Cui Bono

this is hilarious.... this story covers the huge uptick Rockefeller has had in Telco contributions just prior to his supporting immunity for their spying on Americans;

“The idea that John Rockefeller could be bought is kind of ridiculous,” said Matt Bennett, vice president for Third Way, a moderate Democratic policy group that has supported immunity for the phone carriers.

It's possible to buy (i don't but i acknowledge it's possible) the arguement that Rockefeller has seen super secret documents that convince him that suits against the Telco spies would hurt national security. But how in the world could you be for immunity without seeing such evidence???? I guess if you are a corporatist hack!

U.S. Could Wait For "Proof" Of Iran Threat

Defense Secretary Robert Gates: U.S. Could Wait For "Proof" Of Iran Threat

(CBS/AP) The United States might delay activating its proposed missile defense sites in Europe until it has "definitive proof" of a missile threat from Iran, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday.

At a news conference after meeting Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, Gates said this was a proposal to the Russians - who strongly oppose U.S. missile defense - that has yet to be worked out in detail.

"We would consider tying together activation of the sites in Poland and the Czech Republic with definitive proof of the threat - in other words, Iranian missile testing and so on," Gates said with Topolanek at his side.

----

"We have not fully developed this proposal, but the idea was we would go forward with the negotiations, we would complete the negotiations, we would develop the sites, build the sites, but perhaps delay activating them until there was concrete proof of the threat from Iran," the defense chief said.

Canada revises indefinite terror jailing
Canada Proposes Changes to Ease Anti-Terror Law That Detains Foreign Suspects Indefinitely

Canada's government moved Monday to address a court ruling against one of its most contentious anti-terrorism measures, a law allowing authorities to detain foreign terrorism suspects indefinitely without disclosing evidence against them.

Stockwell Day, minister for public safety, said amendments to the law would provide suspects with a "special advocate" who would have access to evidence against them during court reviews of deportation orders.

Going back to my philosophy class days, if you accept the principle that they can hold people indefinitely for this reason (terror) as opposed to that (say, murder), then eventually you will accept it elsewhere as well. Acceptance of the things that don't affect us wears us down to eventually accepting the things that do.

It's only a matter of time folks. Pretty soon we'll all be terror suspects and then whoops, we'll all wind up being 'held' indefinitely.

I hear life in prison is pretty cheap, though. Beats what I've got going on here...

"Kucinich Had A UFO Encounter, According To Friend Shirley MacLaine"

In Shirley MacLaine's new book, the actress and longtime friend of Dennis Kucinich makes an interesting claim: During a visit to her home in Washington state, Kucinich said he saw a UFO and heard messages from it.

WTF ---

That fucking insane scum (Bolton) has been on the BBC spouting crap for over a month about that .... he has a new book coming out.

Here's a story on it:

Bolton Book Cites Effort to Halt Powell's Iran Initiative

WashPost

On the eve of the 2004 presidential elections, then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell secretly attempted to shift U.S. policy on Iran by telling key allies he wanted to offer "carrots" to the Islamic Republic to halt its nuclear ambitions, former U.N. ambassador John R. Bolton writes in his soon-to-be-published memoir.

Bolton, then undersecretary of state, says that he worked hard to thwart Powell's plans -- only to discover, to his dismay, that Powell's replacement, Condoleezza Rice, would pursue the same approach in President Bush's second term.

Bolton's book, "Surrender Is Not an Option: Defending America at the United Nations and Abroad," will be published next month by Threshold Editions. It provides a detailed look at key administration policy battles during the first six years of the Bush administration.......

Bolton reveals many private conversations and internal debates as the administration struggled to deal with such issues as the North Korean and Iranian nuclear threats, the tragedy in Sudan's Darfur region, the Israeli-Hezbollah war and deteriorating relations with Russia.

Bolton's recounting of these episodes adds to the growing body of insider accounts about the inner workings of the Bush administration, though this is one of the first by a leading conservative....

.....

