Mark Green does something I like...
Mark Green, president of Air America Radio, is either a marketing and publicity genius, or is just plain nuts.
Either description could be applied to the network's recent decision to add a show to their weekend lineup, Freethought Radio. It's referred to as "the first nationally broadcast radio show from the secular point of view." The weekly one hour show, which premiered on the network last weekend and airs on Saturdays from 1-2PM, is hosted by Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The objective of the show is to offer programming for nonreligious listeners, and to "counter the religious right domination of our public airwaves." Segments of the show include "Theocracy Alert," Dan's "Pagan Pulpit," "Freethinkers Almanac," and music and interviews with authors and activists.
Yes, this is a show by and for atheists, agnostics and nontheists.

Feingold 'Troubled' by Hayden-Helgerson Feud
By Spencer Ackerman - October 12, 2007, 4:31PM
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) beats Senate intelligence committee chairman John Rockefeller in the race to comment first on CIA Director Michael Hayden's investigation of Inspector General John Helgerson!
"I am troubled by the New York Times story indicating that the CIA's leadership may be interfering with the oversight work of its own inspector general. The story raises alarming new questions about this administration’s willingness to submit to critical oversight. During this administration, we’ve seen an illegal warrantless wiretapping program, demands for dangerous new surveillance powers, and a CIA detention and interrogation program that is legally dubious and morally indefensible. Independent oversight of the intelligence community has never been more important, and inspectors general must be able to conduct their important work without interference or politicization."

Something to be Proud of
I was glad to read this article headline today - that, according to Vanity Fair, of the 100 most powerful people in the world, to include bankers, media moguls, publishers, etc., over half are Jewish. Working for a wonderful Jewish person for now the last nearly 8 years, I take comfort in hearing things like this. My boss is tops, and he and his family and friends have always treated me very well, even though I'm a Gentile. It's a wonderful thing. And it's really neat how I can't schedule anything late on Fridays so he can have dinner with his parents and the family, and I take it that this is something all good Jews do. I really admire that.

And I agree about not wanting to be tied to your computer. But for me, since I have been living in this hotel suite for so long now, my computer is not only never out of earshot, it is also many times the only place I can watch/hear many shows since the cable channels are very limited. Hi Nando

Middle School dance night. Got through it though!
ShelaghC - Thanks
Thanks - I appreciate your good thoughts.
I have been here for 22 months now, so I have got my full DVD system set up on the hotel TV and an extra VCR that we found in my mom's house that was still in the box hooked up as well so I can tape anything that I might want to catch at a later date - such as Moyers or Bill Maher from tonight since Sammy was on. I have all the hotel movies and Netflix and the hotel even goes and rents movies for you here - they also do my grocery shopping and there is the built in housekeeping, so its not as bad as it could be - its like living in a full service condo with concierge service or similar...just not my actual "home" and for most of the time it was OK, but my house was supposed to be started let alone partly done by now and I was supposed to be in by the middle/end of December and thats not going to happen at this point , so its all just starting to get to me...but I know I am very lucky to have a place to live and to know that even with the delays I will eventually have my new house where the old one was.... compared to what happened in Katrina, or even in all the tornados that happen every year, I really have nothing to complain about....and I try very hard to remember to keep things in the right perspective...but I am only human and some days - like today, I get a bit cranky. But, tomorrow will be a better day. I am going to climb into bed soon with the kitties and stay there until I feel like getting up tomorrow - whatever time that will be. :)
Thanks again - have a great weekend.

