Breaking: House passes Iraq redeployment bill. Tonight, the House of Representatives voted 218-203 to pass a $50 billion funding bill for Iraq that would require withdrawal of most U.S. troops from Iraq to begin within 30 days of the bill’s enactment, with a completion goal of Dec. 15, 2008. The AP reports: The bill was on shaky ground this week, after some liberal Democrats said they were concerned it was too soft and would not force Bush to end the war. Conservative Democrats said they thought it went too far and would tie the hands of military commanders. Uncertain the bill would pass, Pelosi on Wednesday delayed a vote by several hours while she met with supporters and asked them to help her round up votes. The bill’s prospects brightened somewhat early Wednesday after three leading anti-war Democrats announced they would support it. California Reps. Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters said they had agreed to swing behind it because the bill explicitly states the money should be used to bring troops home. Political Parties A political party is an organization of individuals with common ideology or program about governing the society. Political parties yearn for power, which they seize in nations usually through forming a government, taking seats in the parliament or both. When political parties are not represented in the government, they function as opposition to the ruling parties. Political parties which do not obtain sufficient votes, do not get seats in the parliament or participate in the government. In such cases they exercise their power, however limited it may be, trying to influence the parliament, the government and the general public through publications and broadcasts, meetings, demonstrations and other campaigns, or by making alliances with other parties. The famous one-dimensional left-right ideological scale of political parties originates from the seating arrangements of the 1789 French National Assembly, where Third Estate consisted of revolutionaries and sat on the left side, and members of the First Estate, the nobles, sat on the right. The left-right scale in modern times is intended to describe political parties' power basis, affiliations and programs: - the right wing consists of conservative, religious and/or rich people, working for preserving the existing unequal and unjust distribution of social and economic power, or restoring earlier, even more unequal, social systems, the extreme right being fascists, nazis, racists and other militarists trying to impose a centralized rule of the brutes, based on criteria as wealth, religion, race, ethnicity, or family linkage; - the left wing is the power elite pretending to represent less wealthy people, more liberal, allegedly working for reforms improving the conditions of lower classes, extreme left is holding radical or revolutionary programs about one party dictatorship, often using the words communism, socialism, leninism, marxism as excuse, cover and trick of confusion in their project for taking the power within the state. All political parties, no matter how left or right they are placed on the deceptive ideological scale, are statist, they protect the state and use it for promoting own corrupt agenda of governing. Power and government is the dream and the Holiness of political parties. They want power over the people, they want to rule, they want to oppress and exploit the subjects of the state, not substantially different from what and how a monarch does. -Submitted by toniD on Wed, 11/14/2007 - 11:31pm.-Submitted by Alice on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 12:46am.

Chevron settles on Iraq oil-for-food scandal What one minute. I thought the dirtbags involved in this disgraceful activity with Iraq were limited to France, Germany, Putin and everyone else who was against the US invasion of Iraq. The second largest oil company in America settles for $30 million to put this scandal behind them though it's much more of a whimper compared to the venom spewed by the media and administration just a few short years ago. Who would imagine that a good old Texas company was involved in such a program? Chevron, the No. 2 U.S. oil company, obtained Iraqi oil under the program from third parties that paid secret, illegal surcharges to the former government of Iraq, prosecutors said. Chevron will not be prosecuted and will continue to cooperate with investigators, prosecutors said. http://www.americablog.com/2007/11/chevron-settles-on-iraq-oil-for-food.... Sure, we all enjoy the 'dewey' callers getting smacked down in their own driveling ignorance on the radio, but this is a different medium altogether. The mind processes aggression differently in the written word than it does auditorily. In speaking, whether in person or via telephone, communication is far more dynamic than one dimensional text. Voice inflections, tone, volume, and the ability to interrupt your adversary with counterpoints make vocal discourse more of a fair game for both sides. The outcome is usually determined by intellectual prowess and the spoken words eventually fade into the ether.
Mark Cuban Challenges BillSubmitted by toniD on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 1:07am.
