More Clueless than Bush?
I know it's hard to imagine but the Hollywood Raisin, Fred Thompson seems to know nothing about anything:
Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Thursday he was unaware that a federal judge had ruled last week that lethal injection procedures in his home state were unconstitutional.
Thompson also told reporters he was unaware that the U.S. Supreme Court agreed this week to consider a Kentucky case about whether lethal injection violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
Thompson's support for the death penalty was a major part of his campaign platform when he first ran for the U.S. Senate in Tennessee in 1994. Asked for his response to the recent Tennessee and Kentucky cases, Thompson responded, "I hadn't heard that. I didn't know."
Honestly, this guy seems to know nothing. Doesn't he have staff, a computer, access to newspapers? Somebody get this guy a script.

Webb: I ‘regret’
Webb: I ‘regret’ Limbaugh calling troops ‘phony soldiers.’ On MSNBC’s Countdown last night, host Keith Olbermann asked Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), a military veteran and former Secretary of the Navy, to respond to right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh’s recent comment that troops who support withdrawal from Iraq are “phony soldiers.” “I really regret Mr. Limbaugh saying things like that,” replied Webb. The military has “a wide variety of political viewpoints, from all the way for this to all the way against it, and we need to respect that,” he added. Watch it:
Other members of Congress, including Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) have denounced Limbaugh’s comments as well.

Dan Rather stands by his story
His lawsuit will attempt to show that CBS tried to suppress the report on Bush's National Guard Service and the Abu Ghraib abuses.
By Sidney Blumenthal
[...] Then Rather's suit will become an extraordinary commission of inquiry into a major news organization's intimidation, complicity and corruption under the Bush administration. No congressional committee would be able to penetrate into the sanctum of any news organization to divulge its inner workings. But intent on vindicating his reputation, capable of financing an expensive legal challenge, and armed with the power of subpoena, Rather will charge his attorneys to interrogate news executives and perhaps administration officials under oath on a secret and sordid chapter of the Bush presidency.
["Perhaps"?? Should depositions begin prior to the Bushiters being exorcised from DC, the Slick Willie/Paula Jones precedent of deposing officials while still in office will come back to bite them squarely on their tender, well-worn little boy-toy asses. *snark*]
State Dept. IG Retaliates
State Dept. IG Retaliates Against Whistblowers, Threatens ‘Their Jobs And Careers’
Approximately 10 days ago, House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) wrote to State Department Inspector General Howard Krongard to report allegations from seven IG employees that he “has repeatedly interfered with on-going investigations to protect the State Department and the White House from political embarrassment.”
Krongard has thwarted investigations into waste, fraud and abuse in Iraq. He has also “refused to cooperate with an investigation into alleged weapons smuggling by a large, unidentified State Department contractor.”
Today, Waxman sent Krongard another disturbing letter that reveals the State Department Inspector General has been retaliating against the whistleblowers. Waxman writes:
This week, several current employees in your office — including two who have agreed to go on the record — informed the Committee that your senior staff attempted to coerce them not to cooperate with the committee’s inquiry and threatened their jobs and careers.
In the letter, Waxman explains that one week after he informed Krongard of the accusations being made by employees within his department, the whistleblowers were accosted by one of Krongard’s subordinates: a congressional affairs liaison who works for the State IG’s office. Here’s what one whistleblower reports that he was told:
[T]he congressional liaison told him: “You have no protection against reprisal. You have no whistleblower protections. Howard could retaliate and you would have no recourse.”
If there was any doubt about whether the Inspector General has been improperly carrying out the duties of his office, he’s confirmed it with his attempts to retaliate against his own employees, at least one of whom he had previously lauded as “one of my best investigators.”
Waxman directed Krongard “to suspend all communications (other than those necessary to collect responsive documents) with employees the Committee is planning to interview.”

