Tracking Political Prosecutions
Tracking Political Prosecutions
By Scott Horton
September 22, 2007
In the last two weeks, two sources, one of them inside of the Justice Department, have told me that a scheme was hatched in the upper echelons of the Bush Administration shortly after it took office in 2001 or early in 2002. The project identified John Edwards and Hillary Clinton as likely Democratic challengers to President Bush, and identified prominent trial lawyers around the United States as the likely financial vehicle for Edward’s rise. It directed that their campaign finance records be fly-specked, and that offenses not be treated as administrative matters but rather as serious criminal offenses.
The scheme contemplated among other things that raids be staged on the law offices involved, and that the records seized not be limited to campaign finance—there was an acute interest in all politically oriented documents, in order to seize valuable intelligence on strategic planning from the enemy camp.
This all sounds rather fantastic—even more insidious than the enemies list days of the Nixon era. It is precisely the sort of crude harassment that a primitive dictatorship would use against its enemies—like Alexander Lukashenko in today’s Belarus, for instance. But as the descriptions were passed to me, I instantly recognized the pattern described recently in a case which has made the headlines in Michigan involving a prominent lawyer there, and a second case in Los Angeles. According to one source, the number of these cases is at least five and they are scattered about the country. One case, described to me in some detail, closely matches the pattern in Michigan and Los Angeles and occurred in the south on the Gulf of Mexico.
Why, I wondered, would the attorneys involved not scream bloody murder about this? Then it struck me. The threat of criminal investigation and prosecution is devastating to their law practices. Of course, they would keep it completely secret. And that silence has made the entire scheme possible. I am told that these cases involved the attorneys general personally—both John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales—that their go-ahead was needed to stage the raids. And that in each case, the greatest concern within the political pirates commanding the operation has been that the public would get wind of the bigger picture. It was essential to pull it off that each case be viewed as something standing all on its own, and that the fact that there was a politically motivated project be obscured.
The key factor here is that all the cases involve campaign finance violations which are of a rather mundane nature. And in each case the FEC violations have been hyped into something quite preposterous. The political angle, I am told, is simple: make trial attorney’s money radioactive. Dry up the source. Take out a key element of the Democrats’ campaign finance strategy.
This looks very suspiciously like a Rove strategy.
And this bring us back to the key unanswered questions about Rove’s involvement in the process of directing political prosecutions. His fingerprints are all over the prosecution of Governor Siegelman in Alabama, and further substantial evidence of that will shortly be public, linking him both to federal and state prosecutors and to the principal figures in the Alabama G.O.P. in connection with the scheme to “get Siegelman.” It strikes me as probable that the plot to take out the trial lawyers and to use the Justice Department as the vehicle was also hatched by Rove.
All of this helps explain why the documents that the Judiciary Committee is seeking are so vital to get to the bottom of the cloud now hanging over the Justice Department. It is essential to find out what conspiracies were involved driving prosecutions, to correct what was done, discipline those involved, and exonerate the victims. This in fact is the essence of what justice demands. For five years Washington has had a Department of Political Persecutions where the Department of Justice used to stand. That needs to be cleaned up.

Paulose receives
Paulose receives exceptionally poor job review. The U.S. attorney in Minnesota, Rachel Paulose, is under federal investigation for using racist epithets against an employee, mishandling classified information, and retaliating against staffers. Today, the Washington Post reports that “an internal Justice Department audit completed last month said her employees gave her very low marks. … Her performance review was so poor that Kenneth E. Melson, head of the department’s Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, took the unusual step of meeting with her in Minnesota several weeks ago.”

U.S. officials ignored Iraqi
U.S. officials ignored Iraqi complaints on Blackwater. Senior Iraqi officials “repeatedly complained to U.S. officials about Blackwater USA’s alleged involvement in the deaths of numerous Iraqis, but the Americans took little action to regulate the private security firm until 11 Iraqis were shot dead last Sunday.” Iraqi officials note that the complaints go beyond security, to Iraqis’ dignity:
[Deputy Interior Minister Lt. Gen. Hussein] Kamal said addressing Blackwater’s alleged actions was also a matter of preserving Iraq’s dignity and honor. Seated in his spacious office, he recalled an incident two months ago when Blackwater guards threw a water bottle at a traffic policeman. The officer was so furious that he submitted his resignation, but his superiors turned it down, Kamal said.
“This is a flagrant violation of the law,” Kamal said. “This guy is an officer with a rank of a brigadier general. He was standing in the street doing his job, regulating traffic. He represents the state and the law, and yet this happened.”

