Late Edition: Hoekstra and
Late Edition: Hoekstra and Harman Denounce Bush Administration for Leaks of Israeli Bombing of Syria
By: Nicole Belle @ 6:30 PM - PDT

Wolf Blitzer had on Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI02), Ranking Member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA36), of the House Committee on Homeland Security, to discuss the troubling and selective leaking of classified information coming from the White House about Israel’s bomb attack in Northern Syria of alleged nuclear facilities, prompting Hoekstra and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (also a Republican) of a scathing rebuke in the Wall Street Journal (subscription req’d.)
You know when a Republican like Hoekstra is blasting you for leaking information that all is not well in the Republican party…but how pathetic is it that Harman only knew about it from what she read in the media?
Blitzer: Can you tell us, Congressman Hoekstra, if there was evidence that the Syrians were working with North Korea and/or Iran, were actually in the process at that facility of trying to build a nuclear bomb?
Hoekstra: Wolf, I can’t get into any of the details that we’ve been briefed in on. You know, that’s why this spot declassification that the administration is going through is so troublesome. They can leak bits and pieces of the program. Those of us who have been briefed on the program, we can’t say anything about what we know or when we knew it.
Rats are jumping, Mr. Cheney…

Valerie Plame On 60 Minutes:
Valerie Plame On 60 Minutes: “The President Is Not A Man Of His Word”
By: Logan Murphy @ 7:17 PM - PDT
Outed CIA covert operative Valerie Plame Wilson and her husband, Joe Wilson, gave an interview to Katie Couric on 60 Minutes. In the first segment, Plame Wilson spoke frankly about being betrayed by this administration, as well as her assessment of the damage done to the nation’s security by revealing her identity:
Part One: Download (156) | Play (149) Download (182) | Play (72) (thanks to BillW for videos)
But the second segment is where Couric goes off the rails and shows her flair for White House talking points. It’s almost as if she implies that Plame Wilson should have expected the White House to out her because the work she did touched on the question that sent her husband, Amb. Joseph Wilson, to Niger.
COURIC: You never for a moment thought this could potentially jeopardize my career?
PLAME: It’s called ‘living your cover.’ This had nothing to do with what I was doing. He was part of the debate.
COURIC: But admit it, it comes awfully close to what you were doing, even covertly. I mean, you were trying to ascertain if Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He’s writing an article saying ‘it’s really not valid, this one assertion.’ I mean, can’t you see how those two things might collide and in a very dangerous way?
Part Two: Download (106) | Play (64) Download (31) | Play (53)
Couric should be embarassed for her arsenal of GOP talking points disguised as an interview. Seriously, this is a covert agent telling you that national security was compromised and you think this is the kind of question that needed to be asked?
Can you understand how people just were turned off by that whole thing? They felt “Gee, maybe she’s enjoying her celebrity a little too much.”
She even at one point accused Valerie of being very partisan and Joseph Wilson of still seething… can you believe that hackery? Did it ever cross her mind to ask that of President Bush in her softball interview from Iraq? Of course not.
To the end, the Wilsons held strong to the truth and never backed down, even when the CIA made it difficult for her to publish her own book on the events, Fair Game, eventually redacting 10% of it.
Couric: “Do you think President Bush was in on this?”
Plame: “I don’t know about that, but I, like most other Americans saw President Bush say on TV that he would fire anyone from his administration found to be involved in the leak of my name. It turns out, the president is not a man of his word.”

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."
on Katie Couric
I think in asking these questions in this manner, Katie is trying to give Wilson and Plame the chance to answer the rightwing attack machine. I don't see Katie as the problem. I see her as presenting the far-rightwinger's case in a way that allows Joe and Valerie to answer it. Katie and CBS must believe that a good deal of the viewers of 60 Minutes listen to rightwing radio all day during the week - and that's probably true. So a lot of their audience probably has these questions about this couple's intentions. It's good they got a chance to answer these kinds of questions, really. It'd be bad if they weren't given a chance to answer them.