A Fury For Justice
A Fury For Justice
Lucy Parsons claimed throughout her life that she was of Mexican and Native American ancestry. Newspaper accounts from the time, however, constantly referred to her as “colored”, “black”, or various derogatory terms implying African ancestry. Some accounts written by activists who knew her later in life made similar claims, and some accounts even claim that photographs prove her African ancestry. Some scholars, such as Ashbaugh and Davis, claim that Parsons invented her Mexican and Native American ancestry as a way of avoiding certain obstacles, such as laws against “miscegenation.” This possibility is congruous with a history of African Americans adopting an alternative racial or ethnic identity as way of breaking out of the constraints imposed upon Black racial identity. As Richard Brent Turner says in his discussion of Noble Drew Ali’s construction of a “Moorish American” identity, “When black leaders concentrate on ethnicity and construct new ethnic names for their races, they throw water on the coals of racial discourse, thereby making themselves and their constituencies more acceptable to the white American mainstream.” It seems possible that Lucy Parsons attempted such a manuever. It is certain beyond any doubt that she was perceived as Black or “colored” by most observers in her era, and thus the social obstacles of her racialization were very real, regardless of her true ancestry. While a Mexican and Native American identity would certainly not have been impervious to racial stigmatization, it may have appeared sufficiently exotic to mitigate the worst effects of racism in the late nineteenth century.

Here's an important story. If you're a regular reader, you know that for the last week, Spencer Ackerman's been turning over important new ground in the latest FISA dispute. DNI Mike McConnell said that restrictive FISA regs led to a critical delay in obtaining a warrant to surveil Iraqi insurgents who'd kidnapped American soldiers. But Ackerman's sources disputed McConnell's account. And now the Associated Press has obtained documents that appear to confirm Spencer's reporting. The delay wasn't caused by FISA but because administration officials couldn't get their act together quickly enough. Check out Spencer's latest.

In response to your comment; you've doubtless seen several examples of Fred Thompson's ignorance, which just goes to show, you can act like you have a Juris Doctor for a TV show, but acting never raised anyone's IQ, at least, not that I'm aware.
My nephew, who has a personal stake in the gay rights debate, showed me the following article from 9-10-07 (which I previously posted but which bears repeating):
=========
Fred Thompson: senile or ignorant?
TV star and presidential candidate Fred Thompson spelled out his views on same-sex marriage over the weekend in a video posted to Salon.com. Judging by his take on the issue, the former Tennessee senator is terribly misinformed.
In the video, Thompson says he supports a federal constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. “It would have two provisions,” he said. First, he would make sure that someone married in Massachusetts couldn’t move to his beloved state of Tennessee and demand equal rights. Thompson doesn’t seem to realize that the Defense of Marriage Act, passed by Congress in 1996 and signed into law by President Clinton, renders such a provision unnecessary. In fact, some of the moderate members of Congress who helped defeat a federal amendment cited DOMA as a reason for their opposition.
The second provision of Thompson’s vision of a constitutional amendment is that no judge could impose gay marriage on a state. “There have been no state legislatures that have affirmatively allowed gay marriage in the United States.”
That’s an incredible statement coming from Thompson, who was in Los Angeles last week announcing his candidacy on the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and skipping a debate with his fellow Republican candidates. Given that he was in California just last week, you’d think he would have heard the news that the California Legislature approved a same-sex marriage bill — for the second time. It was a moderate Republican governor — Arnold Schwarzenegger — who vetoed it the first time and will likely do so again.
More incredibly, Thompson then contradicts himself, stating that he is a “federalist” and doesn’t believe in “one size fits all” federal laws absolving the states of the need to pass good legislation. He appears to have forgotten that he once opposed a federal amendment banning gay marriage. Is Thompson senile, ignorant or just hoping to challenge Mitt Romney for the title of king of the flip-floppers?
Thompson invokes the usual line assailing “activist” judges and denouncing liberalism. That tripe might play on Sean Hannity’s show, but Thompson is eventually going to have to demonstrate a better grasp of the issues and the law if he expects voters to take seriously the candidacy of a TV actor who served an undistinguished term in the Senate and who President Nixon once dubbed “dumb as hell.”

Oh, you mean they were supposed to help consumers and not industry despite deadly and dangerous products? How does that fit with the GOP theory of industry self regulation?
The CPSC finally picked up the crib last week after the newspaper informed the agency of its investigation.
In announcing the recall, the CPSC said it had received reports of three deaths, seven infants trapped and 55 other incidents relating to faulty drop rail hardware and design. In all three deaths, parents had unwittingly installed the drop rails upside down.
"The fact that it has taken more than four years from the date of the first incident report and more than two years since the first report of an infant's death to announce a recall of these products is alarming," [Senator] Durbin said in the letter.
"It is unacceptable for the public to have to rely on journalists for this commission to act in a timely fashion."
A sad but true reality of consumer protection during Republican rule.

