Maybe if all conservatives get deathly ill

we'll be able to get healthcare for all American children:

Before his illness, Giuliani the Mayor resembled Giuliani the Presidential Candidate. Both showed little interest in expanding coverage to New York's poor or uninsured, and both Giulianis gave only tepid support and financial backing to an S-CHIP-style program for New York's uninsured children. By Giuliani's own description, however, all that changed when he came face-to-face with his own mortality.

Of course, all that  changed when he got better. We need Conservatives to get deathly sick and stay sick if we really want children to get healthcare.

Frontline Looks at

Frontline Looks at Extraordinary Rendition
By Spencer Ackerman - November 6, 2007, 11:02AM

For sheer audacity, nothing beats the sight of a spokesman for the Egyptian interior ministry describing someone else's experience of being kidnapped, blindfolded, taken to a far-away prison and tortured this way: "Some people love to attract the limelight to give themselves more importance than necessary." That display of official cynicism is just one of the treats Frontline has in store for tonight's exploration of the anti-terrorist kidnapping practice known as extraordinary rendition.

The rendition subject the Egyptian interior spokesman described is Abu Omar, a hardline Egyptian-born cleric who was kidnapped by the Italians in coordination with the CIA in 2003 before being rendered to Egypt and tortured. Abu Omar's rendition was superficially a success -- the snatch worked; and he was indeed tortured -- but Italian prosecutors were able to learn the identities of the CIA operatives behind the rendition and have put them on trial in absentia.

Interestingly, Abu Omar gives a kind of non-denial denial when asked by Frontline if he's a terrorist, which crystallizes the issue at its most complex: is it acceptable to torture people who intend to carry out atrocities?

Frontline also profiles another rendition victim -- Bisher al-Rawi, a British national picked up in Gambia in 2002 after the CIA believed he had ties to al-Qaeda -- but the program also highlights how U.S. allies are taking their cues from the U.S.'s embrace of rendition as a sound counterterrorism practice. In December, following the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia, the Kenyan authorities rounded up a number of Somalis at their shared border and flew them to Ethiopia for harsh treatment. Among them was the wife of an al-Qaeda operative named Fazul Abdullah, who helped pull off the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that murdered over 200 people. The Ethiopian prime minister unapologetically told Frontline, "You find the wife, you don't find the husband, and the wife is fleeing the battlefield, you do not know whether the wife is just a wife or a comrade and a colleague in the art of terrorism."

Military Bill Omits War Funds

WASHINGTON (AP) - House and Senate negotiators agreed Tuesday on a $460 billion Pentagon bill that bankrolls pricey weapons systems and bomb-resistant vehicles for troops, but has little for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democrats said they wouldn't leave troops in the lurch, but were reluctant to say when Congress might consider President Bush's $196 billion request to pay expressly for combat operations.

Republicans supported the spending measure, but said the lack of war money would cause a tremendous strain on the military. To keep the wars afloat, the Pentagon would have to transfer money from less urgent accounts, such as personnel and training programs....

Just What Are They Paid For

Dean Baker:

The Financial Times reports that several market analysts now think that the fallout from bad mortgage debt will continue for some time and be much worse than they had expected. Given that these people are paid very high salaries to understand these markets, it would be worth asking why they apparently got this one so badly wrong. It would also be a very good story to report on the extent to which these high priced experts suffer any professional consequences as a result of such a costly mistake.

US Interrogators Unaware That They Are,Engaged In Torture

http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0514-05.htm

Torture at Abu Ghraib Followed CIA's Manual
by Alfred W. McCoy

THE PHOTOS from Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison are snapshots not of simple brutality or a breakdown in discipline but of CIA torture techniques that have metastasized over the past 50 years like an undetected cancer inside the US intelligence community. From 1950 to 1962, the CIA led secret research into coercion and consciousness that reached a billion dollars at peak. After experiments with hallucinogenic drugs, electric shocks, and sensory deprivation, this CIA research produced a new method of torture that was psychological, not physical -- best described as "no touch" torture.

==

For more than 50 years, the CIA's no-touch methods have become so widely accepted that US interrogators seem unaware that they are, in fact, engaged in systematic torture. But now, through these photographs from Abu Ghraib, we can see the reality of these techniques. We have a chance to join fully with the international community in repudiating a practice that, more than any other, represents a denial of democracy.

Jim Lehrer sticks up for traditional media. In an address at the University of Texas last night, PBS Newshour host Jim Lehrer warned against “spicing up” the news. “You want to be entertained? Go to the circus, please. Do not watch ‘The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,’” he said. Lehrer added, while increasing numbers of Americans are going online for their news, he’s not worried about the future of traditional media:

“The bloggers are talkers, commentators, not reporters. The talk-show hosts are reactors, commentators, not reporters,” Lehrer said. “The search engines can search but do not report. All of them, every single one of them, have to have the news in order to exist and thrive.”

