Records Show Bush Pledging Iraq Invasion With or Without U.N. Backing
Pre-War Transcript Reveals Bush Erroneously Optimistic About Post-Saddam Iraq
Weeks before the invasion of Iraq, President Bush told Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar that the attack would go forward with or without a U.N. resolution condemning the government of Saddam Hussein, according to a transcript of the private meeting obtained by a Spanish newspaper.
"This is like Chinese water torture," Bush is quoted as telling Aznar. "We have to put an end to it."
In the private conversation at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas, Feb. 22, 2003, Bush does not contradict his public statements on Iraq, but he is much more direct and specific. Speaking to reporters at his ranch publicly later that same day, Bush left the impression that an invasion of Iraq was not inevitable.
"President Aznar and I agree that the future of peace depends on the disarmament of Iraq," Bush said in the news briefing. "We agree that Saddam Hussein continues to be in violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441. We agree that the terms of that resolution must be fully respected. By Resolution 1441, the Security Council has taken a clear stand and it now faces a clear choice. With all the world watching, the council will now show whether it means what it says."
The transcript of Bush's private conversation with Aznar, taken down by the U.S. ambassador's office, was translated into Spanish by El Pais and posted by the newspaper. The excerpts used in this article have been translated back into English and might vary slightly in wording from the original English version.

Sung In Ragtime
Peter Dragon,
I'm sure that you will remember this song. I wish I had it memorized for opportunities like you had today.
The Vatican Rag by Tom Lehrer
First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff.
Everybody say his own
Kyrie eleison,
Doin' the Vatican Rag.
Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!
So get down upon your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
Ave Maria,
Gee it's good to see ya,
Gettin' ecstatic an'
Sorta dramatic an'
Doin' the Vatican Rag!
sounds like fun Peter,
But I'm in Dallas so puff puff pass bud. (kiddin) Isn't that Rhode Island?

2 Patriot Act Provisions
2 Patriot Act Provisions ruled unlawful By WILLIAM McCALL, Associated Press Writer
7 minutes ago
PORTLAND, Ore. - Two provisions of the USA Patriot Act are unconstitutional because they allow search warrants to be issued without a showing of probable cause, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.
U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken ruled that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, as amended by the Patriot Act, "now permits the executive branch of government to conduct surveillance and searches of American citizens without satisfying the probable cause requirements of the Fourth Amendment."
Portland attorney Brandon Mayfield sought the ruling in a lawsuit against the federal government after he was mistakenly linked by the FBI to the Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people in 2004.
The federal government apologized and settled part of the lawsuit for $2 million after admitting a fingerprint was misread. But as part of the settlement, Mayfield retained the right to challenge parts of the Patriot Act, which greatly expanded the authority of law enforcers to investigate suspected acts of terrorism.
Mayfield claimed that secret searches of his house and office under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act violated the Fourth Amendment's guarantee against unreasonable search and seizure. Aiken agreed with Mayfield, repeatedly criticizing the government.
"For over 200 years, this Nation has adhered to the rule of law — with unparalleled success. A shift to a Nation based on extra-constitutional authority is prohibited, as well as ill-advised," she wrote.
By asking her to dismiss Mayfield's lawsuit, the judge said, the U.S. attorney general's office was "asking this court to, in essence, amend the Bill of Rights, by giving it an interpretation that would deprive it of any real meaning. This court declines to do so."

WASHINGTON — Ohio and Florida, which provided the decisive electoral votes for President Bush's two razor-thin national election triumphs, have enacted laws that election experts say will help Republicans impede Democratic-leaning minorities from voting in 2008.
Backers of the new laws say they're aimed at curbing vote fraud. But the statutes also could facilitate a controversial Republican tactic known as ``vote caging,'' which the GOP attempted in Ohio and Florida in 2004 before public disclosures foiled the efforts, said Joseph Rich, a former Justice Department voting rights chief in the Bush administration who's now with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.

US Video shows hacker hit on power grid By TED BRIDIS and EILEEN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writers
36 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - A government video shows the potential destruction caused by hackers seizing control of a crucial part of the U.S. electrical grid: an industrial turbine spinning wildly out of control until it becomes a smoking hulk and power shuts down.
The video, produced for the Homeland Security Department and obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, was marked "Official Use Only." It shows commands quietly triggered by simulated hackers having such a violent reaction that the enormous turbine shudders as pieces fly apart and it belches black-and-white smoke.
The video was produced for top U.S. policy makers by the Idaho National Laboratory, which has studied the little-understood risks to the specialized electronic equipment that operates power, water and chemical plants. Vice President Dick Cheney is among those who have watched the video, said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because this official was not authorized to publicly discuss such high-level briefings.
"They've taken a theoretical attack and they've shown in a very demonstrable way the impact you can have using cyber means and cyber techniques against this type of infrastructure," said Amit Yoran, former U.S. cybersecurity chief for the Bush administration. Yoran is chief executive for NetWitness Corp., which sells sophisticated network monitoring software.
"It's so graphic," Yoran said. "Talking about bits and bytes doesn't have the same impact as seeing something catch fire."

Another Judge Finds Patriot Act Provisions Unconstitutional
Published September 26th, 2007 Congress , Constitutonal Law , Justice , Supreme Court
U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken added her voice and her court to a growing list of judges who have struck down provisions of the Patriot Act. For the story, click here Aiken is another example of how our tripartite system has been functioning on one branch. Despite such rulings, members of Congress, including Democratic leaders, continue to cave into White House demands on these provisions. The recent baffling extension of the NSA domestic surveillance program is perhaps the greatest example. The problem has been that court of appeals courts tend to be more conservative and the Supreme Court has seen the addition of Associate Justice Sam Alito — who has long shown a blind deference to executive and governmental powers.