With Democrats Like These ...
Editorial
Published: October 20, 2007
Every now and then, we are tempted to double-check that the Democrats actually won control of Congress last year. It was particularly hard to tell this week. Democratic leaders were cowed, once again, by propaganda from the White House and failed, once again, to modernize the law on electronic spying in a way that permits robust intelligence gathering on terrorists without undermining the Constitution.
The task before Congress was to review and improve an update to the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, that was pushed through the Capitol just before the summer break. That bill endorsed warrantless wiretapping and gutted other aspects of the 1978 law.
House Democrats drafted a measure that, while imperfect, was an improvement to the one passed this summer. But before the House could vote, Republicans tied up the measure in bureaucratic knots and Democratic leaders pulled it. Senate Democrats did even worse, accepting a Potemkin compromise that endorsed far too much of the bad summer law.

on govt. spying on citizens
It's still part of your standard psych test. "Do you ever get the feeling the government is watching you?" And it means something if you do. Like, it's a sign that you think you're so important that the govt. would be watching you. You've got an inflated ego or something.
But in this day and age, isn't it kind of, I dunno, irresponsible or something to assume that the government isn't spying on you?
Maybe the people who believe the govt. isn't spying on them - maybe THEY have an out of whack ego. Maybe they need help!

My repub. conserv. sis told me today that one of the routine vaccinations was made from aborted babies. Dammit, which one was it? Why does it matter what they made the vaccine from, if it keeps children from getting sick, is what I want to know... same with stem cell research.
But don't get me wrong. I love kids. Kids are, to me, what cats are to Alice. "Some people have asked if some vaccines have components derived from human fetuses.
"In fact, some vaccines are grown in cell cultures that were originally obtained from two human fetuses. In addition, the rubella virus used to make rubella vaccine was isolated from a third human fetus. This article describes the origins of these vaccines."

"Summary: Some vaccine components have been derived from human fetuses. The abortions were not conducted for the purpose of vaccine discovery or vaccine production. RAID 6?
Double-parity RAID, commonly known as RAID 6, safeguards against data loss by allowing up to two consecutive drive failures
What is RAID 6?
RAID 6 eliminates the risk of data loss if a second hard disk drive fails or an unrecoverable read error occurs while the RAID array is rebuilding. In a RAID 6 enabled system, a second set of parity is calculated, written, and distributed across all the drives. RAID 6 is obviously more secure than RAID 5, but do you pay a performance penalty for this added security?
RAID 5 vs. RAID 6 Performance
Because RAID 6 requires a second set of parity calculations, this additional step slows the write performance. Performance benchmarks show that a typical RAID controllers can suffer more than a 30% drop in overall write performance in RAID 6 when compared to a RAID 5. However, RAID 5 and RAID 6 read performance remain unaffected. AMCC/3Ware has implemented sophisticated advanced stripe handling technology that maximize RAID 6 performance by dramatically minimizing the write performance penalty. Simultaneous parity calculations and dedicated silicon-based stripe handlers radically reduce the write penalty on 3ware controllers to less than 10% between RAID 6 and RAID 5.
Summary
RAID 6 represents an incredible change in the RAID landscape. It provides customers with higher levels of data protection, data availability and fault tolerance than RAID 5. By assuring data availability following a second drive failure, users can rest assured that they are enjoying maximum data protection, both in normal and degraded modes. And, with RAID 6 enabled AMCC/3ware controllers, RAID 6 will not cripple performance. However, it is important to remember that RAID 6 does not come without costs. RAID 6 requires the equivalent capacity of two drives in the array to be dedicated to storing only parity information. Also, most RAID 6 systems carry a write performance penalty due to the additional parity calculation. AMCC/3Ware simultaneous parity calculations mitigate these performance impediments to provide the fastest RAID 6 solution available.

Don't that just go to show ya?
any of the raid's
that write to two or more drives in a typical comp are somewhat slower due to the write time to each drive. the AMCC/3Ware card seems to mitigate that speed slowdown.

SAS raiders enter Iran to kill gunrunners
BRITISH special forces have crossed into Iran several times in recent months as part of a secret border war against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Al-Quds special forces, defence sources have disclosed.
There have been at least half a dozen intense firefights between the SAS and arms smugglers, a mixture of Iranians and Shi’ite militiamen.
There have been persistent reports of American special-operations missions inside Iran preparing for a possible attack. But the sources said British troops were solely stopping arms smuggling.

Why They’re Afraid of Michael Moore
by John Pilger
...
Moore’s “threat” is his unerring view from the ground. He abrogates the contempt in which elite America and the media hold ordinary people. This is a taboo subject among many journalists, especially those claiming to have risen to the nirvana of “impartiality” and others who profess to teach journalism. If Moore simply presented victims in the time-honored, ambulance-chasing way, leaving the audience tearful but paralyzed, he would have few enemies. He would not be looked down upon as a polemicist and self-promoter and all the other pejorative tags that await those who step beyond the invisible boundaries in societies where wealth is said to equal freedom. The few who dig deep into the nature of a liberal ideology that regards itself as superior, yet is responsible for crimes epic in proportion and generally unrecognized, risk being eased out of the “mainstream”, especially if they are young — a process that a former editor once described to me as “a sort of gentle defenestration”.

