Today, Amy Ridenour of Townhall is touting the idea that Michele Malkin has the right to dig into every private detail of your life if you take any money from the government. Watch out social security recipients. Watch out veterans. She's going to be putting all your personal information on the internet if you open your mouth in a way she doesn't approve. You give up your right to privacy --- even from shrieking harpy bloggers --- if you receive any money from the taxpayers. In fact, Amy Ridenour and Michele Malkin personally own you.

White House Spy Docs Show Surveillance Was Illegal
White House Spy Docs Show Surveillance Was Illegal, Senator Feingold Charges
WIRED
Senator Russell Feingold, (D-Wisconsin), who cast the only Senate vote against the Patriot Act and now sits on the Select Intelligence committee, seems to have looked at secret spying documents given by the White House to that committee and found that they do not exonerate the government's secret spying programs or the phone and internet companies that secretly aided them.
The White House seemingly provided the documents in exchange for legislation that would free its telecom partners from being sued by Americans for violating their privacy. The Senate Intelligence Committee is holding a closed meeting on the bill today.
According to a press release:
When the Committee considers this legislation today, I will also fight to reject immunity for anyone alleged to have cooperated with the Administration’s illegal warrantless wiretapping program. The documents made available by the White House for the first time this week only further demonstrate that the program was illegal and that there is no basis for granting retroactive immunity to those who allegedly cooperated. The one silver lining of the flawed FISA bill passed in August was that it had a 6-month expiration date. It would be shameful to miss this opportunity to fix the law.
Republicans Running Uphill
Wall Street Journal
The bad news keeps getting worse for the Republicans.
They have twice as many seats to defend as Democrats next year in the narrowly divided Senate. The Democratic presidential candidates are raising twice as much money as the Republicans. And now it looks like the party will even have trouble holding its ground in the House, which had been considered its best shot.
A dozen House Republicans have announced they won't stand for re-election next year, a wave of retirements that could grow and leave the party with fewer seats next year and perhaps well beyond. Even veterans in safe Republican seats are heading for the exits, including former Speaker Dennis Hastert. This summer he announced he would be leaving Congress at the end of this term, but yesterday aides said he would step down late this year or early next year.
The Republican congressional campaign committee is in debt, while the Democrats' committee said Wednesday it has raised $28 million. "Right now we're in a race with ankle weights," Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole, the committee's chairman, said this week.
Without campaign funds to spread around, the party is having trouble recruiting candidates. Meanwhile, the Iraq war has energized the liberal Democratic base and angered independents, who deserted the Republican Party in 2006 and seem unlikely to return........

Myanmar (Burma) embassies receiving "Panties for Peace"
Gives me the strength of 4 Air-Ono's
BANGKOK, Thailand -- Women in several countries have begun sending their panties to Myanmar embassies in a culturally insulting gesture of protest against the recent brutal crackdown there, a campaign supporter said Friday.
"It's an extremely strong message in Burmese and in all Southeast Asian culture,'' said Liz Hilton, who supports an activist group that launched the "Panties for Peace'' drive earlier this week.
The group, Lanna Action for Burma, says the country's superstitious generals, especially junta leader Gen. Than Shwe, also believe that contact with women's underwear saps them of power.
To widespread international condemnation, the military in Myanmar, also known as Burma, crushed mass anti-regime demonstrations recently and continues to hunt down and imprison those who took part.
Hilton said women in Thailand, Australia, Singapore, England and other European countries have started sending or delivering their underwear to Myanmar missions following informal coordination among activist organizations and individuals.

Senate panel OKs wiretap bill, telecom immunity
By Randall Mikkelsen
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate committee approved a bipartisan bill to tighten rules on government eavesdropping on terrorism suspects, but a Democratic presidential candidate said on Thursday he would try to block it.
The Senate Intelligence Committee voted 13-2 for the measure, which Chairman John Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, said strengthened national security and protected civil liberties.