On the Unopposed Zionist War Lobby
The Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations (PMAJO) – numbering 52 – and their regional and local affiliates are the leading force transmitting Israel’s war agenda against Iran. The PMAJO, working closely with US-Israeli Congressman Rahm Emmanuel and leading Zionist Senators Charles Schumer and Joseph Lieberman, succeeded in eliminating a clause in the budget appropriation setting a date for the withdrawal for US troops from Iraq.
In contrast to the successful vast propaganda, congressional and media campaigns, organized and funded by the pro-Israel lobbies for the war policies, there is no public record of the big oil companies supporting the Iraq war, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon or the military threats of preemptive attacks on Iran. Interviews with investment bankers, oil company executives and a thorough review of the major Petroleum Institute publications over the past seven years provide conclusive evidence that ‘Big Oil’ was deeply interested in negotiating oil agreements with Saddam Hussein and the Iranian Islamic government. ‘Big Oil’ perceives US Middle East wars as a threat to their long-standing profitable relations with all the conservative Arab oil states in the Gulf. Despite the strategic position in the US economy and their great wealth '‘Big Oil' was totally incapable of countering their political power and organized influence of the pro-Israel lobby. In fact Big Oil was totally marginalized by the White House National Security Advisor for the Middle East, Elliot Abrams, a fanatical Zionist and militarist.
Despite the massive and sustained pro-war activity of the leading Zionist organizations inside and outside of the government and despite the absence of any overt or covert pro-war campaign by ‘Big Oil’, the leaders of the US peace movement have refused to attack the pro-Israel war lobby and continue to mouth unfounded clichés about the role of ‘Big Oil’ in the Middle East conflicts.
The apparently ‘radical’ slogans against the oil industry by some leading intellectual critics of the war has served as a ‘cover’ to avoid the much more challenging task of taking on the powerful, Zionist lobby. There are several reasons for the failure of the leaders of the peace movement to confront the militant Zionist lobby. One is fear of the powerful propaganda and smear campaign which the pro-Israel lobby is expert at mounting, with its aggressive accusations of ‘anti-Semitism’ and its capacity to blacklist critics, leading to job loss, career destruction, public abuse and death threats.
The second reason that peace leaders fail to criticize the leading pro-war lobby is because of the influence of pro-Israel ‘progressives’ in the movement. These progressives condition their support of ‘peace in Iraq’ only if the movement does not criticize the pro-war Israel lobby in and outside the US government, the role of Israel as a belligerent partner to the US in Lebanon, Palestine and Kurdish Northern Iraq. A movement claiming to be in favor of peace, which refuses to attack the main proponents of war, is pursuing irrelevance: it deflects attention from the pro-Israel high officials in the government and the lobbyists in Congress who back the war and set the White House’s Middle East agenda. By focusing attention exclusively on President Bush, the peace leaders failed to confront the majority pro-Israel Democratic congress people who fund Bush’s war, back his escalation of troops and give unconditional support to Israel’s military option for Iran. \

Loyal Bushies one and all...with ties to organized crime

President Bush has chosen Mr. Mukasey to be the next attorney general, and Mr. Giuliani is running to succeed Mr. Bush.
If Mr. Mukasey is confirmed, he stands to lead the Justice Department at a time when prosecutors in the Southern District of New York are investigating a case with sensitive political implications for Mr. Giuliani. At issue is whether to seek an indictment of Mr. Giuliani’s former police commissioner and business partner, Bernard B. Kerik.
Though the authorities were initially reviewing only the possibility of tax evasion, and of offenses stemming from statements Mr. Kerik made to background investigators when Mr. Bush chose him to be secretary of homeland security, they have since cast a much wider net, examining a broader range of possible crimes, people briefed on the matter have said.
The ties between Mr. Mukasey and Mr. Giuliani continue to run deep. Before Mr. Mukasey’s selection to be attorney general, he and his family donated at least $10,000 to Mr. Giuliani’s presidential campaign. And he and his son Marc, who works for the law firm of Bracewell & Giuliani, were named this summer to the Giuliani campaign’s judicial advisory committee.

