C.I.A. Admits It Destroyed Tapes of Harsh Interrogations
WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 — The Central Intelligence Agency in 2005 destroyed at least two videotapes documenting the interrogation of two Al Qaeda operatives in the agency’s custody, a step it took in the midst of congressional and legal scrutiny about the C.I.A’s secret detention program, according to current and former government officials.
The videotapes showed agency operatives in 2002 subjecting terror suspects — including Abu Zubaydah, the first detainee in C.I.A. custody — to severe interrogation techniques. They were destroyed in part because officers were concerned that tapes documenting controversial interrogation methods could expose agency officials to greater risk of legal jeopardy, several officials said.
The C.I.A. said today that the decision to destroy the tapes had been made “within the C.I.A. itself” and were destroyed to protect the safety of undercover officers and because they no longer had intelligence value. The agency was headed at the time by Porter J. Goss. Through a spokeswoman, Mr. Goss refused to comment this afternoon on the destruction of the tapes.
The existence and subsequent destruction of the tapes is likely to reignite the debate over the use of severe interrogation techniques on terror suspects, and raises questions about whether C.I.A. officials withheld information from the courts and from the presidentially-appointed Sept. 11 commission about aspects of the program.....

STUDENT: Recent polls show you surging… What do you attribute this surge to?
HUCKABEE: There’s only one explanation for it, and it’s not a human one. It’s the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of five thousand people. (Applause) That’s the only way that our campaign can be doing what it’s doing. And I’m not being facetious nor am I trying to be trite. There literally are thousands of people across this country who are praying that a little will become much, and it has. And it defies all explanation, it has confounded the pundits. And I’m enjoying every minute of them trying to figure it out, and until they look at it, from a, just experience beyond human, they’ll never figure it out. And it’s probably just as well. That’s honestly why it’s happening.

Sorry, I was staring at someone's ass.
How to create a survey question.
State an opinion that will draw them to participate in your survey. Pick something relevant, recently newsworthy, something that matters to people. As they say in lawschool, there are 2 things that matter the most: recency and primacy.
Example: We should have gone to war with Iran.
Then, for your answer give 7 possible responses:
strongly agree
mostly agree
somewhat agree
somewhat disagree
mostly disagree
strongly disagree

The Aix Group and the Palestinians
A Generous Offer?
By NETA GOLAN
Anyone familiar with Israeli politics was not surprised that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert did not acknowledge Israel's occupation in his speech at Annapolis. What was surprising was that short of mentioning the "R" word- refugees, Olmert acknowledged the Palestinian refugee problem.
Referring to the Palestinians, the Israeli Prime Minister stated in his Annapolis speech: "your people, too, have suffered for many years; and there are some who still suffer. Many Palestinians have been living for decades in camps, disconnected from the environment in which they grew up, wallowing in poverty, in neglect, alienation, bitterness, and a deep, unrelenting sense of humiliation." Olmert's characterization of the refugees is only partially correct. Poverty, neglect, alienation, bitterness and feelings of humiliation, are only one component of the refugee experience. There are also other components, such as community, pride, generosity, and perseverance. This one-dimensional characterization obviously suits Olmert's conception of a solution. It also casts refugees as objects that will be acted upon (once again), rather than subjects who can genuinely participate in finding a solution. A recent article in the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz Daily titled "Refugees and Jerusalem : A question of money" sheds light on Olmert's statements. The article revealed the outlines of the deal being cooked to sell the rights of the Palestinian refugees.
In addition to oral testimonies given both by Palestinian refugees and Jewish combatants, many official documents describe policies and actions taken by Jewish militias which were designed to expel Palestinians from what has become the state Israel. According to Israeli Historian Benny Morris "In the months of April-May 1948, units of the Haganah [the pre-state defense force that was to become the IDF] were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them and destroy the villages themselves." Yet Olmert presented the refugee issue as a humanitarian problem, not unlike one caused by a natural disaster, saying that " Israel will be part of an international mechanism that will assist in finding a solution to this problem." Olmert made it clear that he was not admitting Israel's responsibility for creating the problem by saying "I came here today not in order to settle historical accounts between us...", and by equating the Palestinian refugee problem with the "constant suffering of many Israelis."...
Palestinian Refugees...Generous Offer?
The solution Olmert suggests is "an international effort, in which we (Israel) will participate, to assist these Palestinians in finding a proper framework for their future, in the Palestinian state that will be established in the territories agreed upon between us."
The suggestion that the refugees do not have the choice to return to the lands from which they were expelled, but instead "return" to a future Palestinian state, is contrary to international humanitarian law, and to UN resolution 194 that "Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date." Despite this, the United States President George Bush promised Ariel Sharon in a letter on the 14th of April 2004 "an agreed, just, fair and realistic framework for a solution to the Palestinian refugee issue as part of any final status agreement will need to be found through the establishment of a Palestinian state, and the settling of Palestinian refugees there, rather than in Israel." Despite the illegality of these promises, they were ratified on June 23, 2004 by both the United States House and Senate. Olmert refers to this letter in his statement as a point of departure for the negotiations...