but in answer to your premise. If you watch their body language in the last 9 months, Pelosi is looking haggard and slumped over and Reid is shrinking into a mouse as they cave issue after issue.
When Pelosi initially stood up and told Bush "to take a breath," I thought here we go. But she disappeared after that. Wha' HAPpened?
No one is liking what they are witnessing, particularly the "swing voters."
It's not that we want blood, we want reason, principle and conviction, and we don't want criminals and traitors stealing our rights and taxpayer money; don't want our children, and the rest of America for that matter going without health care; and don't want these thugs to terrorized US and the world day in and day out.
Look, I am an American, first, and a Democrat, second. I expect to compromise somewhat on ideals, because I understand some people have to take "baby steps," before they understand the full benefits, value and ramifications of any issue, but when they start and continue to take away our rights and what is good and has been good, the brakes have to be applied firmly to bring it a STOP.
The Democratic leadership in the past have been the real "grown-ups" throughout history, but, greed seems to have spilled over into the party making it permissive and complicit.
This worries me because a lot of damage has been done and it's getting worse each day. And the longer we let this go on and more we cave, the mad man on this side of the ocean gains and has power to start World War III and veto a health care bill for children, not to mention all the other acts along the way to prove he can do it and he is relevant.
Like a heard a caller on one of the talk shows say, if Democrats want the White House, they can get it by putting impeachment for Bush-Cheney back on the table.
Otherwise, criminals who can do US the most harm walk the halls of OUR GOVERNMENT.
I heard someone is calling for a General Strike November 7th.
It's time to show them WE ARE RELEVANT TOO!

Hillary Clinton's Bush Connection
Hillary Clinton's Bush Connection

NEW YORK, Oct 19, 2007
The Real News Project reports exclusively today that the engineer of George W. Bush's rescue from financial disaster -- a man who would propel Bush on the path to elective office -- has quietly moved into Hillary Clinton's inner circle of key financial backers. The engineer is longtime GOP backer Alan Quasha. His mysterious Harken Energy drew intense scrutiny from investigators and the media in the early 90's and again during Bush's first term because of its dubious financial practices and board members connected to the corrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI).
Sneaking control of the internet
Comcast blocks some Internet traffic By PETER SVENSSON, AP Technology Writer
1 hour, 2 minutes ago
NEW YORK - Comcast Corp. actively interferes with attempts by some of its high-speed Internet subscribers to share files online, a move that runs counter to the tradition of treating all types of Net traffic equally.
The interference, which The Associated Press confirmed through nationwide tests, is the most drastic example yet of data discrimination by a U.S. Internet service provider. It involves company computers masquerading as those of its users.
If widely applied by other ISPs, the technology Comcast is using would be a crippling blow to the BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella file-sharing networks. While these are mainly known as sources of copyright music, software and movies, BitTorrent in particular is emerging as a legitimate tool for quickly disseminating legal content.
The principle of equal treatment of traffic, called "Net Neutrality" by proponents, is not enshrined in law but supported by some regulations. Most of the debate around the issue has centered on tentative plans, now postponed, by large Internet carriers to offer preferential treatment of traffic from certain content providers for a fee.
Comcast's interference, on the other hand, appears to be an aggressive way of managing its network to keep file-sharing traffic from swallowing too much bandwidth and affecting the Internet speeds of other subscribers.

Mukasey won't give his views on method of interrogation
WASHINGTON - The confirmation hearing of Attorney General-designate Michael B. Mukasey turned contentious yesterday as Senate Democrats accused the nominee of dodging questions about a controversial interrogation technique and backtracking on statements he made about the obligations of the president to follow the law.In a testy final day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mukasey drew the wrath of some Democrats on the panel when he refused to say whether he believed that so-called waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning, constitutes torture that is prohibited by the Constitution.
Waterboarding has become a flash point in the debate over the limits of US interrogation policy since the launch of the Iraq war. And it was targeted by Congress in legislation in 2005 outlawing "cruel, inhuman, or degrading" punishment.
"I don't know what's involved in the technique," Mukasey said in an exchange with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island. "If waterboarding is torture, torture is not constitutional."
Said Whitehouse: "That's a massive hedge. I mean, it either is or it isn't." He gave a brief description of the practice, but Mukasey still declined to offer an opinion as to its lawfulness.