In typically pugnacious style, Bolton lashes out at his opponents in the administration and overseas, repeatedly referring to European Union diplomats as "EUroids" and foes in State's East Asia and Pacific Affairs Bureau as "EAPeasers."

Bolton in particular criticizes Rice and one of her top aides, Undersecretary R. Nicholas Burns, for what he considers poor diplomacy. He recounts his anger -- and that of other administration conservatives -- at many of her decisions, especially her handling of North Korea, Iran and the Israeli war, arguing that Rice was too willing to make unnecessary concessions in pursuit of ineffectual achievements......

Senate Judiciary Committee

Senate Judiciary Committee members accused the White House of allowing the Intelligence Committee to review warrantless surveillance documents “in return for agreeing that telecommunications companies should get immunity from lawsuits.” “There is no excuse for the administration to grant access only to those inclined to agree with it,” the Washington Post writes.

General claims Bush gave

General claims Bush gave 'marching orders' on aggressive interrogation at Guantanamo Nick Juliano
Published: Monday October 22, 2007

New book says US uses 'methods of the most tyrannical regimes'
More than 100,000 pages of newly released government documents to demonstrate how US military interrogators "abused, tortured or killed" scores of prisoners rounded up since Sept. 11, 2001, including some who were not even expected of having terrorist ties, according to a just-published book.

In Administration of Torture, two American Civil Liberties Union attorneys detail the findings of a years-long investigation and court battle with the administration that resulted in the release of massive amounts of data on prisoner treatment and the deaths of US-held prisoners.

"[T]he documents show unambiguously that the administration has adopted some of the methods of the most tyrannical regimes," write Jameel Jaffer and Amrit Singh. "Documents from Guantanamo describe prisoners shackled in excruciating 'stress positions,' held in freezing-cold cells, forcibly stripped, hooded, terrorized with military dogs, and deprived of human contact for months."

Most of the documents on which Administration of Torture is based were obtained as a result of ongoing legal fights over a Freedom of Information Act request filed in October 2003 by the ACLU and other human rights and anti-war groups, the ACLU said in a news release.

The documents show that prisoner abuse like that found at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq was hardly the isolated incident that the Bush administration or US military claimed it was. By the time the prisoner abuse story broke in mid-2004 the Army knew of at least 62 other allegations of abuse at different prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, the authors report.

Orange and San Diego counties call for more evacuations overnigh

Wind-whipped firestorms destroyed more than 700 homes and businesses in Southern California on Monday, the second day of its onslaught, and more than half a million people in San Diego County were told to evacuate their homes.

The gale-force winds turned hillside canyons into giant blowtorches from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border. Although the worst damage was around San Diego and Lake Arrowhead, dangerous fires also threatened Malibu, parts of Orange and Ventura counties, and the Agua Dulce area near Santa Clarita. New evacuations came overnight in Orange and San Diego counties, as the menacing winds refused to abate.

Late Monday night, new blazes threatened homes near Stevenson Ranch and in Soledad Canyon in northern Los Angeles County. The Soledad Canyon fire burned multiple mobile homes and evacuations were underway, fire officials said.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, calling it "a tragic time for California," declared a state of emergency in seven counties and redeployed California National Guard members from the border to support firefighters. President George W. Bush today declared an emergency, which authorizes federal agencies to coordinate relief.

Schwarzenegger stressed how much California officials have learned since the devastating wildfires of October 2003, which raged over much of the same terrain. But as the day wore on, it became clear that any hard-earned knowledge was no match for natural forces overrunning the ability of firefighters to control them.

"The issue this time is not preparedness," said San Diego City Council President Scott Peters. "It's that the event is so overwhelming."

Pat Helsing, 59, evacuated her home in the Scripps Ranch area, much as she had done four years ago.

"It seems scarier this time," she said. "The fire is everywhere in San Diego now. You don't know where you can go to escape it."