CONGRESS FIDDLES WHILE ROME BURNS!
They didn't condemn Vice President Cheney when he falsely connected Al Qaeda to Saddam Hussein.1
They didn't condemn Colin Powell when he lied about WMD to the United Nations.2
They didn't condemn President Bush when he started eavesdropping on American citizens without a warrant.3
They didn't condemn President Bush and the Republicans when they attacked Sen. John Kerry's war record.4
They didn't condemn Sen. Saxby Chambliss when he ran ads comparing triple-amputee and war hero Max Cleland to Osama bin Laden.5
They still haven't done enough to slow this dreadful war or protect our troops.6
But a few hours ago, your representative voted in the House to join the Senate in condemning a MoveOn.org newspaper ad.7
Enough.
----------
Republicans are hoping to use this to destroy us. Some Democrats are so afraid of being attacked that they're joining in a right-wing smear campaign.
Well, they need to know that we're not going to quiet down.
When you call, tell them that we're going to keep giving voice to the majority of Americans who want the war to end. We're going to keep the pressure on every scared Democrat and every pro-war Republican. We're going to demand they stand up—and turn them out of office if they don't. And we will never stand down until we have a majority of Congress with the guts to stand up for what's right.
If it's late where you are and the D.C. office is closed, make sure to call tomorrow.
Thanks for all you do.

DOJ Nominee Mukasey Subject of Marshal Complaint
Published September 26th, 2007 Uncategorized 0 Comments
Former Judge Michael Mukasey was the subject of a complaint by marshals while he was receiving years of security protection. The complaint also appears to refer to Judge Thomas Duffy, who also handled terrorism cases in New York. It is not clear which allegations refer to Mukasey and which refer to Duffy from having marshals carry their grocery to demanding their first class seats on airplanes to generally treating them as servants. O'Reilly to African-Americans: "The far left is using you here"
http://mediamatters.org/items/200709260014
During the September 26 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, responding to a caller's claim that "I don't hear the outrage from African-Americans that they get used a lot" by "media outlets," Bill O'Reilly asserted: "Yeah, you're right, but I don't think they know. I don't think they know. But it's an excellent point you're making." O'Reilly later stated: "The more exposure we can get to this, the more black Americans we can reach ... and say to them, 'They're using you. The far left is using you here.' " O'Reilly was discussing a growing controversy over remarks he made following a dinner with the Rev. Al Sharpton at a Harlem restaurant. On the September 19 broadcast of his radio show, as Media Matters for America documented, O'Reilly said: "I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship."
On the same September 19 show, as Media Matters noted, O'Reilly also said: "I think black Americans are starting to think more and more for themselves. They're getting away from the Sharptons and the [Rev. Jesse] Jacksons and the people trying to lead them into a race-based culture. They're just trying to figure it out: 'Look, I can make it. If I work hard and get educated, I can make it.' "

Sept. 26, 2007 -- SPECIAL REPORT -- Plane that crashed in Yucatan with 3.2 tons of cocaine was CIA rendition aircraft
WMR has learned from knowledgeable European sources that a Gulfstream II that crash landed 1.3 miles from Tikokob in Yucatan, Mexico after being chased by Mexican military helicopters for flying illegally into Mexican airspace was one of the planes chartered to the CIA for the renditioning of kidnapped prisoners. The crash landing took place on September 24. The tail number of the Gulfstream is N987SA.
Mexican soldiers found no bodies at the crash site but did discover 132 bags containing 3.3 metric tons of cocaine. The origination of the Gulfstream's flight is unknown but it was destined for Cancun when it crash landed. Police later said they had arrested one passenger who was on board the plane.
The operator of the Gulfstream is Donna Blue Aircraft, Inc. of Coconut Creek, Florida. Its address, according to the Florida Division of Corporations, is 4811 Lyons Technology, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073.
On June 10, 2006, WMR reported that the N987SA Grumman G-1159, Gulfstream II, was operated by S/A Holdings LLC and had been involved in the renditioning of prisoners to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
On April 21, 2006, WMR reported on a similar incident involving a plane connected with the U.S. government: "On April 10, Mexican police, acting on a tip from INTERPOL, seized a DC-9 aircraft carrying 5.5 tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of $100 million. The U.S.-registered plane was en route from Caracas, Venezuela, which, according to French intelligence, is a known hub for cocaine shipments from Colombia to Saudi Arabia. The DC-9 (registration number N900SA) made an emergency landing at Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche state. A Falcon aircraft that arrived at Ciudad del Carmen from Toluca airport in Mexico state in advance of the arrival of the DC-9 was also seized. The cocaine was contained in 128 suitcases. The Mexican police later claimed the unidentified DC-9's pilot managed to escape. However, the police did arrest the co-pilot. The DC-9 was painted in the familiar blue and white colors of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration with am official-looking seal with an American eagle bearing the inscription: 'Sky Way Aircraft - Protection of America's Skies.' The registered owner of the aircraft is: Royal Sons Inc., 15875 Fairchild Drive, Clearwater, Florida."

GAO Report: Walter Reed Problems Have Not Been Fixed
Posted September 26, 2007 | 08:32 PM (EST)
Remember Walter Reed? After the huge scandal last spring, President Bush and the members of Congress promised to improve troops' care. They promised to take action and get our wounded veterans the care they were waiting for. They promised to make things right. Well, that promise has been broken.
This week, we got definitive proof that our nation's wounded veterans are still waiting for government leaders to deliver much needed resources. According to a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the response to shoddy outpatient treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been woefully inadequate.
This latest report joins the increasing chorus of bipartisan commissions, independent review groups, and task forces which all confirm that the DoD and the VA are ill-prepared to meet the needs of returning servicemembers. Among its findings, the GAO concluded that there has been little progress in rectifying staffing shortfalls, facilitating VA/DoD data sharing, and streamlining disability evaluation systems. Processing disability payments still takes an average of 177 days. Furthermore, efforts to improve the care provided to servicemembers with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have also been largely unsuccessful: only 6 of the Army's 32 Warrior Transition Units had completed training for all staff. (You can read the complete report here.)
The bottom line: the problems of Walter Reed have not been fixed. Not even close. More than seven months have passed since the major problems were revealed by the Washington Post-- and after seven months, our veterans continue to wait. While Congress and the President went on vacation this summer, people like my courageous friend Annette McLeod and her wounded husband Wendell were paying the price for our governments negligence. Our nation's heroes and their families deserve better.

