"Test cases. Mere beginnings. You might alter the population's disposition slightly by -influencing a few individuals but you won't change it radically. What a paucity of result for the effort expended. . . . But suppose we had the ability to predispose an entire population to exhibiting more desirable and compliant attitudes, say by introducing suitable chemical agents on a mass scale—which could be accomplished by any of several means. Because I think that could be the next step in this—provided we can learn enough about the relevant transfer patterns to encode them into molecular form. And who knows. Maybe, one day, we could actually fuse it into the genome and make it hereditable. So once society was conditioned into being untroublesome, its traits would automatically be passed on, which would enable us, its rightful rulers, to govern unthreatened and effectively, without the inconvenience of having to indoctrinate every generation afresh. In other words, we are standing on the threshold of a whole new age."

Nixon on Thompson: 'Dumb' but 'Friendly'

Fred Thompson has made much of his role 30 years ago as a young Senate lawyer helping to lead the investigation of the Watergate scandal and President Richard Nixon.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/10/nixon-on-thomps.html

wasp traps

http://eartheasy.com/live_natwasp_control.htm

Make a simple Water Trap
Use a razor knife to cut the top from a 2-liter plastic pop bottle. Cut just above the shoulder of the bottle. Discard the screw top. Fill with water about halfway. Coat the neck with jam, invert it and set back on the bottle. Use two small pieces
of tape to hold it in place.

Wasps will go down the funnel to get the jam, but will find it difficult to get out. Most will drop into the water and drown.
A few drops of dish soap in the water will make it hard for the wasps to tread water, and will hasten their demise. (You can also add a 1/4 cup of vinegar to the water to discourage honeybees from entering the trap in search of water.)
Note: In the spring and early summer, wasps are attracted to protein-based baits; use jam or other sweet baits in later summer and into fall.

Show titles

I agree - but it is their show so ulitmately they will decide.

I gave him Maron'd & Sedated w/Sammy & Marc - to be shortened of course to just Maron'd & Sedated w/ "I Wanna Be Sedated" as a theme song....but he thought it was too tough to remember...and of course the S & M show which everyone likes but they are loathe to go with due to the sexual connotation.

But I will agree that Unshaven w/Sammy & Marc is a great name and they will probably go with it.

Rudy's Past Set aside the

Rudy's Past
Set aside the three marriages, his pro-choice and anti-gun positions, the gay roommates, and the pictures of Rudy in drag. Let's be honest. By and large, the only thing interesting about any of those things is the discomfort it causes his fellow Republicans. It ties them in knots and that's fun to watch.

But on the substance of things, there is much about Giuliani's past that doesn't stand up to much scrutiny, especially his business dealings and some of the cronies he's appointed, like Bernie Kerik. Today comes word (via The Politico) of a big lawsuit by a prominent Texas GOPer against Giuliani's law firm and his business partner and close friend and adviser Kenneth Caruso, alleging that they defrauded the plaintiff out of $10 million in a complicated investment deal involving an offshore bank later shutdown amid charges of money laundering.

Giuliani has been around and involved with some pretty mucky characters. It's still not clear the extent to which some of that muck has rubbed off onto Rudy directly. But it's hard to stay clean next to a steady drip of muckiness.

Obama For months I've been

Obama
For months I've been quietly hoping that Barack Obama would at least make a race of it with Hillary Clinton. So I was more than a little disappointed when all the metrics of conventional wisdom (in the wise and foolish senses) started showing Hillary leaving Obama in the dust and becoming the dominant frontrunner and presumptive nominee.

Folks who've been watching all this closer than I have, like Matt Yglesias, say part of the issue is that Obama just won't come out and say what his campaign is about. Says Matt, "Watching the primary campaign, it keeps seeming to me as if Barack Obama is making arguments that, while fairly clear to me, must go over the heads of at least half of political junkies, to say nothing of normal people going about their lives."

But the whole thing kind of crystallized for me this weekend when I was reading Maureen Dowd's review of Arthur Schlesinger's diaries in the Times. And, yes, it makes me wonder about myself too that I'm picking up political insights from Maureen Dowd. But here goes. It's her riff on Schlesinger's pained (or perhaps self-indulgent reflection) on his defection from Adlai Stevenson to Jack Kennedy ...