Fall Foliage
Why Leaves Change Color
For years, scientists have studied how leaves prepare for the annual show of fall color. The molecules behind bright yellows and oranges are well understood, but brilliant reds remain a bit of a mystery.
In response to chilly temperatures and fewer daylight hours, leaves stop producing their green-tinted chlorophyll, which allows them to capture sunlight and make energy. Because chlorophyll is sensitive to the cold, certain weather conditions like early frosts will turn off production more quickly.
"If making the anthocyanins helps the leaf stay on the tree a little longer, it may help the tree absorb some of the good things before it falls off. The tree can use those resources for the next growing season." - Paul Schaberg, U.S. Forest Service plant physiologist

The Fish That Can Survive For Months In A Tree
It's one of the golden rules of the natural world. Birds live in trees, fish live in water. The trouble is, no one bothered to tell the mangrove killifish.
Scientists have discovered that it spends several months of every year out of the water and living inside trees.

Researchers Studying How Singing Bats Communicate
Bats are the most vocal mammals other than humans, and understanding how they communicate during their nocturnal outings could lead to better treatments for human speech disorders...
Thousands of bats native to Central Texas fly overhead each night singing songs of complex syllables - but at frequencies too high for humans to hear.

Friend
Art thou abroad on this stormy night
on thy journey of love, my friend?
The sky groans like one in despair.
I have no sleep tonight.
Ever and again I open my door and look out on
the darkness, my friend!
I can see nothing before me.
I wonder where lies thy path!
By what dim shore of the ink-black river,
by what far edge of the frowning forest,
through what mazy depth of gloom art thou threading
thy course to come to me, my friend?

Libraries Shun Deals to Place Books on Web
Several major research libraries have rebuffed offers from Google and Microsoft to scan their books into computer databases, saying they are put off by restrictions these companies want to place on the new digital collections.
The research libraries, including a large consortium in the Boston area, are instead signing on with the Open Content Alliance, a nonprofit effort aimed at making their materials broadly available.

Halliburton's move out of US
Halliburton's move out of US paying rewards already
by Chris in Paris · 10/22/2007 03:38:00 AM ET
Now remember, as a US citizen this is completely illegal and not allowed though for businesses, it's perfectly OK to pack your bags and stop paying US taxes. US citizens are required to file US taxes regardless of where they reside and even if you rescind your US citizenship, you are required by law to continue filing (and possibly paying) for 10 years.
Why corporate America is allowed to operate with such different terms speaks volumes. Halliburton must be so happy to have saved $133 million in taxes. Why does Halliburton, who has profited so handsomely courtesy of the US government, hate America?

What a sigh of relief. Poland had been going down a very confrontational and extreme right wing path with the Kaczynski twins. The Polish voters turned out in high numbers (for Poland, or America) yesterday to vote in Donald Tusk with a 9 point advantage. Tusk is already calling for Polish troop removal from Iraq and is seeking a balanced relationship with Washington. George isn't going to like hearing that his junior lapdog in Europe has lost.

