Student hounds prof running

Student hounds prof running for Congress By DAVID EGGERT, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 27 minutes ago

A politically conservative student armed with a video camera and a Web site is trying to force a Democratic congressional candidate out of his teaching job at Central Michigan University.

Dennis Lennox, a 23-year-old junior, has posted videos on YouTube of himself questioning assistant professor Gary Peters about campaigning for office while holding a prestigious position at the university.

Some say Lennox is persistent. Others accuse him of pandering for attention.

"What I'm doing isn't about getting media attention," said Lennox, a political science major. "I'm speaking for the hundreds of students, alumni, taxpayers and even legislators who have complained because Gary Peters won't pick between Congress and campus."

In one video Lennox posted online, Peters is seen walking to his car while Lennox asks him several questions, including whether he is angry about his campaign not getting "positive press." Peters doesn't respond.

Peters said in an interview this week with The Associated Press that his university position is part-time and privately funded.

"The bottom line is that people who run for public office still need to pay the bills and still need to work," he said. He drives 130 miles from a Detroit suburb to Mount Pleasant to teach class once a week.

Peters, 48, is seeking the Democratic nomination to face Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg in Oakland County, one of the top congressional targets for Democrats nationally in 2008.

"If I was running for Congress in a seat where I had no chance of winning, I probably wouldn't have any attention put on me at all," said Peters, a former state senator who lost a close race for Michigan attorney general in 2002.

Former sailor announces run for Congress (Rush Phony Soldier)

HICKORY, N.C. — A former sailor and double amputee said Wednesday he would run next year for the congressional seat currently held by GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry.

Daniel Johnson, who has been an assistant Wake County prosecutor for the past three years, will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge McHenry in the 10th Congressional District.

Johnson, 31, moved back to his native Hickory earlier this month.

“I promise to rise above the divisive politics that have plagued our government for too long, and focus on representing the values and priorities of North Carolina,” Johnson said in a news release.

As a Navy ensign, Johnson received the Navy’s highest peacetime award for bravery when he rescued a fellow sailor entangled in a rope connecting a Navy ship to a tugboat off the South Korean coast in 1999. The rope ensnared Johnson, flipping him onto his back and amputating both legs at the calf.

After working as an aide to then-U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., another veteran and amputee, Johnson went to law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ecuador wants military base in Miami

NAPLES (Reuters) - Ecuador's leftist President Rafael Correa said Washington must let him open a military base in Miami if the United States wants to keep using an air base on Ecuador's Pacific coast.

Correa has refused to renew Washington's lease on the Manta air base, set to expire in 2009. U.S. officials say it is vital for counter-narcotics surveillance operations on Pacific drug-running routes.

"We'll renew the base on one condition: that they let us put a base in Miami -- an Ecuadorean base," Correa said in an interview during a trip to Italy.

"If there's no problem having foreign soldiers on a country's soil, surely they'll let us have an Ecuadorean base in the United States."

The U.S. embassy to Ecuador says on its Web site that anti-narcotics flights from Manta gathered information behind more than 60 percent of illegal drug seizures on the high seas of the Eastern Pacific last year.......

Turkey, not US, to decide on N.Iraq moves: Erdogan

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday Ankara would not be influenced by U.S. concerns when deciding whether to launch an incursion into northern Iraq to crush Kurdish guerrillas hiding there.

Replying to reporters' questions during a visit to Romania, Erdogan said he wanted the United States to act with Turkey, a NATO ally, against the rebels. He did not say whether this meant a joint military operation.

"(The United States) may not want us to carry out a cross-border operation. But it is we who will decide whether to do one or not," Erdogan said.

"As a strategic ally of Turkey, the United States has to act together with Turkey. We acted together with them in Afghanistan. We must take and we will take steps against terrorism both on a national and an international level."

Turkish nationalist opposition parties have accused Erdogan and his government of being too soft on terrorism and of being swayed by U.S. pressure not to send troops into Iraq.

Anti-U.S. sentiment has soared in Turkey over the past few years due to Washington's refusal to crack down on the rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), who use northern Iraq as a launchpad for attacks on Turkish targets........

U.S. Offers Cash to Victims in Blackwater Incident

BAGHDAD, Oct. 24 -- The U.S. Embassy on Wednesday began offering tens of thousands of dollars in payments to victims and families of victims of the Sept. 16 shootings in Baghdad involving security guards from the firm Blackwater Worldwide, according to relatives and U.S. officials.

Family members of several victims turned down the compensation, out of concern that accepting the funds would limit their future claims against the North Carolina-based security contractor and its chief executive, Erik Prince. Others said that the money being offered -- in some cases $12,500 for a death -- was paltry and that they wanted to sue Blackwater in an American court.

"This is an insult," said Firoz Fadhil Abbas, whose brother Osama was killed in a barrage of bullets. "The funeral and the wake cost more than what they offered. My brother who got killed was responsible for four families.".......