Bill Clinton rips GOP with memories of 'swift boat' campaign David Edwards and Greg Wasserstrom
Published: Wednesday September 26, 2007
Former president Bill Clinton passionately shared his thoughts on the House vote to condemn progressive group MoveOn.org over a controversial newspaper ad on CNN's Situation Room.
"There was something completely disingenuous about the feigned outrage of the Republicans and the White House and then the Congress about this. This was classic bait and switch," Clinton said, later adding, "focus on that as opposed to focusing on what's happened [in Iraq]."
Clinton's charges of political posturing reached a high level of specificity in his discussion of the elections in 2002 and 2004. Both years saw the Republicans expand their majorities in Congress and then the re-election of President Bush.
"These are the people that ran a television ad in Georgia with [former Senator] Max Cleland, who lost half his body in Vietnam, in the same ad with Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. That's what the Republicans did, Clinton said. "And the person that rode to the senate on that ad was there voting to condemn the Democrats over the Petraeus ad. I mean, these are the people that funded the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."
The following video is from CNN's Situation Room, broadcast on September 26.

Dollar hovers near fresh record low against euro 2 hours, 39 minutes ago
The dollar hovered near a new record low against the euro Wednesday amid growing concerns about the US economy and expectations the Federal Reserve will further cut interest rates.
The euro stood at 1.4125 dollars around 2100 GMT in New York, down from 1.4135 late Tuesday. The single European currency earlier had surged to a record-high 1.4162 dollars at the beginning of the Asian trading session.
The dollar was at 115.57 yen, up from 114.77 yen late Tuesday in New York.
"The US dollar is struggling to recover ahead of tomorrow's figures for final second-quarter GDP (gross domestic product) and new-home sales," said Kathy Lien, chief currency strategist at Forex Capital Markets.
Lien said that investors are betting the Fed will slash another half percentage point from its federal funds rate by the end of the year, "and tomorrow's data will go a long way in confirming or denying that."
"Growth was hot in the second quarter, but it could be revised down to as much as 3.6 percent" from the prior upward revision to 4.0 percent from 3.4 percent, she said. Analysts' consensus forecast is for a pace of 3.9 percent.
"The dollar hit another record low against the euro of 1.4162 in early trading today as market participants continue to focus on the prospect of monetary easing in the US," said Derek Halpenny, senior currency economist at The Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi.
In recent weeks, the euro has been boosted by the prospect of more US rate cuts and higher eurozone borrowing costs, which would make the single currency a more attractive investment, dealers said.
The US Federal Reserve slashed its key rate by a hefty half point last week to 4.75 percent to ease tight credit markets. The European Central Bank's key rate is at 4.0 percent.

August durables drop
August durables drop sharpest since Jan By Glenn Somerville
Wed Sep 26, 12:22 PM ET
New orders for costly U.S.-made manufactured goods dropped at the sharpest rate in seven months during August, according to a government report which added to signs growth was slowing in the third quarter.
Durable goods orders overall plummeted 4.9 percent in August, Commerce Department data showed, with declines in nearly every major category.
The fall was steeper than the 3.1 percent decline Wall Street economists had forecast, but followed an upwardly revised 6.1 percent increase in July that left analysts confident the economy was not headed into a precipitous decline.
"The notion the economy is in freefall because of the housing market slowdown is not being validated by these numbers," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Equity Markets in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Analysts are watching whether problems in U.S. subprime mortgage markets that other nations in Europe and elsewhere say are affecting them will pull U.S. and global growth down. U.S. housing data this week showed the industry remained under pressure.
Bond prices initially edged higher after the durable goods report in a sign of investor caution but gave up the gains as investors moved to stocks, which were bolstered by hopes for more interest-rate cuts.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress last week that the U.S. central bank was aiming to "get out ahead of" the potential economic drag from deteriorating credit conditions by cutting official interest rates a half percentage point on September 18.
Richard Huber, an economist with A.G. Edwards and Sons Inc in St. Louis, said that while it appeared growth was slowing, there was no evidence yet to support a view that it might deteriorate into a more serious downturn.

Scarborough: Fox's coverage of O'Reilly's comments suggests he "has nothing to do with" controversy
http://mediamatters.org/items/200709270002
On the September 26 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough, co-anchor Mika Brzezinski, and MSNBC correspondent Willie Geist discussed Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's response to criticism of his recent statement, documented by Media Matters for America, that "I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant [in Harlem] and any other restaurant in New York City. It was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks [and has a] primarily black patronship." Scarborough noted that he had discussed O'Reilly's comments on the previous day's edition of Morning Joe and responded: "I don't think that we're mischaracterizing it at all to say O'Reilly was surprised that a restaurant run by people of color was almost just like a normal restaurant." Scarborough added that O'Reilly "didn't mean to be racist, it just shows that his worldview is so closed that, apparently, he has not been in ethnic neighborhoods in the past." Scarborough also noted Fox News' reaction to the criticism of O'Reilly, noting at one point that "Fox has been coming up with some pretty, pretty crazy banners" for on-screen text to describe the story and highlighted several of them, including one stating "CNN gets suckered by website." Scarborough added, "Of course, Bill O'Reilly has nothing to do with this at all. He didn't cause this at all."
Discussing O'Reilly's charge that he was taken out of context, Geist highlighted O'Reilly's comment during his discussion of Sylvia's on September 19 that "I went to the concert by Anita Baker at Radio City Music Hall, and the crowd was 50/50, black/white, and the blacks were well-dressed," Scarborough responded: "[W]e don't want to distort Bill O'Reilly's words at all, especially when you talk about racial issues, but I think, for instance, again, looking at the totality of it all ... why does Bill O'Reilly even feel the need to tell us that people at the Anita Baker concert that were people of color were well-dressed?"
Additionally, discussing Fox News' response to CNN and NBC's coverage of O'Reilly's comments, Scarborough noted that on-screen text during the September 26 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends First read: "CNN suckered by leftist website," adding, "[T]he banners that Fox News is spitting out on this Bill O'Reilly thing is -- it's just great. It's like, 'CNN suckered by leftist website.' Of course, this is the network that reports and lets you decide."
And the flagpole has a good ol' Murikan flag on it...
and it's being held out the window by a NYSE employee and Bush.