What I think...
Not that I can really add to anything in the body politic, but I'm to the conclusion that what we have here in the USA is a crude form of devil worship mixed with the Jesus Banking System, Inc. Like, man, I dig Jesus but I can't afford Him, so I'll just live with the torture. I mean, do you use Vaseline or not? And do you heat it up first, or is it icy cold? Do I have any choice?
Is this the Outcome?

For Historical Palestine
Time to Choose:
Two States or One?
By JOHN V. WHITBECK
Almost immediately after the hollow show in Annapolis, a ray of hope has appeared from an unexpected source -- Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert.
In an interview published on November 29 in the Israeli daily Ha'aretz, he declared, "If the day comes when the two-state solution collapses, and we face a South African-style struggle for equal voting rights (also for the Palestinians in the territories), then, as soon as that happens, the State of Israel is finished."
This Ha'aretz article helpfully referred readers to a prior Ha'aretz article, published on March 13, 2003, in which Olmert had expressed the same concern in the following terms: "More and more Palestinians are uninterested in a negotiated, two-state solution, because they want to change the essence of the conflict from an Algerian paradigm to a South African one. From a struggle against 'occupation', in their parlance, to a struggle for one-man-one-vote. That is, of course, a much cleaner struggle, a much more popular struggle -- and ultimately a much more powerful one. For us, it would mean the end of the Jewish state."
Briefly, the Palestinian leadership appeared to have noticed Mr. Olmert's nightmare. On January 8, 2004, Ahmed Qurei (then the Palestinian prime minister and, more recently, the chief Palestinian negotiator in the run-up to Annapolis) declared that the wall being built through the West Bank represented an "apartheid solution" which would "put Palestinians like chickens in cages" and "kill the two-state solution" and concluded: "We will go for a one-state solution. There is no other solution." Three days later, he reaffirmed this position as he stood before the wall.
Unfortunately for the Palestinians and for the causes of justice and peace, there was no Palestinian follow-up. Now, almost four years later, Mr. Olmert has flung open the window of opportunity so wide and so publicly that it is barely conceivable that any Palestinian leadership could fail to notice and jump through it...

Lesson 2:
A priest offered a Nun a lift.
She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg.
The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand
up her leg.
The nun said, "Father, remember Psalm 129?"
The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, "Father, remember Psalm 129?"
The priest apologized "Sorry sister but the flesh is weak."
Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.
On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, "Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory."

I have been waiting for him to say that ... he has been going around the edges on it lately.

interesting. on first blush i would think it would marginalize him real fast, but when you consider his competition maybe not.
---arrogance of the fundamentalist mind---
I see it a little differently. I see it as the arrogance of the "believers"
mind. In some people's opinion, religion...belief in a god and a devil and
angels, etc. is nothing more than pure hooey...perhaps even a form of mental
illness. For example...if you happen to be a non believer, you are forced to

Interesting
Vakifli Koyu is the last Christian Armenian village in Turkey. After WWI it became a part of Syria, and many of the surrounding villages on Musa Dagh (Musa Ler) mountain were also Armenian. In 1939 this territory was transferred to Turkey, a move which Syria does not recognize, and all of the other Armenian villages chose to leave, rather than live in Turkey. Along with Anjar in Lebanon, Kessab in Syria, and some Hemshin villages these are some of the last Western Armenian speaking villages in the world.
A Vakifli Development Society has been started in an attempt to try and reverse the decline in the villages fortune’s. Young people move away, and the Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul cannot find a priest.