LEBANON, N.H. — Republican presidential front-runner Rudy Giuliani is leaving the door open to allowing the blind and physically disabled to carry guns. "You have a constitutional right, that is protected, to bear and carry arms. It is the Second Amendment,"

Rice: 16 words dispute 'enormously overblown'

The White House says the CIA signed off on the State of the Union.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Criticism grew last week over the White House's acknowledgment that President Bush included a 16-word statement in his State of the Union address that was based on false intelligence. The statement was part of Bush's argument to declare war on Iraq. (Bush's 16 words)

On Friday, CIA Director George Tenet took responsibility for allowing the statement to remain in Bush's address.

National security adviser Condoleezza Rice discussed the issue with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer on Sunday's "Late Edition."

BLITZER: Let's talk about the uproar that has happened over these past several days as a result of these 16 words. Listen to this.

Bush administration officials acknowledged yesterday that they heavily edited testimony on global warming, delivered to Congress on Tuesday by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after the president's top science adviser and other officials questioned its scientific basis.

Senate Democrats say they want to investigate the circumstances involved in the editing of CDC Director Julie L. Gerberding's written testimony to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on "climate change and public health." Gerberding testimony shrank from 12 pages to six after it was reviewed by the Office of Management and Budget.

White House Feels Waxman's Oversight Gaze

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 25, 2007; Page A01

For months, Rep. Henry A. Waxman, chairman of the House oversight committee, has been threatening, subpoenaing and just plain badgering Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to come before his panel to answer questions about the run-up to the Iraq war, corruption and State Department contracting.

Today, Rice will finally appear. But Waxman (D-Calif.) has not spent the week on a victory lap. He has found time to produce evidence accusing State Department security contractor Blackwater Worldwide of tax evasion, to fire off a letter to Rice demanding information about alleged mismanagement of a $1 billion contract to train Iraqi police, and to hold a hearing on uranium poisoning on Navajo land.

Waxman has become the Bush administration's worst nightmare: a Democrat in the majority with subpoena power and the inclination to overturn rocks. But in Waxman the White House also faces an indefatigable capital veteran -- with a staff renowned for its depth and experience -- who has been waiting for this for 14 years.

US Officials: New sanctions against Iran

US Officials: Administration Targets Iranian Defense Ministry, Quds Force

The Bush administration is imposing sweeping new sanctions against Iran's defense ministry, its Revolutionary Guard Corps and a number of banks to punish them for purported support for terrorist organizations in Iraq and the Middle East, missile sales and nuclear activities, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The measures, to be announced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, will cover some of the Iranian government's largest military and financial institutions, which Washington blames for supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan, Shia insurgent groups in Iraq, along with the Hamas and Hezbollah organizations, they said.

Iran's defense ministry and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps are to be designated proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile technology while several banks will be hit with sanctions for "proliferation financing," the officials told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity before the formal announcement.

The Quds force and banks will be identified as "specially designated global terrorist" groups for their activities and financing of militant groups in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East, the officials said.

In all, more than 20 Iranian entities, including individuals and companies owned or controlled by the Revolutionary Guards will be covered by the sanctions, they said.

Military may get control of

Military may get control of contractors
By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer
Thu Oct 25, 4:51 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Congress is moving to put all armed contractors operating in combat zones
under military control, acting on a Pentagon recommendation that could run
into resistance at the State Department.

The Senate this month included such a requirement in its 2008 defense authorization bill.
Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters Wednesday
he is confident the House will go along with the idea and include it in a final bill sent to
President Bush.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was to testify Thursday about the subject before the
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

She has ordered new rules for the private guards who are hired to protect U.S. diplomats.
They include increased monitoring and explicit rules on when and how they can use deadly force.
The steps were recommended by a review panel that Rice created after a deadly Sept. 16 shooting
involving Blackwater USA guards.

Rice also called for better coordination with the military, but did not explicitly act
on a suggestion by Defense Secretary Robert Gates that combatant commanders have control
over the contractors.

Levin, D-Mich., said he was not sure if Rice expressly opposed the idea. "Whether she likes
it or not, we expect to get this language" to emerge in the compromise with the House.

"It's not slapdash" and "is something we've been working on a long time," Levin said.

Blackwater guards think

Blackwater guards think shootings were ‘unjustified.’
Blackwater USA CEO Erik Prince has repeatedly insisted that
his company’s guards were “defending” themselves in the
Sept. 16 shooting that killed 17 Iraqi civilians.
But many Blackwater guards serving in Iraq disagree:

They described a grating sense among many of Blackwater guards,
especially those with years of experience, that the killings on
Sept. 16 were unjustified.

“Some guys are thinking that it was not a good shoot, that it was
not warranted,” said one Blackwater contractor, using military jargon
for an episode that results in a wrongful death.
“I don’t think there was criminal intent involved.
I just think it was the application of the use of deadly force gone horribly wrong.”

He added, “To mitigate one threat, 17 people had to die?”

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/world/middleeast/25blackwater.html

al Qaeda set the fires

which makes all the sense that is why we have to fight them over there!!