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.
Well, for example, the other day I went down town and into a shop. I was only there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
I said to him, "Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a
break?" He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.
I called him a "Nazi." He glared at me and wrote another ticket for
having worn tires.
So I called him a "doughnut eating Gestapo."
He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.
Then he wrote a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The
more I abused him the more tickets he wrote.
Personally, I didn't care. I came downtown on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said "Hillary in'08."
I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important to my health.
He is talking now

Speaking for myself only, it went like this.
I read about Limbaugh in Time magazine sometime around 1987. I was in the Caribbean and insulated from his nonsense, so he was a mere curiosity to me and a small piece in the stateside puzzle of which I was trying to stay abreast.
Then, in 1989, cable TV came to my area. I watched Limbaugh's television show once or twice to see what all of the fuss was about. It was torture. He was boring; Al Franken called it on the money in his book "Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot." Limbaugh didn't move me in any way. He was boring. Apparently I wasn't the only viewer to think so. Limbaugh's TV show died a merciful death.
Years later I was stateside and doing some remodeling on my shop building. Between my crappy radio and my remote location, my listening choices were Country Pop, Contemporary Pop (or whatever the Top 40 is called these days), relentless oldie loops of Jumping Jack Flash and Don't Fear The Reaper, or Talk Radio. So I heard three hours of Rush Limbaugh on weekdays for more than two summer months.
The saturation did the trick. Now I can handle five minutes of Limbaugh but no more, but not because he upsets me. He bores me. I can predict his words. I can mimic him. I know what he is going to say before he says it. His parody songs stink. His skit humor wouldn't make it through the Tuesday cut at a Groundlings rehearsal.
I have to admit that I did not predict his hearing loss due to a Hillbilly Heroin addiction. He scored big with that one. It was the funniest thing that I have ever heard.
What? I SAID, IT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING I EVER HEARD.
From Americablog - I love their cattyness!
9:28 p.m. John Edwards went after Hillary Clinton hard for supporting Lieberman's Iraq resolution. Very hard. Equated her vote for that resolution with her vote for the Iraq war.
And is it me, or is Tim Russert a mess tonight? He looks like he needs a hair wash and a hair cut...and he's sweating up a storm...
9:36 p.m. The Democratic answers on immigration are so much more reasonable, sensible and human then the immigrant bashing that occurs at GOP debates.
9:52 p.m. Health care. Wow. That was a tough go-round. The knives were out for Clinton on that one. Health care clearly is the most important domestic issue. And Biden with that "other stuff" about Bill Clinton in the 90s...hmmm, that "other stuff" was political.
10:00 p.m. Gay question. Couched in the guise of a controversy about a story for second graders. Keep in mind that in New England, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont all have civil unions. Massachusetts allows gay marriage. Edwards, Obama and Clinton were asked. Obama and Edwards gave very strong answers. Clinton's wasn't quite as clear.
10:29 p.m. Okay, Social Security..I get the reasons for that discussion obviously. Maybe even the smoking question given its significance as a health issue. But do the Presidential candidates really need to weigh in on the drinking age?

I have a Luddite image to maintain. If you can get your hands on a cursive writing textbook circa 1925, we can negotiate. (I'd like to have the white-on-green, six-inch by twelve-inch cursive alphabet cards that I stared at over the blackboard for seven long years, too.)

it's not supposed to have a winner - the way I see it, just an opportunity to get a sense of where each of them stands or is like; i like edwards the best - i like his policies and he's the best looking one :) had a sex dream about him once, but I liked him even before that. I was not rooting for him in 2004, but so much has happened since
kucinich is the one who always gets a chuckle from the audience - he's quick on the wit and I like that. He's also the closest to my philosophical views of life
i used to be against obama for various reasons, but I am starting to like him.
so my favorites for the primary are 1) edwards 2) dodd 3)kucinich 4) obama. Hillary is the only one I will NOT vote for if she is the candidate. I cannot watch her or hear her, makes my skin crawl, not unlike when I watch and hear a bush - the fakeness is palpable - she even uses some of the republican mannerisms like "i don't answer hypothetical" "You'd have to ask him" "I don't disclose my private discussions with him" she's a republican without a doubt and i do not like republicans.
While I was watching her I was thinking of a time when she was first lady and the republicans hated her because they saw her as power hungry, and unfeminine for being smart and they loathed her because they thought she was influencing the president, the seat of power, and that was repulsive to them, that a woman would have power or want it....in those days I did like her. Now it's reversed, the republicans like her and I don't - very strange stuff

When Boring Becomes Exciting
Alice,
Yes! Real bookworms! I bought the dictionary at a friend's junk shop in the Caribbean. It has several very neatly bored holes in it approximately one millimeter in diameter that pass diagonally through the several hundred pages. There are six holes that begin in the hardback front cover.
Maybe they were drilled by termites? I don't know. It's the only book I have that was partially eaten. The holes are slightly larger than the size of a period on your screen.