Why Did Israel Attack
Why Did Israel Attack Syria?
...
How credible are these two scenarios?
The nuclear claims against Damascus were discounted so quickly by experts of the region that Washington was soon downgrading the accusation to claims that Syria was only hiding the material on North Korea’s behalf. But why would Syria, already hounded by Israel and the US, provide such a readymade pretext for still harsher treatment? Why, equally, would North Korea undermine its hard-won disarmament deal with the US? And why, if Syria were covertly engaging in nuclear mischief, did it alert the world to the fact by revealing the Israeli air strike?
The other justification for the attack was at least based in a more credible reality: Damascus, Hizbullah and Iran undoubtedly do share some military resources. But their alliance should be seen as the kind of defensive pact needed by vulnerable actors in a Sunni-dominated region where the US wants unlimited control of Gulf oil and supports only those repressive regimes that cooperate on its terms. All three are keenly aware that it is Israel’s job to threaten and punish any regimes that fail to toe the line.
Contrary to the impression being created in the West, genocidal hatred of Israel and Jews, however often Ahmadinejad’s speeches are mistranslated, is not the engine of these countries’ alliance.
...
the only known pure human was Audrey Hepburn
now i've gotta say, how do we know that for a fact?
how do we know that for a fact?

Pro-Democracy Means Anti-Facisim
by Cindy Sheehan
Seeing the images of the monks and others being beaten reminds me of the Democratic Convention in 1968 where Chicago police beat the living daylights out of demonstrators who were there to try and force the party to come closer to the budding anti-war movement. It didn’t work. Instead of wonderful-pro-peace candidate, George McGovern, the party nominated Johnson’s VP, Hubert Humphrey. We know what happened next: Nixon. After last night’s Democratic “debate” I am terrified and assured that the Democrats will have another pro-war nominee.

Iraq War Vet to Limbaugh: You're the Phony
As Media Matters reported today, Rush Limbaugh, on his show said that those troops who come home and want to get America out of the middle of the religious civil war in Iraq are "phony soldiers." I'd love for you, Rush, to have me on your show and tell that to me to my face.
Where to begin?
First, in what universe is a guy who never served even close to being qualified to judge those who have worn the uniform? Rush Limbaugh has never worn a uniform in his life -- not even one at Mickey D's -- and somehow he's got the moral standing to pass judgment on the men and women who risked their lives for this nation, and his right to blather smears on the airwaves?
Second, maybe Rush doesn't much care, but the majority of troops on the ground in Iraq, and those who have returned, do not back the President's failed policy.
and what are they going to do?
that was the street chant in 1968 at the democratic national convention when daleys thugs moved in to break up the crowd.

U.S. Soldier: 'I Was Ordered to Murder Unarmed Iraqi'
A U.S. soldier broke down in tears Thursday as he testified that he was ordered to shoot an unarmed Iraqi man, and that his sergeant laughed and told the trooper to finish the job as the man convulsed on the ground.
The military reported, meanwhile, it had opened an investigation of the deaths of five women and four children killed earlier this week in a village south of Baghdad where American forces had carried out ground and air assaults.
Sgt. Evan Vela's testimony came during the court-martial of Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval, of Laredo, Texas. Sandoval is on trial for allegedly killing Iraqis and trying to cover up the deaths by planting weapons at the scene.
Vela, Sandoval and Staff Sgt. Michael Hensley of Candler, N.C., are all charged in the case.

Dennis Kucinich Offers Personal Healthcare Choices
While there is a common thread in the Democratic political rhetoric on health costs in the United States and the need for insurance coverage for all Americans, how that is accomplished remains fighting words among most of the contenders. Dennis Kucinich, Democrat Representative from Ohio claims the simplest method is to qualify everyone for Medicare.
In the meantime, this 60year-old Congressman points to his own health initiative to help others see the difference a lifestyle change can make in a person’s health. As a vegan who subsists on fruits and vegetables that he credits for his well-being and has stated that having a wife a couple of decades his junior also keeps him feeling young and healthy.