By late Monday, Southern California fires had burned 269,000 acres -- about 420 square miles -- and destroyed at least 892 buildings. Remarkably, only one person was known to have died, although it was possible that more fatalities would be discovered. At least 37 people had been injured, including 17 firefighters.

Many schools, including those in Malibu, were closed today.

On Monday, near Malibu, where fire Sunday had burned into the center of town, the focus was in the hills, where firefighters on the ground and in the air were trying to prevent flames from marching across Las Flores Canyon and into Topanga Canyon.

"It's trying to move toward Topanga Canyon, parallel to the coastline," said Manhattan Beach Battalion Chief Frank Chiella, near the Rambla Pacifico area. Firefighters were attempting to stay ahead of the fire and funnel it toward the ocean.

"If you let it get wide, that's a lot more homes it could take out," Chiella said. "We're doing what we can to keep it from getting bigger; we've only lost one home today."

Two fires on opposite sides of Lake Arrowhead had burned about 2,000 acres by Monday evening, destroying 138 buildings and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents from mountain resort communities.

In northern Los Angeles County, the Buckweed fire had swept through 35,000 acres by Monday evening, destroying 20 homes and two bridges, and causing the evacuation of about 15,000 people. It was burning toward Magic Mountain, but was partially contained.

In Orange County, where a suspected arson fire stretched the resources of local crews, residents along Calle Cabrillo in Foothill Ranch were packing cars and preparing to evacuate.

"We've been through this before," Karen Royer said. "I believe in God, and I know everything will be good."

Minutes later, a plume of dark smoke lifted over a ridgeline.

"Can I revise that?" she said. "Now I'm scared."

The Orange County blaze, called the Santiago fire, was leaping relentlessly in a southeasterly direction, burning ominously close to the Foothill Ranch and Portola Hill communities. About 500 firefighters and two water-carrying helicopters stood between the fire and hundreds of homes, Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion said.

Don't hold back, Maron

Just let it all out, big guy..

At least 600 structures destroyed in San Diego fire

SAN DIEGO -- At least 500 homes and 100 businesses have been destroyed in a single San Diego County wildfire, officials announced Monday evening.

The news pushed the total destroyed structures in the Southern California wildfires to more than 760 and the numbers was expected to rise
Officials in San Diego County had ordered evacuations of 250,000 households in the paths of three fires. Schools were closed and hospitals evacuated by bus, and hundreds of people sought refuge in Qualcomm Stadium and other evacuation centers. Fire officials were stretched to their limits trying to cope with the fast-moving, wind-whipped blazes that burned more than 100,000 acres, or about 156 square miles.

Monday evening, northbound traffic on Interstate 5 from Oceanside to San Juan Capistrano was backed up bumper to bumper with cars and trucks loaded with belongings.

With fire approaching, planes from the Miramar Marine Corps air base in San Diego were being sent to other bases. And Marine families at Camp Pendleton were alerted to stand by for possible evacuation.

"This is a major emergency," Ron Roberts, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, told reporters as he outlined the scope of the damage and evacuations.

In other areas of Southern California, more than 237 homes had been destroyed across seven counties by Monday evening. Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate, and 126,000 acres had been consumed.

Monday evening, officials reported 70 homes destroyed in Poway, a city of gated communities and million-dollar homes. Authorities began evacuating two-thirds of the city before sunrise, said Jennifer Lewis, the city's public information officer. About 51,000 people live in the city, and by evening 7,000 homes had been emptied, she said.

In late afternoon, a branch of the so-called Witch fire flared up, barreling through the east side of the city. Residents stood along Espola Road with T-shirts wrapped around their faces, squinting through binoculars and trying to point out houses that were burning.

"It's terrifying," said Donna Cuddy, 45, who was evacuating with her husband, son and two dogs and hoped to find a hotel near downtown San Diego.

The number of people in the city's shelters peaked at about 800 in the early afternoon, though some later moved on. Not a single resident had to be prodded to leave, Lewis said. "People have been great," she said. "They have been through this before, and they take it very seriously."