On the Young Turks
I am about to show these plotters that the Republic of Turkey cannot be overthrown by murderers or through their murderous designs...
These left-overs from the former Young Turk Party, who should have been made to account for the lives of millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse, from their homes and massacred, have been restive under the republican rule. They have hitherto lived on plunder, robbery and bribery and become inimical to any idea, or suggestion to enlist in useful labor and earn their living by the honest sweat of their brow.
Under the cloak of the opposition party, this element, who forced our country into the Great War against the will of the people, who caused the shedding of rivers of blood of the Turkish youth to satisfy the criminal ambition of Enver Pasha, has, in a cowardly fashion, intrigued against my life, as well as the lives of the members of my cabinet.
I would have more respect for them had they planned an armed revolution, taking the field in a manly fashion, to overthrow my government. But being conscious of the fact that they could not muster out even one regiment to give battle to the zealous adherents to, and upholders of, the glorious republic, they have resorted to bestial methods of assassination. They have hired murderers and even debauched women to commit their murderous acts.

Liberation Theology
INTRODUCTION
In the late 60s a new social and intellectual movement appeared on the Latin American continent. The movement is rooted in the Christian faith and Scriptures and seeks its ideological superstructure based on the religious reflection in close association with the Church organization(1). It is typical not only for Latin America but for the entire Third World and any social situation of oppression.
Members of the religious orders are committed to the vow of poverty and do not own property individually, nevertheless they enjoy a standard of living and security that separates them from the daily agony of the poor. The question then arose for some of them what is the ideal of poverty in a situation where most are suffering dehumanizing poverty, and what should the Church and Christians do about it?
Liberation theology thus emerged as a result of a systematic, disciplined reflection on Christian faith and its implications. The theologians who formulated liberation theology usually do not teach in universities and seminaries, they are a small group of Catholic or Protestant clergy and have direct contact with the grass-roots groups as advisors to priests, sisters or pastors. Since they spend at least some time working directly with the poor themselves, the questions they deal with arise out of their direct contact with the poor. Liberation theology interprets the Bible and the key Christian doctrines through the experiences of the poor. It also helps the poor to interpret their own faith in a new way. It deals with Jesus's life and message. The poor learn to read the Scripture in a way that affirms their dignity and self worth and their right to struggle together for a more decent life. The poverty of people is largely a product of the way society is organized therefore liberation theology is a "critique of economic structures". Phillip Berryman described the liberation theology in the following terms:
"Liberation theology is:
1. An interpretation of Christian faith out of the suffering, struggle, and hope of the poor;
2. A critique of society and the ideologies sustaining it;
3. A critique of the activity of the church and of Christians from the angle of the poor".

Congress 'guilty of not impeaching Bush'
By Press TV
Political analysts say that the NIE report on Iran should prompt Congress to start impeachment process against the Bush administration.
"With the recent NIE report on Iran, it is ever clearer that the administration's deceptions have only grown in scope. If after this Congress still does not take up the call for impeachment, it is itself open to charges of collusion in high crimes against the Republic," said Niranjan Ramakrishnan, a political analyst.
Ramakrishnan criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for pledging 'to keep impeachment off the table' in an October interview, describing the pledge as 'ridiculous' and 'criminal'.
"To leave unchallenged the deliberate misleading of the country to war, (and the effort to do the same a second time), makes her party a knowing accessory to the same misdeeds," he said.
He stressed that Congress has an equal duty to protect the Constitution as the President and called on Democrats to 'seize the cry of impeachment'.
"To paraphrase Lincoln's famous letter to General McClellan, it is time to tell Nancy Pelosi, if you won't impeach Bush and Cheney, can we at least impeach you?" he concluded.

