'Many in the US Military

'Many in the US Military Think Bush and Cheney Are Out of Control'

In an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE, the Amsterdam-based military historian Gabriel Kolko talks about the prospect of war with Iran and argues that many in the US military now view the White House as being 'out of control.'

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Kolko, editorials in US papers like the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard and the National Review are pushing for military action against Iran. How does the leadership in the US military view such a conflict?

Gabriel Kolko: The American military is stretched to the limit. They are losing both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Everything is being sacrificed for these wars: money, equipment in Asia, American military power globally, etc. Where and how can they fight yet another? The Pentagon is short of money for procurement, and that is what so many people in the military bureaucracy live for. The situation will be far worse in the event of a war with Iran.

Many in the American military have learned the fundamental dilemma of modern warfare: More money and better weapons don't mean that you win. IEDs, which cost so little to make, are defeating a military which spends billions of dollars per month. IEDS are so adaptable that each new strategy developed by the United States to counter them is answered by the Iraqi insurgents. The Israelis were also never quite able to counter IEDs. One report quotes an Israeli military engineer who said the Israeli answer to IEDs was frequently the use of armored bulldozers to effectively rip away the top 18 inches of pavement and earth where explosive devices might be hidden. This is fantastic, as the cost of winning means destroying roads, which form the basis of a modern economy.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Are people in the Pentagon getting nervous about how influential voices in the White House continue to push for conflict with Iran?

Kolko: Many in the US military think Bush and Cheney are out of control. They are rebelling against Bush and Cheney. Washington Post reporter Dana Priest recently said in an interview that she believed the US military would revolt and refuse to fly missions against Iran if the White House issued such orders.

Randi Rhodes is the Victim of a Violent Attack

Randi Rhodes was mugged on Sunday night on 39th Street and Park Ave, nearby her Manhattan apartment, while she was walking her dog Simon.

According to Air America Radio late night host Jon Elliott, Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week. At of late Monday night we have not able to locate any press accounts of the attack and nothing has been posted on the AAR website.

Several liberal blogs, including the Randi Rhodes Message Board and Democratic Underground have logged numerous posts on the Rhodes mugging with most of the posters expressing concern about the condition of the popular lib talker.

Morning talk host, Lionel filled in for Rhodes on Monday, but did not say anything about why she wasn’t on hand to do her show. The Randi Rhodes board reports that Sam Seder, who does a Sunday afternoon show for AAR, will be filling on Tuesday and Wednesday.

WILL THE GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES CONDEMN COULTER?

NJDC CHALLENGES REPUBLICANS TO TAKE A STAND PRIOR TO ADDRESSING JEWISH AUDIENCE ON TUESDAY

For Immediate Release
October 15, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, with all the leading GOP presidential candidates slated to address a Jewish Republican audience on Tuesday (10/16), the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) challenged Republican presidential candidates to publicly condemn Ann Coulter for her anti-Jewish comments and reject any assistance from Ms. Coulter to the RNC or their campaigns.

“Paying lip service to a Jewish audience is all well and good, but Jewish voters want to know from the Republican candidates: will you have the courage to stand with us by criticizing one of your most vocal supporters?” said NJDC Executive Director Ira N. Forman. “Several GOP leaders were quick to condemn MoveOn.org, but that was easy for them because they are all at odds with MoveOn politically. Will they have the guts to condemn Ann Coulter, a prominent political ally?”

The GOP presidential frontrunners – Mayor Giuliani, Senators McCain and Thompson, and Governor Romney – have all publicly condemned MoveOn.org for running the infamous “General Betray-us” advertisement.

While Republicans are reluctant to criticize their own, Democrats have proven willing to break with fellow party members when necessary. President Clinton, Speaker Pelosi, and DNC Chairman Howard Dean, for instance, strongly condemned former President Jimmy Carter’s book about the Arab-Israeli conflict. In a further example, the House Democratic Leadership recently condemned comments by Democratic Congressman Jim Moran which implied that AIPAC pushed strongly for the Iraq War. NJDC criticized the Carter book and Moran comments as well.

