Weekend Watchdog

If it's Friday, it's time for Weekend Watchdog! Here are my suggested questions for the Sunday shows. Add your own in the comments, and send them on to the shows. Contact info for the shows is below.

Remember: always be brief, polite and respectful when contacting the media, so our voices will be taken seriously.

For Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. (Fox News Sunday): You support the veto of expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program to cover nearly 5 million more kids. In your last debate, you said: "Another one [the president] should veto is the SCHIP program, which he should say, 'Take the "C" out of, because now it's for everybody, like every other entitlement program.'"

Presumably you were being critical of states that use SCHIP dollars, after receiving waivers from the Bush administration, to help insure low-income adults.

But the bill that was vetoed would have ended that practice, and allowed those low-income adults to be covered through Medicaid.

Since the bill actually addressed your concern, what was the real reason you supported the veto?

For former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass. (CBS' Face The Nation): You are boasting that you were endorsed by Bob Jones III, former president of Bob Jones University.

Jones previously backed a ban on interracial dating on his campus, then later permitted it but only with parental approval.

He also said of Catholicism, and your religion of Mormonism: "The diminution of evangelistic enterprise to cults which call themselves Christian, including Catholicism and Mormonism, is frightening."

What does embracing the endorsement of this bigoted man say about you?

For former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark. (Fox News Sunday): You advocate the "FairTax," abolishing the I.R.S. and replacing the federal income tax with a 23% federal sales tax, which you say would be revenue-neutral.

But Citizens for Tax Justice report that:

"[We] found that in order to maintain current revenue levels, this sales tax would have to be around 50 percent. It is also very regressive. Low-income households would pay more for everything they buy, while the wealthy would hit the jackpot with tax-free capital gains, dividends and interest. We are fairly confident that this proposal will go nowhere when people realize that a house that costs, say, $200,000 would cost $300,000 under this plan."

Conservative economist Bruce Bartlett reports that this proposal originates from the Church of Scientology for the sole purpose of getting the I.R.S. off its back and "in the rush to rid the world of the IRS, the plan's authors neglected some important details." He continues:

"Unlike every other sales tax in the world, the FairTax actually applies to everything - every pencil, every tank - the government buys. Unfortunately, the FairTax proposal doesn't take into account this increase in government spending. Thus, it will either provoke a massive cut in federal spending or a massive increase in taxes.

"And what about the poor who bear the brunt of this highly regressive tax? The FairTax would track every household's monthly income and then cut checks to minimize the pain, a logistical challenge that will ultimately resemble some welfare state nightmare. What's more, this would cost gobs of money, forcing further cuts in spending ... the FairTax is a crackpot scheme from beginning to end."

How can you become a top-tier presidential candidate when your signature proposal is widely derided as "crackpot?"

Working Families repost

I'm pretty much convinced that resistance is the only useful thing on the national and state levels. Voting is effective locally, and the changes made locally are the only thing that will lead to bigger changes. Or at least will build the tension between the top and the bottom to a point where change is inescapable. You can't change the pyramid from the top down. That's how I'm feeling recently.

I'm going to be working for these guys starting Monday:

http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/about.html

They work on on state and national elections too, but that's not what I'm interested in. I'm done with the horse and pony show. National politics only interest me when there are protests and mass demonstrations. And Internet organization is effective in shaping the language of dissent, which is more important than people give credit. I'll leave the big fights up to you guys. I think the "liberal left" strategy of holding representatives accountable to the people doesn't work (because the problem is not a left/right thing, but a top/bottom thing), but I think it can be an effective strategy on a local level. We'll see.

Until November 6th I'll be going to counties where elections are happening, and talking to folks, informing them about the important issues, and reminding them to get out and vote. After that maybe there'll be something else for me to do. They do stuff year round - organize townhall meetings, demonstrations, and other friendly reminders for the candidates they help elect.

Lurking means reading and not posting.

The majority of "guests" are lurking. Nothing wrong with that.

Hiya, folks.

Death of the Machine

By PAUL KRUGMAN

“There are two things that are important in politics. The first is money, and I can’t remember what the second one is.” So declared Mark Hanna, the great Gilded Age political boss.