Naomi is half-right
It was also other slightly left of center mainstream economists, most notably Summers and Paul Krugman as well. To his credit, Krugman has now recanted; Sachs also, but only partially. It's true that you can make a case that this all goes back to Friedman. David Harvey's book, A History of Neoliberalism, actually traces the origins of neoliberalism to Friedman in Chile. It's an interesting perspective. But, as the left economist Robert Pollin remarks, to blame Friedman for the whole thing, and not how the entire economics mainstream went along--including the "liberals" like Sachs, Krugman, and Summers--is to let these people off the hook and to misrepresent history.
As Pollin, a brilliant and creative economist who spends much of his time advancing progressive counter-models--both for African nations and for advanced capitalist countries--emphasizes, "it's important to pummel the Sachs's of the world on this point, because they are changing, slowly. To get the world to change, their 1980s-1990s views need to be totally discredited. It's not enough to just say Milton Friedman was an ultra right winger and leave it at that."

Blackwater -- caught on
Blackwater -- caught on tape?
The debate over last weekend's Blackwater shootings, which killed as many as 20 people in Iraq, has been complicated by the competing version of events. Blackwater insists they were attacked by armed insurgents and returned fire in self-defense. Iraqi witnesses say the private security forces fired without provocation.
Of course, a videotape of what transpired might clear things up.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/09/22/iraq.blackwater.ap/index.html
Iraqi investigators have a videotape that shows Blackwater USA guards opened fire against civilians without provocation in an incident last week in which 11 people died, a senior Iraqi official said Saturday. He said the case had been referred to the Iraqi judiciary. [...]
Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said Iraqi authorities had completed an investigation into Thursday's shooting in Nisoor Square in western Baghdad and concluded that Blackwater guards were responsible for the deaths.
He told The Associated Press that the conclusion was based on witness statements as well as videotape shot by cameras at the nearby headquarters of the national police command. He said eight people were killed at the scene and three of the 15 wounded died in hospitals.
Will the video answer all of the questions and resolve the controversy? It's unlikely. As Kevin Drum noted, Iraqi officials believe the video is conclusive enough to file criminal charges against the Blackwater employees involved in the shooting. But it may not matter -- even Iraqi officials know Blackwater isn't going anywhere.
"If we expel this company immediately there will be a security vacuum that will demand pulling some troops off the battlefield," Tahseen Sheikhly, a civilian spokesman for the seven-month-old offensive against militants in Baghdad and surrounding areas. "This will create a security imbalance in securing Baghdad."
So we're left with a situation in which Iraqis feel compelled to grudgingly accept Blackwater's presence, despite instances in which the company may have killed unarmed civilians without provocation. The alternative, they say, would be less stability.
Got it.