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."

Rightwingers are some sick bastards...

I am still having a problem with this not being reported in all the news outlets. It seems to be confined to a few websites and on the show of the loser who filled in for her. Did she really get attacked (and if so, why no news), Is this a publicity stunt? Did she have an abortion that got botched and she needs to be home a few days and the mugging sounded like a better excuse?

I just don’t know. If she was truly attacked then I pray she is OK. If not, just what is going on?

Jesus. You pray she is OK, but, she probably just had an abortion go awry.

Sickening.

Marc (or Sammer, tell Marc)

Marc: You need two notebooks; one personal, one for business (tax write-off all in the 1st year, too). Then once you get the business box set up correctly, don't fuck w/ it. You can then load all the porn you want on your personal box. *snark*

Since you're on the road so much, google "free wifi hot spots" to get a current list. If you're so inclined, the national wireless broadband service prices are coming down, too. Coverage is getting pretty universal in most lg & medium cities nationally. Most, if not all, of the costs related to this could be written off as business expenses.

Jon Elliot reported that last night.
-------------------
It's interesting that a pro-pistol poster weighed-in by advising us that the outcome would have been different if Rhodes was carrying a concealed firearm.

I don't know what happened and I am not implying that I know what happened. I only know of the reporting that a woman who was walking her dog while wearing a running suit was mugged and lost some teeth.

My guess is that she was surprised, blind-sided, possibly clothes-lined. Otherwise, she would have run away (she was already running or walking and wearing the proper gear).

If she was clothes-lined and lost teeth in the scuffle, it is unlikely that she could have successfully pulled a weapon...and if she DID, it is just as likely that her attacker would disarm her as it is that she would shoot him.

If she was unable to protect her teeth, it is unlikely that she would have been able to protect her concealed weapon.

It appears that the Pentagon came very close to giving the military a 'video game' that implied that non-Christians should "convert or die", although why they changed their mind or whether they did is uncertain.

Maybe that's why Ramzi Yousef now professes Christianity. "Pledge allegiance to the flag, whatever flag they offer." The Christian flag?

McConnell Aide Admits He

McConnell Aide Admits He Pushed Baseless Smears, But Lies About His Supposed ‘Skepticism’
Last week, ThinkProgress reported that Don Stewart, the communications director for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), had sent an e-mail to reporters encouraging them to cover the right-wing campaign to smear 12-year old Graeme Frost and his family. In the e-mail, Stewart claimed that research by conservative bloggers proved that Democrats did a bad job “vetting this family.”

Stewart acknowledged yesterday in an interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal that he “pointed out” the smear campaign to reporters. Stewart comically asserts that he “raised skepticism as to the content” of the right-wing bloggers’ research:

He explained yesterday that such e-mails are “part of regular conversation with reporters.”

“I pointed out something that had been in the blogs for a couple of days and had been of increasing interest, but I also raised skepticism as to the content,” Stewart said.

Though Stewart did eventually send subsequent e-mails to reporters, telling them “there’s no story there” and that “the family is legit,” his initial e-mail was anything but skeptical. In fact, he trumpeted the bloggers’ unfounded smears and used them to attack Democrats:

Bloggers have done a little digging and turned up that the Dad owns his own business (and the building it’s in), seems to have some commercial rental income and Graeme and a sister go to a private school that, according to its website, costs about $20k a year for each kid despite the news profiles reporting a family income of only $45k for the Frosts. Could the Dems really have done that bad of a job vetting this family?

The only “skepticism” Stewart showed in his original email was a veiled partisan attack that came in the form of a question. He never “vetted” the research he was propagating to reporters.

As Greg Sargent notes, “when Michelle Malkin pointed her finger at the Frosts and started howling, McConnell’s staff immediately joined in the fun — that is, until they realized that they had a big dud on their hands.”