Riverbend's new post...
Bloggers Without Borders...
Syria is a beautiful country- at least I think it is. I say “I think” because while I perceive it to be beautiful, I sometimes wonder if I mistake safety, security and normalcy for ‘beauty’. In so many ways, Damascus is like Baghdad before the war- bustling streets, occasional traffic jams, markets seemingly always full of shoppers… And in so many ways it’s different. The buildings are higher, the streets are generally narrower and there’s a mountain, Qasiyoun, that looms in the distance.
The mountain distracts me, as it does many Iraqis- especially those from Baghdad. Northern Iraq is full of mountains, but the rest of Iraq is quite flat. At night, Qasiyoun blends into the black sky and the only indication of its presence is a multitude of little, glimmering spots of light- houses and restaurants built right up there on the mountain. Every time I take a picture, I try to work Qasiyoun into it- I try to position the person so that Qasiyoun is in the background.
The first weeks here were something of a cultural shock. It has taken me these last three months to work away certain habits I’d acquired in Iraq after the war. It’s funny how you learn to act a certain way and don’t even know you’re doing strange things- like avoiding people’s eyes in the street or crazily murmuring prayers to yourself when stuck in traffic. It took me at least three weeks to teach myself to walk properly again- with head lifted, not constantly looking behind me.
It is estimated that there are at least 1.5 million Iraqis in Syria today. I believe it. Walking down the streets of Damascus, you can hear the Iraqi accent everywhere. There are areas like Geramana and Qudsiya that are packed full of Iraqi refugees. Syrians are few and far between in these areas. Even the public schools in the areas are full of Iraqi children. A cousin of mine is now attending a school in Qudsiya and his class is composed of 26 Iraqi children, and 5 Syrian children. It’s beyond belief sometimes. Most of the families have nothing to live on beyond their savings which are quickly being depleted with rent and the costs of living.
Within a month of our being here, we began hearing talk about Syria requiring visas from Iraqis, like most other countries. Apparently, our esteemed puppets in power met with Syrian and Jordanian authorities and decided they wanted to take away the last two safe havens remaining for Iraqis- Damascus and Amman. The talk began in late August and was only talk until recently- early October. Iraqis entering Syria now need a visa from the Syrian consulate or embassy in the country they are currently in. In the case of Iraqis still in Iraq, it is said that an approval from the Ministry of Interior is also required (which kind of makes it difficult for people running away from militias OF the Ministry of Interior…). Today, there’s talk of a possible fifty dollar visa at the border.
Iraqis who entered Syria before the visa was implemented were getting a one month visitation visa at the border. As soon as that month was over, you could take your passport and visit the local immigration bureau. If you were lucky, they would give you an additional month or two. When talk about visas from the Syrian embassy began, they stopped giving an extension on the initial border visa. We, as a family, had a brilliant idea. Before the commotion of visas began, and before we started needing a renewal, we decided to go to one of the border crossings, cross into Iraq, and come back into Syria- everyone was doing it. It would buy us some time- at least 2 months.
We chose a hot day in early September and drove the six hours to Kameshli, a border town in northern Syria. My aunt and her son came with us- they also needed an extension on their visa. There is a border crossing in Kameshli called Yaarubiya. It’s one of the simpler crossings because the Iraqi and Syrian borders are only a matter of several meters. You walk out of Syrian territory and then walk into Iraqi territory- simple and safe.
When we got to the Yaarubiya border patrol, it hit us that thousands of Iraqis had had our brilliant idea simultaneously- the lines to the border patrol office were endless. Hundreds of Iraqis stood in a long line waiting to have their passports stamped with an exit visa. We joined the line of people and waited. And waited. And waited…

Another Iraq Vet Steps Up To Challenge GOP Rep. Roskam
By James Lambert - October 19, 2007, 10:24AM
Roll Call reports that Democrats are lining up another Iraq veteran to challenge freshman Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) — Colonel Jill Morgenthaler, a deputy chief of staff for public safety to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Morgenthaler has yet to make her candidacy official, but reports say that she will likely make the bid.
Democrats hope that they can put Roskam on the defensive in this Democratic-trending district, but it remains to be seen whether Morgenthaler has the right profile to inspire local activists. She was at the center of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal as an army spokeswoman, and a Web journal that she had during her time in Iraq features a good deal of criticism of the media for what she perceived as negative coverage of the war.
One such nugget from her journal: "As people get upset about Abu Ghraib, one thing that should never be forgotten: these are men who have murdered Americans and would continue to murder Americans if given the opportunity."

Robert Kennedy speaks out against Retroactive Immunity
The very idea of "retroactive immunity" for lawbreaking corporations is so radical, so repugnant to the most basic principles of the "rule of law," that only one prior attempt can be found in recent history (at least from my research): the efforts by some in Congress in 1965 to enact a law retroactively legalizing the mergers by six large banks which clearly -- as a federal court found -- were illegal under our nation's antitrust laws.

Bear Stearns, Citic to form partnership By STEPHEN BERNARD, AP Business Writer
2 hours, 6 minutes ago
NEW YORK - Investment bank Bear Stearns Cos. and Chinese bank Citic Securities Co. said Monday they will form a strategic partnership that includes $1 billion in cross-investments and the creation of a new Asian joint venture.
Citic, which is owned by the investment arm of the Chinese government, will invest in Bear Stearns through 40-year convertible trust preferred securities that will convert to about 6 percent of Bear Stearns' outstanding shares. Citic could potentially increase the stake to 9.9 percent.
Bear Stearns will acquire a similar stake in Citic through a six-year convertible debt security. Bear Stearns will also have options to acquire additional shares.
The announcement of the deal was fairly swift, as Vice Chairman Jiang Dingzhi of the China Banking Regulatory Commission said last Tuesday at a Communist Party meeting that Citic was interested in investing in Bear Stearns.
Aside from the cross-investment, the pair will form a new joint venture based in Hong Kong that will offer capital markets services across all of Asia. Bear Stearns will contribute its current Asian operations in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore to the new joint venture. Citic will contribute its operations in Hong Kong and pay Bear Stearns a financial consideration for the new 50-50 joint venture.