Great way to spend my birthday - listening to Sammy!!! Can't wait until Tuesday 11AM.
Thats better.
Hey Sam. All. I see theyre playing Trading Places on Comedy Central. After watching it again I finally got down what order of trading and the signifagance of the Government report the Duke and Duke characters were trying to corner the market with. Arron Russo was on this in 1983, I guess.
Theyt expected the price to go astronomical cause the fake report Valentine and Winthrop delivered said the orange crop had been destroyed by the cold winter weather. Shortages. OJ would have cost triple or more. Theyre buyer was ordered to buy none stop, even if the price went up, on expectations the price would have not stopped going up. Estimated ending price being 200-500 per commodity share.
So Valentine(Murphy) and Winthrope(Ackroyd) I think bought, early share into F.C.O.J(frozen OJ commodities). But besides that, they were selling at the bigging once the price hit a market high. They became a new supply. People thinking shortage crises were getting all they could. Now after a minute of that Valentine and Winthrope own vouchers for sales to all the brokers of orange commodities at the market high. The supply supplemented by their selling, drives down the price while they sell at that market high. Then they have more sell vouchers then shares of commodity, and those sell vouchers(people waiting for OJ commodity shares from Valentine and Winthrope) are sold to those traders for that top dollar market high price created when the Dukes trader started selling. So they have to come up with shares for all those brokers.
Then the real report comes out during trading, the OJ crop isnt damaged by the winter cold. High supply. There'll be more than enough. I think that even means that years they'll divide into more shares. This makes shares in oranges go down. Now if you own the Tropicana company, youre going to make a profit since youre supply will reduce in price, and you can drop the [price of your product. Growers with too many oranges have to sell for less though. So while thats effecting the price, the promise of the supply so also drives down the price. Thats where Valentine get the shares, to fill the orders they sold for 142 a share. The market price after the report drops to 29, they buy and fill. The sell orders, vouchers, run through the computers, puts several dozen traders earlier purchace through which is where the money exhist. Like Valentine said in the beginning,"Sounds like theyre a couple of bookies".
The brokers vouchers translates into real money. Commodities bought at share market price of 142 are bought at 142. Even if you dont have those shares, and you buy them in the last half of trading, digitally it exhists and that money is calculated into the brokers buying power on the floor. So when at the end the head of the floor and Exchange commisions comes down to settle up, Duke and Duke I guess have or would have had, ummmm, errrr. I dont know, maybe, something like 3 millions shares of over-priced OJ bought for 142 a share they owe for. They couldnt dump it before last bell. And Valentine and Winthrope were buying shares at the lowest price possible easily, cause people were desperate to sell since after watching the Dukes trader, the whole floor poured in trying to get in on it. And thats why the guy says they owe 390 million dollars in cash. And on the butlers(Coleman) and Jaimee Lee's characters 42000$ original seed money,.... ddadadddaadda, ummmmm, you know, they might have earned a comprable 100 million or so. It might have been dollar for dollar for what the Dukes lost. And that was in 1983 money. But thats how Valentine and Winthrop cornered the market in that psuedo-fictional senario in the movie Trading Places. See commodities was based on speculation. Now, theyre making the price go up with war, on commodities like oil. Cornering the market...
The gun-running is reminiscent

bad the economy is actually doing, and how little wealth is actually in the hands of the American people under Bush. If the market has been so artificially inflated as it would suggest, if the last 3000-5000 numbers of the Dow belong solely to Boeing Lockheed Martin a few Pharasuiticle companies, Halliburton Bek Tell and Blackwater. Well, then one, were in a masked recession already. And two, oh man, its gonna be worse than expected, for another reason, then we already know about. Only reason China still gives us loans is so we can buy their exports, besides that why would they invest in Bush's America one would ask, when multi home owners stop buying, not just loans defaulting, but economic torpor and more... Clark and Iraq
I heard Clark explain a little on why Iran is interested in a peaceful Iraq. And they are giving aid and such things as cultural exchanges. Then he said to withdraw 2 combat brigades, and put together a high-caliber diplomatic team to work on a peaceful solution. All countries in the region to be involved. Nothing awful there.
Is it because he implies[?] the necessity to maintain a US Military presence there for decades? Such a presence will likely mean that Iraq will continue to fight. I need to hear that godamm segment again.

Its ok that you're not a yankee fan - you are a progressive/liberal forward thinking individual, and that is all that matters. We need more of us, that is for sure.
Iran probably booby traps its oil field with dirty bombs,
so if we invade, it'll be radioactive. Theyd contaminate thousands of square miles of oil rich land just to make it worthless to us or anyone else as a detourent to someone ever trying to invade them, in an attempt to steal it from them. We know the Suadis do it to their fields, and the Iranians most likely would have picked up the same idea. Maybe a reason Bush invaded Iraq, instead of the others. The government in Iran and Suadi I believ have more control over their fields then Saddam did. Saddam had to make more deals with Warlords to keep them from Sabotaging his own oil. They dont have that so much in Iran and Sudi. The War lords wouldnt allow Saddam to booby trap field he told them to guard. Thatd be stupid. So, left more unguarded and individually supervised, and after years of no fly santions(Saddam could booby trap oil wells we were inspecting) the Iraqs oil fields made for a much easier and inviting target for our creampuff President.