Kennedy has not been “consecrated by inner conviction,” he writes, adding, “I also believe him to be a devious, and if necessary, ruthless man.” But he suspects that his friend Lauren Bacall is right that Stevenson has “a political death wish.”
“The thought of power induces in Stevenson doubt, reluctance, even guilt,” he says. The diaries from the ’50s are an inadvertently hilarious record of the prissy Stevenson’s coy tango with his party. The year after Adlai loses to Ike, he has dinner with Truman, who urges him to take hold of the party. Adlai disingenuously demurs about a lack of qualifications. “Well, if a knucklehead like me can be a successful president,” Truman replies briskly, “I guess you can do it all right.”

But Stevenson is stuck on the same mental pedestal that Barack Obama is on — “split between his desire to win and his desire to live up to the noble image of himself.”

John Kennedy, by contrast, “takes power in his stride,” showing with the choice of Lyndon Johnson — unpalatable to Schlesinger and Bobby Kennedy — that he is “grasping the nettle.”

I don't know if she 'gets' Obama. But I think she's on to some of what's got his campaign stuck in second gear. And I think it's what Matt's talking about too. Obama isn't so much running for the nomination in the sense of reaching out and taking it. He's trying to show us how marvelous he is (and this isn't snark, he's really pretty marvelous) so that Democratic voters will recognize it and give him the nomination.

But that's not how it works in this country. I don't know if it really works otherwise anywhere else. But you have to really want it, come out and say it, take it. I thought about qualities that describe what is at issue. 'Toughness' seems to bound up in meta-national security mumbojumbo. 'Ruthlessness' sounds too, well, ruthless. You have to want it enough that you reach out and take it. Which isn't always pretty and admirable. But that's what it takes.

How Gay Marriage Really Will Change Hetero Marriage

I think same-sex marriage does, and will, have an effect on opposite-sex marriage.

Not in an immediate cause-and-effect way, of course. When Adam and Stephen get married in Massachusetts, it doesn't send out magical death-rays across the country to destroy the marriage of Alan and Evelyn in Kansas.

But I think it has an effect. Not a trivial one, either. And I think the movement to legalize same-sex marriage does itself a disservice by acting like it doesn't.

Here's why.

In order for our society to accept or even tolerate same-sex marriage, a lot of fairly basic, deep-rooted ideas have to change. The way we define family. The way we think of what it means to be a man, and what it means to be a woman. The importance of sex and sexual fulfillment. What we consider natural and normal. Etc., etc., etc.

All of these things shape our practice of marriage, our understanding of what it is and what it's for. And in order for us to accept or even tolerate same-sex marriage, all of them will need to change.

Thus changing the shape of marriage. All marriage.

Including the opposite-sex ones. If for no other reason, the standard default answers to these questions will quit being standard and default. If these changes happen, people will still be free to define family, maleness, femaleness, etc., in the old traditional ways. But they'll be forced to think about it, to see the traditional way as just one choice among many, to live that way because it works for them ... instead of unthinkingly falling into it as the one right choice that works for everybody.

woke up late

caught the show after about the 25 minute mark. more tech problems today. but still, fun to watch.

the thing about building 7 in the WTC is that that building was connected underground to the Twin Towers - and the heat from the twin towers in the plane crashes went underground into that maze of tunnels and ingnited the fuel that was being stored in building 7. they covered this on Keith Olbermann's show a while back. it doesn't seem like that big of a mystery to me.

will listen to Marc this evening and probably to Sam later on.

I liked someone's idea of naming the show "The Air America Owes Me Money" hour. And I still like "Two Jewy". lol.

- Jayson

was'nt rudy poo responsible for selling the towers?

port authority, losing money, silverstien insurance, bid to demolish in the millions because of the asbestos?

sure was convenient for a shitload of folks when they demolished them and blamed it on the terrists.

the real terrists are the ones smirking because they still have'nt been busted.

what pisses me off was the murder of all the people and the emergency crews.

Well Jayson

I've got a Civil Eng degree with a major in Structural Engineering and although I no longer do that line of work I find that collapse inconceivable by any stretch of the imagination. Regardless of the Diesel obfuscation. First of all it's not at all easy to get a collapse that symmetrical. But that's just the beginning of my problems with the story.

