Hillary Clinton defends Iran vote

By Toby Harnden in Washington

Last Updated: 2:55am BST 22/10/2007

Hillary Clinton, under fire from her Democratic rivals who claim she is a hawk on Iran, has dispatched a message to voters insisting she is "opposed to letting President Bush take any military action" without the approval of Congress.

Just askin'...

Wasn't Cheney overseeing exercises in Phoenix and Portland last week? With the National Guard in Iraq, hasn't a Blackwater camp moved into the San Diego area? And wasn't Blackwater booted out of Iraq recently?

Hillary Clinton is following in her husband's footsteps and turning to ageing British rockers as the solution to the personally and politically sensitive question of how to mark her 60th birthday.

Bill Clinton set the trend last October when he invited the Rolling Stones to headline at his birthday bash in New York's Beacon Theatre. Mrs Clinton has now decided to stick with the Brit baby boomer theme with her own birthday show at the same theatre, though she has chosen a younger man, in the form of Elvis Costello (who is a mere 53).

Technical Question About Sam Seder Show IM

I was trying to set up the IM through AIM and I am not sure I succeeded. During the show I did reach a screen that asked for the IM. Is it like a chat room where everyone sees everyone else's IMs or is Sam the only one who gets to see the IMs? How would I know I've gotten through? Is there some sort of acknowledgement besides Sam commenting on the IM?

Thanks Sam :)

But,why do you have such problems banning Trolls?(The back end on this thing makes banning a rather

imprecise tool......)firedoglake,dailykos,etc..Seem to be able to do it without a huge problem?

fires by the border- Tijuana

U.S. fires cloak Mexico border cities in ash
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 10/22/2007 - 6:58pm.

TIJUANA, Mexico (Reuters) - Raging wildfires in Southern California cloaked neighboring Mexican cities in a fog of suffocating ash on Monday, shutting schools and businesses and a major U.S.-Mexico border crossing.

The normally bustling city of Tijuana, just 20 miles (32 km) from San Diego County, where seven fires burned, virtually closed down as residents stayed indoors and those who ventured out walked around with paper masks over their mouths.

A thin gray ash covered houses and cars and blotted out the sun in the Pacific port of Rosarito and the city of Tecate, where U.S. and Mexican officials closed the busy border crossing.

"You can feel the heat of the fires from here. There's ash everywhere, it is falling like rain," said 33-year-old secretary Lorena Morales, who ran out to the pharmacy to seek anti-allergy medicines for her children.

The world's busiest land border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego remained open but many motorists sat uncomfortably for hours in the heat with their windows up and without air-conditioning to prevent ash coming in, witnesses said.

Southern California is in the midst of its driest year on record after rainfall just a fifth of average levels.

Authorities ordered at least 250,000 people to flee their homes on Monday because of the wildfires, which destroyed hundreds of buildings.

I'm really sorry,I wasn't much help ! :(

Trolls

I like to call 'em 'snoids'. Snoids were these little pathetic creatures in R Crumb comics that lived in persons assholes. They had no life of their own, and just liked to bother people - get into their thoughts and fuck with them.
The best treatment of the snoids is not to feed them. Ignore them, and they will eventually masturbate themselves into a drooling, flacid, semi-comatose state.

Who is Wrong, CNN or Wayne Madsen at Global Research?

When I read CNN’s latest story on the so-called “mistaken flight of nuclear warheads across the country”, I was shocked! Who is telling the truth? Is CNN publishing propaganda meant to calm international worries that Bush and Cheney are readying the military to attack Iran with nuclear weapons designed to penetrate targets deep underground, or has Global Research and Wayne Madsen published a story that is false? How are we, the American public, and people throughout the world, able to discern who is telling the truth?

The B-52 Incident

eya Jim,

seems the nail polish worked, eh. nice model plane.

On the Eve of Destruction

by Scott Ritter

Don't worry, the White House is telling us. The world's most powerful leader was simply making a rhetorical point. At a White House press conference last week, just in case you haven't heard, President Bush informed the American people that he had told world leaders "if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing [Iran] from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon." World War III. That is certainly some rhetorical point, especially coming from the man singularly most capable of making such an event reality.

Pundits have raised their eyebrows and comics are busy writing jokes, but the president's reference to Armageddon, no matter how cavalierly uttered and subsequently brushed away, suggests an alarming context. Some might note that the comment was simply an offhand response to a reporter's question, the kind of free-thinking scenario that baffles Bush so. In a way, this makes what the president said even more disturbing, since we now have an insight into the vision, and related terminology, which hovers just below the horizon in the brain of George W. Bush.
...

Banning

One vote for no to banning (unless the Freepers try to flood the site). These mouth-breathing, knuckle draggers (borrowed from Janeane) are too entertaining in their ignorance. If nothing else, they give regular example of the sickness of the Neocon,Straussian, death cult's base.