Conservatives boo the American public. During a GOP presidential debate last night, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) said, “I think the American people — if we as a party realize this and understand it — seventy-some percent of the people in America want the war over with. They’re sick and tired of it. And they want our troops to come home.” Paul was immediately drowned out by a chorus of boos from the audience. Watch it:

How did Blackwater end up guarding U.S. diplomats in Iraq? The answer's becoming clearer.
The Washington Post reported yesterday that the State Department, under the gun to create an embassy security staff after the Coalition Provisional Authority disbanded in June 2004, decided to stick with the CPA's Blackwater bodyguards, awarding the firm a no-bid contract. That much State Department logistics official William H. Moser told Congress earlier this month. But the Post supplies a wealth of detail about just how dependent State is on security contractors for conducting diplomacy in war zones.

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Rob Reiner sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday, Mrs. President" in honor of Senator Hillary Clinton at his Brentwood, California, home on Sunday evening.
Celebrities came to see to see Clinton, D-N.Y., and to celebrate in advance of the former first layd's 60th birthday. Although they didn't bring gifts, celebrities from Jamie Lee Curtis, Magic Johnson, Ted Danson, Bridget Moynihan and Chelsea Handler raised a half a million dollars for the Clinton campaign and enjoyed cocktails and hors deouvres in return.
Despite the massive fires miles away in Malibu, guests were greeted by men dressed in head to toe white, with lavender bow ties saying with "Welcome to the Reiner's," as they shuffled up and down the street parking Bentleys, Porsches, and BMWs.
In a town where loyalty is split between Clinton and rival Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., the famous actor turned director Reiner made the push for his candidate in this Hollywood crowd.
"This is a tough time right now and we need the best woman qualified," Reiner said.
Clinton thanked Steve Bing and other guests at the event before delivering her standard stump speech. About 250 people applauded as Clinton outlined her disapointment with the Bush administration.

'We're a temp provider,' CEO says
Under fire for his company's role in the unprovoked killings of more than a dozen innocent Iraqis, the founder of private security firm Blackwater says responsibility for direct oversight of the hired guns lies with the government's command in Baghdad, not the company itself.
"We're a temp provider," Blackwater CEO Erik Prince said.
Prince, a 38-year-old former Navy SEAL, denied that his family's political connections helped the company amass more than $1 billion in government contracts since 2001 in an interview with the Detroit Free Press's Todd Spangler . The Prince family is well known in national GOP circles for its giving to Republican, Christian and conservative causes, but the Blackwater CEO said his connections aren't behind the company's success.

Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez slammed the nation's Roman Catholic Church leadership as "morally unacceptable" late on Sunday for criticizing his proposal to rewrite the constitution to scrap term limits.
Chavez's reform plan, which voters are expected to approve in a December referendum, also includes allowing security forces to detain citizens without charge during political "emergencies" or major natural disasters.
Church leaders on Friday issued a strongly-worded statement accusing Chavez of seeking to concentrate power with an "authoritarian" proposal to overhaul the OPEC nation's constitution that he helped rewrite in 1999.