UPDATE: Stewart also wrote a letter to the editor today further muddling his role in smearing of the Frost family. BluegrassRoots debunks it here.

U.S. not ‘tactically’

U.S. not ‘tactically’ safer as a result of Iraq war. The director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Scott Redd, tells NBC News that, “in the short term,” the Iraq war “probably” has created a “giant recruiting tool” for terrorists. In response to a question about whether the US is generally safer after having invaded Iraq, “tactically, probably not,” Redd responded. “Strategically, we’ll wait and see.”

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Counterterrorism_Dir._US_probably_not_safe...

Fearing his re-election

Fearing his re-election chances are dim, the House GOP leadership “has held private discussions with Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) in an effort to convince him to retire.” But Doolittle, who is under federal investigation, is “promising to run for re-election.”

India freezes U.S. nuclear deal

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday called off a bilateral nuclear co-operation agreement reached with the United States.

"The prime minister explained to President Bush that certain difficulties have arisen with respect to operationalization of the India-U.S. civil nuclear co-operation agreement," the office of the Indian leader said.

The nuclear co-operation pact, which would allow India to import U.S. nuclear fuel and technology for the first time since the 1970s, was announced during U.S. President George Bush's visit to India last year.

For one company, FISA wiretaps carry a $1K pricetag

Although the scope of surveillance conducted under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act remains shrouded in secrecy, newly disclosed documents show the costs one company charges the government to eavesdrop on customers.

Comcast, which is among the nation's largest telecommunication companies, charges $1,000 to install a FISA wiretap and $750 for each additional month authorities want to keep an eye on suspects, according to the company's Handbook for Law Enforcement. Secrecy News obtained the document and published it Monday.

"I was actually surprised that this was such a routine transaction that it would have a set fee," said Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists' Project on Government Secrecy.

Aftergood, who runs the Secrecy News blog, told RAW STORY that the Comcast document was the only one he has seen outlining wiretap procedures and costs, so he couldn't compare Comcast's fees with those charged by other telecoms.

Eight times as many Republicans fleeing Congress than Democrats

The announcements seem so frequent they no longer appear to be news -- yet another Republican congressmember is planning retirement. Last night, news broke that yet another Republican wouldn't run for reelection: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, of Texas.

All told, 17 Republican lawmakers have their sights on Capitol Hill's exit signs.

Market is down, Oil is up.....

Oil hits new record on supply concerns By JOHN WILEN, AP Business Writer
52 minutes ago

Oil futures rallied to a new record over $88 a barrel Tuesday on concerns about disruptions in Middle Eastern crude supplies and a growing view that domestic supplies aren't sufficient to meet fourth-quarter demand.

Traders are concerned that a Turkish incursion into Iraq in search of Kurdish rebels could disrupt crude supplies from northern Iraq.

"Whenever there is any escalation in political tensions in the Middle East, oil markets become concerned," said David Moore, a commodity strategist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney. "There is production and there are pipelines that people worry may be affected if there are any issues in Iraq."

Turkey's prime minister on Tuesday said Monday's decision to ask Parliament for permission to pursue Kurdish rebels into Iraq was not a sign Turkish forces will act immediately.

The Middle East tensions add to supply concerns that have been stoked in recent days by reports from the Energy Department, the International Energy Agency and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries suggesting oil supplies are flat or falling as demand is growing.

Light, sweet crude for November delivery rose $1.94 to $87.07 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Tuesday after rising as high as $88.20 earlier, a trading record.

Sarkozy split fuelled by absence from state trip

By Henry Samuel in Paris
Last Updated: 2:42am BST 16/10/2007

Cécilia Sarkozy, France's first lady, will not accompany her husband, president Nicolas Sarkozy, on a state visit to Morocco next week, an Elysée spokesman said yesterday, fanning speculation of their impending split.