And finally we come to the man who surely claims the prize as WaPo’s most pathetic shill, Howard Kurtz. He masquerades as a media critic. In fact he’s a media buffoon. But beyond that, Kurtz is one of the dumbest figures in print or on the airwaves. That all came home brilliantly last night as Kurtz made his appearance on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show. I was amazed both with Stewart and Kurtz. Together with his staff, Stewart delivered a satirically brilliant introduction, with videos, which effectively eviscerated Kurtz’s core message about the war and its packaging. Stewart also delivered a series of precise, well thought-through questions to which Kurtz gave a series of non-responses. And on point after point, Stewart challenged Kurtz’s facile and false conclusions. Kurtz was hung up to dry. And he didn’t even understand what was happening. It does in my mind come down to Broder, Ignatius and Kurtz. But I’m giving top honors to Howard: the man who’s done the most to destroy WaPo’s reputation in the arena of opinion.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I ’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

The last KLSD rallying cry !
Friday, October 12, 2007
Will they or won't they?
That's been the mantra from KLSD and Clear Channel San Diego for almost two months now, as they've been keeping their devoted listeners dangling as they have bickered internally about whether to ditch the whole liberal talk thing and just do the FOX Sports thing instead. Rumor has it, we should know for certain what will happen by next Monday, October 15.
But do they really know yet whether or not Air America et. al., stays?
In one last hurrah, KLSD listeners are organizing one "last big rally" in support of the format. Like the previous two rallies, which packed the parking lot of the station, this one will start at 6:30 this morning, San Diego time, with a bagpiper-led march to the station's studios. Most of it should get under way by 8:30.
Didn't know about it? KLSD's web site is promoting it too. Now wait a minute! Why are they hawking a protest rally against their station management? This question has left me puzzled too, and even made me question the whole 'flip to sports' thing as a rather crass publicity stunt. But that's Clear Channel for ya, and while the company is pretty damn large, they're also at times pretty damn weird. But hey, there's a rally this morning. And if nothing else, attendees can at least get some fresh air (if that's to be found in San Diego) and make some new friends.
But the underlying question, the elephant in the room, is this: Will they or won't they?

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 12, 2007) — Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) said today’s United Press International (UPI) report on Hunt Oil raises more questions worthy of Congressional investigations and that he will introduce legislation to ban U.S. oil companies from operating in Iraq.

Gore Wins the Norwegian Primary
By John Nichols, The Nation
Having now won the Norwegian Primary, it is reasonable to ask why Al Gore would want to slog his way through the snows of New Hampshire.
But the inconvenient truth is that never has the man who might yet be president needed to more seriously consider his personal legacy - not to mention the small matter of his potential to make the world anew - than now.

Chairmen Call for “Honest Answers” about Corruption in Iraq
WASHINGTON, DC — Today House Chairmen Waxman, Lantos, Skelton, and Obey wrote to the Secretary of State to express their concern about endemic corruption in Iraq and the refusal of State Department officials to answer basic questions about the impact of corruption within the Maliki government on the chances of success in Iraq. The text of the letter follows:

Afghanistan "is going down
Afghanistan "is going down fast"

From The Australian:
THE bloodshed in Afghanistan has reached levels not seen since the 2001 invasion as anger at bungling by an ineffective Government in Kabul and its foreign backers stokes support for the Taliban and other extremist groups.
The death of Trooper David Pearce underlines the rising dangers for Australia's 1000 soldiers in Afghanistan, most of them deployed in the Taliban's southern heartland -- a region some of Canberra's NATO allies consider too dangerous to fight in.
"This place can only go up or down, and it's going down fast, which is something the international community simply will not understand," said a security analyst who has been working in and out of Afghanistan for 30 years.
Almost six years after the hardline Islamist Taliban were ousted, their insurgency is gaining strength, fuelled by resentment at NATO bombing of civilians, billions of dollars of wasted aid, a lack of jobs and record crops of opium, the raw material for heroin.
The fighting is spreading to places once relatively safe, including the capital and the western and northern parts of the country.

The Independent: The Green Giant and An Oscar. The Nobel Peace Prize. Now, can Al Gore win the presidency?
Guardian:
Al Gore wins Nobel peace prize. And this time, no one can take it away from him
Times of London: Al Gore’s Nobel peace prize is a rebuke for the President, claim Democrats
Le Figaro: La croisade verte d'Al Gore, prix Nobel de la paix
And an interesting comparison between the the paths of Bush and Gore since 2000 from the Post. What a different country and better place the US would have been with a Gore administration. The Republicans are so full of sour grapes, obviously touchy about the massive failures and lies that will define the GOP for years to come. Gore was so right about so many things and that's something the GOP or the Supreme Court can never take away.
What other good articles is everyone seeing out there from around the world?