When I read CNN’s latest story on the so-called “mistaken flight of nuclear warheads across the country”, I was shocked! Who is telling the truth?

Taking nuclear weapons off the shelf isn't like taking a case of sodas when no one is looking. And CNN is no longer using "your trusted source" for news any longer. That was sooo yesterday.

The truth

>>How are we, the American public, and people throughout the world, able to discern who is telling the truth?<<

I trust the people who have been proven to be telling us the truth. That certainly DOES NOT include CNN. They have been carrying water for the administration since day one. They regularly tilt a story to the benefit of those in power. Yes, they are better than Faux News, but only by degrees. Instead of the bold face falsehoods, they lie by omission, by their choice of 'experts', and by emphasizing certain language. Their lying is only somewhat more sophisticated.

It isn't the insults or who is insulted or the foul language that I find depressing and sigh producing and boring.

It is that anyone would bother to strive to be a consummately annoying and disruptive asshole on this or any blog. What's the point?

I have no problem with differing opinions. I don't mind being told that it is people like me who screw up America or the planet, provided that it is an honest opinion and is accompanied with some sort of reasoning to back it up.

I think that Gare missed the boat by having created his obnoxious blog persona to present his opinions, but at least he makes an attempt at something more inventive than "I fucked your mother today." And occasionally Gare actually explains his viewpoint, though it's rare.

There are others who have absolutely no intent to contribute anything other than obnoxious abuse in print...presumably so that they can read their own handiwork on the World Wide Web.

Do they really think that writing "Crank Bait is never funny" or "Chubby is a danger to society" will crush us? Certainly not. They just want to put it out there.

I assume that they are kids or that they are emotionally kids. Apparently they believe that they can write something more shocking than has ever been written before? Or that being banned from a number of websites is a badge of honor?

What a waste of grey matter.

Militarizing Anthropology
By Dina Rabie, Tamer El-Maghraby, IOL Staff

Anthropologists are already embedded with six US military teams in Iraq and Afghanistan.

CAIRO ? A US military program recruiting anthropologists to be embedded with units in Iraq and Afghanistan is meeting stiff opposition from anthropologists as an attempt to militarize the discipline and weaponize scientists in the service of Washington's so-called war on terror.

"We are deeply concerned that the 'war on terror' threatens to militarize anthropology in a way that undermines the integrity of the discipline and returns anthropology to its sad roots as a tool of colonial occupation, oppression, and violence," Roberto J. Gonzalez, an anthropology professor at San Jose State University and a campaigner, told IslamOnline.net in an email interview.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is recruiting anthropologists under the Human Terrain System (HTS) program to study social groups in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The program first started on a small scale in 2006 and now has six teams, each including at least one anthropologist, embedded in combat brigade units in both Muslim countries.

Each team member, who wears the uniform and receives mandatory weapons training, costs the Pentagon $400,000 a year, including the cost of kidnapping insurance.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has allocated $40 million dollars to expand the program, challenged by veteran anthropologists, to increase the number of teams to 28.

FWIW

anonymous is a nic just like crank bait is a nic.

No, it's not. As marginal as accountability gets around here, at least there's a smallish amount of accountability that goes along with a regular nic.

The posters here who can be bothered with identifying themselves with a nic are separate entities from the others. We are accountable for what we've said, because it's attached to our name. We have a history, built upon what we, as identifiable creatures, have said.

With "Anonymous" -- just who are you? What did you say previously? You are certainly NOT the only Anonymous who posts here, which, basically, renders you, as Anonymous, a transitory figment, based on nothing. You certainly can't be accountable for all that "Anonymous" posts. In fact, since there can be several Anonymous posting at the same time, how on earth would anyone be certain of just who they are posting or replying to? Maybe a better question is why on earth would anyone bother to reply to a lazy Anonymous?

For all it's worth, you're a dime a dozen, an ephemeral figure unaccountable for your words, in any of the ways we've established in this cyber-cafe.

This attempt at trying to validate an Anonymous posture is seen through by everyone. You just don't want to have to be responsible for your words.

Thanks to who ever posted the 60 minutes audio from last night

Not true. There are several (and potentially infinite numbers) of the former while there is only one of the latter.

It is possible to build a catalog of my writings and opinions, which you have obviously done, because they have a definite author. At best, I must guess when an Anonymous author is the same Anonymous author who wrote something prior under Anonymous.

A unique name enables readers to continuously paint a more precise picture of the thought processes and experiences of the author.

Obviously you don't find that pertinent except as the advantage it gives you over others. It is an advantage you use nefariously. Frankly, you need every advantage you can get.

Hi Alice,
I just read somewhere (was it here?) that our thoughts can change our chemistry, and so we have to be very careful about what we experience. I can't imagine what kind of control you'd have to separate your experiences enough to not let it get to you.