Psst. Don't tell anyone, but ...
You know, just betwixt you, me 'n Sam's mustache, word is out that POT 97 isn't *actually* a part of the 97% anymores.
What horrible fate shall befall him, Mitt Romney's Vitalis only knows, but I'ma guessin' he's now, by default, a part of the pathetic 3%.
Any ideer why he's been excommunicated?
Sad to say, no matter how high-minded his intentions, it's b/c POT 97 had so little faith in his 97%-edness that he just couldn't keep from hangin' out on 3% blogs.
If that ain't a damning indictment, I dunno what is.
Can you blame the vaunted 97% for kicking his 3% ass to the curb?
Actions have consequences, motherfucker!
Peru, Yes; Colombia? Free Trade Agreements
Lessons from Latin America’s Recent Past
* Peru’s Free Trade victory in U.S. Senate could later embarrass both Senators Clinton and Obama for their pro Peru stance, but also could spotlight President Garcia’s complicity in massive human rights violations when the Shining Path Guerrillas were active.
* Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) between the U.S. and Latin America may turn out to be not as beneficial as they promised.
* Intra-regional trade could be a viable alternative to FTAs with Washington.

Watchdog says CIA mishandling declassification duties, wasting resources.
Nick Juliano
Published: Thursday December 6, 2007
The CIA is wasting resources devoted to declassifying decades-old intelligence documents by reviewing the same documents several times and trying to re-classify information that has already been released to the public, an open-government watchdog charges.
"I believe that CIA has been improperly withholding declassified information as if it were classified," Steven Aftergood, who heads the Federation of American Scientists' Project on Government Secrecy, wrote Thursday in a letter to the director of the CIA's Information Security Oversight Office.

Just a friendly reminder for all the Christian bashing. There's a growing majority of us who don't fit into your box. We go to church on Sunday, sing in the choir, teach Sunday School, and when we're done we drink our margaritas, our whiskey and our vodka. We love our Wiccan Druid friends, our free thinker friends, our Marxist friends, our anarchist friends, and our crazy sex-story friends...we glean traits from them that we believe enrich our lives and make us better people. We are for abortion and stem cell research and education and the poor and yes, cats, and WWE and anything that's playing on ESPN. We hate Republicans, and we don't really like the Democrats either though because they're a bunch of fucking pushovers and yes, we say fucking.
We don't give a rat's ass if the president we vote for has seen aliens or is pro-life. We just want him or her to give a shit about us. Which is why it's time for a 3rd party. Or maybe even a 3rd and a 4th, because right now, we are unrepresented and unheard. We are the Christian lower-used-to-be-middle class. We're not loud, but we're damn proud...
So go ahead and keep building that Christian bashing square box. My triangular ass just won't fit.
Right On, Annette!

saving...
Did you say dunkard? Was that a name, an action, or a religion?
We all look for salvation in one form or another. Some look for it in the bottom of a bottle of Absolut. Others look for it in Tarot. Still others look for it in music; or lyrics; or sex; in the words of spirits given to certain people. I choose to believe in the salvation afforded me by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary. He spoke to me audibly once, on the same day that I became pregnant with child after trying without luck for over a year. He saved me that day, from a painfully quiet house. The end result is a hellion child that only I know how to communicate effectively with, but to me she is worth a million 401ks.
We all make choices and none should be blamed or questioned for them. They are what they are.

Dunkard is a religion I think.
There are not many of them. I had always thought they were Quakers....shows how much I know...
Anyhow..at the funeral I got the impression that they felt that they know something that others may not..and that they felt like they should help those people know. (I'm THE WORST paraphraser! Sorry!)