The deadliest year for US troops in Iraq

by John Bruhns (Philadelphia) · 11/06/2007

It's now official that 2007 has been the deadliest year for US troops since the start of the war.

5 troops killed just in the past day.

I hate to state the obvious but more troops = more targets for those who want to kill us.

The statistics are alarming and disturbing. Especially in regard to the Iraqis.

2.3 million have been displaced because of this illegal war and an average of 56 are killed each day. Two-thirds of those displaced in Iraq are children under the age of 12.

How does the US military plan to help the situation? By conducting another major military operation in Iraq.

Did it ever occur to the idiots who started this war and continue it that military force has proven time and time again to be not only a failure but a contributor to this entire chaotic mess ?? Apparently not.

I'll bet that one of Bush's lackeys like Dana Perino will conduct a press conference sometime today to promote the continued success of the "surge."

I guess they think they can put whipped cream on shit and expect that to taste good too ?? There is no way to sugarcoat this.

I hate being lied to , but when you insult my intelligence it just ads insult to injury -- probably speaking for us all.

The right-wing will tell me that posts like this are bad for morale. That I have my facts wrong. That I'm drinking "kool-aid." That I can't support the troops without supporting their mission. Give me a break.

I wonder how good it is for the morale of US soldiers who will open up the Army Times just to read that after 5+ years of war we are losing more troops then ever in a ravaged war-torn country that they are told they are liberating.

The bottom line: US troop deaths have hit a record high and the Iraqis have no freedom. Only death, destruction, displacement, sectarian civil war, and misery -- courtesy of George W. Bush.

It's a tragic time in American history when the people look at their Commander in Chief as a fraud with no honor.

Reid To Vote Against

Reid To Vote Against Mukasey: Says He Was "Profoundly Disturbed" By Waterboarding Evasions
By Greg Sargent - November 6, 2007, 2:37PM
In a statement sent our way moments ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just came out and opposed Mukasey's confirmation as AG. Key quote:

“I was profoundly disturbed by statements Judge Michael Mukasey made during his confirmation hearings concerning executive power, and about the legality of the use of waterboarding as an interrogation technique. As a result, I cannot in good conscience vote to approve his nomination to be Attorney General of the United States."

Reid's opposition, of course, won't stop Mukasey's confirmation. Reid had earlier refused to declare his opposition to Mukasey, claiming that he didn't want to get out front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which voted today to send the confirmation to a full Senate vote. Reid is holding a presser as we speak.

Meanwhile, Reid will have another chance ahead to prove his opposition to waterboarding. Congress is considering a bill that would explicitly ban this and other extreme interrogation techniques, and Reid can ensure that this bill comes to the floor for a vote.

More details on that here. Reid's full statement after the jump.

http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/11/reid_to_vote_against_mukasey_says_...

Fuck Reid

too...

Oh Lucille, it will be killed

The Dems have no backbone, remember!

But I am glad that it at least made it to the floor.

It's up to 109

Dems voting to table.

There are now

21 Republicans voting nay. Which means they are for the impeachment.

it will be killed

geez you really know how to lift my spirits up.....sniff!!

Here's a question for ya

How would you like to leave work behind the dude you voted to impeach? Would you feel safe? Could you sleep? Put yourself in their shoes and then see if you have the room to scoff.

Sometimes we sit behind our monitors and we forget how other people might feel. It's just a table. It wasn't going to go anywhere anyway.

im going to cook....cant take this

any longer...

My Living Will

Last night, my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

So she got up, unplugged the TV, and threw out my wine.

She's such a bitch.

;-p

It's Kucinich's?

Hope he's stepped up the security.

GBC

You told her to pull the plug. You said nothing about throwing out fluids. LOL

There are...

71 brave Republicans for not killing the impeachment. Hmmmm

more republicans

they are fucking steny for sure, and i am loving it!!

War Dog...

just stopped masterbating and started crying! ;D

Looks like the repubs

were all ordered to change their vote to Nay. There are 114 votes to impeach for the Repubs and 69 votes for the dems.

Stands 225 to 186 at this point.

Repubs trying to pull something.

I bet

cheney just wet himself.

The Stupid Demo's voting to table are worried about 2008 !!

They are worried that a different VP than Cheney could upset their plans for

a Democratic Pres.being elected in 2008..
All the care about is 2008..
Getting a Demo in the White house!
And,getting re-elected themselves..Period!!

More Reps voting Nay than Demo's..Pretty sad !!