Karl Rove has often described Hanna as his role model. And predictions that Mr. Rove and his disciples would succeed in creating a permanent Republican majority — I have a whole bookshelf of volumes with titles like “One Party Nation” and “Building Red America” — depended crucially on the assumption that the G.O.P. would have vastly more money than its opponents. It might even, some thought, match the 10-to-1 advantage Hanna gave William McKinley when he ran against William Jennings Bryan.

Oops. According to data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics, in the current election cycle every one of the top 10 industries making political donations is giving more money to Democrats. Even industries that have in the past been overwhelmingly Republican, like insurance and pharmaceuticals, are now splitting their donations more or less evenly. Oil and gas is the only major industry that the G.O.P. can still call its own.

The sudden burst of corporate affection for Democrats is good news for the party’s campaign committees, but not necessarily good news for progressives. Before I get to the down side, however, let’s talk about why business seems to be giving up on the G.O.P.

To some extent it’s a matter of cold political calculation. Polls, plus a wave of G.O.P. retirements, suggest that next year the Democrats will expand their majority in the House, which is already bigger than anything the Republicans ever had during their 12-year reign. Of the 34 Senate seats up for election, 22 are held by Republicans, and major Democratic gains seem all but inevitable.

Add to this the weakness of the Republican presidential field, and it’s not surprising that lobbyists are casting in their lot with the likely winners. But that’s not the whole story.

There’s also disgust, even in the corporate world, with the corruption and incompetence of the Bush years. People on the left often describe the Bush administration as an agent of corporate America; that’s giving it too much credit.

The truth is that while the administration has lavished favors on some powerful, established corporations, the biggest scandals have involved companies that were small or didn’t exist at all until they started getting huge contracts thanks to their political connections. Thus, Blackwater USA was a tiny business until it somehow became the leading supplier of mercenaries for the War on Terror™.

And the lethal amateurishness of these loyal Bushies on the make horrifies the corporate elite almost as much as it horrifies ordinary Americans.

Last but not least, even corporations are relieved to see the end of what amounted to a protection racket.

"14 Characteristics of Fascism"

You may have seen the webpage that details this with lots of hyperlinks. But the tedious chasing down of one hyperlink after another, no matter how spot-on and important the message, can't compare to actually hearing it and seeing pictures.

Narrated by the great Mike Malloy, this short video presents a pretty devastating case that out of the 14 characteristics of fascism, George Bush's Amerika fully satisfies all 14 criterion. At one point, Malloy actually brings to mind vintage Keith Olbermann when he's doing his "Worst People in the World" segment on Countdown.

More a little later on the S-chip that our courageous Willie Wetleg Congress still hasn't the balls to knock off Bush's shoulder.

Another thing I thought was interesting

Working Families party does this fusion voting thing that is illegal in most states but not in NY, where a candidate can run on say the Democratic party line, but also the Working Families line if the party decides to endorse them. This means that people are voting for their progressive values, more than the candidate. The idea is that the candidates see that the Working Families voters swing the election for them. Of course, I'm skeptical that this will make a difference on the state and national level, since the candidates are so deep in the pocket of big money, but you see why it could be effective for progressives on a local level. And I still think that enough local changes could lead to bigger changes, and put effective pressure on the top of the pyramid.

The other thing the fusion ticket means is that Democrats get more independant votes, since Working Families backs Democrats, since they are usually closest to Working Family issues. So you could see why fusion tickets are illegal in most states.

I don't buy into the "Nader cost us the election" nonsense, but fusion tickets are kind of the opposite dynamic as that third party voter drain theory. Anyway, that's my rambling train of thought...

hey now

I love Mickey Mouse... :-)

What Can We Do To Free Mumia?

What can be done today to win Mumia's freedom? In a
perfect world the solution would be in the French
tradition of 1789. Drive the corrupt modern day
monarchs of capital from their haughty palaces of
power and storm the Bastille to free the innocent,
including Mumia!

But we do yet not live in a perfect world. Our power
has proved sufficient to stay the executioner's hand
for 25 years and beat back two warrants for Mumia's
execution. It has gotten us to the point where a possible aberration in the system has allowed the May 17 hearing to finally expose a critical aspects of Mumia's frame-up. But we are still far from seeing a free Mumia walk out of his supermax death row cell at the State Correctional Institution Greene in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

But with the fight for one man's life, (Mumia is Everyman and Everywoman who faces death at the hands of criminals.) once again on the line and at center stage, we have a new opportunity to reinvigorate our movement, broaden its base and ensure that justice is done.