A 19 Year-Old Kucinich Volunteer Responds to Democratic
Candidates in "FANTASYLAND"

Tell A Friend
Intro
The top Democratic candidates, Obama and Clinton, the two who were the primary focus of the debate yet again (and I make that conclusion by the order that the questions were asked of candidates), proved themselves to be subscribers to faulty logic that involves blaming Republicans and not taking responsibility within the party for failures in the past seven years. Obama used jargon such as “bad options and worse options”, “no promises”, “country at crossroads” and “need someone to bring people together”, “take on special interests”, “telling truth even when it’s tough”, “everything should be on the table”, etc. Clinton used jargon such as “I agree with Barack”, “don’t have votes”, “don’t want to talk about what might or what might not happen” (hypotheticals), “not gonna answer”, “bipartisan commitment”, “fiscal responsibility”, etc. The “top two” candidates, which have been decided to be the “top two” by media coverage and media polls taken, basically spent two hours telling the American people that they will not promise anything, they will not say that change can be made, they will not talk about possibilities even when that may give us insight into the mind of a future leader of America, and they will most certainly avoid answering questions specifically and instead use heavy-handed rhetoric. They will go to Republicans even when president to find out if their plan is acceptable to them or not. In relation to the "top two", the other candidates, appeared to distance themselves from the “top two” and attempt to overhaul their image in the eyes of the American people so they could be more like Kucinich or Gravel. These candidates (Biden, Dodd, Edwards, Richardson) should be thankful that the majority of American people are still unclear on who Gravel or Kucinich is and do not think about them as possiblities for president because they've been blacked out by the media.
Through this article, I intend to look at three key elements of this debate that should be focused on. One, I will look at the answers on Iraq. Two, I will look at the health care discussion. And three, I will examine the overall element of corporate power/special interests that Democratic candidates claim to stand against.

WH distances itself from
WH distances itself from Rush on ‘phony soldiers’ remark. In a press briefing this morning, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino was pressed specifically about Rush Limbaugh’s “phony soldiers” comment. She responded: “It’s not what the President would have used, no.” Watch it:
Recall, Bush blasted the MoveOn ad as “disgusting,” and he lamented that more Democrats did not “speak out strongly” against it. TPM observes that the White House response to Limbaugh is “hardly the scathing condemnation that MoveOn earned at the hands of the President of course.”
UPDATE: Taylor Marsh does a round up of some of the indignation directed at MoveOn that came from the right wing.
UPDATE II: The Weekly Standard steps up to defend Limbaugh, while acknowledging his words were “poorly chosen.”

Congress quietly passes
Congress quietly passes billions for Iraq. Yesterday, the Senate voted 94-1 for “a stop-gap spending bill that gives the Bush White House at least $9 billion in new funding” for the Iraq war. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) was the sole dissenter in the Senate; the House voted 404-14 to approve the measure. Congress also granted the administration “emergency authority to tap further into a $70 billion ‘bridge fund’” for the occupation while “Congress works on appropriations bills.”

Military Reports It Has Killed A Senior Leader of Al Qaeda In Iraq, But Was He Killed A Year Ago?
The U.S. military announced today that it has killed a “senior leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.” Brig. Gen. Joseph Anderson “identified the man as Abu Usama al-Tunisi, a Tunisian described as a close associate and likely successor to Abu Ayyub al-Masri, Al-Qaeda in Iraq’s Egyptian leader.”
CNN quickly jumped on the story, reporting that al-Tunisi was “killed Tuesday south of Baghdad.” CNN’s Jamie McIntyre reported:
[The military was] able to zero in on this al Qaeda leader in a series of operations that began in early September, and it’s really a textbook of how the U.S. military is operating. Each operation, they capture somebody who’s a little bit closer to the guy they’re looking for.
CNN said the death was confirmed by a hand-written note from al-Tunisi that was found in the aftermath of an airstrike “in which he says he’s surrounded and desperate for help.” “The main thing here,” McIntyre reported, “is the U.S. military insists this was a dangerous terrorist” and it deals “a serious blow” to the al Qaeda leadership. Watch it:
But terrorism analyst Evan Kohlman issued a “global terror alert” last year stating that al-Tunisi had died in July 2006. Kohlman’s report quotes a release from a terrorist group:
“The martyrdom of Abu Usama al-Tunisi [from Tunisia], the commander of [Al-Qaida’s] Aeisha Brigade [tasked with air defense missions]… I announce the news to the Islamic nation regarding the martyrdom of one of its heroes and true men.”
While it’s possible that there could have been two different Abu Usama al-Tunisis, it is the responsibility of news organizations to resolve these kinds of questions and double-check the facts before reporting them.
Moreover, there is reason for skepticism. In July, the U.S. command in Baghdad “ballyhooed the killing of a key al Qaeda leader but later admitted that the military had declared him dead a year ago.” Also in July, the military announced the capture of a “top leader of al Qaeda in Iraq” who had been captured weeks ago.

They even taught me to sing songs about the mass-murder of non-Jews.