Hefty salaries not enough for many U.S. Congressmen
Pockets Full of Perks
CONGRESSMEN WHO LIVE FRUGALLY are an endangered species. There is always plenty of money for traveling the world in high style while living a life of luxury and their pockets bulge.
The $165,200 salary is just the beginning. Only Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) returns an unused portion of his expense money to the federal treasury.
Perks range from the glamorous to the mundane. They have free parking at Washington Reagan National Airport—just steps from their favorite terminal. The average Joe takes the subway or a cab to the airport.
Parking even at the far-off spaces served by shuttle buses costs more than a cab unless you take a cab for many miles to fly out of Washington. Average Joe has to reserve just one flight and be there two hours in advance and may still be bumped because airlines overbook. Your congressman can book three flights and take the one that best suits his convenience.
He doesn’t have to bother canceling the other two reservations, although he has a highly paid staff to handle such petty details for him. If he arrives seconds before take-off, average Joe gets bumped and the congressman gets seated.
Congress gives itself the finest medical care, financed by taxpayers. When the congressman has a bellyache (instead of giving one to taxpayers) he goes to Walter Reed for the finest care available. He enjoys huge retirement benefits in addition to Social Security—if he hangs around long enough, he can get a $200,000 pension.

I try to avoid writing God and (fill in the blank) dialogues. My belief is that there is no God and, if there is, God ain't gonna be chatting up Jerry Falwell and me. My God and (fill in the blank) dialogues are humorous satires intended to convey the absurdity of the notion that God has each of us on Speed Dial.
The personification...the anthropomorphizing of God is more than half of the problem with modern deism. If there is a God, God is not your pal. God doesn't have pals. God doesn't need pals. God doesn't want pals. God doesn't need or want anything. God is not your cute and cuddly puppy wanting, above all else, to be loved and protected.
God isn't looking for protection. God doesn't want to have you rub God's tummy. God isn't needy.
But I don't believe in God, so I don't concern myself with the human hubris that propels humans to believe that they know what they cannot know...and that what they think that they know is just like them, only bigger.
The Human Job, if there is one, is for each of us to reduce our assholedness from one day to the next. The instant that we begin to hang religious bunting on our denominational tables, we have diverted our energies to something else.
Where did this whole god thing come from anyway?

Annette: "...But yet, you *are* capable of faith. You just don't know it. When you put that 41 cent stamp on your envelope, you have faith that it will make it from your mailbox across the nation to wherever..."
---------
Sure, I'm capable of faith. I was reared as a Catholic. It was faith learned through training, but faith nonetheless.
I don't agree with your analogy but it's not important enough to argue over. I have an expectation that the sun will rise each morning, but it ain't faith anymore than expecting the letter to arrive is. Both are based on past experiences having tangible results.
I had to teach myself how to not have faith in the existence of the supernatural. There was a fear instilled in me from a very young age. My thoughts could be read by an invisible god who could be just as displeased with bad thoughts as by bad deeds. One of those bad thoughts was to question his existence...or his righteousness. Mere contemplation of the possibilities could be a sin.
That type of deep-seated training is difficult to shake. Eventually my ability to reason won out, though I wouldn't be surprised if the old fear could be uncovered during hypnosis or talk therapy.
I am much happier (and no less aware of the advantages of goodness and the disadvantages of badness) as a rational thinker.
So, I repeat: Both you and I reject a buttload of supernatural gods and superstitious beliefs that are held by others. You are 99.99% atheistic, so your rational conclusion is very nearly the same as mine.
Have any of you ever owned a business?

Calls for educated, unified front of American citizens against federal income tax, IRS

Cryer, who challenged the government for years on the legality of filing federal income taxes, was acquitted on charges he failed to file returns. In July, a federal jury unanimously found Cryer not guilty on two misdemeanor counts of failure to file. And the prosecution dismissed two felony charges of tax evasion prior to trial, as The Shreveport Times reported in a local story that evidently did not “go national.”
“The court could not find a law that makes me liable or makes my revenues taxable,” Cryer told the Times. “The Supreme Court has ruled that the government cannot impose an income tax on anything but profits and gains. When you work for someone, you give your service and labor in exchange for money, so everything you make is not profit or gain. You put something into it.”
...
One of her two daughters said "I will kill it."
I'd make sure she was aware of the consequences of her actions. That if she were serious, then she was a murderer already, and I knew what to do with murderers. If she didn't immediately say "I was just kidding", then a field trip to the local state penetentiary would immediately be placed in the daily planner so she could get a good look at her future home.