Our capacity to mobilize in unprecedented numbers and
make the political price of Mumia's murder and
continued incarceration too high to pay is central to
the work ahead. History has amply demonstrated that
all of our historic victories stem from the exercise
of our collective power. That power lies with all who
cherish freedom and despise injustice. Join the fight
for Mumia's freedom!

Terror drill turns into the real deal near Lloyd Center

By KATU Web Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. - Bomb-sniffing dogs being used for a TOPOFF exercise in northeast Portland on Thursday detected the real thing, prompting police to cordon off a hotel, close nearby streets and shut down the MAX.

According to Brian Schmautz with the Portland Police Bureau, as officials were doing a sweep of the Doubletree Hotel located near the Lloyd Center (in preparation for the TOPOFF exercise), bomb-sniffing dogs got a hit on several vehicles in the vicinity.

Police immediately cordoned off the area so they could investigate. They later discovered that the dogs had detected traces of explosives in police and military vehicles that were involved in the exercise that was being staged. The bomb residue is something common in those type of vehicles.

MAX service resumed just before 4:30 p.m. and police began clearing the area shortly after.

Air Force plans to fire officers involved in 'mistaken' B-52 flight with nuclear weapons

By Pauline Jelinek
ASSOCIATED PRESS
10:28 a.m. October 18, 2007

WASHINGTON – The Air Force is planning to fire at least five officers for an incident in which nuclear-armed missiles were mistakenly loaded on a B-52 bomber and flown across the U.S. – the worst known violation of nuclear security rules in decades.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is scheduled to be briefed Friday on the plan to fire the officers and other results of a six-week Air Force probe into the Aug. 30 incident. No one noticed for hours that the weapons were on the bomber, several Defense Department officials said.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated..."

http://www.truthnews.us/?p=353

Excerpts From "Senate and Neocons Agree to Carve Up Bill of Rights"

Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire, October 18, 2007
It's now official, the entire Senate is criminally complicit in undermining the Fourth Amendment."Senate Democrats and Republicans reached agreement with the Bush administration yesterday on the terms of new legislation to control the federal government's domestic surveillance program, which includes a highly controversial grant of legal immunity to telecommunications companies that have assisted the program, according to congressional sources," reports the CIA's favorite newspaper, the Washington Post.

More than anything, this "agreement" (criminal conspiracy) was reached in order to protect multinational telecoms, open to "pending lawsuits alleging violations of privacy rights by telecommunications companies that provided telephone records, summaries of e-mail traffic and other information to the government after Sept. 11, 2001, without receiving court warrants."

Greenspan questions ‘superfund’
By Krishna Guha in Washington and David Wighton in New York

Published: October 19 2007 17:12 | Last updated: October 20 2007 01:51

Alan Greenspan on Friday raised serious doubts over the plan to create a $75bn-plus investment fund to buy the assets of troubled investment vehicles, warning that it could prevent the market from establishing true clearing prices for asset-backed securities.

“It is not clear to me that the benefits exceed the risks,” the former chairman of the Federal Reserve told Emerging Markets magazine. He added, “The experience I have had with that sort of intervention is very mixed.”

His comments came amid growing speculation on Wall Street that the current Federal Reserve has mixed feelings about the superfund plan, which was put forward by Citigroup, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase with the active encouragement of the US Treasury.

Analysts believe the Fed sees potential benefits in the plan in terms of preventing a possible firesale of assets, and does not think it is designed to allow financial institutions to avoid recognising losses. But they think the Fed is worried the plan could be feeding investor anxiety, and thinks markets might normalise faster if some assets in the troubled vehicles were sold in the market and prices were allowed to find a floor.

Paulson hits back at ‘superfund’ critics
By Krishna Guha in Washington

Published: October 20 2007 03:42 | Last updated: October 20 2007 03:42

Hank Paulson, the US treasury secretary, on Friday night hit back against critics of the plan to create a $75bn-plus investment fund to buy the assets of troubled investment vehicles, suggesting it is based on a misunderstanding of how the new “superfund” would work.

“The concept is not to buy bad assets” that have credit problems, Mr Paulson told the FT. “The concept is for the end investors working with the banks to buy assets that are not credit impaired.”