Its not just Saudis - its Islamic law
This is a huge thing. Before religion as we know it came to be in more familiar forms, during the formation of Christianity and then when Islam became an actual religion all of them had laws against collecting interest and many other issues with money.
That is WHY historically the hebrews, and jews were the money changers and bankers, merchants etc...thru out history - it was the lowest form of work and the only work allowed to be done by the peoples that became the jews.
That is where the stereotype comes from.
But yes muslims in general do consider collecting interest usery and thus the Saudis are not following their Wahabi faith fully. But they are more of a corporation who made an agreement with the mullahs to take over the country.
Saudi's aren't supposed to collect interest

One election at a time...
Why is the blog going to come to a halt in an hour, Sam?
Just wondering.
Iran Driving the Conflict
I believe that was the way Clark phrased it. I didn't take this to mean that "the enemy" in Iraq is Iran but I took this in context of the report read report about the phony sheik Abu Risha. The sunni tribes are coming together not to fight Al Qaeda but to fight the Shia. The report show interviews of some of the Sunnis that the U.S. forces now refer to as freedom fighters saying that their main enemy is the Shite's whom they equate with Iran. So my interpretation of what Clark said is more that the insurgency is as much anti-Iranian as it is anti-American.
I have been expecting for quite a while to wake up one morning and here the Bush administration tell us that we are at war with east asia not eurasia and we've always been at war with east asia. The manifestation of this Orwellian tactic will be that we switch sides in the civil war and fight along side the Sunnis to save the country from Iran.
What a mess!

In a September 23 New York Times Magazine article on a "sense of the Senate" amendment sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) that "condemn[ed] personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General [David] Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces," writer Matt Bai asserted that Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-IL) "voted for a lighter Democratic version of the resolution, but Mrs. Clinton voted against the final Republican measure and Mr. Obama skipped the vote as a protest. You might say they voted for it before they voted against it." In reality, the amendment supported by Democrats, introduced by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), was broader than the Republican version, which limited its specific criticism to a full-page advertisement the liberal group MoveOn.org placed in the Times on September 10 titled "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" Criticizing "attacks on the honor, integrity, and patriotism of any individual who is serving or has served honorably in the United States Armed Forces," the Boxer amendment specifically mentioned the MoveOn.org ad as well as GOP-led attacks in 2002 against then-Sen. Max Cleland (D-GA) and in 2004 against Sen. John Kerry (D-MA).

RE: Hillary versus Obama or Edwards
Sam asks exactly the right question: Which candidate is most likely to implement a progressive agenda?
That candidate, clearly, ain't Hillary.
Apart from polarizing the country and helping Republican downticket races in a national election, Hillary might not even win, which is really saying something given our current national mood/situation.
It is not enough, imo, to simply install triangulation's heir apparent into office so that we may endure 4 (or perhaps 8) years of zombie conservative dormancy, only to see a new strain emerge when conditions are more favorable.
While I prefer Gore overall, if the choice is betwixt Obama and Edwards, I'd take either.
Obama also has the intangible benefit of inspiring entire legions of people who never vote to do so, thereby repudiating the asinine robo-conservative saw that a candidate must "move to the right" to win the presidency.
Edwards, imo, is actually more openly progressive, but Obama has the potential, imo, to unite and and inspire and transform the country in a way [that] would not just momentarily squelch zombie conservatism but provide a demonstrable example of how and why it must be [actively] repudiated.
Not inna in-yer-face way (tho' we'd all enjoy that immensely), but inna lead-by-example comparative-results way.

I certainly do.
If Hillary got elected prez, she might surprise ever'one and become a really fine preznit. Some people rise above their station, others are hopelessly swamped by their incapacity (thinkin' a Jr., course).
Problem is, nothing in Hillary's political career/profile suggests she will discard her poll-tested, middle-of-the-road, easily-hazed-into-silent-acquiesence-by-Goopers, unprincipled, how-best-may-I-compromise-for-you? triangulatin' ways 'n adopt a open 'n aggressive progressive agenda.
You'd have to hope she s'prised ever'one cuz her track record ain't promisin'.
And while Hillary ain't a transparent dolt like what Jr. was in 2000, think it's proven a fatal flaw to discount past performance (it ain't no guarantee of future performance, course, but when a former drunk clueless waster who never accomplished anything in his life runs for preznit, it's prolly not a good ideer to fail to take past hist'ry into account; it poses real problems when such a shallow selfish piss-ant finds himself so completely outta his depth).