Hillary -- A Bush in Sheep's Clothing
In the coming presidential election, if you want true and lasting peace, any establishment candidate is out of the question for you.. The establishment - left as well as right - abhors peace.
It abhors giving up power. The establishment on each side is very adept at using rhetoric that pleases the ears of its respective constituents while doing the exact opposite of what people elect them for.
A vote for Hillary (or Obama, or Edwards) is a vote for the continuation of Bush-Cheney, ad nauseam!
It is a vote for Guantanamo Bay. A vote for spying on citizens. A vote for torture (under a different name, but still torture). A vote for never-ending military occupation of the middle east and other parts of the world.
A vote for lying politicians, and for an end to free speech and free association and the freedom of religion - all in the name of ‘national security.’

New N69N art!
Last year, BroadwayWorld premiered the stunning Broadway digital art of Norn Cutson. Now, Norn is proud to share his portrait of Karen Finley, performing Wake Up! at The Green Room at 45 Bleeker.
http://www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=22280
"Karen Finley, the most controversial woman in performance today, presents the New York Premiere of her latest work Wake Up!, an evening of two thematically related companion pieces. The first half is 'The Dreams of Laura Bush,' an illustrated dream journal of America's First Lady. Mrs. Bush's dreams alternate between the profound and the mundane and feature a cast of international celebs and politicians. 'Drawings' (also by Finley) are projected as a backdrop as the dreams unfold. Ultimately, the politics of the feminine passive power are uncovered with a blend humor and unleashed desire in this surreal piece. The second half is 'The Passion of Terri Schiavo.' Here, a live action ink painting becomes the abstracted soul projection of a culture obsessed with one woman's right to die, yet at the same time at war. In this work an oppositional narrative gives voice to both pro and con, family, stranger and society at large. It is an impassioned, personal look at issues of dignity in death and the value of life."

It took until early this morning, but, as expected, the Senate intelligence committee has passed its surveillance bill. Also as expected, retroactive legal immunity for telecommunications companies complying with President Bush's warrantless surveillance program is part of the bill. Not exactly as expected: it won't be the FISA Court that determines who complied with the program. It will be the attorney general:
The Senate bill would direct civil courts to dismiss lawsuits against telecommunications companies if the attorney general certifies that the company rendered assistance between Sept. 11, 2001, and Jan. 17, 2007, in response to a written request authorized by the president, to help detect or prevent an attack on the United States.
Suits also would be dismissed if the attorney general certifies that a company named in the case provided no assistance to the government. The public record would not reflect which certification was given to the court.
So you'll never know, if the Senate bill becomes law, if your phone company gave any communications material when the National Security Agency came calling without a warrant. Prediction: as of January 2009, Michael Mukasey can have any sinecure he likes with the telecom company of his choice. (Well, maybe not Qwest.)
In addition to the telecom provision, the bill also doesn't give the FISA Court any up-front role in foreign-targeted surveillance, unlike the Dems' now-stalled Restore Act in the House. It seems from this early report that the bill's major difference with the Protect America Act is that the FISA Court will have a larger role in reviewing the government's so-called minimization procedures -- that is, how NSA analysts redact identifying information of U.S. persons caught up in the surveillance web. For this, remarked Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), chairman of the intelligence committee, "FISA has a much larger role now."
Only Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) voted against the bill. The two holdouts got a proposal into the measure to "get a court order to eavesdrop on Americans wherever they are in the world," according to the AP. But that's unlikely to actually stay in the bill:

Democrat’s war barb condemned by GOP
WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Thursday failed in their effort to override President Bush’s veto of an expansion of a popular children’s health insurance program for low-income working families.
The Democratic majority fell 13 votes short of the two-thirds needed for a veto override, as House Republicans — including Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds of Clarence and Rep. Randy Kuhl of Hammondsport — stuck with the president, who called the bill too expensive.
After the 273-156 vote, both Democrats and Republicans vowed to try to negotiate for a bipartisan expansion of the 10-year-old program, which is set to expire in mid-November unless Congress acts.