Mark Cuban Challenges Bill O’Reilly To Face Him On Countdown Download (2830) | Play (3688) Download (1520) | Play (1762) On Tuesday’s Countdown, Keith Olbermann takes on the Falafel Guy for his outrageous attacks on Mark Cuban and his total lack of knowledge when it comes to the history of free speech. O’Reilly has suggested that somehow FDR would have arrested and jailed Cuban for producing a movie like Brian De Palma’s Redacted (which he admits he’s never seen) or for simply criticizing BillO himself. O’Reilly also called on his minions to boycott Redacted and hold signs up saying “support the troops” outside any theater that shows the film and at Maverick games. Like those 70-80 year olds that make up most of Billo’s audience are going to go sit outside the American Airlines Center with signs. Cuban responded by challenging The Culture Warrior to watch the movie with him and appear with him on Countdown to talk about the movie — of course, Keith would get to moderate. Cuban’s Challenge: Download (1549) | Play (1924) Download (379) | Play (941) Olbermann: “He (Cuban) has been under Bill O’Reilly’s evil gaze since March of this year and as usual, BillO’s King Lear act in which he threatens somebody with terrible consequences and boycotts and plagues of locusts, has produced nothing tangible other than making the object of his impotent rage richer.” http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/11/14/mark-cuban-challenges-bill-orei... We are saved, we are liberated and enlightened, by perceiving the hitherto unperceived good that is already within us, by returning to our eternal ground and remaining where, without knowing it, we have always been. from The Perennial Philosophy

Baptist Convention Kicks Out a Church Tolerant of Gays & LesbianSubmitted by Kevin © on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 3:08am.
Members of a Charlotte church met for the first time Wednesday night since they were booted out of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Myers Park Baptist Church is open and accepting to gay and lesbian parishioners. On Wednesday, we went to the church to see what members think about getting kicked out of the denomination. The church has been around since the 1940s and has been part of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina--until Tuesday. The convention met in Greensboro and voted to kick the church out since it allows gay and lesbian people to be members and hold positions in the church. Robin Johnston is a long-time member of the church. She says being "kicked out" is actually a relief. "I think there are those of us here--and I won't speak for everybody in the congregation--but I'm certainly one of them who kind of wears this as a badge of honor," Johnston said. Member Todd Rubenson says he strongly supports the church, but he says this week has been bittersweet. "This is a relationship that we had with the Baptist convention for many, many years--I think over 60 years, and we don't take the severing of that relationship lightly at all," he said. No one from the Baptist convention would return our calls Wednesday night. Their website says all are welcome to attend Baptist churches, but the convention believes homosexuality is a sin and churches, therefore, should not allow homosexuals to join. Speaking The Truth ! This is crazy!!I hate the Taliban and,I'm not sure about 9/11 either way..But,Free speech, dissent and,not believing everything your told use to be a big part of being a American.. by Barbara Peterson Do you remember when Bush Jr. said, “either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists”? Well, he meant it. Homeland Security’s sub-committee on terrorism risk assessment convened a hearing on 11-06-2007 to discuss “using the Web as a weapon – the Internet as a tool for violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism.” In a video of this meeting, which was last aired by C-Span on 11-12-2007, members of the sub-committee clearly pointed to Internet sites that question the legitimacy of the official 9/11 story as tools for recruiting terrorists. One of these “media portals” displayed in the Power Point presentation is Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. This site is sandwiched between a Taliban training manual, and several Taliban recruitment sites showing how to make bombs, take captives, and blow buildings up. By portraying sites such as Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth as terrorist recruitment organizations, the Department of Homeland Security has taken a dangerous step towards punishing anyone who questions the government. If you go to the A&E Website, you will see that it is a group of “ 212 architectural and engineering professionals and 518 other supporters including A/E students who have joined...in demanding of Congress a truly independent investigation of the collapse of the WTC buildings.” Their mission statement is, “To research and to disseminate the truth of the 9/11 “collapses” of all 3 WTC high-rise buildings to every architect and engineer.” I cannot find any indication that this site promotes terrorism, much less recruits terrorists for the Taliban, yet the Department of Homeland Security has taken the stance that the site is “intended to recruit or inflame the emotions” (Weitzman, M.), and lumps it in with sites disseminating the Taliban Training Manual, and advocating suicide bombings. If all Websites that disagree with the official government explanation of the collapse of the WTC towers is placed on a list of suspected terrorist Websites, what is next? Like Bush Jr. stated: “either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.” Homeland Security Links 9/11 Truthers to TalibanSubmitted by dan on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 6:32am.

