Kucinich Says He's Preparing 50-Page Bush Articles of Impeachmen

Touching on issues ranging from Yucca Mountain to the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq, presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich spoke to a crowd of several hundred people in Reno Saturday.

Despite a steady snowfall outside, a standing-room-only crowd packed into two meeting rooms at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to hear what the Ohio Congressman and Democrat had to say about issues he's most closely associated with: the environment and opposition to the war and the Bush administration in general. Those expecting Kucinich to deliver harsh words about the president weren't disappointed, as the half-hour campaign speech soon turned to talk of impeachment.

"On the way over here, I was reading a 50-page document that relates to Articles of Impeachment for the President of the United States," Kucinich said to a standing ovation. "And I want you to know that I'm actually preparing this document for submission to the House."

Kucinich said under the current administration, citizen's rights to due process and fair trial are in jeopardy.

"This is a moment when we're called upon to reclaim our country," he said. "You give me your vote, I'll give you back your country."

Kucinich also discussed how his concern for the environment would shape his presidency if he were to be elected.

"Think about this. The government has an engine of sustainability so that the Department of Transportation focuses on developing mass transit solutions. The Department of Housing and Urban Development develops green housing with natural light and passive solar. The Department of Energy incentivizes the production of wind and solar and green energy," he told the crowd.

But most of those on hand weren't there to hear about global warming.

Bill Cantella of Reno made his way throughout the crowd, handing out Kucinich pamphlets and stickers simply reading "Impeach," while others wore shirts and held banners bearing the same sentiment.

Cantella said Kucinich's "everyman" appeal draws him to the candidate.

"The most appealing thing about him to me is that he's not connected with special interests, international corporations and he does not accept campaign contributions from corporations or PACs." Cantella said. "He's not connected to the military industrial complex, oil companies and health insurance companies that rule our lives."

He was quick, however, to point out that shunning such donations could, in fact, hurt Kucinich's chances in a race populated by high-profile candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on the Democratic side.

"That's probably his biggest problem," Cantella said. "Because you have to have a lot of money to win the presidency of the United States. "

Kucinich's wife, Elizabeth, who was raised in England, spoke about the perception that her husband traditionally has been seen as a fringe, extremist candidate.

Democrat Base Gives Kucinich Third Major Win In Nationwide Poll

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has won another major poll among grassroots Party activists most likely to vote in caucuses and primaries, capturing 41% of the vote from Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), which has more than 80,000 members across the nation.

In the field of eight candidates, the Ohio Congressman was the overwhelming winner, easily out-pacing second-place finisher former Senator John Edwards, who received 26% of the vote. Senator Barack Obama came in third with 13%, followed by Senator Hillary Clinton with 9%, and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson with 5%. The other Democratic candidates were in the low single digits. Kucinich was also the top vote-getter among PDA members in the early-voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

It is the third exceptionally strong finish by Kucinich in polls among active, grassroots Democrats. Last month, he topped all other candidates in 47 of 50 states in a poll sponsored by Democracy for America (DFA). Also, a poll conducted by the progressive The Nation magazine showed Kucinich with 35% of the vote, Obama second with 24% and Edwards third with 13%.

In last month’s DFA poll, Kucinich received almost 32% of the 150,000-plus votes cast, more than Edwards and Obama combined. There, too, he won both Iowa and New Hampshire.

In announcing today’s results, PDA said, “The Congressman's showing indicates that Progressive Democrats are still in sync with the Kucinich agenda: Out of Iraq; no attack on Iran, single-payer healthcare, fair trade, etc.” The poll was open only to PDA members, and the organization said it added “extra layers of security” to protect the integrity of the survey.

In an analysis of the recent polls in The Nation today, Washington correspondent John Nichols wrote that Kucinich’s “pointed opposition to the war in Iraq and outspoken advocacy of impeachment of Vice President Cheney has echoed the sentiments of the Democratic base” and “party activists who do the heavy lifting.”