Sarkozy split fuelled by absence from state trip
Cécilia Sarkozy did not accompany her husband on his last trip to Bulgaria

Mr Sarkozy is due to pay a state visit to Morocco next week but his wife – a 49-year-old former model with whom he has a 10-year-old son – will break with protocol, which provides for the president's wife to take part in such high-level trips. "As far as I know, the wife of the president will not be on the trip," said David Martinon, the presidential spokesman. Mr Sarkozy is due to visit Morocco on Oct 22 and 23.

Leahy on Mukasey: "I Like Him"
By Paul Kiel - October 16, 2007, 12:59PM

If there were any doubt remaining that Michael Mukasey will fly through the confirmation process, it's been dispelled.

Today, Mukasey met privately with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) as a prelude to tomorrow's confirmation hearing. It went well. From the AP:

Attorney General-designate Michael Mukasey is headed for swift approval with scant objections, the powerful Democrat who will chair his confirmation hearings said Tuesday.

"I would expect him to be confirmed," Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., told reporters after meeting with the former federal judge. "I like him."...

Leahy told reporters that during private meetings and an exchange of letters, Mukasey has provided acceptable answers to key questions, such as whether he would operate the Justice Department independent of the White House. Gonzales was accused of being "the president's lawyer" and allowing his deputies to make some hiring decisions based on political affiliation, a violation of law.

AMY GOODMAN: You’re very optimistic.

YOKO ONO: Well, you know, most people say, “Oh, you're so optimistic. I mean, what’s wrong with you?” I’m not really that optimistic. I am trying to make us survive. And in the course of survival, we don’t have the luxury to be negative. That’s a luxury that we can’t afford. And we just have to do what we can do. And I think that instead of getting so upset with some people, you know, or some countries which are doing this, doing that -- “How dare they,” whatever -- I think we should just do what we can do.

CBS’ Logan: ‘We’re

CBS’ Logan: ‘We’re doing extremely badly’ in Iraq. Last night on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CBS News’ Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan was asked, “How are we doing” in Iraq? Logan responded, “It’s much worse than the picture, the image we even have of Iraq”:

We’re doing extremely badly, from my point of view. I was asked if I felt any guilt for the fact that the world has an impression of the war in Iraq as being very bad and going very wrong. And I said I really don’t because I can’t imagine the last time anyone saw a dead American soldier. We’ve hidden that from view. Nobody knows what that looks like, and I’ve seen plenty of it. It’s much worse than the picture, the image we even have of Iraq.

Watch it:

In light of a recent Washington Post story reporting that the U.S. had “crippled” al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), Logan explained that AQI and al Qaeda are “two entirely different things.” “To say that we have crippled them is suicide,” she stated.

Putin and Iran

16 Oct 2007 12:22 pm

Vladimir Putin's warnings against military action against Iran deserve to be taken very seriously. Since we're not contemplating actually conquering Iran and trying to occupy its territory, people need to understand that the post-strike diplomatic environment is going to be much more important to the future of the Iranian nuclear program than is any damage that bombing Iran with our on-the-table options might or might not do. If Russia decides to just send some scientists with schematics and materiel over to Iran and show them how to build a nuclear bomb, then -- bam -- nuclear bomb.

Conversely, at the moment not only is Iran under some diplomatic pressure to stop short of weaponizing, many countries around the world are taking direct measures to prevent the Iranians from just easily going and buying the stuff they need. Insofar as an unprovoked American military attack convinces other countries that the real dangerous lunatics live in DC rather than Teheran, countries around the world could cut back on their vigilance and make it much easier for an Iranian nuclear program to succeed.

The point is that when people talking about the Iranians being such-and-such time period away, or some bombing effort taking them back x number of years, they're talking as if progress toward a nuclear weapon proceeds at a constant pace. In practice, one of the factors that determines how quickly you can proceed is the international context. Right now, things are pretty tricky for Iranian nuclear scientists. Military action that doesn't reflect a firm, UN-backed consensus grounded in some reasonable interpretation of international law (military action that does reflect such a consensus seems very, very unlikely but in principle it could happen) could dramatically alter that.