Jayson

did you act as satan in the movie "the greatest story ever told" you were not acting then you were the devil himself---

the baptist!

feeble excuse

"heat from the twin towers in the plane crashes went underground into that maze of tunnels and ingnited the fuel that was being stored in building 7"

that's pretty bizarre reasoning considering that a week of planting thermate is all it took to demolish all those buildings into their footprints.

get real.anyone who thinks those buildings were'nt demolished by explosives and cutting charges is delusional.

Why I fight and why we all must.

by John Bruhns (DC) · 10/07/2007 11:39:00 AM ET

(Bumped -- This is a MUST read from John Bruhns)

The American people want an end to this war so badly. If the politicians will not listen it is our duty as Americans to make them listen. We owe it to our country and our troops to ensure that our members of Congress no longer allow themselves to be bullied by a coward like George W. Bush. If Bush vetoes legislation for our troops and an end to the war Congress must shove it right back in his face. We must act now while there is still a chance to make Congress do their job as a co-equal branch of government and start bringing this war to an end. They need to be equally as defiant as Bush has been for the last 7 years and fight fire with fire when it comes to this President. After all, that is what we elected them to do.

I will fight for an end to this war with my last breath. We all must.

Democrats to unveil wiretapping bill , AP version

Democrats to unveil wiretapping bill
By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer

The Justice Department would have to reveal to Congress the details of all electronic surveillance conducted without court orders since Sept. 11, 2001, including the so-called Terrorist Surveillance Program, if a new Democratic wiretapping bill is approved.

The draft bill, scheduled to be introduced to Congress Tuesday, would also require the Justice Department to maintain a database of all Americans subjected to government eavesdropping without a court order, including whether their names have been revealed to other government agencies.

The Bush administration has refused to share that information with Congress so far.

The Terrorist Surveillance Program was a secret eavesdropping program undertaken after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks without the approval of an intelligence court created 30 years ago to monitor such programs.

The Democratic legislation is certain to draw sharp objections and possibly a veto threat because it lacks at least one feature the White House demands: it does not grant retroactive legal immunity to telecommunications companies that cooperated with government surveillance between 2001 and 2007 without the court orders. Around 40 lawsuits name telecommunications companies for alleged violations of wiretapping laws, according to administration officials.

The measures are included in a rewrite of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to be proposed by Democratic leadership on Tuesday. The bill would replace the Protect America Act of 2007, the controversial FISA revision adopted by Congress in August. That bill was hastily adopted under pressure from the Bush administration, which said changes in technology had resulted in dire gaps in its authority to eavesdrop on terrorists.

Privacy and civil liberties advocates voiced strong concerns in the weeks after the law was signed, saying it gave the government far more power to eavesdrop on American communications without court oversight than was initially understood.

The "Responsible Electronic Surveillance That is Overseen, Reviewed and Effective Act of 2007" — or RESTORE Act — would clarify that no court orders are required for the government to conduct surveillance on communications outside the United States even when the surveillance is conducted on U.S. soil, provided the target of the eavesdropping is not known to be a U.S. person.

The bill allows the attorney general and the director of national intelligence to request an "umbrella warrant" to conduct surveillance of foreign targets, or groups of targets, for up to one year when there is a possibility that American communications may be intercepted.

The RESTORE Act would expire in December 31, 2009.

Macaca

Macaca
I don't know how Fred Thompson's naming of former Virginia Sen. George Allen as one his three campaign co-chairs can be seen as anything other than a nod and a wink to a certain brand of racially-charged Republican voters.

As for Allen, he's apparently focused on another run for Virginia governor--and on escaping the shadow of his macaca comment:

"I'm trying to help out candidates in Virginia," [Allen] said, mentioning GOP House member Dave Nutter in the New River Valley and "a fella named Omarh Rajah running for the school board in Chesterfield. We've got some really good folks running."
A fella named Omarh Rajah. Does it make me a cynic if I think Allen didn't slip that name in there by accident?

Rudy's Close Friend And

Rudy's Close Friend And Adviser Is Slapped With Big, Ugly Lawsuit
By Greg Sargent - October 9, 2007, 11:50AM
Ben Smith has a great scoop: It seems yet another member of Rudy's inner circle is turning out to be a real live one:

A prominent Texas Republican has sued Rudy Giuliani’s law firm and a close friend and partner of Giuliani’s, Kenneth Caruso, alleging that Caruso, the firm and others “schemed and conspired to steal $10 million.”
J. Virgil Waggoner, a Houston businessman and philanthropist, filed the previously unreported suit in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan in July. He alleges that Caruso, his former lawyer, conspired with Waggoner’s investment adviser to cover up the disappearance of $10 million Waggoner invested through a Caribbean bank, the British Trade & Commerce Bank.