The registered users that are here ALL the time, air-ono, tonid and Crank bait, all decide what we get to post here and what we get to see.
If they don't like what you're posting they simply go to tonid's chat room and talk smack about you. Then set off on a whining binge till they get rid of whoever they don't like.
Just like they did to Bridge and countless others.
I won't be coming to read or post anymore because of them. The Anon's don't bother me at all. It fact they are more trustworthy than people with fake names. It's ludicrous what they do everyday ALL DAY. Just like Anne Coulter, Rush limbaugh they hate for no reason. They just love to hate. They are the blue eyed people and all the Anon's are brown eyed people. Brown eyed people are to be feared and hated while the blue eyed people get a seat at the kings table.
Sam, you need to stop fucking around with people, and get serious about this or get rid of it all together. The register users you have here are control freaks that you helped create. Let me see if I understand your logical contruction?
A vote to override a veto that fails at 273-156 = Bush Not Lame.
A vote to override a veto that succeeds at 286-143 = Bush Lame.
Is that how it works for you? How does the newly released 24% approval rating for Bush factor in? Will it need to be 20% before it counts for anything?
How about the popular vote which barely tipped to Gore in 2000 and barely tipped to Bush in 2004?

obama writes a letter---
Obama: Fire Voting Rights Chief
By Paul Kiel - October 19, 2007, 10:45AM
In a letter today, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) urged the acting attorney general to fire voting rights section chief John Tanner. Citing Tanner's remarks earlier this month that "minorities don't become elderly the way white people do: They die first," Obama wrote that "Through his inexcusable comments, Mr. Tanner has clearly demonstrated that he possesses neither the character nor the judgment to be heading the Voting Rights Section." He concluded: "For that reason, I respectfully request that you remove him from his position."
Tanner made the comments as justification for his decision to overrule Justice Department staff attorneys and approve a Georgia voter ID law that was subsequently halted by a federal appeals court. Tanner made the novel argument that such laws actually discriminate against whites.

Zeek asked me a question he entitled 'mousetrap' and for the love of G-d I cannot find my response anywhere. Basically what I said in answer to his question was that it (his question) was not addressed in the statute I had posted, that if he was interested in prosecuting the president for international war crimes, that if I'm not mistaken, the President would have to be impeached first, and I found the form to do it. :-) Which I will again repost (from Michael Moore's website).

Dodd Will Filibuster Telecom Immunity Bill If Reid Brings It To Vote
By Greg Sargent - October 19, 2007, 11:59AM
Amping up his efforts to block the Senate FISA bill containing retroactive immunity for the telecom companies, Senator Chris Dodd's campaign says that he will filibuster the measure if the Dem Senate leadership tries to circumvent the hold he plans to put on the bill.
The Dodd campaign will reveal his plans to filibuster the measure in an email being sent out to supporters by the campaign's Web guru, Tim Tagaris. Election Central obtained an advance copy of the email.
The threatened filibuster, which comes a day after Dodd revealed to Election Central that he will place a hold on the bill, will place Dodd in direct confrontation with the Dem Senate leadership on a hugely contentious issue.

...But you [Sam] banned people who were here to help you all because you caved to peer pressure...
---------------
I am guessing that Sam Seder didn't find the pornographic picture helpful.
And here is a question for you: If I decide to spend my time surfing YouTube and posting dozens of randomly chosen embeds onto a thread on this blog, will you support my right to do so? At what point does this blog become undeniably usurped by me due to my filling the thread with whatever I choose?
Sam Seder has given anyone the ability to create and fill an Open Mic with his/her own posts. Anyone interested in the information and posts in a particular Open Mic can immerse him/herself as a participant in it.
It seems to me that the current blog thread is not the place to dominate with posts of pictures or embeds or repeated lists or the entirety of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible or an endless series of dots or a cut-and-paste of every previous post on the thread, all submitted by one individual, all of which has been done at one time or another. If filling a thread with your own choice of subject matter is important to you, create an Open Mic. My guess is that Sam provided the Open Mic option for people who want to control and limit a thread to a particular endeavor.
As for the "regulars" (which seems to imply that no one should participate here regularly or s/he will be negatively branded for doing so); they know the score. When toniD wanted to focus on the Abramoff scandal, she created her own blog dedicated to it and provided a link to it on Sam's blog. She could have spammed Sam's blog with Abramoff information instead, but she did not. Similarly, n69n has a blog dedicated to his endeavors for which he provided a link. Sunny J has a kazillion photographs for which he has provided a link. Sir Real has a blog. Alice has a few hundred blogs and at least one website. Fernando frequently creates Open Mic's. The list of "regulars" (and non-regulars) who use Internet locations other than the current thread to publish information of their own choosing is a long one.
Why do they publish large amounts of information elsewhere than on the current thread? Because they are not inconsiderate, obnoxious, domineering, spamming, disruptive assholes, that's why.
But you knew that.