Marc Mukasey’s Sensitive Assignment: ‘Distance Giuliani From All Allegations About Kerik’
Marc Mukasey, the son of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey, has been tasked by Rudy Giuliani to “to keep an eye on” former NYPD police commissioner Bernard Kerik’s criminal investigation.
Earlier this month, media reports said that federal prosecutors were prepared to file charges against Kerik “that will likely include allegations of bribery, tax fraud and obstruction of justice.” Kerik, whose nomination as homeland security secretary in 2004 ended in scandal, pleaded guilty last year to two misdemeanor charges of taking payments from the same company that is alleged to have bribed him.
Publicly, Giuliani has offered a strong defense of Kerik, recently calling him an “excellent police commissioner” and praising him for being “heroic” on 9/11. But privately, the Giuliani team is attempting to whitewash their ties with Kerik. The New York Post reports that part of Marc Mukasey’s “sensitive assignment” has been to thwart Kerik’s lawyer from interviewing witnesses who might help his defense because those witnesses are “linked to Giuliani”:
A source familiar with the Kerik probe said Mukasey’s role in monitoring the Kerik case is “obviously trying to distance Giuliani from all [the allegations about Kerik], although obviously it all occurred on Giuliani’s watch.” […]
A source said Mukasey has “made it impossible” for [Kerik’s lawyer] “to interview witnesses” who work at Giuliani Partners, the consulting firm founded in 2002 by the former mayor after he left office. Kerik had been a key player in Giuliani Partners before his fall from grace.
Mukasey is “basically shutting them down,” the source said.
Marc Mukasey is currently a partner at Giuliani’s law firm where is a leader of the firm’s “Special Investigations” practice. His father, Judge Michael Mukasey, has called Giuliani a “good friend” and has pledged to recuse himself from all cases that might involve the former NYC mayor.

Fellow Anon'ers....
Don't be too surprised if, at the behest of his cultists, Sammy or his blog-gruppenfuerhers slam the lid down on Anonymous postings soon. As evidence by the old Majority Report blog, they'll probably "get over" their love of free speech eventually and "regretably due to the large amount of spamming from so-called anonymous posters, force all posters to register"....
followed closely by "regretably being forced to ban people for 'off-topic' and 'insulting' posts"....
followed closely by one voice, one thought, one mind blogging that a lot of the Seder-chips (and leftists in general) want from their echo chamber!
And if not....my apologies and big ups to Sam and his folks. Atleast you've shaken "Annatopianism"!

SIRNAK, Turkey — Dozens of Turkish military vehicles loaded with soldiers and heavy weapons rumbled toward the Iraq border on Monday after an ambush by guerrilla Kurds that left eight soldiers missing and killed 12. Iraq's president said the rebels would announce a cease-fire later in the day.
Turkey's military said it had had no contact with the eight soldiers after Sunday's clash and said 34 guerrillas had been killed so far in a counteroffensive. A pro-Kurdish news agency said the eight were captured _ a claim that would make it the largest seizure since 1995, when guerrillas grabbed eight soldiers and took them to northern Iraq.

Blackwater switches to
Blackwater switches to ‘less threatening logo.’ Blackwater’s infamous logo — “a bear’s paw print in a red crosshairs, under lettering that looks to have been ripped from a fifth of Jim Beam” has “undergone a publicity-conscious, corporate scrubbing.” Branding experts say that the new look is “far less ‘kick your butt’ and much more ‘quarterly report.’”
Blackwater insists that it had been working on the redesign before the Sept. 16 shooting in Iraq that killed 17 civilians, but the new logo didn’t appear on the company’s website until afterward.

US in Diplomatic 'Full Court Press' to Stop Turkish Incursion Into Iraq
The United States has opened a diplomatic "full court press" to urge Turkey not to invade northern Iraq, the State Department said Monday, as tensions between the two countries soared following an ambush by rebel Kurds that killed 12 Turkish soldiers and left eight missing.

Bush Ties Record Low Of 25%
Bush Ties Record Low Of 25% In New Poll
By Greg Sargent - October 22, 2007, 10:26AM
Yet another poll finds that only a quarter of the electorate approves of the job Bush is doing as President. The new American Research Group survey finds Bush's approval rating at 25% -- matching his low point in ARG polling.
Bush's numbers are also sagging (relatively, at least) among Republicans. His approval among GOPers has dropped to 67%, down from 80% last month.
http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/10/bush_ties_record_low_of_25_in_new_...
Who are you?
Your argument is enflamed with exclamation points and seeks to incite, but it is flawed.
1. I didn't decide to drink too much. You're assuming.
2. Did you know 'chevy'? Did he personally tell you that he picked to die? I doubt you're even qualified to serve.
3. They don't join to kill. They join because they need the money and there aren't any fucking JOBS here anymore because SOMEBODY keeps sending them to 3rd world countries that work for dirt. All the McDonalds jobs are taken by illegals.
4. Did he pick up a gun? Do you see a gun in that picture? Maybe he's a supply clerk.
5. Your flawed supports leads to a flawed conclusion. Go back to masturbating to pics of Coulter and leave me the fuck alone.

Good golly, Miss Molly, excerpted from 1.20.aught-six:
The majority (77 percent) thinks we should do "whatever it takes" to protect the environment. The majority (87 percent) thinks big oil companies are gouging consumers and would support a windfall profits tax.
That is the center, you fools. WHO ARE YOU AFRAID OF? ...