Waggoner claims Caruso “may have also been romantically involved” with the investment adviser.

The Caribbean bank was shut down after its handling of Waggoner’s investment came to light, and its president was later jailed for money laundering.

Remember Bernie Kerik? How about Alan Placa, the childhood priest of Rudy accused of molesting boys?

In this case, Caruso isn't just a business partner -- he's a close friend of the Mayor who worked on his mayoral campaigns and even advised him when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. As this story reminds us yet again, Rudy really has a talent for attracting the most savory of characters to his side. Smith's whole tale is really worth a read.

GOOP Debate(?) Tonight

Tonight there is another 2008 GOOP Presidential Campaign Debate. Well actually it will just be bunch of old white guys standing on a stage somewhere in Michigan. They will look sincere, They will sound profound. They will speak words in response to words spoken as questions. Why tune in? For Rudy? Nah, everyone knows his fear and die routine. For Mitt? Only if you want to be amused by his pandering. Okay, then how about John? Nope, McNasty is still one issue John, Iraq. So why bother?

Well, the ever-lazy Fred Thompson makes his debate debut tonight. He might be stellar. He might fall asleep at the lectern. And he might entertain us with his views on issues such as the USSR. Will Fred give it more than 60%? Will he just be another 60+ year old political debutante? Take the time and tune in; it might be interesting—MSNBC 9:00PM, EDT.

On a more serious note. Keep you ears open for two of the candidates. They usually don’t get to talk much. Listen to what Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee have to say. If I were a GOOPER, (that thought gives me the willies) these two are the only GOOPERS I could back. In contrast to the others, these men are reasonable, decent and would make a respectable President. The rest of the pack, well, let’s just say that all they want to do is fly around in Air Force One. Enjoy!

A Security Firm again?

2 Iraqi women killed by convoy guards
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 58 minutes ago

Guards in a security convoy opened fire on a car at an intersection in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing two Christian women, police said. Separately, suicide car bombings targeting a local police chief and a Sunni sheik working with U.S. forces killed at least 19 people.

Across Iraq, violence claimed the lives of at least 44 people.

Police and witnesses could not immediately give more details about the gunmen in Baghdad except to say they were in a convoy of four SUVs commonly used by private security companies and the Iraqi Ministry of Interior.

While there was no indication Blackwater USA was involved, the attack threatened to increase calls for limits on the security firms that mounted after the Sept. 16 shooting deaths of as many as 17 Iraqi civilians allegedly that company's guards. The American security company said its employees were acting in self-defense.

The women were in a white car that drove into the Masbah intersection in the central Karradah district as the convoy of three white and one gray SUVs was stopped about 100 yards away, according to a policeman who witnessed the shooting from a nearby checkpoint.

The men in the SUVs threw a smoke bomb in an apparent bid to warn the car against coming forward, said Riyadh Majid, the policeman. The woman driving the car tried to stop, but was killed along with the passenger when two of the guards in the convoy opened fire, Majid said.

The pavement where the attack occurred was stained with blood and covered with shattered glass from the car windows.

He said the convoy then raced away and Iraqi police came to collect the bodies and tow the car to the local police station.

Another policeman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution, said the guards were masked and wearing khaki uniforms. He said one of them left the vehicle and started to shoot at the car while another opened fire from the open back door of a separate SUV.

The victims were identified by relatives and police as Marou Awanis, born in 1959, as Geneva Jalal, born in 1977.

2 Iraqi Women Killed By Convoy Guards

The horrific bloody murdering of innocents including women & children continues again & again with this senseless war:

2 Iraqi Women Killed By Convoy Guards
------------------------------------
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD - Guards in a security convoy opened fire on a car at an intersection in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing two Iraqi Christian women, police said.

The State Department said the convoy was not protecting U.S. diplomats, but an embassy spokeswoman said an American nongovernmental organization may have been involved.

Across Iraq, violence claimed the lives of at least 44 people, including 19 who died in coordinated suicide car bombings in the north that targeted a local police chief and a Sunni sheik.