Real Estate Along Nicaragua's Pacific Coast Booming!

Nicaragua real estate represents the best deal on Coastal and Colonial Property offered today in the Americas. The Southern Pacific region has experienced unprecedented growth over the last several years, and with the continued hype from both the Surf world, Speculators, Retirees, and publications like the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Miami Herald and Men’s health, this looks not likely to change anytime in the near future. Heralded as “the Next Costa Rica”, Nicaragua offers many the last chance to own an affordable piece of gorgeous beachfront real estate, just a short 2 hour flight from Miami.

Over the next 5 years 80 million Americans will retire. A recent article in Forbes found that some 10% of these individuals plan to retire overseas. The top 5 destinations for this some 8 million, to-be expatriates include Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Brazil, and NICARAGUA.

What does Nicaragua offer that these others do not you might ask? The answer– a cheaper cost of living, beachfront and colonial real estate at a fraction of the price, the second lowest crime rate in the western hemisphere (second only to Canada), and the best tax incentives for both retirees and business owners in all of Central America !

Nicaragua was recently ranked Top 5 Surfing in the World by Surf Magazine. With off-shore breezes over 320 days a year, perfect reef, river mouth, beach, and point breaks, and a fraction of the crowds of neighboring Costa Rica, the Popoyo region is quickly becoming the next “Surf Mecca”!

House Democrats Pull Budget

House Democrats Pull Budget Offer
The GOP Is Negotiating In Bad Faith, Obey Says

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 11, 2007; Page A03

A Democratic deal to give President Bush some war funding in exchange for additional domestic spending appeared to collapse last night after House Appropriations Committee Chairman David R. Obey (D-Wis.) accused Republicans of bargaining in bad faith.

Instead, Obey said he will push a huge spending bill that would hew to the president's spending limit by stripping it of all lawmakers' pet projects, as well as most of the Bush administration's top priorities. It would also contain no money for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"Absent a Republican willingness to sit down and work out a reasonable compromise, I think we ought to end the game and go to the president's numbers," Obey said. "I was willing to listen to the argument that we ought to at least add more for Afghanistan, but when the White House refuses to compromise, when the White House continues to stick it in our eye, I say to hell with it."

House Democratic leaders were scheduled to complete work last night on a $520 billion spending bill that included $11 billion in funding for domestic programs above the president's request, half of what Democrats had initially approved. The bill would have also contained $30 billion for the war in Afghanistan, upon which the Senate would have added billions more for Iraq before final congressional approval.

But a stern veto threat this weekend from White House budget director Jim Nussle put the deal in jeopardy, and Obey said he is prepared for a long standoff with the White House.

Small businesses in America

Small businesses in America losing optimism on economy

It's a bit tough to be optimistic when all you see are corporate handouts to the biggest businesses in America. The Democrats really need to step back and think about how they can assist small businesses instead of the never-ending gravy train to big business. Big business is not going to hire new employees and it has been that way for years. Small business is what will carry the US economy to the next level. It will be small business that will hire employees, pay taxes and not suck up corporate welfare.

Looking back over the last few years, everything has been about blocking competition and shoveling over handouts, hand over fist, to the biggest and whiniest companies in America. I expect to see such policies elsewhere, but in the US, this simply does not fit. Democrats ought to be reaching out to small business. There is so much that can be done here and this is where the future is. Allowing the same old big names to dominate didn't work out very well for the Soviet Union and I don't see if working out very well for the US either.

BP fails to move Beyond

BP fails to move Beyond Petroleum - "biggest environmental crime in history"
by Chris in Paris · 12/10/2007 04:43:00 PM ET

Not very shocking, really, though still revolting.
BP, the British oil giant that pledged to move "Beyond Petroleum" by finding cleaner ways to produce fossil fuels, is being accused of abandoning its "green sheen" by investing nearly £1.5bn [$3.05bn] to extract oil from the Canadian wilderness using methods which environmentalists say are part of the "biggest global warming crime" in history.