Hi CeeCee
that or a similar documentary was on pbs within the last year or so I think...interesting stuff...The other daughter of my friend said she couldn't wait to babysit the new baby...
Clarification
The 99.99% refers to all of the non-beliefs that Annette and I share. We don't believe in monkey-gods. We don't believe that the sun is a chariot racing across the sky. We don't believe that our bodies will be ferried across the river Styx. We don't believe in making animal sacrifices so the smoke will please the gods.
If I keep listing all of the stuff we don't believe because they are preposterous and fantastical and superstitious notions, both of our lists will be huge and 99.99% identical.
The only difference between Annette's list and my list is a tiny asterisk at the bottom of Annette's list that indicates the one item she believes that I don't.
People of faith are aghast that an atheist can reject belief, but the same people reject most of the beliefs on the planet.

Jesus Hearts Darwin?
Former Evangelical Minister Has a New Message: Jesus Hearts Darwin
By Brandon Keim
The Rev. Michael Dowd is preaching a surprising message: Evolution is real and science points to the existence of God.
For the last five years, the author and former evangelical pastor has lived out of a van with his wife, crisscrossing the nation to deliver the good news.
His latest book, Thank God for Evolution, drew endorsements from five Nobel laureates and dozens of religious leaders. With the battle between science and religion at a fever pitch, it couldn't come at a better time. Just last week Texas papers reported that a curriculum director had been fired in October for forwarding information about an evolution lecture to friends and colleagues.
Dowd wasn't always an evolution proselytizer. Presented with an evolution textbook on his first day of biology classes at Evangel University, he stormed out and told his roommate that Satan had a foothold in the Christian school. But after encountering the teachings of Catholic eco-theologian Thomas Berry, Dowd embraced what's known as evolutionary theology.
Wired News spoke with Dowd by phone about science, religion and his belief that "a holy understanding of evolution will usher the world's religions into their greatness in the 21st century."
Wired News: Last week we learned that a Texas science education official, purportedly fired in October for insubordination, was actually punished for promoting evolution and downplaying intelligent design. What do you think of that?
Michael Dowd: Anybody who says intelligent design should be taught on the same footing as evolution is coming from a place that has no legal backing. I appreciate the heart of what intelligent design people are trying to do, but it's a dead-end road. It's not science; it's philosophy.
My problem with intelligent design is from a scientific standpoint. It fails to recognize the revelatory nature of science. Science is uncovering the truth of the nature of reality.

October 5: There is a Way! There is a Day!
Remember, Remember, the fifth of OCTOBER....
Think of all the people who are deeply distressed over the direction in which the Bush regime is dragging the country - and the world... All the people who are outraged over the way in which this regime is arrogantly seeking to bludgeon into submission people in the Middle East, and throughout the world, while trampling on the rights of the people in the U.S. itself... All the people who care about the future of humanity and the planet we live on, and who recognize the many ways in which the Bush regime is increasingly posing a dire threat to this... All the people who are stirred with a profound restlessness by these feelings but are held back by the fear that they are alone and powerless; or who say that they wish something could be done to stop and reverse this whole disastrous course, but nothing will make a difference; or who hope that somehow the Democrats will do something to change this, when everyday it becomes more clear that they will not... All these people, who make up a very large part of the population of this country and whose basic sentiments are shared by the majority of people throughout the world...
Imagine if, from out of this huge reservoir of people, a great wave were unleashed, moving together on the same occasion, making, through their firm stand and their massive numbers, a powerful political statement that could not be ignored: refusing that day to work, or walking out from work, taking off from school or walking out of school -- joining together, rallying and marching, drawing forward many more with them, and in many and varied forms of creative and meaningful political protest throughout the day, letting it be known that they are determined to bring this whole disastrous course to a halt by driving out the Bush Regime through the mobilization of massive political opposition.
If that were done, then the possibility of turning things around and onto a much more favorable direction would take on a whole new dimension of reality.
It would go from something only vaguely hoped for, by millions of isolated individuals, and acted on by thousands so far, to something that had undeniable moral force and unprecedented political impact.
There is a way to make this happen. There is a day, coming soon, on which people will be mobilizing to make this a reality. There is a vehicle and a means through which anguish, outrage and frustration can be transformed into truly meaningful, positive and powerful political mobilization.
On October 5, 2006, on the basis of the Call, The World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime!, people throughout the country will be stepping forward in a day of mass resistance. The breadth, the depth, the impact and the power of that day depends not only on those in The World Can't Wait organization, and others, who are already organizing for this day -- it depends on you, on us, on all those who have been hoping and searching for a means to do something that will really make a difference.
If we fail to act to make this a reality, then it will definitely make a difference -- in a decidedly negative way. But if we do take up the challenge to build for this, and then do take history into our hands on that day, through political action on the massive scale that is called for -- it can make all the difference in the world, in a very positive sense and for the possibility of a better future for humanity.
AS THE CALL, THE WORLD CAN'T WAIT - DRIVE OUT THE BUSH REGIME!, CONCLUDES:
"The point is this: history is full of examples where people who had right on their side fought against tremendous odds and were victorious. And it is also full of examples of people passively hoping to wait it out, only to get swallowed up by a horror beyond what they ever imagined. The future is unwritten. WHICH ONE WE GET IS UP TO US."