Remember the Minneapolis Bridge Collapse?
The MSM hasn't said much about this lately. Probably because of the Republican governor's political posturing that is going on. Here's a letter that appeared in the StarTribune today. The writer is our local talk show host on Air America Minnesota:
Governor looking to avoid the blame
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has spent $2 million to hire Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) to lead The Minnesota Department of Transportation's investigation into the cause of the I-35W bridge collapse. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is already conducting a thorough investigation. So, why would a self-proclaimed "fiscal conservative" spend the additional money for another report?
Simple. Pawlenty needs cover to protect his national political ambitions. He doesn't want any blemishes on his record, like an unfavorable report from the NTSB indicating that his years of neglecting Minnesota's transportation infrastructure was the primary cause of the collapse.
So, Pawlenty has hired his own investigative consultants to provide him with that cover. Their "independent" report will likely blame pigeon poop or funding for hiking trails as the root cause of the collapse. They'll praise Pawlenty's courageous response to the tragedy and resolve in moving the state forward.
And the governor will point to the report anytime a reporter or voter has the audacity to ask him why an interstate bridge fell down in his state after he vetoed transportation bills and signed pledges never to increase investment.
Our transportation system sits in neglect, while Pawlenty spends $2 million to protect his political ambitions.

book lice
Psocoptera
An order of insects frequently referred to as the Corrodentia, or Copeognatha. Common names for members of this order are book lice, bark lice, and psocids, the latter a general term for all members of the order. They are usually less than 0.25 in. (0.6 cm) long, though rarely some may reach about 0.5 in. (1.2 cm). Wings may be absent, and when present are of differing distinctive venational types. Tarsi are two- or three-segmented, cerci are absent and metamorphosis is gradual. Chewing mouthparts usually have a much enlarged clypeus; the lacinia of the maxilla is usually elongate and chisellike, and the antennae have 13 or more segments.
Book lice are most common among old papers on dusty shelves, in cereals, or other domestic situations. They are usually pale, wingless types of insects. Many bark lice, the majority winged, occur on the bark or foliage of trees, and some are found under dead bark or beneath stones. Nymphs of a few species occur on tree trunks as clusters of gregarious individuals, but disperse when mature.
Psocoptera are worldwide, especially in warm countries, and some 1300 species are known. Current classification now lists about 27 families for this group. About 150 species, in 11 families, have been found in the United States. See also Insecta.
Alice
I think she would win against a Republican, but I think they are likely pumping her because 1) She IS a Republican or has similar views; and 2)The Republicans believe she will help the Republicans running across the country (for other offices) in 2008 as they will have a great thing to rally against in their campaign speeches. Boxer-Inhofe global warming
Boxer-Inhofe global warming rematch. Today, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works held a hearing about global warming’s impact on the Chesapeake Bay. Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), a proud climate skeptic, loudly objected to the fact that Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) was going to testify, but was quickly put down by the chair of the committee, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA). The Politico’s Ryan Grim reports:
Inhofe, with staff already present, responds that he’ll agree to allow the Maryland senator to stay if Boxer will concede it as a one-time-only deviation.
“Senator, I’m not going to agree to that,” she says. “I’m the chairman of this committee and I’ve spoken to you about this. You knew this was coming. I asked Sen. Mikulski to join us. If that’s not enough, I went back to the parliamentarian. There is absolutely no rule that forbids this.” […]
Mikulski cuts in. “We need to focus on the issue of global warming and the impact on the bay,” she says, “and not on myself. I yield to the ruling of the chair.”
Inhofe, though, is no longer chair. “Well, the ruling of the chair, if I had a chance to rule,” says Boxer, the chair, “would be that you will be joining us.”
In March, Inhofe threw a similar fit at a global warming hearing, objecting to the testimony of Al Gore. At that time Boxer also shot him down, stating, “Elections have consequences. So I make the rules.”

What a concept. Tom Allen wants Congress to do its real work. The Republicans want to play political games. Still playing politics over Iraq cause that's what GOPers do. Tom Allen will make a great United States Senator:
"I respect General Petraeus and honor all of our troops. They have done a phenomenal job and done everything that we have asked of them. General Petraeus is a soldier who simply takes orders from the Commander-in-Chief, President Bush.
Unfortunately the President and his Republican allies in Congress have continued to order General Petraeus and the rest of our troops to continue fighting. What we need is a plan to bring our troops home.
I voted against this resolution today because I believe it is the job of the Congress to bring our troops home, not legislate free speech."
We will never, ever see that kind of strong statement from Bush's loyal toadie, Susan Collins. She doesn't stand for anything -- except whatever Bush says.
And, by the way, if Congress is so outraged about speech, where's the resolution condemning John Boehner's disgusting comment about the loss of life in Iraq?

Syrian Nukes?
I just saw the replay of Hillary's response to the Iran-Israel nuclear strike question. And what struck me is that she seemed to confirm the theory that the Israeli strike in Syria was on a nuclear facility the Syrians had built with help from the North Koreans. I don't think I've seen any government official or member of Congress confirm that and I still find it highly suspicious. What'd she hear?

Iran strengthens ties with South America's leftist regimes
Vilified by world leaders wary of his nuclear ambitions, Iran's president is turning to South American leftists who are embracing him as an energy and trade partner and counterweight to US influence.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was headed to Bolivia Thursday to establish first-time diplomatic relations with the Andean nation.
He and President Evo Morales were expected to sign accords that Bolivian officials say could help them better tap the continent's second-largest natural gas reserves after Venezuela's and drum up urgently needed agricultural investment.
Ahmadinejad is then Caracas-bound to meet Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
On the heels of a UN General Assembly appearance in which he exacerbated concerns about Iranian bellicosity, Ahmadinejad's trip south underscores his strengthening links to Latin American nations also including Nicaragua and Ecuador even as the United States tries to isolate him internationally.

Ohio, Florida laws could dampen Democratic voting
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/19982.html
WASHINGTON — Ohio and Florida, which provided the decisive electoral votes for President Bush's two razor-thin national election triumphs, have enacted laws that election experts say will help Republicans impede Democratic-leaning minorities from voting in 2008.
...
A federal court injunction has barred the Republican National Committee for 25 years from engaging in racially targeted vote caging, but it doesn't extend to state parties.
Asked whether they might employ vote caging in 2008, Executive Director Jason Mauk of the Ohio Republican Party and spokeswoman Erin VanSickle of the Florida Republican Party said they couldn't discuss election strategy.

I hope and pray the best for them really, but in earnest.
Often, every single time, really.... they lie.
Even if they are young and powered by the popularist movements they lie big time. How many have you really studied? Go back to Socialist Lenin even. It all becomes so corrupt. I've had a few beers. So I'll leave it at that. They lie, they always do. Their promises never come true. Some in my family have been jailed defending them thinking they spoke truth. Decades later we see how it was all a lie.
America is truly a great country and I don't even know how to put it in words how great this country is.