The multinational oil and gas producer, which last year made a profit of £11bn, is facing a head-on confrontation with the green lobby in the pristine forests of North America after Greenpeace pledged a direct action campaign against BP following its decision to reverse a long-standing policy and invest heavily in extracting so-called "oil sands" that lie beneath the Canadian province of Alberta and form the world's second-largest proven oil reserves after Saudi Arabia.

Producing crude oil from the tar sands – a heavy mixture of bitumen, water, sand and clay – found beneath more than 54,000 square miles of prime forest in northern Alberta – an area the size of England and Wales combined – generates up to four times more carbon dioxide, the principal global warming gas, than conventional drilling. The booming oil sands industry will produce 100 million tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to a fifth of the UK's entire annual emissions) a year by 2012, ensuring that Canada will miss its emission targets under the Kyoto treaty, according to environmentalist activists.

The Impeachment Trial of George W. Bush

"The Impeachment Trial of George W. Bush" will premiere on January 2. With the help of Constitutional scholar Bruce Fein, we've created a play that dramatizes what would happen if the House impeached Bush and the Senate tried him for high crimes and misdemeanors. I've been meeting with Congressmen here in Washington DC to give the play the necessary verisimilitude. Check back often for progress on the production.

Both Congressmen will be "prosecutors" in the stage play -- played by actors, of course as will all the characters, including Bush himself, who will deliver a chilling "you can't handle the truth" type speech, reminiscent of Jack Nicholson's in "A Few Good Men."

I can just imagine GW trying to give a “you can’t handle the truth” type speech and mangling the hell out of it like he usually does! That would be too funny!

If it opens in Washington I hope somebody buys a front row ticket for Bush and Cheney so they can get an idea of what the procedure is going to be like if Congress ever gets the spine to pull the trigger!

Dennis J. Kucinich

http://hot.com/

I want to inspire America to take a new path, a different direction.

I envision an America which has the capacity to reconnect with the heart of the world; an America which proceeds in the world optimistically and courageously. An America which understands that the world is interdependent, that it is inter-connected, and that what we do today impacts future generations.

I want to break the shackles of fear which have deprived our citizens of rights. We need to change the way this country values humanity, so that instead of fear and lies, we can live our lives based on principles of peace and hope. We need to regain the trust of the American people and we need to have a government which trusts the American people.

It's time for America to resume its glorious journey; time to reject shrinking jobs and wages, disappearing savings and rights; time to reject the detour towards fear and greed. It's time to look out upon the world for friends, not enemies; time to counter the control of corporations over our politics, our economy, our resources, and mass media.

It's time for those who have much to help those who have little, by maintaining a progressive tax structure. It's time to tell the world that we wish to be their partner in peace, not their leader in war. Most of all, it is time for America to again be the land where dreams come true, because the government is on the side of its people.

Snow gives trials talk at C of O

Former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow spoke in the College of the Ozarks Keeter Gymnasium Thursday evening to an enthusiastic crowd of students, instructors, and members of the public.

The title of Snow’s speech was ‘Battling Adversity, Beating The Odds, And Passing The Test.” Snow has battled cancer in years past, and he was successfully treated for a recurrence of the disease earlier this year.

“It’s just a real honor to be here,” Snow said as he greeted the crowd, “It’s always special to come to a college because it’s an opportunity to see young people, and get a measure not only of what’s going on in the country, but what’s going on in the hearts and minds of young men and women around the country.”

He thanked C of O President Dr. Jerry Davis and the staff and students of C of O for their hospitality during his visit. Snow commented on the beauty of the campus, and he said he was especially impressed with the architecture and craftsmanship of the student-built Williams Memorial Chapel, describing it as “magnificent.”

A central theme of his speech focused on the role of faith in dealing with adversities in life, and how he relied upon his faith while undergoing his treatment for cancer.

Earlier in the evening Snow held a press conference with the local media, and he was very gracious in answering questions. When asked by the Branson Daily News what he has been doing with his time since leaving the White House in August of this year, Snow provided a quick response.