Don't believe in toture, make an exception for Maulkin!

Right Wing Gleefully Smears Two Yr-Old SCHIP Recipient Bethany Wilkerson
Yesterday, TrueMajorityAction released an ad of 2-year old Bethany Wilkerson, who was born with a serious heart problem and received health insurance through the SCHIP program. Today, the Wilkerson family will appear with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to rally support for increased funding of the SCHIP program.

Like the Frost family, the Wilkerson family has already become the subject of right-wing attacks. Michelle Malkin — whose baseless smear campaign against 12-year old Graeme Frost was deemed too bogus for even Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — is now trying to rally the right against Bethany.

Heralding the arrival of a “new toddler-aged human shield,” Malkin writes that “the Wilkersons made a choice” — a seeming reference to the fact that Malkin now believes she has the license to attack the Wilkersons for their public support of SCHIP. “We need more ‘partisan bickering,’ not less,” added Malkin.

Malkin’s not alone in her rage. In a piece entitled “Meet the New Frosts, Same As the Old Frosts,” the National Review’s Mark Hemingway attacks the Wilkersons as irresponsible parents:

While the debate around the Frost family at least initially centered around their relative wealth, the issue really at hand is one of bad behavior. […]

For Dara and Brian Wilkerson, the fact that they don’t have health insurance is less about falling through the cracks than the decisions they’ve made.

Hemingway claims that Bethany’s mother, Dara, “voluntarily left a job at a country club that had good health insurance, because the situation was ‘unmanageable,’” to “take a job at a restaurant with no health insurance.” He mourns the fact that the Wilkersons “went on to have a baby anyway.”

Dara Wilkerson released this statement responding to the attacks on her choice of employment:

We have seen the statement about my previous employment and here is what we have to say: I left my previous place of employment years before Bethany became part of our lives. I am a hard working woman. I have worked at Snappers Sea Grill for over 6 years. It is a good work environment and I am a loyal employee. My husband and I were blessed with Bethany two years ago and we are even more blessed to still have her with us today.

So according to this “pro-life” right-wing logic, the Wilkersons should have sacrificed having a daughter in order to stay in an “unmanageable” job.

If you've ever emailed me, the government has the right to your email records

TPMmuckraker asks the following question today: "Quick, has anyone you know emailed anyone who's called Pakistan lately?"

The question reflects the Bush administration's new standard for permitting the federal government to illegally spy on your phone records. If you have been in contact with Party X, and Party X has been in contact with Party Y, and Party Y has contacted anyone in Pakistan, then any conversations, email or phone or otherwise, that you've had with Party X can be turned over to the government by our friendly phone companies in violation of federal law.

Let me put this in simpler terms. Anyone of you who have ever emailed me, or chatted with me by phone, may very well have had your name included in the government's domestic spying sweep.

Why? Because a good friend of mine is Pakistani-American, and she regularly chats with folks in Pakistan. And under our government's new standard, if you chat with me, and I chat with someone who chats with someone in Pakistan, then the government has the right to look at the details of your communication with me.

Let's see, whose specific phone and email records that would cover in just the past couple of days? My emails and phone calls with folks at...

- CNN, ABC, NBC (including the folks at Hardball), TIME, Newsweek, National Journal, Salon, Newsmax
- Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post
- Harry Reid's office
- Nancy Pelosi's office
- The House Committee on Homeland Security
- John Edwards', Hillary's, and Obama's campaigns
- The DCCC and DSCC
- Folks at both HRC and NGLTF, Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Media Matters
- A number of big PR firms in town, including Fleishman-Hillard and Edelman
- The good folks at MTV, MySpace, Amazon.com, YouTube, Google, Macworld
- My friends and family around the country and abroad
- Our friends at DailyKos, ThinkProgress, TPM and lots of other blogs
- Every single one of you who has ever emailed me

Are you starting to get the picture as to what exactly the Senate Democrats are about to approve by law?