Secretary of State

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson
will announce “new sanctions against Iran” today that “accuse” the Quds
division of the Revolutionary Guard Corps of supporting terrorism and
“the entire Revolutionary Guard Corps of proliferating weapons of mass destruction.”

In a letter to Attorney

In a letter to Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey yesterday,
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee,
joined with his Democratic colleagues “in questioning the basis for”
Mukasey’s assertion that the president “can act outside the law” on national security
issues.

Crabbing Through The Blog

I was trying to be punny by saying I hate
to scroll "right"!
------
I got it.
I'm not sure if it is possible to
scroll sideways owing to the
vertical design of a scroll? I don't
recall a verb for doing the
Electronic Slide side-to-side.

but you're not bat-s**t insane!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. The saving grace !

After yesterday denying that

After yesterday denying that it “watered down” congressional
testimony by the head of the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, Bush administration officials are now acknowledging
that “they heavily edited [her] testimony on global warming.”
Officials, for example, took out the line: “CDC considers climate
change a serious public concern.”

Conservatives too busy for

Conservatives too busy for hearing on Iraq war’s cost.
White House staffers aren’t the only ones “not worried”
about the ultimate cost of the Iraq war. The Republicans
in Congress seem equally apathetic. The House Budget Committee
held a hearing today to receive testimony regarding the CBO’s
estimate that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars may total $2.4 trillion.
Only one Republican member of the committee attended.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) noted their absence:

Doggett: “I assume, by Mr. [Paul] Ryan (R-WI) being here,
that every member of this panel, including every Republican
member on that side of the aisle where all the seats are vacant,
received notice about this hearing about the cost of war in Iraq?”

Spratt: “I’m sure they did.”

Doggett: “And when was this notice of the hearing sent out?”

Spratt: “Seven days ago, as required by the rules.”

Secretary Rice acknowledged

Secretary Rice acknowledged that the administration may have
mishandled the case of Maher Arar. “We do not think that this
case was handled as it should have been. We do absolutely not
wish to transfer anyone to any place in which they might be
tortured,” she said.

toniD.....a moment of agreement?----Gare

Happy to join you in agreeing that the Randi Rhodes Show bloggers (and Randi, since I discovered SHE was the one "hinting" at this theory)....

are just as stupid and crazy as Fox News!

Agreed?-----Gare

(Here's where you start back-pedaling so you don't offende the Paranoia Patrol friends who are both Seder-shakes AND Randi's Rascals, and show that you aren't willing to acknowledge the wackadoodles on YOUR side, like any other partisan hack!)

Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)

Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and William Delahunt (D-MA)
will soon introduce legislation —
the “American Anti-Torture Act of 2007” — to
“ban torture of detainees by any U.S. government agency,
including the CIA or other intelligence units.”

Army Acknowledges Leaking

Army Acknowledges Leaking Beauchamp Docs To Drudge, Promises Investigation
October 25, 2007 -- 10:11 AM EST // //
There's been a very interesting turn in the saga of The New Republic's
"Baghdad Diarist," the American soldier in Iraq who's been accused of
fabricating negative stories about U.S. troops and publishing them in the mag.

For those of you who haven't been following this story, the soldier, Scott Thomas Beauchamp,
came under withering criticism a few months ago by conservative bloggers who alleged
he'd made up the stories about the troops. The Army conducted an internal investigation
into the affair and concluded he'd largely fabricated them. TNR has stuck by Beauchamp,
demanding that the Army publicly reveal whatever documents it had supporting the probe's
conclusion. The Army has refused.

Well, guess what -- the Army may not be willing to reveal its docs to TNR, the target
of its investigation, but it has just acknowledged that someone internally has willingly
leaked them to Matt Drudge.

This again calls into question the Army's handling of this affair in a big way. It's bad
enough that the Army hasn't been willing to show any transparency with regard to its probe
into this. It's worse still that someone -- apparently an Army official -- is leaking some
of the probe docs to Drudge, likely as part of an effort to get back at TNR.

WellCare Is Searched In

WellCare Is Searched
In State, Federal Probe
By THEO FRANCIS
October 25, 2007; Page D7

State and federal law-enforcement agents armed with a federal
search warrant raided the headquarters of WellCare Health Plans Inc.
in Tampa, Fla., according to the U.S. attorney's office there.

The New York Stock Exchange subsequently halted trading of shares
in WellCare, which provides managed-care plans for 2.3 million
Medicare and Medicaid participants nationwide. Its shares fell
$7.10, or 5.8%, to $115.17 at market close.

WellCare said in a statement that it is cooperating with authorities
and that its essential operations won't be disrupted. Our "priority
is making sure that our members have access to needed care and services,"
the statement said. Company representatives didn't return phone calls
and emails seeking further comment. A U.S. attorney's office spokesman,
Steve Cole, declined to comment.

It isn't clear what information or materials authorities were seeking
in the criminal investigation. Agents from the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, the Health and Human Services Department and the
Florida attorney general's Medicaid fraud unit participated in the raid.