“I’ve been living a life of activity. I’ve been giving a lot of speeches. The speeches are keeping me quite busy. I’ve been doing about two a week.

“I’m going to give about 100 speeches next year.”

Giving a hint of what new projects he is currently developing, he added, “I’m going to work on a couple of books. Books are near and dear to me. I’ve talked to Steve Case of AOL, I’m working with them. I will be doing some broadcast media. I’m not sure how much.”

Snow appeared to be relaxed and comfortable during his speech, and he frequently used humor to illustrate a point. The audience was attentive and responsive, and broke out with spontaneous applause several times during the program.

At the conclusion of his speech, Snow addressed the students of C of O directly.

TWO STORIES....After the

TWO STORIES....After the United States captured al-Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah in the weeks after 9/11, the CIA tortured him in an effort to get him to talk. Here's how Ron Suskind described what happened, starting with what CIA investigators found in Zubaydah's diary:

"The guy is insane, certifiable, split personality," [Dan] Coleman told a top official at FBI after a few days reviewing the Zubaydah haul....There was almost nothing "operational" in his portfolio. That was handled by the management team. He wasn't one of them...."He was like a travel agent, the guy who booked your flights....He was expendable, you know, the greeter....Joe Louis in the lobby of Caesar's Palace, shaking hands."

....According to CIA sources, he was water-boarded....He was beaten....He was repeatedly threatened....His medication was withheld. He was bombarded with deafening, continuous noise and harsh lights.

....Under this duress, Zubaydah told them that shopping malls were targeted by al Qaeda....Zubaydah said banks — yes, banks — were a priority....And also supermarkets — al Qaeda was planning to blow up crowded supermarkets, several at one time. People would stop shopping. The nation's economy would be crippled. And the water system — a target, too. Nuclear plants, naturally. And apartment buildings.

Thousands of uniformed men and women raced in a panic to each flavor of target. Of course, if you multiplied by ten, there still wouldn't be enough public servants in America to surround and secure the supermarkets. Or the banks. But they tried.

Sometime later, Zubaydah finally provided some actionable intelligence: the name of Jose Padilla and the news that "Mukhtar," a code name that had popped up multiple times on NSA sigint, was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. But that information didn't come because Zubaydah had been tortured. It came only after a CIA interrogator slipped under Zubaydah's skin by convincing him, with the help of some ideas from the Koran, that Zubaydah was predestined to cooperate with them

That's Suskind's account. Over at ABC News, though, Brian Ross has an interview with a former CIA officer named John Kiriakou, who says just the opposite about Zubaydah: "He was highly thought of in al Qaeda, and he was very, very good at logistics....We knew that he was really one of the intellectual leaders of the group." And he was waterboarded:

Ross: What happened as a result of that?

Kiriakou: It did. The threat information that he provided disrupted a number of attacks, maybe dozens of attacks.

Same guy. CIA sources for both accounts. But diametrically opposite conclusions. So who's right?

I don't know. But even if waterboarding worked Kiriakou has since decided that it was wrong. Why? "Because we're Americans, and we're better than that."

The full ABC story is here.

So true, you had to post it TWICE!!!

Kevin Drum agrees with Marc....

DON'T KNOW NOTHIN'....On NPR this weekend, White House press secretary Dana Perino recounted a recent press briefing in which a reporter referred to the Cuban Missile Crisis:

"I was panicked a bit because I really don't know about . . . the Cuban Missile Crisis," said Perino, who at 35 was born about a decade after the 1962 U.S.-Soviet nuclear showdown. "It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I'm pretty sure."

So she consulted her best source. "I came home and I asked my husband," she recalled. "I said, 'Wasn't that like the Bay of Pigs thing?' And he said, 'Oh, Dana.' "

Italics mine. I thought it was only the kids who didn't know any history these days?