Emergency officials estimated that more than 250,000 households had been told to evacuate through the "reverse 911" system. At two people per household, that would be nearly 500,000 people, though it was unknown how many had responded to the evacuation call.

The number of evacuations rose steadily throughout the day. Five American Red Cross shelters were jammed, and thousands flocked to Qualcomm Stadium and Del Mar Fairgrounds. Many hotels reported 100% occupancy.

"We have more houses burning than we have people and engine companies to fight them," San Diego Fire Capt. Lisa Blake said. "A lot of people are going to lose their homes today."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger toured some of the damaged areas today and directed the California National Guard to make 1,500 Guardsmen available to be deployed as needed.

Fewer than 100 firefighters were in reserve to protect the 400-square-mile city, said John Langford, a spokesman for San Diego Fire and Rescue. Firefighters targeted the Guejito Fire, which burned into Rancho Bernardo, a neighborhood in northern San Diego.

"We're stretched about as thin as we could possibly be," San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman said. "We've never seen conditions like this," she said of the wind, drought and dryness. "That's why it's the most challenging we've ever seen."

Langford added, "We have all our forces trying to fight this, everything available."

Emergency officials urged residents to limit cell phone calls and to use major highways for emergencies only. But people who heeded warnings to get out of the way of the fires mostly left by car, turning the northbound Interstate 5 into the kind of mess usually associated with weekend revelers heading home.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for Rancho Santa Fe, portions of Leucadia, as well as the Olivenhain Dam area.

Underbrush and fires.

up here before the 1860's tha natives used to burn off the brush every year to prevent fire.

us white boys stopped them from doing that in a lot of ways including genocide.

when all that brush went off it lead to some monster forest fires from that point on.

look up the 'Tillamook Burn'.

brushing the area in San Diego by cut or burn is what's saving a bunch of peoples properties down there.

what people probably don't understand it that this relates to a normal brush fire like a match to a burn barrel.

these are huge fires that heat up the whole area (sq. miles) to oven temperatures

even after soaking yer house for days the winds and heat from the fires dry it out in minutes.

Telecom issue

John Dean has written something on the immunity:

FindLaw columnist and former counsel to the president John Dean argues against Congress's expanding domestic surveillance powers under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). In addition, Dean argues that Congress should not immunize those telecoms that cooperated with Bush Administration requests regarding surveillance and may therefore be subject to federal criminal penalties. More generally, Dean draws upon the work of George Washington law professor Daniel Solove to seek to rebut the argument that those who have nothing to hide are not harmed by government surveillance.

Please post if you hare having any sammycam problems

Hi all,

Please post if you are having any sammycam problems. If you are it would be helpful if you could tell me:

- Little or big windows version of sammycam
- What's your cpu usage while watching?
- What type of connection do you have and who is the provider ie Verizon, comcast etc?

Thanks,

Garet

My bad

It's my fault it was so late :(

Hopefully with the newer version Sam is using we should be able to post up the VoD right after the show.

Garet

Sam interrupting, Maron interrupting destroys the rants

they need to work out a way to interrupt more gracefully.

the com feed delay accentuates the break in continuity.

you observing the 'delay' effects on the show continuity?

Garret

Marc's voice sounds tinny. Is he to close to it? Or is it a bad mic?

rofl

i miss starting the mornings with Marc , he's got me laughing my ass off.

Garetjax,

Marc's audio is distorted some, like overload, or clipping. I think he's too close to the mic.

I've had a lot better experience today than usual. No reloads. Only an occasional glitch.

I've got comcast and am using the small cam. I don't think it's mattered for me which cam version I use.

Sorry to hear about your Aunt's home. Keeping good thoughts about your sister and momo!

Living paycheck to paycheck gets harder

Americans are increasingly unable to stretch their dollars to the next payday as they juggle higher rent, food and energy bills.

NEW YORK – The calculus of living paycheck to paycheck in America is getting harder. What used to last four days might last half that long now. Pay the gas bill, but skip breakfast. Eat less for lunch so the kids can have a healthy dinner.