He said that by focusing on the “very best assets” the proposed fund would “accelerate the return of liquidity to parts of this market” for asset-backed commercial paper.

Mr Paulson said “we have had a lot of conversations with market participants and conversations with the president’s working group” of regulators including the Federal Reserve about the asset-backed commercial paper market.

He said “there was a view we heard from the market – from banks, and from those that operated SIVs [special investment vehicles] and from investors that something like this would be constructive.”

Washington, avoid doing

Washington, avoid doing favours for Wall Street
By John Gapper

Published: October 19 2007 19:22 | Last updated: October 19 2007 19:22

There was something troubling about this week’s initiatives by Hank Paulson, the US Treasury secretary, to address the country’s deteriorating housing market and the credit and liquidity problems that this is still causing for banks.

His speech in Washington on Tuesday, predicting that the subprime mortgage crisis would spread further, unnerved markets. Mr Paulson’s close-cropped hair, bald pate and intense manner, combined with his gloomy message, made him look like Dr Doom. His hobby is bird-watching, but I would not care to be the bird that he stares at through a pair of binoculars.

Mr Paulson has another appearance problem. Before going to Washington he was a powerful figure on Wall Street as chairman and chief executive of Goldman Sachs, the investment bank. And, under him, the Treasury has taken an unusually active role in promoting the $75bn “superfund” intended to ease commercial paper problems affecting some big US banks.

Governments usually avoid getting involved in such plans, for fear of being seen to be bailing out private-sector financial institutions. Yet Mr Paulson and Robert Steel, the under-secretary for domestic finance (and another Goldman Sachs alumnus), have waded in over the past month. The Treasury convened meetings and encouraged banks to sign up.

Thank you, Sir. May I have another?: The Sadomasochism of Representative Democracy
It's been a dynamite week for thundering impotence and pain.

One major story led with a ... well, however expected, let's just call it a disappointment: "Leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee reached a tentative agreement ... with the Bush administration that would give telephone carriers legal immunity for any [grossly illegal] role they played in the National Security Agency's [more grossly illegal] domestic eavesdropping program."

Naturally, the millions in past and future campaign contributions coughed up and transferred from said carriers to said leaders provided only access for case pleading. Perish any suspicion of bribery, subtle or otherwise.

But then the news item took a hard right turn that left me, as Mr. Mencken once described his similar feelings about democracy, "paled and palsied by mirth." The abovementioned debate clubbers, you see, had "review[ed] classified documents related to the participation of the telephone carriers in the security agency program and came away from that early review convinced that the companies had" -- brace yourself -- "'acted in good faith.'"

Let's see -- who was it who provided the "classified documents" that argued for "good faith"? When they arrived at that one, the oxymoronic Senate Intelligence leaders must have had in mind that famous video of George stumbling over the "Fool me once ..." proverb.

Visiting the House for a moment, we find even fewer signs of intelligent life.

Pres. Bush should apologize

Pres. Bush should apologize and not Rep. Pete Stark

(Caution: Graphic photos embedded in this piece)

By Mary MacElveen

October 20, 2007

Congressman Pete Stark has caught flak for saying these words “You don’t have money to fund the war or children. But you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.” He stated those words lashing out at both President Bush and his Republican colleagues concerning how much the United States government is spending in Iraq as opposed to the SCHIP program.

Having seen the most horrific photos no one should ever have to view which are a product of this illegal war, I would advise Rep. Stark to stick to his guns. I would also tell him not apologize or retract his comments made of the president and the comments directed at his Republican colleagues who failed to come to the aid of our children. The time has come for any protection of Bush to come to an end. That is also directed towards all who feel he should apologize.

I do believe that anyone who can knowingly lie sending our men and women in the armed services to their death is both morally corrupt, and is unable to empathize let alone sympathize with those that have died. In my opinion, Bush is as demonic as they come. By lying us into this war, he has proven to all, he has no soul.

The Show Trials by

The Show Trials
by emptywheel

I'm not really surprised by the reason the lead prosecutor for Gitmo detainees quit--as reported by the WaPo. The Administration wanted show trials in time for the 2008 election, and they were willing to use classified information to do so.

Politically motivated officials at the Pentagon have pushed for convictions of high-profile detainees ahead of the 2008 elections, the former lead prosecutor for terrorism trials at Guantanamo Bay said last night, adding that the pressure played a part in his decision to resign earlier this month.