NB: JFK, of course, is famous for resisting military advice during the Cuban Missile Crisis from insane hawks like Curtis LeMay. Not knowing anything about this probably helps Perino fit right in to the Bush White House.

Somali pirates threaten to kill tanker crew

A tense standoff has developed off the Somali coast between US warships and pirates who have hijacked a tanker packed with explosive chemicals.

Under seige from the US navy, the pirates have now threatened to kill all 22 crew members of the Japanese Golden Nori unless a $1 million ransom is paid.

The tanker, carrying up to 40,000 tons of inflammable benzene, was captured as it was sailing from Singapore to Israel.

Two US Navy ships picked up the ship's distress calls and fired on the pirates' speedboats, sinking two.

The warships followed the kidnapped tanker into Somali coastal waters and trapped it close to the Somali port of Bossaso, preventing supplies from getting to the ship.

However they are afraid to launch an assault on the ship for fear of detonating its cargo.

Office-Building Workers Threaten to Strike on New Year’s Day

With the city’s office-building market booming year after year, the janitors, doormen and elevator operators who keep those buildings running want their share.

The union representing 26,000 workers at 1,000 New York City office buildings says these workers may strike on New Year’s Day if the sizable wage increases they want in a new contract are denied.

Negotiations between the two sides have grown more tense, with the union saying that building owners can easily afford to pay significant raises because rents are soaring, while industry officials say it would be foolhardy to grant large raises when the country’s economy seems so shaky.

The union, Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, has inserted a big question mark into the bargaining by announcing that it will not tell management negotiators how large a raise it wants until Dec. 27, five days before the contract deadline.

“Clearly, money is the issue,” said Mike Fishman, the union’s president. “We believe the industry is in good shape and has had an incredible three years, while working people are being squeezed out of New York. We need to make sure that our people earn enough money to make it possible to live in the city.”

Union officials repeatedly cite one fact: Average asking rents for office space in New York have soared 47 percent a square foot over the past three years.

Don't threaten Seattle's homeless, or else

SEATTLE -- It's now against the law to threaten a homeless person in Seattle with physical harm.

The city council added the homeless to the malicious harassment law that also deals with gender identity, marital status, political ideology, age or parental status.

City Council President Nick Licata who sponsored the change says Seattle wants to be a "city of love, not of hate."

The ordinance approved Monday also makes it a crime to damage the belongings of homeless people.

dan blah dan!

HEY FELLA!

missed ya b4.

The 'touch' u speak of is just a form of rage...

Great one today

The sound was great - I had to reload once to get it in synch. Other than that, technically, it was really good. Still don't know what kind of oatmeal Marc was making, though. Steel Cut, maybe? Was taking forever.

I don't think the show's devolving.

Looking forward to the two of them taking over Randi's show next week.

I'm 45 and I know very little about the Cuban Missile Crisis. I know Russia stationed nukes in Cuba and pointed them at the US. That's all I know. I couldn't explain the Bay of Pigs to save my life. Maybe i can be Press Secretary some day?

Sex, Sex and More Sex in Israeli Government

A brief venture into the erotic or psychotic world of ‘Israeli state eroticism’.

Without starting a philosophical discussion about dualism in the Middle East and going to the extremes, one must admit that the Israeli government is the most horny and sexually most active government on Earth. If you jostle the cabinet a bit, what will fall out will be a whole bunch of sexual aids accompanied by spicy reports of erotic outburst, innocent adultery and divulging, only to have everything end up in much more serious accusations of rape or articles about orgies with established BDSM rules.

The brief venture into the erotic or perhaps psychotic world of “Israeli state eroticism” is best commenced at the top of the pyramid, with a recollection of the media bang caused last year by the now former president who quit after accusations that he had sexually molested and/or raped at least ten women. Mosche got his forceful relief over a period of some ten years. In the end the case ended with a deal possible only in modern democracies where the elite is forgiven against the will of the people and against the law and against morals and against common sense, not withstanding whether we are speaking about the mass murderers of their own citizens or the serial rapists of “Katsav” women. Anyhow, Mosche is today in some summerhouse treating his inflamed prostate, while the fact that seventy percent of the Israeli public had openly displayed their indignation over his shameful deal with the prosecution has long been forgotten.