David Letterman on Thursday announced a segment on "George Bush vs. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad," promising also that each joke "will be punctuated with a ridiculous sound effect."
Along with celebrity gags and jokes playing off the Iranian president's popular image as a bloodthirsty tyrant, some of the more interesting comparisons were:
"Ahmadinejad: Member of the Islamic Society of Engineers. Bush: Member of the Chuck Norris fan club."
"Ahmadinejad: Speaks in broken, hard-to-understand English. Bush: Speaks in broken, hard-to-understand English."
"Ahmadinejad: Holocaust denier. Bush: Global warning denier."
And finally, "Ahmadinejad: Underlings refer to him as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Bush: Underlings refer to him as 'President Numbnuts.'"

Key nations agree to delay
Key nations agree to delay Iran action
By EDITH M. LEDERER and MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writers
2 hours, 53 minutes ago
Six key nations agreed Friday to delay until November a new U.N. resolution that would toughen sanctions against Iran, waiting to see if Tehran answers questions about its disputed nuclear program.
A joint statement from the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany said they would finalize the new resolution and bring it to a vote unless reports in November from the chief U.N. nuclear official and the European Union's foreign policy chief "show a positive outcome of their efforts."
U.N. nuclear chief Mohamed ElBaradei and Iranian officials agreed in July that Tehran would answer questions from agency experts by December on more than two decades of nuclear activity — most of it secret until revealed more than four years ago. Technical officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency returned to Tehran this week to start probing outstanding questions, some with possible weapons applications.
In the statement issued after a ministerial meeting of the six countries attended by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, the countries welcomed the IAEA agreement with Iran.
"We call upon Iran, however, to produce tangible results rapidly and effectively by clarifying all outstanding issues and concerns on Iran's nuclear program including topics which could have the military nuclear dimension," the statement said.
Two U.N. resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran have failed to persuade it to suspend uranium enrichment. Tehran insists its program is aimed at producing energy for civilian use but the U.S., its European allies and many others fear the program's real goal is nuclear weapons.
In a Tuesday address at the U.N. General Assembly, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the nuclear issue is "closed" and vowed to defy any U.N. Security Council move for more sanctions.
The six powers reiterated their June 2006 offer of a package of economic and political rewards to Tehran, but only if it stops enrichment before the start of such negotiations — meant to achieve a long-term moratorium on enrichment.
In the joint statement, they asked Solana to meet with Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, "to lay the foundation for future negotiations."

Nations' Statement on
Nations' Statement on Iran
By The Associated Press – 1 hour ago
A joint statement from the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on Friday, as provided by the State Department:
1. The proliferation risks of the Iranian nuclear program remain a source of serious concern to the International Community, as expressed very clearly in UNSC Resolutions 1696, 1737 and 1747.
2. We are committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and underline the need for all States Party to that Treaty to comply fully with all their obligations. We seek a negotiated solution that would address the international community's concerns over Iran's nuclear program. We reiterate our commitment to see the proliferation implication of Iran's nuclear program resolved, and have therefore met today to reaffirm our commitment to our dual track approach.
3. We remain ready to engage with Iran in negotiations on a comprehensive long-term agreement to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue. Creating the conditions for such negotiations requires that Iran fully and verifiably suspend its enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, as required by UNSC Resolutions 1737 and 1747. The Security Council has offered Iran the possibility of "suspension for suspension" — suspension of the implementation of measures if and for so long as Iran suspends all of its enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, as verified by the IAEA. We call upon Iran to accept that offer and allow for negotiations in good faith.
4. We urge Iran to engage in a dialogue to create the conditions for negotiations based on our June 2006 proposals for a long-term comprehensive agreement, based on mutual respect, that would reestablish international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program and open the way to wider cooperation between Iran and all our countries. We have asked Dr. Javier Solana, the European Union's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, to meet with Dr. Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, to lay the foundation for future negotiations.
5. We welcome the agreement between Iran and the IAEA to resolve all questions concerning Iran's past nuclear activities. We call upon Iran, however, to produce tangible results rapidly and effectively by clarifying all outstanding issues and concerns on Iran's nuclear program, including topics which could have a military nuclear dimension, as set out by the relevant IAEA Resolutions and UNSC Resolutions 1737 and 1747 and by providing all access required by its Safeguards Agreement and Subsidiary Arrangement and by implementing the Additional Protocol.
6. Full transparency and cooperation by Iran with the IAEA is essential in order to address outstanding concerns. We reiterate our full support for the IAEA and its staff in the execution of its verification role and for the role of the UN Security Council. We look forward to DG El Baradei's November report to the IAEA Board of Governors on the level, scope, and extent of Iran's cooperation and transparency.
7. In view of the fact that Iran has not fulfilled the requirements of UN Security Council Resolutions 1737 and 1747, including the suspension of its enrichment and reprocessing activities, we agree to finalize a text for a third UN Security Council Sanctions Resolution under Article 41 of Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations with the intention of bringing it to a vote in the UN Security Council unless the November reports of Dr. Solana and Dr. El Baradei show a positive outcome of their efforts.
World powers delay Iran sanctions
The outcome was a setback for the United States and France, which had sought swifter action to step up economic and political pressure on Iran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.
A European diplomat involved in the process called it "a victory for unity over haste."
Russia and China opposed an early move to tighten economic sanctions, saying Tehran should be given more time to cooperate with the IAEA to shed light on its past activities.