'NOW' VIDEOS: Will The 2008 Vote Be Fair?
PBS Explores Many Of The Ways Republicans And The DoJ Are Working To Disenfranchise Democratic Leaning Voters.
Guest Blogged by Alan Breslauer
Will The 2008 Vote Be Fair? That was the topic addressed by host David Brancaccio and former Justice Department official David Becker on NOW last Friday. Part I (at left, 10:01) begins with a discussion of Photo ID laws to prevent the "invented problem" of voter fraud. The discussion continues at the 6:15 mark on the topics of voter caging and voter purging --- when the DoJ requires jurisdictions to purge their voter rolls when they do not match census estimates.
Part II (at right, 9:50) begins with Becker explaining how the Bush 43 Justice Department has subverted its traditional mission: "During about a five year span, not one single case was brought on behalf of African Americans in the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division". Becker goes on to state that policies were established that favored Republicans and disfavored Democrats in an effort to "gam[e] the system" to retain power.
Next, Brancaccio and Becker explore how the U.S. Attorney scandal fits in to the bigger picture. Becker: "The DoJ, especially under Alberto Gonzales, was being used as an arm of the right wing of the Republican Party to effectuate partisan gains in elections". Finally, the program concludes with a discussion on voting machines and Florida's 13th District.

Here it comes again
God Vs The 3%!
This is a tough match for the 3%. God has been winning this one for years. God beat Al Gore. God beat John Kerry.
God put Joe Lieberman back in Congress!
So here we are again. Once again the elections take at turn toward God and away from the 3%.
Do you think it was God who made The Surge a success? President George Bush thinks so.
Why do the 3% fear God?
Because God keeps kicking their asses!
The Religious Right
The Religious Right loves Huckabee. They say Mike shares their views and values. Now you might not agree with Mike, but you can easily see how folks like Mike swing the whole process to The Right.
Candidates like Hillary and Obama can not just stand by while the Republican take the high moral ground again. Mitt saw Mike's success and now Mitt has his own hand-hold on the high ground..
Watch the scramble as both parties salute the flag and charge up the family values hill.

Morning MMR
had a light snow last night. cincy is funny about this stuff. we call it the white death. at the least hint of winter weather, the tv news goes into 'o my god' mode, the lines form at the store to clean out the bread and milk. if we had a quarter inch, thats a lot, yet schools with the exception of the city district are delayed up to 2 hours. time to take the kids to school (we're classified as not being cost effective for transportation, an interesting exception to the school bus law. they will reimburse me a dollar a day if i file a ream of paperwork). waiting on the jobs report at 8:30.
have a good one, bbl.
Annette....it ain't no picnic.
I, too, have been blessed.
I have a "Mighty Mouth", and a "Fingers McGee".
One won't think before acting and speaking, and the other has to snoop and touch everything.
Both are brilliant and have exceptional musical talents.
God gave them to me, because he knew I was the only one with enough patience to let them survive to adulthood.
God makes them THAT cute for a reason...oh yes he does.
Unconditional love, Amen.

