into the debate over torture, both in the presidential campaign and in government.
Retired CIA agent John Kiriakou made the rounds of network and cable news programs Monday and Tuesday describing how waterboarding, an interrogation technique that makes a prisoner believe he is in imminent danger of drowning, had prompted Al Qaeda leader Abu Zubaydah to provide critical information after he had held out for weeks. Kiriakou's revelations come on the heels of the disclosure that the CIA destroyed videotapes of such interrogations.
The retired agent's comments have revived one of the toughest questions in the torture debate: What if using distasteful, even repugnant, tactics is the most effective way to get hardened terrorists to reveal information that could save American lives?

Rush and Bill
Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly dominate talk radio. Folks want to hear what they have to say and advertisers will pay big bucks to ride along.
It's that 3% thing again
Rush and Bill fish in the 97% sea. Lots of fish in that sea. AAR is fishing in the 3% pond. Not many fish at all, and what is there are mostly tiny.
So Green tries to be more like the 97%
Green gets rid of the non-producers. Radical talk only sells to the 3%. And most of the 3% is broke. Every time AAR moves to the right, they come closer to the money.
AAR needs me!
If AAR has a future, I AM that future. AAR must crack into the 97% or parish. Rush has lots of liberal listeners. It is because Rush is very entertaining. Ya gotta put on a show the people want to hear.