I'm just a little curious about the timing. The guy the Administration put in to "nano-manage" the prosecutions, General Thomas Hartmann, only came on this summer.

Hartmann arrived as legal adviser to the convening authority last summer, and suddenly, Davis said during a lengthy interview, his office was inundated with what he called "nano-management," including requests to oversee cases that had previously been left solely to prosecutors.

Part of the new focus, Davis said, was to speed up cases that would show the public the system was working. Davis said he wanted to focus on cases that had declassified evidence, so the public could see the entire trial through news coverage. That would defuse possible allegations that the trials were stacked against defendants.

But Hartmann said he was satisfied with putting on cases that included closed sessions, because the law allows it.

"He said, the way we were going to validate the system was by getting convictions and good sentences," Davis said. "I felt I was being pressured to do something less than full, fair and open."

Hatmann came in, interfered in prosecutors' jobs, demanded to conduct pre-trial discussions with defendants' lawyers himself, and gave the team a prioritized list of prosecutions to carry out. This summer. After the Administration had spent 6 months getting flogged for doing the same thing with our civilian judicial system.

Which is why it's not enough to let the Alberto Gonzales inquiry just take its course. Because in the absence of any real punishment for the politicization of the civilian judiciary, they're going to keep on politicizing justice.

VIDEO: 9/11 Hecklers Take

VIDEO: 9/11 Hecklers Take Down LIVE Bill Maher Show...in Real Time...
For a Few Minutes Anyway....
Live TV. Love it.

On tonight's Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, the host had to throw out the first of the 9/11 hecklers himself. Things went down hill from there...

Members of the "9/11 Truth Movement" have been a bit angry with Maher since he suggested they needed to be medicated in a "New Rules" segment in September. That video is here.

Tonight, Maher got a bit angry in return as audience members repeatedly interrupted the panel discussion with Maher, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, Rep. Shiela Jackson Lee (D-TX) and LA Times columnist Joel Stein.

After the last of the hecklers --- who ground the show to a halt (of sorts), for a few minutes --- is removed from the studio audience, Maher says that folks from the movement have been holding protests outside of his studio ever since his comments last month. Tonight, a few of 'em got tickets to the show.

While things got a bit rough, and Maher called for an "ass kicking", nobody was tased, bro...at least to our knowledge.

Why worry about Iran?

WASHINGTON -- Air Force weapons officers assigned to secure nuclear warheads failed on five occasions to examine a bundle of cruise missiles headed to a B-52 bomber in North Dakota, leading the plane's crew to unknowingly fly six nuclear-armed missiles across the country.

That August flight, the first known incident in which the military lost track of its nuclear weapons since the dawn of the atomic age, lasted nearly three hours, until the bomber landed at Barksdale Air Force Base in northern Louisiana.

But according to an Air Force investigation presented to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Friday, the nuclear weapons sat on a plane on the runway at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota for nearly 24 hours without ground crews noticing the warheads had been moved out of a secured shelter.

"This was an unacceptable mistake," said Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne at a Pentagon news conference. "We would really like to ensure it never happens again."

For decades, it has been military policy to never discuss the movement or deployment of the nuclear arsenal. But Wynne said the accident was so serious that he ordered an exception so the mistakes could be made public.

On Aug. 29, North Dakota crew members were supposed to load 12 unarmed cruise missiles in two bundles under the B-52's wings to be taken to Louisiana to be decommissioned. But in what the Air Force has ruled were five separate mistakes, six missiles contained nuclear warheads.

Missoula County attorney to police: Halt misdemeanor arrests for pot

Nearly a year after voters made the Garden City a little greener by asking county law enforcement to ignore adult marijuana offenses, Missoula's top prosecutor has adopted an official policy to uphold the referendum.

“In the interest of compliance with the 2006 voter initiative on marijuana ... we are asking law enforcement officers to stop arresting individuals or writing and submitting tickets (with mandatory appearance dates) where the offense committed is solely possession of marijuana in misdemeanor amounts or possession of drug paraphernalia intended for use of marijuana,” according to a draft of the policy by Missoula County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg, an outspoken opponent of the measure.

What's the Difference Between a Group of Friends and a Clique?

Friendship or special interest groups are normal and healthy. It's nice to feel you belong and fit in. It's good to know you have friends to hang out with. Being part of a group can help people develop relationship skills, feel close to others, get and give support, share ideas, discover what's important to them, and have fun.