OMG Alice...

I did not see that...I just looked it up.

It sounds like they've found a potentially strong weapon to fight malnutrition.

Might I add, raising my children and seeing them side by side with my husband's nieces and nephews, the stark contrast in skin tone and build was always a constant reminder to me that malnutrition is right here where we live. He's got a sister with alcohol issues, who, if I'm not mistaken, raised her children on ketchup and french fries and little else. It affects everything from IQ to height. It's sad, really.

I have given this some thought recently. You might recall that I have always been in Sam's camp regarding censorship and anonymous postings...within limits not far flung from Sam's stated limits.

I have stopped myself from writing about anonymous posts many times recently. I stopped myself because I no longer choose to defend anonymity but I don't want to condemn it either.

You stated it nicely, so I'll use your words:

"...someone who enjoys SEDER's show and wants to drop off an opinion or a suggestion shouldn't need to register and wait for an email. Anonymity should encourage more participation."

I hate registration. It dissuades me from commenting on other sites. On the other hand, I would never use an Anonymous signature for the purpose of being an obnoxious annoyance.

So I find myself in a Solomon-like quandary of supporting no-registration comments but wanting to hand half-a-baby back to an Anonymous asshole.

Sex, Drugs and Bombs: Confessions Of A Librarian

Here's a new contender for my favorite headline ever: "Sex, Drugs and Bombs: Confessions Of A Librarian": Places where children are kept calm in storytelling corner, dads can escape the chaos of home to do the Sunday crossword and students can find the silence they need to get on with their studies. Certainly not places where drug dealers hide their stashes and flashers lurk in waiting for their unsuspecting victims. But that's exactly the kind of thing Don Borchert has experienced in his 10 years as a librarian in California.

and tha's really sad because i believe everyone should be able to make a comment and be heard (or read).

Graffiti's graffiti, and there's a time and place for it. You hit and run. Graffiti engages on a different level than conversation. All anonymous posts can really only be taken as graffiti. How on earth do you know if the next Anonymous who replies to you is in fact the one you posted to? You don't. They are the bog graffiti

A conversation, even between strangers, relies on the fact that you are indeed speaking to the same person you were speaking to a moment ago, and can reasonable assume you will be speaking to again in the future. You know this because they have a name and a history of posts.

What makes us each a separate person, an actual person? Our history. We didn't just come welling up from the void anew each and every second. We are a continuum.

It's baffling why this particular Anonymous wishes to announce the number of posters every few minutes (assuming it's the same Anonymous - which you can't). What it's reporting does in fact bolster my argument that there are too many anonymous posters to be able to make them be responsible for their words.

It's also pointless to pick out that bit of information... why not post something else that's obvious - like the time?

Air America gone from Austin airwaves

By W. Gardner Selby | Monday, October 22, 2007, 11:16 AM

Air America, the home for defiantly liberal talk radio, has quit Austin’s air waves, though it can still be heard online or on XM Satellite Radio. Its previous broadcasting home in Austin, KOKE 1600 AM, has started following a Spanish-language format.

Dave Kaufman, Air America’s vice president of affiliate relations, said Monday the shift happened last week as part of an expected change in station ownership. “Definitely disappointed,” Kaufman reacted. “Whenever we lose any affiliate, it’s disappointing. This was an affiliate better than many, not as good as others. And in a state capital, it’s tough” to take the loss.

A dismayed blogger dug up Arbitron ratings suggesting low listener-ship on the Austin outlet: “Can’t even pull 1 percent in Austin, TX? Amazing but true. don’t ask me why. This is a city that is overwhelmingly Democratic, but the right-wing talk radio stations in town consistently get much better ratings.”

Kaufman played down the ratings, though, saying: “Many stations have better ratings, many have lesser ratings.”

Air America seeks another over-the-air home in Central Texas, but nothing is imminent, Kaufman said. He’d welcome local tips at his e-mail, dkaufman@airamerica.com . “If someone can point me to the direction of someone more amenable to picking up our format, I’ll take all the help I can get,” Kaufman said.

The new station owners are switching to a Spanish-langauge format for one reason: it’s more profitable than a Liberal talk radio format.

Even in the Liberal oasis that is Austin —- and despite the fact that our AM stations are already dominated by Spanish-langauge stations —- I think this says more about Air America’s ability to compete in the market place of ideas than it does the new owner’s “desire” to change their format.

Not a suprise. First of all, KOKE was a J-O-K-E. You could not hear the station very well even in the day time. Once the sun went down, forget about it. Also, Air America has struggled across the board. Once Franken left, it was all over. Bad talent. If your number one draw is Randi Rhodes, you are done. She is terrible. Worse than Savage, Limbaugh, and Hannity. she sounds like nails on a chalk board…

Tell the Senate: Stop Bush's Wiretapping Program !

Take Action !