BUSH INVITED TO SPEAK AT IRANIAN UNIVERSITY
Can you picture it?? Most Americans have a hard time understanding the US President when he speaks (stammers) in America.... can you picture the audience listening to him at an Iranian University?? Is this Ahmadinejad's idea of a joke?? If it is, it's a pretty good one... It wouldn't take much to make Bush look like a fool.... all he has to do is act natural.

"We're very close to stall speed in the economy," says Paul Kasriel, director of economic research at Northern Trust. And it's not just the usual Chicken Littles talking about it: Everyone from top auto executives to normally ebullient tech venture capitalists are making noises about the slowing economy. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, now at hedge fund D. E. Shaw, is adamant that there's a greater than 50% chance of a recession.-cnn money

Increase in Deadly Amoeba Linked to Global Warming
There are a host of diseases and illnesses that are expected to rise with the global temperatures. One of the most deadly is an illness caused by an ameoba called Naegleria fowleri. Six children have died from the amoeba which enters the body through the nasal cavity and eats away at the brain. All of the victims contracted the amoeba while swimming in warm shallow waters of a lake. Michael Beach (yes, his name is Beach), a specialist in recreational water-born illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, linked a sharp increase to warming temperatures particularly in the South. He said that people become infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. People usually experience a stiff neck, headaches and fevers– and later hallucinations and behavioral changes. For the full story, click here

"Mezcal has the worm, not tequilla newbie."
Actually...
"Tequila is a mezcal made from the blue agave plant in the town of Tequila and the surrounding region of Jalisco."
Actually...
back away from your keyboard real real slow. let go of the mouse and nobody (not the nobody) will get hurt...
Actually,
I have agave growing on my ranch in Mexico. That will be what I do if I get to retire. You don't use the worm in making tequila. Mezcal is agave distilled once and has from 5 to 18% alcohol. Only double distillation makes tequila which also greatly increases its proof.
Tequilla is now allowed to grow elsewhere outside of Jalisco with proper licensing.

I meant tequila is now allowed to be distilled elsewhere.
The agave can be brought from almost any part of Mexico.

Debt and the Destruction of America
Of course, fellow citizens, you and I will be asked to pay off the creditors who loaned the money to the government for a war we never asked for or wanted. And, according to our creditors, we (and not just those pod people on Capital Hill) must pay the money back, with interest. If we don't, the creditors will sell our country from under our feet.
I have agave growing on my ranch