Usually, friendship groups form around the things people have in common. So jocks, Goths, preps, skaters, and even the math club are naturally drawn together because they share similar interests. The people in these groups feel they have a place where they are welcome and supported, and where they can be themselves, quirks and all.

Some groups stick together for a long time. Others drift apart after a while as people develop new interests, make different friends, or just find they have less in common. People can move in and out of different groups and can even be part of several at the same time. Even within a group, people often have one or two friends they feel closest to and enjoy the most.

Some friendship groups seem pretty flexible and welcome people to join in. Others seem much more restricted, though. People in these groups make it clear that not just anyone can be part of their crowd. That type of restricted group is sometimes called a clique.

What's the Deal With Cliques?

Cliques are tight groups that usually have a strict code of membership and ways to act. Instead of being centered on shared values and beliefs, many cliques tend to focus on maintaining their status and popularity. For instance, a certain clique may try to make it seem like the people in the clique are "better" than those outside, or that their clique is higher status than another clique.

People in cliques sometimes use their power to hurt others on purpose, either by excluding them, being mean, or both. Sometimes they might insult people by trying to "fix" them or give them "makeovers." Sometimes it becomes more serious and someone outside the group is targeted or victimized for being, looking, or acting different.

Unlike regular groups of friends, where members are free to socialize with others outside the group, people in cliques do everything together. They sit together in class, go to the mall together after school — and they only do stuff with other clique members or people they decide are "cool."

Although people might think it's better to belong to a clique than to be excluded, many times people in cliques end up dealing with lots of pressures and rules. They soon start to worry about whether they'll continue to be popular or whether they'll be dropped. After a while, they may begin to realize that true friends wouldn't be so bossy or demanding.

Why Do Cliques Attract People?

Cliques attract people for different reasons: For some people, being popular or cool is the most important thing, and cliques give them a place where they can get this social status. Other people want to be in cliques because they don't like to feel left out. Some people simply feel it's better to be on the inside than the outside (it's not, but more on that later).

Cliques give people who like to take control a chance to be in charge (for good or bad!). For people who feel more comfortable following, they offer a place where rules are clearly defined. It's usually clear to clique members what they need to do to fit in. Sometimes that means sacrificing some freedom and following the leader rather than doing what you feel like doing.

Clique membership is usually tightly controlled by the leaders. These social gatekeepers are the ones with the power to decide who should be hot and who should not. This type of membership control usually happens in cliques of girls.

As many great kids have found, entry into a clique isn't guaranteed. In fact, a girl who is seen as likeable and popular may actually be excluded from belonging to a clique. That's because her personality or confidence may pose a threat to the leaders. She may not be a good "follower" — especially if she can be popular enough on her own. Sometimes her friends may even be invited to join when she isn't. Clique members may deliberately exclude her in an attempt to take away her perceived power or the threat they think she could pose.

Cliques aren't just for girls. Guys form cliques too — usually around a sport, computer game, or type of clothing or music. They can be just as mean as girls about the outcasts of the social group.

Hillary is unstoppable

The fact remains that Hillary Clinton leads her nearest rival by 30 percentage points. Sorry guys, but I think there is something here. Democrats like Hillary Clinton.

Democrats 2008: Hillary 45%, Obama 20%

- More Democratic Party backers in the United States are voicing support for Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to a poll by American Research Group. 45 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 presidential primary, up six points in a month.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 20 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 13 per cent. Support is lower for Delaware senator Joe Biden, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, and Connecticut senator Chris Dodd.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to a request by Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH). Boehner and 153 of his Republican colleagues today voted to uphold President Bush’s veto of Congressional legislation that would have provided health care to 10 million children.

“I have nothing but respect for our brave men and women in uniform and wish them the very best,” said Stark. “But I respect neither the Commander-in-Chief who keeps them in harms way nor the chickenhawks in Congress who vote to deny children health care.”

Many Christians do not consider Mormons Christian. Jews, by definition, aren't Christian. I don't want to put words in your mouth. If a person is Jewish, would you vote for him/her? If a person has been divorced three times, can he be a good Christian?

God can vote too !

If we have had Christian presidents over the past 200 years, then I would say this country has been pretty successful overall with them in office. Why change a good thing?