Interesting...Edwards does the best against repubs

Poll: Huckabee Would Lose to Dems By Double Digits
By Jeralyn, Section Elections 2008
Posted on Tue Dec 11, 2007 at 11:11:40 AM EST

Bring on Huckabee? A new CNN Poll shows he would lose by double digits in a general election.

In head-to-head matchups -- the first to include Huckabee -- the former Arkansas governor loses to Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York by 10 percentage points (54 percent to 44 percent), to Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois by 15 points (55 percent to 40 percent) and to former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina by 25 points (60 percent to 35 percent).

Edwards does the best against all Republicans.

On the Democratic side, Edwards performs best against each of the leading Republicans. In addition to beating Huckabee by 25 percent and McCain by 8 percent, the North Carolina Democrat beats Romney by 22 percentage points (59 percent to 37 percent).

Edwards polled the best in 2004, too

against Republicans. Lots of Republicans like this guy. Not all Republicans are evil. They're just lacking truly compassionate leadership.

Holy Smoke! Police Find Cannabis in Greek Nunnery

`The nuns did not know what they (cannabis plants) were and assumed they were large decorative plants,` a police official said.

A Greek Orthodox nunnery was turned into a marijuana plantation by two men posing as gardeners for elderly nuns, police said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, officers raided the nunnery in the village of Filiro, near the northern port city of Thessaloniki, and found more than 30 large cannabis plants in the enclosed garden.

"Two unknown men had told the two elderly nuns in the nunnery they would like to help them with the garden and then proceeded to plant the cannabis," a police official told Reuters.

"The nuns did not know what they were and assumed they were large decorative plants," he said.

Police did not arrest the nuns and have launched a hunt for the culprits.

White House Dana's Day of Digs crisis

Step aside CJ Cregg, there's a new blonde dropping bombshells in the White House - but just don't ask her about history.

Washington is abuzz after White House press secretary Dana Perino - who took over the job in September - laughingly retold a story about herself on an American radio station quiz show.

It turned out to be a blooper that West Wing's CJ Cregg would probably have neatly avoided.

According to the 35-year-old communications graduate, during her tenure as acting White House press secretary, a reporter referred to the Cuban Missile Crisis ... and she had no idea what it was.

"I was panicked a bit because I really don't know about . . . the Cuban Missile Crisis," she admitted. "It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I'm pretty sure."

So, according to the Washington Post, she consulted her best source.

"I came home and I asked my husband," she recalled. "I said, 'wasn't that like the Bay of Pigs thing?' And he said, 'oh, Dana'."

Summing it up

US didn't like Castro. Wanted to overthrow him. Decided they'd back some anti-Castro Cubans and felt that, since they were being repressed by Castro, all Cubans would rise up and help overthrow him.

Cuba got wind of the plan and struck back - resulting in thousands of deaths. Bay of Pigs.

A year or so later, Cuba alligned itself more formally with the Soviet Union, declaring itself a Socialist state, likely to protect themselves from future attempted coups by the US government. In return, Soviets were able to put nukes in Cuba pointing at Florida and beyond.

How am I doing so far? I was two. And Marc's right, nobody really talks about this stuff. I haven't been interested in any of the movies that were based on these events. I remember duck and cover drills from when I was a kid and the sirens going off daily, like drills, so we were prepared in case we were attacked. Prepared? I'm under my desk. How am I prepared? lol.

Duck and cover drills came along LONG before the Bay of Pigs. Duck and cover drills were

an offshoot of us having used nuclear weapons against the Japanese. They were

manifestations of guilt.

Red,

When I was in the midst of a major depressive episode, I was asked if I wanted to kill myself.

I said, "No...but I have thought about murder a few times."

The counselor didn't find that odd at all. Isn't that odd?