BUSH DECLARES: HILLARY WILL WIN NOMINATION; WHITE HOUSE CALLS OBAMA 'LAZY'
Sun Sep 23 2007 18:18:16 ET
President Bush, for the first time, is predicting that Barack Obama will be defeated in the Democratic presidential primaries by Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“She's got a national presence and this is becoming a national primary,” Bush tells author Bill Sammon in the bombshell book, EVANGELICAL PRESIDENT, set for release Monday. “And therefore the person with the national presence, who has got the ability to raise enough money to sustain an effort in a multiplicity of sites, has got a good chance to be nominated.”
Breaking his vow not to play “pundit-in-chief” in the 2008 presidential race, Bush tells Sammon that Clinton ultimately will be defeated in the general election by the Republican nominee.
“I think our candidate can beat her, but it's going to be a tough race,” the president predicted in an Oval Office interview. “I will work to see to it that a Republican wins, and therefore don't accept the premise that a Democrat will win. I truly think the Republicans will hold the White House.”

The Chris Matthews Show: Bloggers’ Influence on Politics
Welcome to the big time, bloggers. According to Chris Matthews–taking cues from Bush, natch–we’re in charge of the Democratic Party. Andrew Sullivan and John Heilemann ratchet down Tweety’s hyperbole.
SULLIVAN: I wish he (Bush) just had as much focus on winning the war in Iraq that he has on winning the war against the Democrats. I can’t believe that in a moment of this war–which is in a pivotal point–that he’s playing Rove’s partisan politics…
This clip is very much an interesting example of media trying to further narratives that their own talking points belie. Matthews asserts that Democratic bloggers are in charge, but goes to his panel who unanimously say that the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate would not be responsive to bloggers. He calls MoveOn’s anti-war efforts (and let’s be clear, they are anti-Iraq occupation, not reflexively anti-war in general) indicative of the far left and turns around and immediately agrees with Sullivan that 80% of the population are anti-war now…80% of the population being far left is one hell of a strange bell curve, Tweety.