Thud! More banking results announced That's the sound coming from Barclays in the UK who are writing down $2.7 billion of bad business. Every day, more bad news from Big Finance and as much as they say "this is it" they have no idea. The numbers continue to change and probably will continue to bounce around for a while. A bit of oversight and regulation could have limited the pain but for some reason, oversight is viewed as a bad thing with Republicans who would have none of it. While we're at it, a quick overview of failed GOP policies. Keep it handy as we move into the election year. The list can go on and on and on. Have a go at it. Democrats in Washington need to step back and see what the rest of us see and take action. Commenting on book publisher Judith Regan's allegation that a senior executive at News Corp told her to lie to federal investigators about her affair with Kerik to protect Giuliani's nomination of Kerik as homeland security secretary, one McCain aide said, "Obviously there are some very serious charges involved for a guy who was his protégé and one of his closest friends. And for Rudy to go out and say this is not worthy of discussion when it directly involves him and his decision making, and in the case of department of homeland security, the security of our country - it's disturbing that Rudy would think it's not something he is going to have to address. New Attorney General opposes changes to wiretap law WASHINGTON (CNN) — In his second day on the job, Attorney General Michael Mukasey leaped into the political fray, telling a key Democratic senator he opposes his electronic surveillance plan and would recommend the president veto it if it is passed. In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on the eve of crucial committee votes to update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), Mukasey was adamant in opposing Leahy's plan for changing the law. Mukasey and Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell co-signed the letter released Wednesday night by the Justice Department. "We strongly oppose the proposed substitute amendment. If the substitute is part of a bill that is presented to the president, we and the president's other senior advisers will recommend that he veto the bill," they said. Leahy last week introduced his substitute to a FISA modernization bill already approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee. That effort, led by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., won wide bipartisan support and is backed by the administration. It includes retroactive immunity to legally protect the telecommunications companies which cooperated with the administration's classified warrantless surveillance program. Leahy, who had opposed Mukasey's confirmation last week, is adamantly opposed to the immunity provision. Mukasey and McConnell listed nearly a dozen other provisions or omissions in the Leahy plan which they said "would not provide the intelligence community with the tools it needs effectively to collect foreign intelligence information vital for the security of the nation." The White House, meanwhile, released a statement calling Leahy's plan "a step back for our nation's security." Leahy and many of his Democratic allies back provisions which they believe provide essential civil liberties protections against excessive government intrusion and potential abuse. The veto threat adds to an already testy atmosphere in which the highly partisan Senate Judiciary Committee has struggled unsuccessfully to reach a consensus on how to update the 30-year-old FISA law, which they agree has been overtaken by dramatic changes in technology. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/11/14/new-attorney-general-opp... good morningSubmitted by Lucille on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 9:14am.

The Dems in Congress have it made. Everyone knows they will fully fund the War on Terror without restrictions. So they are free to pretend that they would end the fighting in Iraq if they could. When Hillary wins next year, that luxury will be lost. Instead of telling us what they would do "if only they could", they will be responsible for leading this country while we are at war. Will Iraq be turned over to Iran? Will Afghanistan be given to the Taliban? Will Pakistan's Nucs fall to Ben Laden? Will Iran be allowed to Nuke Israel? Let's see what the Dems have to say about that! The mask will be off and the 97% will be forced to step up as they always do. As heardSubmitted by Fernando on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 9:53am.

Iraq-Afghanistan War Measure Faces Bush Veto By Dan Robinson Capitol Hill 14 November 2007 The Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has approved a measure to provide $50 billion in short-term funding for U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. VOA's Dan Robinson reports the legislation, which passed the House by a vote of218 to 203, now awaits a vote in the Senate where Republicans have predicted it will not pass, and also faces a veto threat from President Bush. But this brought a renewed veto threat from the White House, where press secretary Dana Perino briefed reporters. "Once again they plan to send the president a bill that they know he will veto. This is for political posturing and to appease radical groups," she said. Anti-War Voters Lash Out at Democrats They Helped Put in OfficeSubmitted by MMRules on Thu, 11/15/2007 - 10:03am.