Cut to this guy, Kung Fu Monkey, a former stand-up road comic, now evidently a screenwriter, inna a coupla pieces on the topic of connecting w/an audience, written in Feb. 2006.
fwiw, this seems like purty straightforward stuff, but no one could ever argue that Democrats understood the simple art of making connections w/people, much less winning them over.
Very good stuff, imo.
(If you ain't inclined to read it, btw, you might brush this off as more "Mudcat Saunders" faux populist we-iz-gotta-connect-to-the-NASCAR-bubbas 'n poor-oppressed-white-males so's we can have-a-beer-wit-chur-preznit bullshit boilerplate. It isn't. It's about the principles back of makin' connections wit peeples about shit they actually care about 'n why just bein' correct on policy ain't near enough, either to win peoples over or to get past the cynical bastards who lie for fun and profit.)
I used to mention in passing about how Canada had single-payer health care. Always got a few "socialism" catcalls from the audience. [War Dog's night out, no doubt.]
But as soon as I said, "It's wrong for you to lose your house if your kid gets cancer," you could feel the audience swing, sometimes burst into applause. For that group, at least, a little meme-seed had been planted. I could have gone on about bed/patient ratios and per capita expenses to my heart's content [you may rest assured Kerry woulda]. But that wasn't relevant to my audience.

3.I have worked in the service industry my whole life including your beloved McDonald's. I have worked with Mexicans, Indians, and a whole array of people, not once have I ever not gotten a job because of a illegals.
4.Doesn't matter if your a supply clerk you're still issued a gun when you join. and you're trained to kill. Doh!

Blackwater accused of tax evasion.
In a letter to Blackwater CEO Erik Prince today, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) says he has obtained documents “which suggest that Blackwater may have engaged in significant tax evasion” by labeling their armed guards “independent contractors.” Due to the label, “Blackwater may have avoided paying millions of dollars in Social Security, Medicare, unemployment, and related taxes for which it is legally responsible,” writes Waxman. DynCorp and Triple Canopy, “the two other major private military contractors providing security services to the State Department in Iraq,” classify their guards as “employees.”

You're right
My babies. They are my legacy, my investment, my 401k if you will. I've nurtured them, I've educated them. And I'll be damned if they'll ever wear a military uniform. Does this make me anti-American? I don't think so.
I've already told my children how I feel about the matter. If they ever choose to try and enlist, they'd better wait until they're 18, and then they'd better hide from the Wrath of Mama. If they haven't made it to the recruitment office by the time I get wind of it, and if I think there's a shot of keepin' them out of that asylum, I'll kick their ass within an inch of their lives for their own preservation and not bat an eyelash. Does this make me a bad mother? I don't think so.
My children love me dearly, but they already know I'm a crazy mama. I'll stick my size 14 shoe up their size 1...and they know it.
I'm a warrior, not a weeper.

Self-righteous warmongers phony patriots
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
You have to wonder if the whole conservative movement in the U.S. is living in a weird alternate reality in which the only thing that matters is what you say, and facts, consistency and honor mean nothing.
The recent remarks by Rush Limbaugh in which he called military men who opposed the Iraq war "phony soldiers" is another example of the strange world in which he (and a lot of neocons) exist. The reason: Limbaugh could be the poster boy of a group of war cheerleaders (including Dick Cheney, Mike Medved, Sean Hannity, Paul Wolfowitz, Karl Rove, Mike Savage, et al.) who chose to avoid military service when it was their turn. Now that the coast is clear, they've all morphed into self-righteous war boosters sitting in comfortable offices lecturing the rest of us about patriotism and duty.
Picture Osama bin Laden acting that way, relaxing in a La-Z-Boy recliner and urging his followers to do what he never did. He'd be ridiculed. And, while there is nothing to admire in bin Laden's murderous ideology, at least he actually put his money where his mouth is and fought for his cause........

U.S. launches 'full-court press' to persuade Turkey not to launch strike
Please... don't fuck up our war any more than we already have.
BAGHDAD - Iraq's president, a Kurd, said Monday that Kurdish rebels will announce a cease-fire, his office confirmed, as tensions soared over a Turkish threat to stage a cross-border incursion against guerrilla bases in northern Iraq.
President Jalal Talabani said the Kurdistan Workers' Party, know by its Kurdish acronym PKK, would make the announcement later Monday, a day after the outlawed group killed 12 Turkish soldiers and reportedly captured eight others.