Men are
1. Men are more likely to cheat. Multiple studies (such as this one and this one) have found that guys are more likely to commit adultery than women. Rates of cheating increase if the couple co-habitated before marriage and when the couples have high incomes.
2. Men are more likely to do personal web surfing at work. A Harris Interactive survey revealed that men spend more time on the Internet overall and visiting a wider variety of sites, including those that could be considered "malicious."
3. Men are more likely to die from melanoma, stroke, and other diseases. The journal Carcinogenesis cited a study in which a gene found only in men was found to be altered by chemical processes that lead to skin cancer. Further, a study published in American Journal of Public Health claimed that men are more likely to die from 14 of the 15 most deadly diseases in the U.S.
4. Men are more likely to die in traffic accidents. Research on U.S. road-risks by Carnegie Mellon University discovered that men are 77% more likely than women to die in traffic. The deadliest scenario for men on the road is a man between 21 and 24 years old, driving a motorcycle between midnight and 4 am. They are 45,000 times more likely to die in a traffic accident than the average person in typical driving conditions.
5. Men are more likely to be imprisoned. Further, a researcher at the University of Sydney reported that in all modern societies where data is available for study, men are predominantly the perpetrators of personal violence. In the U.S. in particular, men account for 90% of people charged in cases of aggravated assault, murder and manslaughter.
6. Men are more likely to be homeless. According to research by the University of California at San Diego, and published in ScienceDaily, men are more likely to be homeless than women.
7. Men are more likely to be murdered. The FBI's Uniform Crime Reports, analyzing 2005 data, showed that 79% of murder victims are men. Plus, men experienced higher rates of victimization for all violent crime except rapes/sexual assaults.
8. Men are more likely to commit suicide. Research published in ScienceDaily suggests that although suicide can be linked to high rates of depression, and women are more likely to be diagnosed as clinically depressed than men, women may be able to think through and express their problems more effectively than men, which could explain that men are four times more likely to kill themselves.
9. Men are more likely to use illegal drugs. The American Journal of Public Health reports that men are prone to experience the "Superman Syndrome" which makes them feel immune to health problems, making them less likely to shy away from dangerous activity like illegal drug use.
10. Men are more likely to have a drinking problem. A paper published by the group Counseling and Learning Skills Services points to the statistic that men are five times more likely to become an alcoholic than women.
When I met you in 1990, you
When I met you in 1990, you said that you'd marry the man who'd follow you around the world. We were just sophomores in high school, so I didn't know what to think. I thought it was just some school girl romantic fantasy. All I knew was that you were the girl for me. We were only 15 years old, but I had this feeling that you'd play a major role in my life. After we graduated from Aragon High School in San Mateo, you revealed to me that you were accepted to Berkeley, but you wanted to go to Germany for college. Remember that night we spent ice skating at Fashion Island? You said that you loved me, but you had to cut off all ties with to be able to move on. That was the last time I ever saw you. I said I'd wait for you, but you told me not to and to just move on...but I remember what you said sophomore year.
You were accepted at the University of Tübingen, Berlin. I left home for Berlin. For 4 years I looked for you. You made the impact you always did in Berlin. People heard of you, but didn't know where you were. Nobody helped me. I wasn't good enough for Tübingen, so I attended Technische Universität Berlin where I earned a degree. I am now fluent in German, a language I never intended to learn. After graduation, I returned to San Mateo thinking you returned as well. I called your mother on the summer after you graduated, she said you had left for grad school in Tokyo. I left again, this time, to Tokyo. Auf Wiedersehen.
Your father said you are studying business at Keio University in Tokyo. I looked all over Tokyo for you. From the morning rush at Shinjuku Station, to the last train on the Tozai-line bound for Nakano. You were never found. To make ends meet, I got a job at NOVA, then in 1998 I got a real job at DoCoMo. I fell in love with Japan and its culture. I learned the language, and I am now fluent. Another language I never intended to learn. I went to the graduate office at Keio University's school of business seeing if you were set to graduate. There you were, on the list. I was denied entry to the ceremony since I had no tie to anyone graduating. That was the closest I had ever come to seeing you since grad night back in high school. Two months after graduation, I resigned from DoCoMo. I recieved an email from your cousin (You know, Jerry's ex-girlfriend) saying you had gotten a job in Hong Kong. I left my friends, my job, my home, my fiance, and everything Tokyo gave me to search for you. I'm so sorry Mizuki. Kima wa itsumo kokoro no naka ni iru.
It was 1999, and I had just arrived in Hong Kong, and so did you. Six months later, I found out you had left Hong Kong because you didn't enjoy your new job. From Causeway Bay to Kowloon, there were traces of you, but never the real entity. Your father told me you went to India for training for a tech company, then were to be set up in London. I don't know if I searched for you for no reason, but then again, my searches have always been fruitless. I went to Seoul to take up a lucrative job offer at one of LG's sister companies, Hiplaza, Inc.
In late 1999, I had already been established in Korea. I worked for Hiplaza, then 3 years later, LG. For the first time, I was free of the feeling of having to look for you. I was in a place I knew you weren't It was like a dream. A world without you. The dream ended 3 months ago when I left LG. Now the curse of your existence has returned. An nyonghi jumuship siyo.
I'm now back in San Mateo. I haven't been here in the bay area since 1996. All my high school friends are either married, dead, or gone without a trace. I have nobody here but my dysfuctional family. Your brother said last month that you're still in London and will return to the bay area permanently this summer. I chased you around the world for 12 years, learned 3 languages, made quite an amount of money, just to meet you in the town where it all began. Fashion ISland isn't even there anymore, but the ice skating rink is still there.
I'm not German, I'm not Japanese, and I am not Korean, but I can say anything in those languages, but I can't say anything to bring you back. You made the biggest changes in my life without barely stepping foot into it. I don't know if I should thank you or hate you, but one thing I'm sure of, I miss you dearly. Your cousin told me what your brother couldn't bring himself to tell me. 3 hours ago I recieved an email saying the reason why you're coming back is because you want to have your wedding in San Francisco, and that it was your fiance's idea.
Fuck you.

I can tell you this much about the video. It is two dance instructors teaching how to...to...boogie or whatever it was called circa 1974 or so.
I've seen the long version in past years. There is a drum machine or something similar in the background. The teachers begin by standing still, then they narrate the application of "boogie" move #1, then add boogie move #2, etc.

MMRules,
I saw it on television in what I think was a compilation of old TV shows and clips. The dance instructors had a television show somewhere on the dial in the Seventies. They taught Waltz's and the Tango and several other dances in the clips that I vaguely remember (Monkey, Swim, Hitchhiker, etc).
They were pretty good at explaining the process. The Disco or Rock-and-Roll moves that you have featured were funny because the instructors were trying to depict structure in a dance style that isn't necessarily structured.
I bumped into my dentist today. It was Coincidental
I'm trying to commit random acts of synchronicity.
Not trying too hard, though.