=============
Now, the only mitigating circumstance is that perhaps you didn't see Sam's post, which he posted well before the citation of "naivete" you are presently making against him, a post which plainly gives the lie to the (yet another!) stupid claim you are presently making.
So. What may we adduce?
Perhaps you misheard what Sam said. Perhaps Sam misspoke, intending one thing and saying the opposite. We all do it.
Ah, but what does it mean?
If you misheard and charge Sam w/naivete, then you are an impetuous uncharitable asshole.
Perhaps you are aware of Sam's post but (shocked! I'm shocked!) dealing in bad faith. In which case you are a lying asshole.
Perhaps you are ignorant of Sam's post and simply being a person who plainly doesn't give Sam the benefit of the doubt for being more than a "naive tool of the left-wing loony bin" b/c you are a "centrist" demi-god who understands how the world (in unadulterated Garian flourish) REALLY works. Which makes you an mean-spirited bad-faith asshole.
It is difficult to formulate a scenario in which, no matter what the reason back of yer post, Gare, you don't come out stinkin' like an asshole.
So the only real question to be determined is, which genus of asshole are you?

The New Billionaire-Criminal Class
What do Brazil, Mexico, Russia and the USA have in common?
A rapidly expanding billionaire class.
Rampant poverty.
And a distressed middle class.
That's the take of Pulitzer prize-winning New York Times reporter David Cay Johnston in a soon to be released book--Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (And Stick You with the Bill) (Portfolio, December 2007).
In it, Johnston seeks to afflict the comfortable top one tenth of one percent of Americans--the 300,000 men, women and children who last year made more money than the bottom 150 million Americans.
Yes, we all have the right to vote and change this unbalanced state of affairs.
But political power in the United States is exercised by this narrow, rich segment of the population.

I'm sorry I offended you and others, and in turn, I forgive you for offending me. I like you. Please forgive me. 'kay?
As for your 'whore' comment, I've worked in places that politicians worked. Republicans. I didn't last there long.
What was really scary was Friday afternoons. On Fridays at 4:00 the bosses (all Republicans) would walk around to our offices, stick a bottle of Bud in our hands, and whisk us off to the head honchos office. Now, 1 thing about me you should know: When I drink, I talk. As in, whatever's in the brain, comes outta the mouth. And when you have a totally Republican-hating person like myself, drinking beer in an office surrounded by Republican bosses...well, suffice it to say that I got to dread Fridays. By the time we were through, my tongue was usually bleeding.
But anyway, back to the politician I worked with in that office. His views I found astonishing, backward, and quite ultra-conservative. He was lazy when it came to research. He relied on others to tell him what was what. He was a last-minute preparer when it came to presenting (I saw him present at a seminar once and he had a list of bills and where they were legislatively, but he had only begun preparing it at 11:00 p.m. the night before, was up til 4 a.m., and as a result was wiped for the presentation) But anyway, the gory part was when they would sit there and laugh over emailed pictures of catastrophically killed individuals. It was enough to make me want to puke. I seriously couldn't relate to these people at all, not even with my Republican upbringing. They were definitely of the frightening variety.
Yep, definitely hated Fridays.
I suppose I'd better go find some lunch.