Nicholas Johnston (Bloomberg) -- When the Democratic Party called up recently to ask Myrna Burgess for a campaign contribution, she answered with an emphatic ``no.'' ``Nothing has been done as far as the war is concerned,'' said Burgess, 72, an Amtrak worker from Levittown, Pennsylvania. More than a year after anti-war voters like Burgess helped give Democrats control of Congress, there are more troops in Iraq, lawmakers have approved almost $100 billion in new war spending and congressional approval ratings are at record lows. Democrats now worry that their inability to make good on campaign promises to end or slow the war in Iraq will have consequences. The disaffection has already fueled at least four anti-war primary challenges to party incumbents, raising fears among some lawmakers of an intra-party fight that could drain momentum before next year's elections. Guest Blogged by John Gideon of VotersUnite.org An editorial in today’s Daytona Beach News-Journal begins: “For votes to count, they must be counted, and accurately. Americans expect tallies to be quick, as well. “It doesn't always work that way. Ongoing problems with electronic vote-counting machines have eroded voter confidence and raised anxiety about the potential for tampering. In an era when voter-participation levels are already low, it's a problem local, state and federal leaders should confront. “That effort should start with coordinated, national information-sharing. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission, created in 2004, was charged with creating a central clearinghouse detailing glitches, hardware problems and tampering attempts. That database has yet to be created. So when supervisors in Illinois or California --- or Volusia or Flagler counties --- want to know about potential problems with a system, their only recourse is to turn to the Internet. Grass-roots voting-accuracy advocates, to their credit, are operating informational Web sites, but elections officials should have an objective source to turn to --- especially since advocacy groups might not always have access to insider information about how an error occurred.”... Bit chilly here... Good Morning, All! White House: Reality Of Iraq War Has A Well-Known Liberal Bias "Yesterday, Congress’s Joint Economic Committee produced a report finding that the “hidden” economic costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars totaled approximately $1.5 trillion, costing the average U.S. family of four more than $20,000. (View the full report here.) The total includes higher oil prices, the expense of treating wounded veterans, and interest payments on the money borrowed to pay for the wars. Office of Management and Budget director Jim Nussle blasted a congressional report that pegged the cost of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan at $1.6 trillion through next year, saying the study by the Joint Economic Committee was 'clearly partisan.'" It's a good thing Wolfowitz's prophecy of Iraq paying for itself with oil money has materialized as it has or we'd be in deep shit right about now! Can you imagine how much worse it would be if we were nose diving into a recession with Energy costs push consumer prices higher just before the holidays? According to Russian legal experts, the greatest concern to the American people are the underlying provisions of this new law, and which, they state, are written ‘so broadly’ as to outlaw all forms of protest against the war. These provisions state: "(ii) to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; or (b) The prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are not limited to, (i) the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order, and (ii) the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person. (c) the term "United States person" means any United States citizen, permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign branches), or any person in the United States. All agencies of the United States Government are hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order and, where appropriate, to advise the Secretary of the Treasury in a timely manner of the measures taken." ... My name it is Mark Bennett, I am a Yorkshire man
I earn my living by my pen, tell a stirring tale I can
But the one I tell you now, boys, was writ by foolish men
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
Come all you young married men, you boys of the bulldog breed
We're looking for the strong and brave, that's what Britannia needs
And we'll fight the Hun in Flanders, and the Germans on the Seine
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
We first set out to Egypt where the heat was hard to bear
We were waiting for the call to France, for the boches were fighting there
And we talked of what we'd do, boys, brother, son, and friend
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
At last we heard the push was on and we sailed across the Med
We little thought in two weeks' time we'd most of us be dead
And the girls at home would weep with a grief that's hard to mend
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
With shouts of joy we lads did charge towards the German wire
Our handsome mate was the first to fall as the guns they opened fire
His face no longer handsome, on the barbed wire met his end
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
We had a sergeant-major, bold by nature, Bold by name
But the German guns don't pick and choose, and Bold died just the same
And the other gallants followed, their kind of lives to spend
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again
We did not want to lose you, but we thought you ought to go
Your king and country needed you - Lord Kitchener told us so
But the story now I've told you was writ by foolish men
And the petals fell from the rose of York, never to bloom again

Venezuela: Between Ballots and Bullets
by James Petras
Venezuela’s democratically elected Present Chavez faces the most serious threat since the April 11, 2002 military coup. Violent street demonstrations by privileged middle and upper middle class university students have led to major street battles in and around the center of Caracas. More seriously, the former Minister of Defense, General Raul Isaias Baduel, who resigned in July, has made explicit calls for a military coup in a November 5th press conference which he convoked exclusively for the right and far-right mass media and political parties, while striking a posture as an ‘individual’ dissident. The entire international and local private mass media has played up Baduel’s speeches, press conferences along with fabricated accounts of the oppositionist student rampages, presenting them as peaceful protests for democratic rights against the government referendum scheduled for December 2, 2007.
...
History has repeatedly taught that when you put social democracy, egalitarianism and popular power at the top of the political agenda, as Chavez has done, and as the vast majority of the populace enthusiastically responds, the Right, the reactionary military, the ‘Centrist’ political defectors and ideologues, the White House, the hysterical middle classes and the Church cardinals will sacrifice any and all democratic freedoms to defend their property, privileges and power by whatever means and at whatever cost necessary. In the current all-pervasive confrontation between the popular classes of Venezuela and their oligarchic and military enemies, only by morally, politically and organizationally arming the people can the continuity of the democratic process of social transformation be guaranteed. Change will come, the question is whether it will be through the ballot or the bullet.