Superman, Hitler and Frankenstein survive Chavez
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/114625.html
Across Latin America, there are people registered with names like Hitler, Lenin, Superman, Frankenstein or even the much less threatening Mickey Mouse. There are names like Burger King and even Burguer King (with the extra u, as the brand would be pronounced in Spanish), Voltaire and Volter, Yoni (from Johnny) and Maiquel (from Michael).
The government of controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez caused a stir recently by formally introducing a bill to restrict the creativity of parents in naming their children, and the authorities in Ecuador and other countries have attempted to do likewise.
But it is at best bound to take a while. The Chavez administration, for one, had to withdraw its proposed bill. The practice has deep roots and belongs to regional traditions, and it makes Spanish-language classics like Juan or Ana sound like a person's parents really did not try hard enough to find a good name for their child.
Across Latin America, there are people with names like Etcetera, Coito (the Spanish word for sexual intercourse) or Espiritu Santo (holy spirit), alongside many called John or Robert Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jefferson, Washington or Napoleon.
In Venezuela, names like Air Jordan, Yesaidu (a variant of "yes, I do") and Maiparner (from the English "my partner") are not even rare. There are people named Hochiminh (the late Vietnamese leader), Yusnavy (from "US Navy") and even Makgiber (from the TV character McGyver).
The practice is by no means new. Jailed terrorist Carlos the Jackal, the Venezuelan-born notorious terrorist for decades as a member of the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine (PFLP,) was given the name Ilich (after Lenin's name in Spanish) Ramirez Sanchez, and his two brothers were called Vladimir and Lenin.
The country's star footballer of the 1990s was Stalin Rivas, there is a legislator named Iroshima (Japan's nuclear-bombed city) Bravo who works alongside colleagues with apparently made-up names like Maigualida, Aleydis and Zark.
The practice is common in other Latin American countries. Cuban boxers with names like Erislandy, Yuriorkis and Odlanier have made headlines in recent months, and the country has produced Olympic medallists in athletics called Osleidys, Yipsy and Anier.
Other names have comic intent: Yotuel (formed by putting together the Spanish pronouns meaning I, you and he), Yanaci (from the Spanish "ya naci," "I was born") and Usmail (from "US Mail") are striking, as are the more universally graphic Danger and Alien.
In Mexico, there are people called Onecent (pronounced in Spanish) and One Dolar (with one "l"), and several citizens have been registered with the name Masiosare, derived from the national anthem verse "Mas si osare un extrano enemigo" (If a foreign enemy dared).
Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba or Ecuador have for decades featured striking names. The practice is most common in rural areas, and is particularly popular in certain regions, like Venezuela's Zulia, Ecuador's Manabi and Mexico's Tabasco.
In some towns, like Chone in Ecuador, people appear to compete with each other for the most outrageous names, resulting in ID cards for Ali Baba Cardenas, Mary Nissan Loor and Land Rover Garcia.
Chavez may well be right and some stricter regulations may indeed be in order across the region. But going back to Jose and Maria would be dull.

I only choose to believe or not believe what is portrayed in the online media..I've never met either one...I have no direct experience....Though I did watch Tipper and Al and Bill and Hill dance with eachother on stage at their 2nd inaugural..
I have had doubts about wanting anyone to lead for more than the law allows..here and in Venezuela and Cuba...However...Evo explains that the people make the final decision... and if they don't want em for the next term they vote them out - but if they do they have the option.
Four or 8 years is NOT enough time to get a grip on let alone solve this country's issues...so I can see the logic..

Israel's leading writers demand talks with Hamas on a ceasefire
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article2998937.ece
A group of Israel's most influential writers – including David Grossman, Amos Oz and A B Yehoshua – have called on the government to open talks with Hamas on a ceasefire in Gaza.
Yehoshua, one of Israel's most revered novelists, underpinned the call yesterday by pointing out that Israel had "many times" negotiated in the past with its sworn enemies.
The 11 writers have signed a petition urging Ehud Olmert's government to negotiate to end both the militant rocket attacks on Israel and the frequent air strikes and military incursions into Gaza by the Israeli military. The conflict has repeatedly cost Palestinian –including civilian – lives in recent weeks as well as bringing misery to the western Negev border town of Sderot because of persistent Qassam attacks.

I've written this response several times and its only getting more obtuse.
Research it again. You say you started paying attention with Ford so you were there when Al participated. Perspectives are one thing. Facts are another. I see you don't believe government reports. Plenty of reports coming in on the protests in Myanmar including reports of even more violence by the government security forces, attempts by the government to provoke violence between Buddhists and Muslims, searches for members of the international press and massive arrests. The Guardian has excellent coverage with links to multiple blogs that are providing regular updates. The junta has been attempting to shut down bloggers, unsuccessfully so far, who are still managing to distribute photos, video and regular updates.

More lead tainted toys being recalled
by Chris in Paris · 9/27/2007 04:58:00 AM ET
It's almost as though the effort in the 1970s to remove lead from paint had never happened. Industry, always looking for a way to cut corners and make an extra few pennies, is either absolutely stupid or they are just are simply despicable. If they didn't know they were buying lead-tainted products that would be sold to children, they should have known or else this calls into question their ability to properly run a business. It also raises yet another example of industry failing to self regulate and begging Congress to step in and provide guidance.
When businesses outsource production to the cheapest provider, what do they think they are receiving? Just because China doesn't care about safety regulations, that's an issue for China that will have to be addressed within their own country. We should expect a lot more from our own country, both in terms of regulation as well as minimum quality standards. The recall of 600,000 toys is not the first and will not be the last such recall and it's clear that the US is going to have to step up the regulation of what is being sold. Just because the GOP wants to live in another era where anything goes doesn't mean we have to accept it.