It pleases me to note that this pounce-able point of your'n would have the advantage of actually making sense (as opposed to simply being churlish) if you could actually cite how MoveOn is guilty of your pounce-able point about taking past behavior into account.

A Tree For The Horned God
The day that is no day calls for a tree
That is no tree, of low yet lofty growth.
When the pale Queen of Autumn casts her leaves
My leaves are freshly tufted on her boughs.
When the wild apple drops her goodly fruit
My all-heal fruit hangs ripening on her boughs.
Look, the twin temple-posts of green and gold,
The overshadowing lintel stone of white.
For here with white and green and gold I shine -
Graft me upon the King when his sap rises
That I may bloom with him at the year's prime,
That I may blind him in his hour of joy.

dr,
Tut, tut. You are cheating. My subject was politicians and political organizations of any bent. (Remember the reference to white hats versus black hats?)
Ironically, your subject was Hillary, who most certainly qualifies as a politician of a bent who is a member of a political organization of a bent.
Damning evidence #1--dr: "Problem is, nothing in Hillary's political career/profile suggests she will discard her..."
Damning evidence #2--dr: "And while Hillary ain't a transparent dolt like what Jr. was in 2000, think it's proven a fatal flaw to discount past performance..."

I dunno, my pretty. Methinks the Bait doth cheat too much on this'n.
I concede straightway that I am makin' an argument re: Hillary 'bout takin' past performance into account. Ain't in dispute. Ain't no disagreement there.
Where I thinks yer in the shoal water on this'n is:
If you *can't* cite how MoveOn is guilty of egregious lapses in the past, it seems (ahem) "churlish" to assume they will be, specially before they even do so.
You ain't got no past to cite w/MoveOn and yet yer ready to indict?
(If the MoveOn glove don't fit, you must acquit.)
Catharine's sarcastic point about "well, maybe we should just give up, then?" (paraphrase) strikes at the heart a that.
You is/was indictin' MoveOn *before* you had anything to cite them with.
The operative point in this case: If there ain't a past egregious hist'ry you can cite, the entire point about a politician's/political movement's past hist'ry collapses.
Or, ironically, you make my point for me: Are we to assume that, b/c MoveOn doesn't have past egregious offenses, that they undoubtedly never will. This follows from your argument 'less you wanna cite some things MoveOn is guilty of which gives you pause.
Which is how'z'come your line don't hold: You is mixin', imo, MoveOn unsullied apples w/Hillary plenty rottin' oranges.

and impatient...
So I guess that I'll have to entertain myself...
Back to the debate as to why the Dems don't push harder...
Beyond the money which has ever more been dangled out in right field, there's always the matter of those that did go for and get the money in the past being more ideologically compatible with the right. Yes Virginia, some Democrats are neocons too...and they've been there long enough to positions themselves as power players within Democratic party.
At one time my best guess was that there were 22 of them that were decidedly right wing so it's no surprise to me when 25 of them jump ship. Now rather than dismiss an entire party because of these few bad apples how do we dismiss them without diluting what power we do have and making it even easier for the right wingnuts from derailing any progress?
Well this brings me to one of my pet peeves with the democrats...Why the hell do their political advisors and campaign strategists always seem to agree with or advise towards a strategy that benefits the republicans?...many of them later appearing on faux news as talking heads?
My guess here is that much like the media ownership in this country by the right that the public relations firms are also owned or that because of their paychecks they simply side with the supply siders who will benefit their high incomes.
Back to what to do about it...
In the short term and both in the case of high power neocons in Dem clothing and the PR firms, we need to identify and isolate them from the party as a whole, provide counter pressure to their campaigns. In this environment simply calling them for what they are will suffice.
In the long term...Those neocons in Dems clothing need to be pushed out the same way Lieberman was...We simply can not afford that type of infiltration. Those PR co's will swear fealty to whichever way the wind blows but will turn the very moment it's in their economic interest...They are corporations after all. So we have to get our own people in those positions, own those types of things ourselves. We need young money.
Ok, enough rambling for the moment...Can't read what anyone else is writing while I type...That bugs me...