With the CA SoS decertifying DRE Touchscreens & now finding vulnerability with the InkaVote Plus Precinct Ballot Recorder, and a new study by studycaliforniaballots.org which has found that the old MicroTallySystem central tabulator to be unacceptably inaccurate, it is time to retrieve elections from the corporations and from computer technology and return them to the citizens gy reinstituting old fashioned Hand Counted Paper Ballots at the Precinct Level!
L.A. County vote system vulnerable to hackers
Secretary of state's report also finds potential for fraud with InkaVote Plus system.

SACRAMENTO - Consultants for Secretary of State Debra Bowen said Friday they found several flaws in Los Angeles County's voting system that could leave it vulnerable to fraud or electronic hacking.
The report found that seals on boxes used to carry the system hardware could be reopened and then resealed without detection, allowing the machinery open to tampering, and that some password-protected systems could be hacked with available cracker programs. There were also cases where encrypted files containing sensitive data could be decrypted.
The study was performed as part of Bowen's "top-to-bottom" review of voting systems throughout the state. Los Angeles County's InkaVote Plus system is the last to be studied, because vendor Election Systems & Software failed to provide information to Bowen's consulting team on time earlier this year.

On Kucinich, UFO's and Crazy Coots
Brett's right, Alice. It wasn't a character judgment. I was only talking about how each of the candidates are coming off to me. I wasn't too kind to my favorite of the bunch, either.
I don't think Kucinich is lame for seeing a UFO. I like that about him. Out of all the candidates, Kucinich seems to be the one I could sit down and have some herbal tea with. I think we'd be good buddies.
My survey thoughts
About Air America - I just don't think the McLaughlin Group on the radio 24/7 can work. Air America is missing it's humor. Without Marc Maron and Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo - or humor on a par with those three - Air America is stale and wonky, for the most part. Sam's a brilliantly funny guy but his show is very, very serious most of the time. Randi tries to be funny but I don't get into her humor very much. And those pre-recorded comedy bits she uses are horrible. As bad as Springers were. I don't know if Lionel or Jon Elliot are funny since I don't listen much anymore. I know Thom Hartmann isn't - but his show is good when I hear it. The Turk tries to be funny, and I generally like him, but his humor falls flat to me.
If I ruled the world, or AAR, I'd get Maron back. I'd try and convince Janeane to show up more and have Sam on every day. Rachel and Kent can stay. But I'd be ditching Lionel and getting someone on a par (if that's even possible) with Maron or Franken to replace him.
more on the Christian Bashing and Annette's post
I really liked Annette's post from last night. I don't consider myself a religious person anymore but I know they're not all the same. There's lots of the fundy idiots (in Christianity, in Judaism, in Islam, in Buddhism, in every religion) but just because someone's a preacher or takes their religious faith seriously doesn't make them a potential nazi. There's lots of potential nazism everywhere, even over here on the left. Anytime we get to thinking that it's our way or no way, we're being fundamentalist and fascist-like, just as much as the pat robertsons and jerry falwells out there. And I do hear that kind of thing expressed in liberal/leftist circles. That it's got to be this ONE certain way or nothing. No sense of compromise. No budging. It's a trap either way, whether it's left or right. And I'm a lefty, not a centrist. But I know it takes all kinds to make the world go round.
As for me and religion, I'm a big fan of the writings of John Shelby Spong and Marcus Borg, Elaine Pagels and Karen Armstrong ... a kind of "new thought" version of Christianity that's very progressive and more humanistic than the kind I knew growing up.
The only thing I disagreed about the post is I'm not as discouraged with the Dem party as Annette is these days.
my survey thoughts II
I thought it was pretty good !
Mystic23 is absolutely right that AAR went from all comics ( well almost) to NO comics and we badly need humor and we need someone that can discuss books and movies
Maron is excellent at movies ( and books ) and does great movie /book interviews and janeane raeding list was always AMAZING!!
Sam..another idea