FROM Earth&Sky: (there is a grand pix also, but haven't learned yet ... I am just trying to "play" with "2d Life" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAEEK) Contrary to legend, the Harvest Moon isn't really bigger, or brighter or yellower than other full moons. What's different about the Harvest Moon is that - every autumn - the moon's path across the sky makes a narrow angle with the evening horizon. It's simply a fact of nature, one with a beautiful result. The moon's path in autumn causes the full moon to rise near the time of sunset for several evenings in a row, appearing big, bright and yellow each night.

"Childrens do learn," Bush tells school kids
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Offering a grammar lesson guaranteed to make any English teacher cringe, President George W. Bush told a group of New York school kids on Wednesday: "Childrens do learn."
Bush made his latest grammatical slip-up at a made-for-TV event where he urged Congress to reauthorize the No Child Left Behind Act, the centerpiece of his education policy, as he touted a new national report card on improved test scores.

The total number of marijuana arrests in the U.S. for 2006 far exceeded the total number of arrests in the U.S. for all violent crimes combined, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
Annual marijuana arrests have nearly tripled since the early 1990s.

U.S. builds military base in Iraq-Iran border
www.chinaview.cn 2007-09-27 03:26:36 Print
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. military is building a base "within shouting distance" of Iran in the border areas of Iraq, ABC News reported Wednesday.
U.S. officials described the move as "an extraordinary step" to curb the smuggling of Iranian weapons into Iraq, but the media sphere already smelled the "odor of war."
Namely Combat Outpost Shocker, the base hardly comes as a pleasant surprise to Iran that the United States will have a new base just 8 km from their border.
Col. Mark Mueller, of the 3rd U.S. Army Infantry Division, said it is the first time the U.S. military will be that close to Iran.

Gen. Pace: Homosexual acts immoral
WASHINGTON - Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, caused a stir at a Senate hearing Wednesday when he said he believes homosexual activity is immoral and should not be condoned by the military.
Pace, who retires next week, said he was seeking to clarify similar remarks he made in spring, which he said were misreported.
"Are there wonderful Americans who happen to be homosexual serving in the military? Yes," he told the Senate Appropriations Committee during a hearing focused on the Pentagon's 2008 war spending request.
"We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it," he added. "And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

Kucinich: Congress Must Stop Funding The War
Washington, Sep 26 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), issued the following statement after opposing H.J.Res. 52, the continuing resolution for FY2007:
“We do not have to fund the war. The Democratic leadership must tell the President NO to any additional funding. We can separately appropriate money to bring the troops home. The only thing required is honesty, integrity and a willingness to end the war,” Kucinich said.

Shootings by Blackwater Exceed Other Firms in Iraq
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 — The American security contractor Blackwater USA has been involved in a far higher rate of shootings while guarding American diplomats in Iraq than other security firms providing similar services to the State Department, according to Bush administration officials and industry officials.
...The State Department keeps reports on each case in which weapons were fired by security personnel guarding American diplomats in Iraq. Officials familiar with the internal State Department reports would not provide the actual statistics, but they indicated that the records showed that Blackwater personnel were involved in dozens of episodes in which they had resorted to force.

Mother Jones Bares Hillary Clinton's Cross
It is no secret at The American Liberalism Project; we are waiting for Gore to announce. Meanwhile, of course, we are wondering if he will consider the odds of being swiftboated to death and decline. That thought brings up the question of whether any of the others are unworthy of our support.
It has seemed to us that Democrats enjoy an embarrassment of riches. Virtually all of the candidates are bright, earnest, accomplished, and savvy people, even those with slender experience and especially those with wide experience in executive and legislative roles. It has always been, for us, a question of which to choose as the VP runningmate. I had eliminated one or two before reading this article in Mother Jones, and now I have eliminated another.

U.S. Needs ‘Long-Term Presence’ in Iraq, Gates Says
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told Congress on Wednesday that he envisioned keeping five combat brigades in Iraq as a “long-term presence.”
Mr. Gates told the Senate Appropriations Committee, “When I speak of a long-term presence, I’m thinking of a very modest U.S. presence with no permanent bases, where we can continue to go after Al Qaeda in Iraq and help the Iraqi forces.”
The Appropriations Committee chairman, Senator Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat from West Virginia, responded with blistering criticism of the administration’s Iraq strategy and warned that his panel would not “rubber stamp” Mr. Bush’s requests for war financing.
“The president and his supporters claim that we’re now finally on the cusp of progress and that we must continue to stay the course,” Mr. Byrd said. “I’ve heard that before. Call me a skeptic, but we have heard this tune before. Yes, haven’t we?”

Eliot Spitzer threat to sue Bush on immigrants' health care
Gov. Spitzer threatened to sue the Bush administration yesterday for refusing to pay for crucial medical care for new immigrants - and criticized it for meddling in his plan to give illegal immigrants a driver's license.
"Let us not use artificial barriers, whether it is the entrance to a hospital or access to a driver's license as a false mechanism for enforcing a law that the federal government has failed to enforce," he said.
Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff's spokesman told the Daily News the agency is still reviewing the governor's plan but "there should be no uncertainty about the fact that state-issued driver's licenses in our country today are a known vulnerability."
Spitzer said Chertoff shouldn't interfere.
He snipped that Chertoff should "get the regs out, do your job, pay attention to what you are supposed to be doing."

"United States wanted to ignore the IAEA"
US, Russia Spar Over Iran Sanctions
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov exchanged sharp words Wednesday as the Bush administration tried to cement support for new U.N. sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programs.
Rice and Lavrov disagreed on the matter at a German-hosted luncheon of foreign ministers from the G-8 group of industrialized nations, according to Lavrov and U.S. and European diplomats present. Another participant, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed, called the exchange "very emotional."
Lavrov told The Associated Press that he had strong words with Rice about whether the time was right for new sanctions when the IAEA has struck an agreement with Iran about its past activities.
Lavrov said the United States wanted to ignore the IAEA — as it has in the past.