Flashback 1988: George Bush On The National Guard And Viet Nam
By: Logan Murphy @ 6:38 AM - PDT

Take a look at this video from 1988 of Connie Chung interviewing a much younger George W. Bush at the 1988 Republican National Convention. Chung asks Bush about then Vice Presidential Candidate, Dan Quayle, and his admission that phone calls had been made to get him out of serving in Viet Nam and into the National Guard. Our future president lauds Quayle for his service in the Guard, then proceeds to gloat to a surprised Chung:

Bush: “I flew fighters in the Texas Air National Guard for which I’m very proud.” [Snip]

“They should have probably called up the National Guard in those days. Maybe we would have done better in Vietnam.”

‘There is no Iraqi

‘There is no Iraqi government’
By: Steve Benen @ 7:10 PM - PDT Six weeks ago, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said we would see “a major breakthrough” within “weeks” on political reconciliation in Iraq, which he believes is unfolding at “breakneck speed.”

It’s one of those quotes that looks increasingly ridiculous all the time.

A principal architect of Iraq’s interim constitution, who resigned in August as one of the country’s top diplomats, has laid out a devastating critique of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the U.S. occupation, telling NBC News that, functionally, “there is no Iraqi government.”

The diplomat, Feisal Amin Istrabadi, said in his first interview since stepping down as Iraq’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations that “this government has got to go.”

Istrabadi said the Iraqi government itself is an illusion, stocked with incompetent administrators who had helped bring about “chaos and instability.” He pointed to the Health Ministry, dominated by the Mahdi Army militia. “You cannot have this sectarian doling out of the Cabinet ministries,” Istrabadi said. “You’ve got to bring in competent technocrats to try to run those ministries, the service ministries.”

This guy is clearly not on the same page as the Bush administration.

Spoiled brat screening quiz

After he (or she) is 2-3 years old, does your blogger:
have frequent temper tantrums?
act very demanding and always want to get his own way?
get frustrated easily?
fight, protest, or say "no" to everything?
rarely listen when you say "no" or "stop"?
not understand that there is a difference between what he needs and what he wants?
have little respect for what other people want?
frequently interrupt and disrupt the blog?
throw tantrums when he doesn't get his way?
usually have trouble playing with other bloggers?

It can't be fun having a blogger who is a spoiled brat. Unfortunately, giving in may work in the short term, stopping a tantrum, but it just teaches your blogger that his misbehavior works to get him what he wants. If you don't want your blogger to become spoiled, learn to set limits, and be consistent.

Pelosi condemns Stark's remark

Washington

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rebuked a fellow San Francisco Bay-area liberal Friday for what she said were "inappropriate" comments about Iraq during a congressional debate.

During a debate on children's health care Thursday, Rep. Pete Stark accused Republicans of sending troops to Iraq to "get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."

Condemnations rolled in from Republican politicians; right-leaning bloggers had a field day; and a White House spokesman declined to "dignify those remarks" with a response.

Limbaugh is getting scared.

Hahahahahahaha.

If Rush is writing 2 million dollar checks to charity, has 600 radio stations, has 20 million listeners, I would say he is doing incredibly well.

That scene sort of reminds me of an old Creedence song.

...If Rush is writing 2 million dollar checks to charity..
----------
Compare Limbaugh's charitable contributions with the contributions of peers of wealth like Ayrton Senna, Ted Turner, Tiger Woods, Richard Branson, Ewing Kauffman, Alfred Nobel, Oprah Winfrey, Jimmy Carter, Angelina Jolie, Warren Buffet, Tim Robbins, Paul Simon, Bob Barker...

...then get back to me.

"You win, Rush."

I am unaware that they have given anything to the troops. I don't know that the troops listen to them on radio every day. I don't know that any of those people support the war.

Rush is the king of all talk radio. He earned it. He did the work. Rush is a self-made man.

The winning bid for Harry Reid's "phony soldiers" letter smearing Rush is $2,100,100, from Philanthropist Betty Casey of the Eugene B. Casey Foundation. This is the highest bid for a charity item in the history of eBay. With Rush's matching bid, $4.2 million will go to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF.org).

Outrage: Harry Reid took to the floor of the Senate and tried to horn in on the credit for this brilliant refutation of his smear, as if he'd meant his letter to help raise money for MC-LEF all along. Translation: "You win, Rush." Reid made no mention of Rush's matching contribution, nor did he say if any of the 41 Democrat signatories will match the bid as Rush has called on them to do.