Democrats in the Senate appear to have caved again to the Bush administration's fearmongering tactics. This time, they've negotiated a 'compromise' fix to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) sought by Bush that grants full amnesty to the telecom giants for participation in his illegal program to spy on Americans.

But why amnesty? Bush wants retroactive immunity for the telecom companies to thwart civil liberties lawsuits that threaten to expose his own lawbreaking. If these lawsuits aren't allowed to go forward, we may never know the extent of the Bush administration's illegal efforts to spy on American citizens without the required warrants.

aren't there thoughts in it?

Chemicals. Our feelings, emotions, thoughts, reactions... all chemistry. Even love - chemistry, pure and simple. Waves of chemical, electrical impulses, synapses...

How can a thought be a material thing? it can only be material - a real, physical thing - through electricity and chemicals.

Hey Toni ...

Thanks for the heads up earlier thread. Have you all heard from MRR yet?? The Witch Creek fire was literally .. if I can go by the map at signonsandiego, com mere blocks from where Nik's folks live. I still haven't heard from him... but it isn't exactly like he probably isn't terribly busy dealing with live and death stuff!

Bill Maher & that god darn show

I have to agree with Bill himself as to people came here to see the & hear debate with the guests & himself...

I did get a little frightened when he gave permission to rough up a member of the audience.

kinda ruins the whole falling in love thing when you learn that it's all chemicals and electrical impulses. Unless you're a science nerd like I aspire to be. Then it's all great - God = Math, God's voice = music.

Now I don't believe in God, but I do believe in Science and Math and Music, although I love Einstein's quote: "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.

"I did get a little frightened when he gave permission to rough"

I think that was his sarcasm...I am surprised he didn't make a `don't taz me, bro' comment.

at any rate, it came off badly.

and frankly, the 911'ers didn't do their cause any favors by acting like `tin-foil-hat'-types.

smcgee43 - weather's beautiful here today. Trees brilliant oranges, reds, golds, and butter yellows because of the short days and crisp weather, and you can see a half moon make it's way across the sky during the daytime. pretty cool stuff. Makes me sad I have no windows in my office.

Thanks for asking. How often do you get here? What part of the world are you in?

So all

you need is a computer? You have internet access? You are already half way there.

"or I can look em up and call them"

I believe it is something written into the `log-in' code.

their system is probably a tad more sophisticated than your's...

the downtown branch has roughly 150 to 200 machines networked for internet/word/access. then there are probably another 100 or so for catalog searches.

then there are likely 2 dozen neighborhood branches, each w/ at least a dozen machines?

A rare first edition of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest has been handed in to a charity shop. The book, which dates back to 1898, was discovered at the branch of Oxfam in Nantwich, South Cheshire - appropriately inside a handbag.

Nik is scary close to the Witch Creek fire just east of 15 and South Rancho Bernardo ... the maps on the Union Trib site have the area just North of his closet intersection in Red .. but I don't know if that means the fire is there .. was there .. close to there but not there .. I just don't know. I keep trying to call his cell .. but I get a really fast busy signal instead of a connection. I figure it is due to the heavy traffic with the fire services and all .. messing with the cell towers.

Week 7: Introductions to the EZLN and change in Chiapas

Through these areas of focus, she has spent a large amount of time studying and work with the Zapatista Army of National Liberation or Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) movement in the state of Chiapas.

Ms. Fracchia gave us an in depth background on the motives behind the EZLN uprising, their goals, and the structure of their governance. The crucial motive behind the revolution was the distribution of land, and how the indigenous of Chiapas had been so severely marginalized and ignored. One of the points I found particularly interesting was that when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed, land redistribution was effectively cancelled, thus leaving most of the indigenous of Chiapas without any chance of reclaiming their ancestral lands. The EZLN uprising was a response to not only this policy change but to the continued marginalization that they face. Currently their goals are to re-claim and expand their territory of ancestral lands and to maintain their autonomy as a government separate of the Mexican government. The Zapatista government also has established itself as an autonomous entity that governs itself in a true democratic fashion.

I think he's right.

But this is what you get

The older dictators fell because they could never supply their subjects with enough bread, enough circuses, enough miracles, and mysteries.
Under a scientific dictatorship, education will really work' with the result that most men and women will grow up to love their servitude and will never dream of revolution. There seems to be no good reason why a thoroughly scientific dictatorship should ever be overthrown.

I've been helping keep tabs on the fires all day at kos. The site is down for maintenance for a bit, but when it comes back up, there are several diaries up, with info on all the fires and conditions being updated regularly. Cell service is down for a lot of folks, and traffic is shitty for those trying to evac. Witch Creek is over 100,000 acres, last time I checked, and had consumed upwards of 500 homes. KNX 1070 is carrying live coverage, and their info has been good so far. As soon as the site's back up, I'll post more.