And even tho' Al ain't rubbin' anyones nose in shit, people bein' people, they resent the livin' hell outta the livin'-breathin' object lesson that is Al Gore.
I mean, c'mon, the guy wins the Nobel fucking Peace Prize -- just think! an American! doing something on the international stage that we can actually be fucking proud of as Americans -- and what is the elite reaction?
a. Yawn.
or
b. Bad-faith exercises in false equivalence (gotta show *both sides* of the story that there's near-hunnerd percent consensus on in the scientific community!; one percent corporate-owned industry flaks disagree, so gotta give 'em equal time!)
or
c. Heathers-like theatre criticism masquerading as political commentary 'bout what this Nobel means for a presidential run
Askin' Al to run is like askin' Al to give up his freedom 'n happiness. It's a lot to axe of anyone.
So, no, I don't blame Gore. But you and I and many like us b'lieve that he's uniquely qualified to restore proportionality, good sense and fairness to America and to pull our country back from this psychotic stem-winder we is been forced on by the Bush years and really, by the whole "Contract on 'Murica" and "Reagan Revolution" etc.
Anyways, in the words of the drawlsy man from Hope:
"I feel yer pain."

Whadda WATB.
Blog acronym for Whiny Ass Titty-Baby. Primarily refers to right-wingers (or in this case, anonymous asshats) who routinely bully others but whine vociferously at the mildest criticism directed their way.
Ask someone not to do something to respect other's internet access capability and they do it more and say it's your fault... get a better internet provider. Then tell them that kinda behavior has gotten other people banned and they go blame everyone who simply told them it would get them banned. Suggest using the OpenMic area that's there for anyone and everyone to post what they want when they want, but, nooooooooooo... that's not good enough, either, because they already know that no one will even pay attention to whatever mundane YouTube shit they're gonna put there, so they just have to come back here and whine and bitch and moan and complain to Sam saying it's all... Just... NOT... FAIR!!!
Boo-fucking-hoo.
Again, cry me a river.

I understand that he is a human. I understand that he's already done enough. I understand he's still working on his cause. I understand that the media is ugly to him. I understand the vile manipulations of those that oppose his work. I get how big the task is. I get what kind of sacrifice he would have to make. I know I'm not strong enough to wear his shoes. He's still going to be a swell person either way. No doubt.
That's not who I think he is. I see him bigger than all of that. I see him too strong to cower to the right wing media manipulation. I see him smart enough to educate the retards who don't get what he is doing. I see him as a super human hero when it comes to his principles.
I may be up for a reality check..

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."
Third rate, schoolyard, unfunny, self-serving, self-aggrandizing
Three dems and three repubs are traveling by train to the 08 conventions.
At the station, the three repubs each buy tickets and watch as the three dems buy only a single ticket.
"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asked one of the three repubs.
"Watch and you'll see," answers one of the dems.
They all board the train. The repubs take their respective seats but all three dems cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The repubs saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the repubs decide to copy the dems on the return trip and save some money. When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the dems don't buy a ticket at all.
"How are you going to travel without a ticket," asks one perplexed repub.
"Watch and you'll see," says one of the dems. When they board the train the three dems cram into a toilet and the three repubs cram into another one nearby.
The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the dems leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the repubs are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please."
I still say...
Looking at the big picture, I wonder sometimes what the focus should be. What is the true force controlling what happens in the current day? Having visited other countries before, and seeing how weak the government is, how poor the people are, and how sad their living conditions are, while corporations prosper, I can't help but wonder if this is the future of America. Think about it for a second. Our bastions of hope are the Bill of Rights, the unions, and protections afforded us under law, such as the FDA which is supposed to protect our food and drugs, the Department of Labor which is supposed to protect our living conditions, the INS which is supposed to govern who lives here, etc. Each of these institutions are weakening, as we've seen proof of. New protections we're trying to implement, are vetoed.
My prediction for our future: Corporations versus Government, and the corporations are winning.
Everything is going by the wayside in the name of profits. I see it in my own neighborhood. Businesses opening with tax increment financing from the community that they use up, and then when the time comes for them to pay taxes, they move to another site, sometimes just across the street. But at the same time, the little guy is not escaping property taxes. I have a client in Indiana who pays $540 a month for real estate tax on his itty bitty house. He says people are being forced out of their homes because people can't afford the taxes. Eminent domain is the rule of the day as property values plummet and people are paid pennies on the dollar of what their properties are worth. My own has dropped to less than what I paid for it originally, never mind the second mortgage, and I'm much better off than many that I know.
Public education is increasingly becoming a joke, as schools are no longer adequately funded. Kids come out of college and are forced to take low paying jobs that don't even pay the student loans much less anything else, so they stay home longer. Under-educated parents are encouraged to homeschool their children.
The working man, less and less protected by the day, must work longer and harder to keep what he has, and has no idea what's going on with current events.
Meanwhile, the rich keep getting richer.
How do we stop these trends? So long as the corporations lobby the politicians, wining and dining them, feeding them with bullshit they're too *lazy* to research themselves to decide whether its right or wrong, to think for themselves....where are the intelligent politicians who actually care? And what party to they belong to? Do they even exist?
Frankly, I just don't know. I was hoping you all did...