Conyers Issues Statement on News Reports Questioning DoJ's 2004
Presidential Election 'Investigation' in Ohio..
*Hopefuly, not just More Passionate Letters !*
Chairman of House Judiciary Committee is Troubled by Voting Chief John Tanner's 'Justification' for Inequal Treatment of Black Voters in Buckeye State
Plans to Address Matter 'Head On' in Upcoming Hearings...
Following up our earlier story today, the Chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers (D-MI), has now released a statement in response to TPM Muckraker's story today with on-the-record comments from former DoJ officials questioning the seriousness (or lack thereof) of the "investigation" by the Department's chief Voting official, John Tanner, into the reported racial disparities at polling places during the 2004 Presidential Election in Ohio.
In Conyers's statement (posted in full at the end of this article) he says he's "concerned about the extreme lengths Mr. Tanner went to in order to justify the reasons African-Americans were not treated equally in the 2004 Ohio election," and charges that "The Department of Justice – since the Voting Rights Act of 1965 – has a responsibility to thoroughly investigate allegations of voter suppression and discrimination, like those made in Ohio in 2004."
Tanner's "investigation" at the time had, remarkably, charged that the reason for long lines in minority areas of Ohio was because minorities chose to vote late in the afternoon, instead of earlier in the day as white voters did.
Essentially, as RAW STORY's coverage this afternoon says, "black voters caused their own lines in the Ohio 2004 vote," if Tanner is to be believed.

The day the Republicans
The day the Republicans smeared a twelve year old boy

Krugman does a great job looking about how the Senate Republican leader joined right-wing bloggers and Rush Limbaugh in trying to smear a sick 12 year old boy.
Soon after the radio address, right-wing bloggers began insisting that the Frosts must be affluent because Graeme and his sister attend private schools (they’re on scholarship), because they have a house in a neighborhood where some houses are now expensive (the Frosts bought their house for $55,000 in 1990 when the neighborhood was rundown and considered dangerous) and because Mr. Frost owns a business (it was dissolved in 1999).
You might be tempted to say that bloggers make unfounded accusations all the time. But we’re not talking about some obscure fringe. The charge was led by Michelle Malkin, who according to Technorati has the most-trafficked right-wing blog on the Internet, and in addition to blogging has a nationally syndicated column, writes for National Review and is a frequent guest on Fox News.
The attack on Graeme’s family was also quickly picked up by Rush Limbaugh, who is so important a player in the right-wing universe that he has had multiple exclusive interviews with Vice President Dick Cheney.
And G.O.P. politicians were eager to join in the smear. The New York Times reported that Republicans in Congress “were gearing up to use Graeme as evidence that Democrats have overexpanded the health program to include families wealthy enough to afford private insurance” but had “backed off” as the case fell apart.
In fact, however, Republicans had already made their first move: an e-mail message from the office of Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, sent to reporters and obtained by the Web site Think Progress, repeated the smears against the Frosts and asked: “Could the Dems really have done that bad of a job vetting this family?”
And the attempt to spin the media worked, to some extent: despite reporting that has thoroughly debunked the smears, a CNN report yesterday suggested that the Democrats had made “a tactical error in holding up Graeme as their poster child,” and closely echoed the language of the e-mail from Mr. McConnell’s office.