It is understandable that you would be jealous of Rush

AAR came to play in the same league with Rush. Rush welcomed Sam and the crew to the game. Rush enjoys newcomers and was willing to give some good advice to the upstarts.

Sadly AAR had their own ideas about how to run a radio network. Stand-up bar comics might not have been the best choice to mount a counter-attack on right wing radio. Rush tried to tell them, only the pros make it talk radio. The rest end up with Internet shows.

Answer this Question

So did the foundation get their money's worth?
Kieta, the vice president of AmericanMemorabilia.com who goes by only one name, said what makes the letter appealing to a buyer is all the media attention the correspondence has received, but it holds no real historical or collector value.
“If you compare it to an Abraham Lincoln document, there is obviously no comparison,” Kieta said. “This is strictly a promotional marketing ploy. Historically speaking, is it a historical document? I wouldn’t categorize it as a historical document.”

"Jealous of Rush?"

What, pray tell, is there to be jealous about? He has no brains, is a drug addict and can't control his obesity without speed. He continues to get weak-kneed before the likes of Islamic fundies and preaches that we should fear terrorism never thinking for a second that this is exactly a terrorist's aim: for Americans to be constantly afraid. Rush refuses to participate in any kind of debate setting and prefers to spout his factless drivel from behind his golden microphone like a chickenshit. That a large percentage of people are enthralled by this speaks to the contempt this country has for education and fact-based analysis. His followers are racist, selfish, closeted warmongers with double digit IQs.

Now, this may be success to you in that a large portion of America is not unlike Rush in being fairly uneducated and understimulated, preferring opinion to fact because, well, it's convenient. Rush saw the angle and he makes a ton of money off of their listenership, but jealous...come on, Anon, let's just call it as we see it, shall we.

We over here in Sederland have decided on a path of greater resistance. One based on the simple premise that America isn't #1, nor is it our goal to be; that education is a lifelong process and that the mind should be wide open to constructive knowledge and not fear and dominionism. We accept multiple worldviews and strive for multiracial and multigendered societies that accept peer-reviewed empirical evidence as more trustworthy than say, belief in mythology and misinterpreted parable.

You don't and that's okay; we understand, it's just your way. If you want to come here and throw pebbles, feel free, but don't be alamed when they bounce off and hit you between the eyes. Look on the bright side, maybe they'll knock something loose.

The Ayrton Senna Foundation

It was only after his death was it revealed that Senna had donated millions of dollars to children's charities over the years. Something which belied the 'playboy' image the tabloid press and magazines perpetuated of him. Shortly after his death his family launched The Ayrton Senna Foundation, a charity set up to continue the good works for children that Ayrton Senna strove to keep so very secret from the rest of the world.

Fox News Contributors Blast O'Reilly For Not Challenging Coulter

During the October 18 edition of The O'Reilly Factor, Fox News contributors Bernie Goldberg and Jane Hall criticized host Bill O'Reilly for not challenging right-wing pundit Ann Coulter during her October 15 appearance on his program over comments she had made the previous week on CNBC's The Big Idea. Coulter had said to host Donny Deutsch that "we" Christians "just want Jews to be perfected." Goldberg stated: "[Y]ou got very passionate about the Catholic sacrilege in San Francisco, but when Ann Coulter made her comment about how everybody should be a Christian, including all the Jews, because they should be more perfected, man, I was waiting for you two to French kiss. I mean, it was -- you weren't the old Bill O'Reilly." O'Reilly claimed that he "ignored the controversy" because he "never debate[s] theology with a non-theologian, ever." O'Reilly then stated: "Ann Coulter is a commentator. She says some crazy thing that I think is unjustifiable. But why do I want to debate it with her? She doesn't have any credibility in the area," to which Hall replied: "But Bill, you said everybody should be challenged." O'Reilly responded: "I did challenge her in the interview, Jane. It wasn't a kissypoo interview." Goldberg countered: "Yes, it was."

Police said Kim Leblanc broke into a parked car overnight on Central Parkway, and the owner found him asleep inside and called police. Officers said Leblanc was not wearing any pants when they arrived. Investigators said Leblanc told them he had done drugs and believed that a leprechaun had let him into the car.