Rangel’s heart tells him to undo some tax cuts
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), who has repeatedly dodged questions on how he would handle the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, is now acknowledging that he wants to abolish them for wealthy taxpayers.
Earlier this year, the Ways and Means Committee chairman voted for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) budget resolution that called for repealing the cuts on the top two rates as well as on capital gains and dividends. Asked about his vote in an interview last week, Rangel conceded his preference for rolling back the cuts while insisting that he still doesn’t know what he would do in 2010, when the majority of the cuts expire.
“From time to time, my roots come up and I let you know where my heart is, but I cannot tell you where my votes will be,” he told The Hill.

As white supremacist
As white supremacist publishes home addresses of civil rights leaders, FBI mum Jason Rhyne
Published: Thursday September 27, 2007
The white supremacist who posted the home addresses of five members of the so-called "Jena 6" on a website says he also plans to reveal the personal information of Rev. Jesse Jackson. He has already posted what he claims are addresses for Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III on his blog, which also carries the Jena addresses.
"I know where Sharpton lives," Bill White, head of the American National Socialist Workers Party, said in a phone interview late Sunday night. "Jesse Jackson, too."
On his blog, which is part of Google's Blogger network, White published four separate addresses for Sharpton, including a listing that purported to be the home of the reverend's mother.
An Atlanta address and phone number were listed for Mr. King.
King, Sharpton and Jackson have all been vocal supporters of six black teenagers charged last year with beating a white teenager at a high school in Jena, Louisiana. Prior to the incident, the school had been the site of mounting racial tensions, including the hanging of nooses from a tree on campus.
Sharpton tells Raw: FBI efforts aren't being taken seriously
"That addresses for my residencies and offices are now publicly listed on the web page of the Neo-Nazi group that continues to list the addresses of the Jena Six and their families is outrageous," said Rev. Sharpton in an email statement on Tuesday to RAW STORY.
Sharpton added that the new development "shows they are now tagging leaders that have come to the aid of the Jena Six."
"This illustrates why FBI efforts aren't taken seriously," he continued, referring to a recent announcement from the FBI that it was launching a probe into White's website. "We are in Washington, DC, today asking for intervention by the federal government because this is tantamount to mocking them. It also jeopardizes me and those that travel with me."
The FBI's Washington press office, which had no comment about White's latest actions, referred Raw Story's inquiry to the bureau's New Orleans office. A call there was not immediately returned.
Following up on a story from the the Associated Press, which reported it had been unable to contact the extremist leader for comment regarding his publication of the Jena teens' addresses, RAW STORY reached White by telephone at his Roanoke home late Sunday night.
During the call, White stopped short of directly calling for violence against the three civil rights activists, saying only that it was important that those angered by the leaders' support for the Jena students "knew where to find them."
"I'm just going to put the information up there so people can tell them how they feel," he said, adding that he had just spoken with members of his "Illinois unit" about "going outside of Jesse Jackson's house."
White was far less cautious in discussing his posting last week of address and phone information for the five teenagers charged with beating 17-year-old fellow student Justin Barker.
"If they're acquitted," White said of the black teens, "they should be murdered. Hang them in the public square."
"If the legal system should fail," he continued, "then clearly there would be no law against murder, and it should be legal to go and lynch them."
Civil rights expert: White may be a 'pig,' but probably broke no laws
As incendiary as White's tactics and comments may be, the Southern Poverty Law Center's Mark Potok says it's unlikely authorities have much of a case.
"White understands the First Amendment pretty well. He's a pig, but I think it's pretty clear that what he's done is legal," Potok said, although he was quick to point out he is not a lawyer.

Peru deal gaining momentum among Democrats
By Ian Swanson
September 27, 2007
Democratic support for a trade agreement with Peru appears to be building despite spirited opposition from critics, who ripped into the deal at a Wednesday caucus meeting on trade.
The hour-long meeting was requested by the House Trade Working Group, which has complained that no hearing on the deal has been held since Democrats regained control of Congress. It asked for the meeting in a Sept. 21 letter to Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.).
Founding member Rep. Mike Michaud (D-Maine) and other Working Group members exchanged arguments with Ways and Means panel Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) on the merits of the agreement during the closed session. Both sides also have circulated detailed policy papers among the Democratic Caucus arguing their positions.

Did US spies let bin Laden
Did US spies let bin Laden slip through their grasp again? David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Published: Thursday September 27, 2007
A US spy plane picked up some "tantalizing" clues last month indicating where terror leader Osama bin Laden or his deputy might be hiding, but intelligence officials were unable to move quickly enough to capture or kill the al Qaeda mastermind, NBC News reported Thursday.
"The sighting came in the rugged mountain passes of Tora Bora," NBC correspondent Jim Miklaszewski reported on the Today Show.
An unmanned spy plane spotted a large security contingent similar in size to one that would guard bin Laden or his No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, although intelligence officials were unable to positively identify either of the top terrorists.
The intelligence gathered launched the largest military operation in Afghanistan in five years, Miklaszewski reported. Some intelligence and military officials "believed there was a high probability" bin Laden or Zawahiri were there, despite the lack of a positive ID.
US forces spent three days and nights pounding the al Qaeda hideout, killing 19 al Qaeda and Taliban officials, but missing bin Laden. Some officials told NBC that the mission was not swift enough to capture or kill America's No. 1 enemy in the war on terror.
"They were just too slow, too cumbersome, too risk averse," Mike Sheehan, an NBC terrorism analyst said. "And again we've missed him."
The following video is from NBC's Today Show, broadcast on September 27.

i knew it was not just me!!
Not again!
I defer my intro to Bill Maher (from last Friday’s Real Time on HBO):
"The Senate actually voted to condemn an ad. That’s what your government did yesterday---they had a vote to pass a resolution to condemn an ad with a pun in it. And then they had Oreos and braided each other’s hair.
And twenty two Democrats voted for that, by the way.
The Democrats are so useless they could not even pass a bill to get our troops more time between deployments. Only Republicans could make an argument that a bill that literally supports the troops didn’t support the troops, and only the Democrats could lose that argument.
Next week the Democrats are going to vote whether to give Republicans all their lunch money or just some of it."
News flash: With all the votes counted, the nerds gave away every penny to the jocks. First congresscritter to ask me for half of my peanut butter and Jelly sandwich today loses a finger.