Former DoJ Staffer on Disparity of Voting Machines in Minority Precincts: 'We Didn't Try Very Hard to Find Out'
Still more folks are beginning to notice our disturbing Monday exclusive, including both the Washington Post and the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, which will be taking up the matter, we are told (and a report at TPM Muckraker confirms), in upcoming sub-committee hearings.
While many blogs had covered our report, the MSM had yet to ring in until today's report from Al Kamen at Washington Post, who picks up on our coverage of the recent, controversial, video-taped comments by John Tanner, the Chief of the Voting Rights section of the DoJ's Civil Rights division.
Tanner said last Friday in Los Angeles at the National Latino Congreso --- and our own Alan Breslauer was there with video camera and tough questions --- that while it's a "shame" that the elderly may be disenfranchised by restrictive Photo ID laws at the polling place, minorities needn't worry, as they are less disenfranchised, if only because "minorities don't become elderly. The way that white people do. They die first."
The argument Tanner was making implied that, somehow, it's white voters who are more disenfranchised by such restrictions, rather than black voters. And, despite actual evidence to the contrary, somehow, that's all okay with him in any case, even as the GOP pushes for more such laws all across the country, with a Presidential Election year upon us, little if any evidence of actual voter fraud that would be deterred by such laws, and some 10 to 30 million legally registered American voters (most, coincidentally, Democratic-leaning) who might well be disenfranchised in the bargain.
That from, yes, the Bush DoJ's Civil Rights division Voting Section chief.
(As Sammy would say, Astonishing !)

Well, the bets are placed and the race is on to see how many different tricks Al Gore has up his expensively monogrammed sleeve. Of course, you knew that the entire Global Warming shtick is a cleverly concealing ruse designed to divert your attention long enough for fat Albert to fill his bank account in the Cayman's, right?
Tipper's got a blood rock Gare-an-teed to represent one-hundred dead Africans for every caret. Their bouncing baby boy, Al Gore III, lives in a dad-financed abode in Malibu filled with hemp products...and I ain't talkin' textiles here.
Albert the elder may be dull but he ain't dumb. He's got you Liberal goofs all excited about changing your light bulbs (requires three of you, if you were wondering). Whilst you squint in the dim light to read the contents fine print on your organic granola bar, Al and Tipper have left the hundreds of lights on in their villa in the south of France just in case they decide to jet in for the night.
So keep your pitiful hopes aglow, Cedar Mulch, much like the afterburners on Al Gore's Learjet. Meanwhile I'll be laughing at your naivete, peeing on your parades, and throwing my considerable intellectual firepower behind nothing of import.

Rice:
MOSCOW -
The Russian government under Vladimir Putin has amassed so much central authority that the power-grab may undermine Moscow's commitment to democracy, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday.
"In any country, if you don't have countervailing institutions, the power of any one president is problematic for democratic development," Rice told reporters after meeting with human-rights activists.
"I think there is too much concentration of power in the Kremlin. I have told the Russians that. Everybody has doubts about the full independence of the judiciary. There are clearly questions about the independence of the electronic media and there are, I think, questions about the strength of the Duma," said Rice, referring to the Russian parliament.

Durbin: No Immunity For
Durbin: No Immunity For Telecoms ‘Until We Understand What The Program Has Been About’ »
This week, the House introduced FISA reform legislation that refused to grant immunity to telecommunications companies for their participation in potentially illegal spying activities. President Bush immediately warned that he would veto the legislation if it did not surrender on the immunity provision.
Early reports suggested that the Senate was prepared to back down on the immunity provision. FireDogLake reported that the Senate version of the FISA bill “does contain immunity/amnesty for the telecom companies.”
But this weekend on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt,” Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke out forcefully against granting unconditional immunity to the telecom companies for potentially illegal acts:
I’m not for blanket immunity until we understand what the program has been about. The day will come, maybe in my lifetime or later, when we’ll finally figure out what the Bush administration has been up to these years with this secret program.
I don’t want the embarrassment of history coming back saying what were they thinking of in Congress to give blanket immunity when they didn’t even know the circumstances.
“The administration says trust us,” Durbin argued. “It is hard to trust an administration which has failed to even tell Congress what the programs are about.” Watch it:
Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) recently floated the possibility of filibustering the FISA legislation if it grants unconditional immunity to telecom companies. Glenn Greenwald has more.