Not Guilty Verdict In Alleged Hamas Aid Case Charity Accused Of Aiding Hamas
WNBC
DALLAS -- Three former leaders of a group that was once the nation's largest Muslim charity have been acquitted on most charges of funneling millions in illegal aid to Middle Eastern terrorists.
The five former leaders of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development are accused of funneling millions of dollars to the militant group Hamas.
The U.S. government designated Hamas a terrorist group in 1995 and again in 1997, making financial transactions with the group illegal.
The federal court jury in Dallas delivered a verdict to a magistrate on Thursday after 19 days of deliberations. It was sealed until Monday morning so that the judge and all the prosecutors who handled the case could be present.
Each defendant faced up to 35 counts, including conspiracy and money laundering.

Trial starts for church that protests at soldiers' funerals
The Associated Press
8:20 AM EDT, October 22, 2007
A fundamentalist church that protests at soldiers' funerals faces its first lawsuit today from the family of a fallen serviceman.
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church face trial in Baltimore for an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit filed by the father of a fallen Marine from Westminster. Albert Snyder of York, Penn., says the church interrupted his grieving process at the funeral for his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq last year. Church members say they were only exercising their free speech rights.

Peter Dragon, an enthusiastic, confident and unreasonably hopeful Cleveland Indians fan has been placed on suicide watch. Unnamed sources indicate that Peter had been gorging himself on partially hydrogenated fats and Aspartame in a poorly planned effort to end it all.
Mental health officials have removed the drawstring from Mr. Dragon's pants and placed him in a small room emptied of all but a box of Kleenex, a notepad and a crayon. Every hour an attendant stands watch while Peter is forced to drink eight ounces of water to prevent dehydration due to excessive tearing.
Efforts to encourage Mr. Dragon to focus on football season have failed thus far due to the Browns' dismal record.

A Federal Magistrate Judge
A Federal Magistrate Judge issued a recommendation that a temporary restraining order be issued that would prevent the White House from destroying back-up copies of millions of e-mails. The e-mails in question were destroyed from White House servers between March 2003 and October 2005 but are believed to be preserved on a back-up system. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is suing for the e-mails to be preserved. (Citizens For Ethics)

We have no team
Closest thing we have for baseball is the (ha!) Royals, and the closest thing we have for football is (ha!) the Chiefs.
Although the Chiefs remind us of just how bad the Royals organization has become. At least the Chiefs are still major league; they're still trying.
The Royals just got their new team manager from...Japan?

Calderon Addresses Mexican Nation On Collapsing Oil Production
Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon is delivering a grim message: The largest oil producer in Latin America is running out of crude. ``Our oil reserves have been consistently falling,'' and the decline is ``severely threatening'' government finances, Calderon told a nationwide television audience in an address last month at the National Palace. That's the same place where seven decades earlier Lazaro Cardenas cemented the anti-American legacy of his presidency by nationalizing the petroleum industry.

Miracles Do Happen...Twice...But Not Very Often
For Peter Dragon, it was like a Blue Jays' deja-vu all over again.
---------
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Royals
...With the Royals down 3-games-to-one in the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Royals eventually rallied to win the series 4-3.
In the 1985 World Series against the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals – the so-called "I-70 Series" because the two teams are both located in the state of Missouri and connected by Interstate 70 – the Royals again fell behind 3-1...
...Following the tension of Game Six, the Cardinals came undone in Game Seven, and the Royals won 11-0 to clinch the franchise's first World Series title...
Has it gone as far east as Riverside County?---
This morning there was a fire in Ontario and a fire has started in the Mountains in the area of Arrowhead.
The air around here is full of smoke and ash.
Nothing is close to me though.
The News is mainly just reporting on the Malibu/LA fires.
There are fires also in Irvine (Orange County) and down in San Diego has a big one or a couple of them.
Still is windy and the Santa Ana's are supposed to last till sometime Tuesday.

What Fred Phelps really meant to say was "*I* hate America, fags, Sweden, Canada, I rape boys, and oh yeah, we're all gonna die."
He's freakin' loony.

Ouch - Poor Peter.
I wasn't sold out on Cleveland, but I've been to the Rockies stadium. I like that team, the stadium, and *my God* you should see the awesome view of the horizon from a Rockie's seat. It's positively gawgeous. :-) Mountaintops, purple haze... *sigh*...
Eh, Boston's already won. Give someone else a chance, already.