theres about thirty thousand good groups of people who have effective organization and progressive values.
and none of them talk to each other. any solutions suggest themselves to you?
Solutions?
Well, a couple of possibilities come to mind;
1. Somehow manage to get a good one elected;
2. Lobby, wine, dine, and do some educating of our own - feed the legislative babes the good stuff.
The bad part is, how to afford either one.
What's the AlGoreRhythm for sorry?

Part a why I's ambivalent 'bout Gore's doin's is on account a I is felt the same way you does: If anyone knows how badly he's needed, it's Al Gore. Tho' he'd prolly play down his unique qualifications for bein' president, don't b'lieve in his heart of hearts he'd hamstring himself w/false modesty.
Think Gore knows he's the best-suited (viably electable) candidate for the job right now. I know you know alla that and we agrees.

My dad went to SF once - to try and find a dr. to save him after the local blood bank sorta did an 'oopsie' that wound up killing him later. I've never been there, although I have been through SD. The nicest and I do mean *nicest* people you'll ever meet, I found in SD. Loved it there.
Hope we meet too, but when I'm driving through the western states, I'm on my way to my annual Mexican volunteer house building project for the homeless. If you have a can of paint and a brush, next time I'm through, you're welcome to follow! I would offer ya a lift, but - lol - you'd be on toppa the tarp and bungee cords.
I'll admit, I tend to max out on the volunteering thing. But it's really fun. Good for the kiddos, too. Last year my youngest was teaching little Mexican boys how to fart with their armpits. Boys have their own universal language...

Exactly... There are strategies; however, they are current "thoughts" in "knowing one's enemy"...and is under much debate. I have been a life long DEM ... which I am now sickened by their pedestrian manners and weak yet cataclysmic actions. We The People have To Be Active ... I believe "the Net" is a way; however, now HS is looking even on the Net. The one positive thing I have heard, is if one has done actions in the past being on the "WEB" might be a safer place. I was to have started e-meets weeks ago. {No Time}......and........
These are just some "thoughts" but just letting you see a brief sight whilst I "fly by" ....... I will check back.

Be thankful that a bad joke bites with a minimum of bytes.
Solutions?
Another solution, SJ that I thought of but did not say, was to do what the corporations did, in the world trade summits. You say there's alot of organizations that are not talking to each other. Well, if the anti-violence people can get on TV and announce gang summits, and corporations can have trade summits, why can't these factions have their own summit?
Via the internet, because lord knows, if you had a physical meet, there'd be many who couldn't afford or have time to go.
An obvious solution, but it would have to be very well advertised.

It is nearly incomprehensible to me, but after months and months of haranguing the Democratic leadership to force the Republicans to stage a real filibuster and stand on the floor of the Senate reading the phone book and re-enacting Miss Mellie's death scene from "Gone With The Wind", they have finally decided to take our advice. Except for one teensy detail: they have decided to force Chris Dodd, Democratic presidential candidate, senior member of the Senate and Democrat to stage a real filibuster because he has the temerity to defend the constitution.
Dodd is willing to do it if he has to:
Are you willing to go to the mat to restore the Constitution?

to stage a real filibuster

Great hearing you on the Young Turks this morning Sam. I almost fell off my seat when you said "shucks" on the After Game show! Major points for taking the extra time. Also great critique of Bill Clinton and his policies or lack of. I can't believe you didn't praise the sacred cow. In regards to NAFTA and the general welfare of Mexico, I'd be interested in some studies/articles that argue in your behalf. Hope to see more of you!