Across the nation, Americans are increasingly unable to stretch their dollars to the next payday as they juggle higher rent, food and energy bills. It’s starting to affect middle-income working families as well as the poor, and has reached the point of affecting day-to-day calculations of merchants like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., 7-Eleven Inc. and Family Dollar Stores Inc.

Food pantries, which distribute foodstuffs to the needy, are reporting severe shortages and reduced government funding at the very time that they are seeing a surge of new people seeking their help.

Btw, saw this play Friday (opening) night. It was incredible. Personal subject for many of us living in Utah and surrounding areas:

Cancer survivor's 'Exposed' puts a human face on nuke-test tragedy

At first glance, it doesn't sound like the basis for a night at the theater. But Dickson has combined her personal experiences with historical documentation - mostly interviews and public testimony - to create her first full-length play, "Exposed" ...

"Exposed" employs multiple perspectives to examine the human consequences of nuclear-bomb testing. "That's kind of what this play does: It puts a human face on what happened," says Dickson, "It's my way of bearing witness. We were casualties of the Cold War, but nobody acknowledges us. And my story isn't even the most tragic. Because what happened to many other people is so much worse."

Deadly clouds: The Cold War had its ideological roots in Moscow and Washington, D.C., but its Ground Zero, at least from the American perspective, may have been a pockmarked patch of desert, some 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, called the Nevada Test Site. There, between 1951 and 1992, the United States government tested 928 nuclear bombs by detonating them in huge blasts. Until 1962, when the government moved the tests underground, the weapons erupted in towering mushroom clouds, sending radioactive particles into the atmosphere.

Residents of Salt Lake City in the late 1950s and 1960s had no reason to believe the tests could be harmful to them in northern Utah, hundreds of miles away. Dickson knew nothing about the health consequences of radioactive fallout when she learned she had thyroid cancer; it was not until four years later, in 1989, that she began to research the issue.

As she soon discovered, scientists believe some "downwinders" ingested fallout by drinking milk produced by cows grazing on pasture grasses covered with atomic dust.

Poor SJ

Losing homes and family. It must be rough.

When are you heading south to help them?

people on the im

please tell sam to stop interrupting marc before he can tell us his experience in the park!

Thanks for the feedback so far - its very helpful

Delay - yep working on it. Part of the problem is the distance itself - ie east to west coast over the internet but there are things we can do.

Marc's audio - I will have to check with Marc - If he is using his macbook it should be fine unless its set a bit off - he should probably get a decent usb mic.

I am mostly interested in reloads as our backend provider put in a fix to correct them.

Small cam and large cam use the same bandwidth but small cam uses less cpu.

Problems:
1. Is the mike in maron's *mouth*? OMG he's loud, and sam is whispering.
2. Sam's window freezes up, but when I refresh, it's okay.
In answer to your questions I'm using:
1. The Sammycam link - big windows
2. CP what? I have no idea how to tell. I looked through Task Manager and it says 1-3%
3. The connection is through a phone company. DSL I guess you'd call it.

Maron has no idea!!!

Stark Apologizes After Bid To Censure Him Fails
By James Lambert - October 23, 2007, 11:44AM

The House just failed by a 196-173 margin to censure Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA) for his remarks last week that President Bush was sending American troops to Iraq to have their "heads blown off for the president's amusement." The resolution stated that Stark “by his despicable conduct, has dishonored himself and brought discredit to the House and merits the censure of the House for the same.”

Moments after the vote, an emotional Stark apologized for his comments.

"I want to apologize to my colleagues, many of whom I have offended," Stark said. He also apologized to "the president and his family" and "the troops."

"I hope that with this apology, I return to being as insignificant as I should be," he finished in an emotional, breaking voice.

Ron Paul Schools Dems; Stands Up Against Terror Hysteria

Behind the Ron Paul sensation is a desperate desire for someone, anyone, to stand up and call "bullshit" on the "War on Terror" and all that it has entailed, from illegal surveillance of citizens and nightmarish foreign adventures to an executive branch mad with power and drunk on its sense of entitlement.