Police and witnesses could not immediately give more details about the gunmen in Baghdad except to say they were in a convoy of four SUVs commonly used by private security companies and the Iraqi Ministry of Interior.

The womens' deaths threatened to increase calls for limits on the private security firms, which have come under intense scrutiny since the Sept. 16 shooting deaths of as many as 17 Iraqi civilians allegedly by guards with Blackwater USA, the largest firm protecting U.S. diplomats in Iraq. In that case, the American security company said its employees were acting in self-defense. -

mp3 of today's & last week's show?

Does any kind soul out there have an mp3 of S&M in the morning they might be willing to share? My 2 favorite radio guys TOGETHER and I can't get away from my work to see it live...it's killing me!!! I've tried the VOD but it seems to be under construction....

Punched in the stomach!! Yep. That's what it feels like!

Punched in the stomach
By Ruth Rosen | bio
When I opened The New York Times today, I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach. The headline of the lead story announced that "The Democrats Seem Ready to Extend Wiretap Powers."

What, I asked myself, won't they deny the Bush administration?

I'm hardly naive. I realize that most of them are worried about being viewed as soft on terror and getting re-elected. But they are complicit in creating an authoritarian infrastructure that could one day be used against any and all of us. That, of course,is the long view, which is not the way they think. For them, it's the short-term goal of getting re-elected and damn our democratic traditions.

I also know that no sitting president wants to lose a war on his or her watch. So how and when will the Iraq war ever end? Sometimes, when I ask myself this question, I can see American helicopters lifting off from the Green Zone, while U.S. bases are permanently staged with the Kurds.

Memories of demonstrating against Democrats who lied, deceived and lied again during the Vietnam War, still haunt me. I do not trust them, even though I was truly happy --for a few weeks--after the last election.

But they have not just disappointed. They are spineless. They have capitulated and I am one of those odd Americans who cares so deeply about our civil liberties, our civil rights and our moral credibility around the world, that I am viewed as a dissenter, rather than as a profoundly patriotic citizen.

"It's time to take to the streets," my friends and I say to each other. Not violently, of course. But on October 27th, when United for Peace sponsors 11 massive demonstrations around the country, I won't be home whining about the Democrats, I'll be out expressing my outrage at both parties, demanding an end to this war and letting the Democrats know that they have more to lose if, in the name of seeming tough on terror, they keep giving up precious democratic principles.

At stake is nothing less than our democracy itself.

Out of fiction field comes this little rant that seems to be responding to absolutely no one on here
:
"get real.anyone who thinks those buildings were'nt demolished by explosives and cutting charges is delusional."

That has to be one of the most delusional whacked out statements made on here especially when there is absolutely no confirmed evidence what so ever supporting such an illogical unscientific conspiracy theory.

We have to remember that when we put out unsubstaniated unrealistic statements like that with absolutely no confirmed facts to support them that it makes anything else we say(no matter how true) highly suspect.

Get Real indeed.

Good solid post another anonymous.

I'm as progressive as anyone but these nutty conspiracy theories are so full of hole that they could be used as window screen. Fortunally hardly anyone pays attention to them as anyone with common sense sees right through them.

They are a complete waste of time and more importantly they are a unneeded distraction when there is so much continuing bad shit perpetuated by this criminal administration.

then I could throw shit at people...

and he could be forgiven. they'd say

"What do you expect? He's a fucking money!"

I Officially Give up On the Democrats

It's going to take a generation to move these spineless Democrats out of office. Unfortunately, that is our only alternative. You can't vote for a Republican these days and the Democrats make you embarrassed to ever be associated with them.

Jack Goldsmith is one of the most conservative lawyers in the country. He was the head of the Office of Legal Counsel for George W. Bush. He is telling you that what the Bush administration did for years in its first term was definitely illegal (that's why he demanded changes in their practices when he was at OLC) and strongly suggesting that what they are doing now might also be illegal.

So, what is the Democratic response? They are considering changing the law to make it legal in hindsight. The equivalent would be if the Republicans tried to pass a law saying it was acceptable to lie under oath after they saw Clinton perjure himself in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Could you imagine?

[...]

How is it possible to have any respect for these Democrats? Every day, I struggle not to call them cowards and weaklings. And every day they make it harder. They are truly pathetic. I'm so tired of encouraging them to grow a backbone. It's a hopeless struggle. I give up.