Republican Opponents Afraid
Republican Opponents Afraid To Attack Giuliani On 9/11
| Sam Stein | September 28, 2007 12:10 PM
Rudy Giuliani has made his performance on Sept. 11 the dominant pillar of his campaign, a strategy that has proved at once effective and controversial. While the former New York City mayor finds himself atop national polls and well-positioned to capture the Republican nomination, he has also exposed himself to criticism that he is overstating his terrorism credentials and crassly politicizing the issue.
Yet just three months before the first primary vote is cast, none of Giuliani's top-tier primary opponents have taken the bait.
Despite privately acknowledging that there is ample ammunition to attack Giuliani for his handling of and work after 9/11, the GOP presidential frontrunners have been either too cautious or afraid to speak out. Their silence underscores a strategic calculation that Giuliani's 9/11 record will be picked apart by Democrats, and other foes of Rudy; but also a fear that bringing up the terrorism issue could backfire.
"I'm not going to get into it at all because we are not willing to use 9/11 for political purposes," Jeff Sadosky, a spokesman for former senator Fred Thompson, R-TN, told the Huffington Post.
"I could go on all day about that," said Alice Stewart, a spokesperson for former governor Mike Huckabee, R-AK, before asking for time to organize her thoughts and never calling back.
To be sure, there have been multiple opportunities to go after Giuliani on his perceived strong suit. The International Association of Fire Fighters lashed the former mayor for failing to outfit first responders with modern radio equipment and prematurely ending the search for firefighters buried under the 9/11 rubble. Jerry Hauer, who once ran Mayor Giuliani's Office of Emergency Management, called the perception of Giuliani as a terrorism expert a "fabrication" and "lie."
"In the time I worked for Rudy," Hauer told the Huffington Post. "I never heard him talk about Jihadists or Jihadism or Islamic fundamentalists or Hamas, Hezbollah, or al Qaeda... The words al Qaeda never even came out of Rudy's mouth." (Read more below.)

It a mad, mad, mad
I love it!
dan - not at all
you can make like 60 liters from one piña (agave core). And you can drink it as soon as soon as it is distilled which can take only 2 weeks.
The original conquistadors learned to make it and made the Indians into slaves to make it. It was not invented by the indigenous people. I have heritage from both of those groups. They would make a hole in the ground start a fire, wrap the piña in the penca's cover it with dirt for 3 days then press it. I like that the best. Then the distillations. The tricky part is getting the starter and harvesting the yeast that collects on the penca leaf pits.
people dont cross rudy
doesn't he have ties to the mafia?
Tequila and ouzo
both mess wid yer head in different ways.
both have been relegated to the lower portion of my list.
"don't use the worm in making tequila."
Actually, the worm may be added to any form of mezcal...or any other liquor for that matter...Whether it be strictly licensed and labelled correctly or not...What you're saying is true of Mexican Tequila and not necessarily American Tequila...After all the whole damn thing is just a marketing gimmick.

My brudder in law
thats what you said the first time right? or am i reading double already? too much tequila talk i guess...
ya Nobody
the worm is just for marketing always. It isn't required for any part of it but I have never seen a tequila with a worm in it. Mezcal (usually with a worm) is always much cheaper.
If your going to pay tequila prices, real 100% agave tequila prices, you will never find it. never.
Ouzo
Ouzo takes your legs first! Then it moves up to the brain. If you are drinking that, don't stand up fast, your legs are now jelly!

Larry Craig's bathroom stall! Haggard's meth hotel! See all the sites of GOP shame. Fun for kids!
By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist
Friday, September 28, 2007
Tourists are flocking to see the bathroom in the Minneapolis airport where U.S. Sen. Larry Craig was arrested in a sex sting. "It's become a tourist attraction," said Karen Evans, who staffs the information counter at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. "People are taking pictures." -Associated Press
Kids! Families! War-wary countrymen! Adorable schoolchildren! Hungry to see the real America? Love the idea of a crazy road trip across our fine 'n' scandalous land, one in which you get a real taste of just what kind of crow the local politicos get to eat for breakfast?
Well, search no more, good patriot. Your adventure travel package has arrived.
Yes, it's called Shame Tourism. Or maybe Hypocrisy Travel. Or Shame America! Travelocrisy? Honestly, we haven't really decided yet. There are just so many options.
But who cares? Because it's the latest craze in domestic tourism, specially designed for happy cynics and satirists and fatalists and contrarians and atheists and liberals alike, all you savvy fans of "The Daily Show" and DailyKos and the New Republic and the Nation and pretty much anyone who finds delight in learning of yet another bitter BushCo conservative caught with his hands in the tacky polyester pants of his fellow countrymen. Best of all, it's totally free!*
(*Note: does not include additional costs of food, gas, oil, environmental devastation, condoms, souvenir baggies of crystal meth, cocaine, Viagra, hookers, STD meds, or the sad and savage toll on any happy or optimistic outlook you may have deluded yourself into believing actually exists on this planet.)
First stop: Colorado! What better way to kick off your unique vacation than to step onto the stage at the New Life megachurch in Colorado "Bible Thumper" Springs where big-time evangelist and recently born-again heterosexual Ted Haggard admonished his massive flock against adultery and sin and icky gay sex! Watch the replay on the big screen of the famous video clip where Haggard slams homos and adulterers and heathens! It's almost like being a lost evangelical lemming yourself!