Last week Paul, whose opposition to much of the 20th century makes him terrible on just about every issue which touches the political economy and whose Birchian isolationism leas him to embrace conspiracy theories about shady cabals of globalists undermining American sovereignty and sapping our precious bodily fluids (not to mention his little white supremacy problem), simply schooled Democrats on how to roll back the disasters of the Bush era introducing the "American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007." ...

"Why wasn't this the first piece of legislation proposed by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid when they assumed control over the House and Senate, respectively?" The answer is fairly obvious: Paul can propose it and it plays to his reputation as the cantankerous oddball of the GOP, but Dems are terrified of being called soft on anything, and they’re right in their belief that if they offered this kind of plain, commonsense measure, it would be twisted into the:

Pro-EU party 'wins Polish election'

Poland's business-friendly and pro-EU Civic Platform party has ousted prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski's conservatives in parliamentary elections, early results said.

It is the strongest showing for any single party since the eastern European country overthrew Communism in 1989.

Voters across the nation of 38 million turned out in record numbers to deal a bruising verdict on Kaczynski's two-year crusade to belatedly purge former Communists and fight for the country's interests in the EU with combative methods that have left the nation marginalised in Europe.

Pentagon chief says US might delay activating missile defense in Europe

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - American Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the U.S. might delay activating its proposed missile defence sites in Europe until it has "definitive proof" of a missile threat from Iran.

Gates made the comments at a news conference today in Prague after a meeting with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.

Gates said this was a proposal to the Russians - who strongly oppose U.S. missile defence in Europe - that has yet to be worked out in detail.

The United States wants to build a missile interceptor base in Poland and a radar site in the Czech Republic, but details have yet to be negotiated.

Gates said the U.S. would consider tying activation of the

Cheney 'interfered directly' to get terror plea bargain

Vice President Dick Cheney cut a deal with the prime minister of Australia to orchestrate a plea bargain with an Australian terror suspect that would keep him out of sight until after Australia's national elections next month, an Australian television station reported.

Cheney "interfered directly" to secure Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks' guilty plea to material support for terrorism, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported Tuesday. Cheney's intervention, according to a Harper's article cited by the ABC, was "part of a deal" with Prime Minister John Howard, who is facing a re-election fight next month.

"We are fine. We actually live in the middle of a pretty large town and it would be very hard for the fires to get to us. The people in danger live in the hills and in canyons where brush grows high and the firefighters cannot get to them in time. However, the smoke is really bad. My daughter has not had school this week because her school is near the Malibu fire. Justin and Brandon are in school, but they do not go outdoors because of the particles in the air. The wind is unbelievable. We have had trees completely uprooted right in our neighborhood. It is crazy. But it seems to be dying down today. That will help the firefighters. We have not had any material rainfall in about six months. And dry brush is a nightmare in wind like this."

Half of US voters say never to Hillary: poll

Half of US voters say never to Hillary: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Hillary Clinton may be the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential front-runner but she also tops the list when voters are asked for whom they would never, ever cast a ballot, a poll out Monday found.

Fully 50 percent of US voters say that when it comes to Clinton, she can campaign all she likes but there is no way in the world she can win their support, with her negative rating up slightly from 46 percent in March, the Zogby poll said.

Older voters were the most hostile to the attorney and former first lady-turned US senator, who is seeking to become the first woman US president. Fifty-nine percent of those over 65 said they would never vote for Clinton, according to the survey which ranked leading Democratic and Republican hopefuls.

Clinton's Democratic rival Barack Obama drew a 37 percent rating of those who would never back him.

On the Republican side, front-runner Rudy Giuliani also drew a great deal of negative responses: 43 percent said they would never vote for him, and 42 percent said Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was their choice for never.

This Internet survey of 9718 people with a one percent margin of error was done October 11-15.
