How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings
An excerpt:
I'M A STAR, YOU'RE A STAR
You're a star--and so am I. I'm a genius--and so are you. Your brilliance
doesn't diminish my charisma, and vice versa.
Those are the new rules in the New World we're creating. That's different
from the Old World, where your greatness is supposed to make me feel
envious, and all of us are allegedly in competition for the rare privilege of
being a well-appreciated winner.
In the New World, you don't have to play down or apologize for your
prowess, because you love it when other people shine. You exult in your
own mastery without regarding it as a sign of inherent superiority. As you
ripen more of your latent aptitude, you inspire others to claim more of
their own idiosyncratic magnificence.

The Bible quotes the radical first-century spiritual activist Jesus Christ as
follows: "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those
who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you."
This approach is as important to my well-being as getting good food and
exercise and sleep. It's self-destructive for me to hate anything, including
things that are easy to hate and that I might be naturally inclined to hate.
As much harm as fundamentalist Christians have wreaked on our culture,
for instance, feeling disgust for them only makes me sick. It feeds the
very "us versus them" thinking that I'm pledged to root out, thereby
making me a hypocrite and tainting my integrity. My mental and physical
health suffer, and that diminishes my ability to get what I want.

I believed he knew something would happen some day and wanted to be in front of the camera's quickly. I know. Its a goofy theory.
Sour grapes
In other words, his audience is shut-ins who are too old, fat, lazy, stoned or bored to get up to turn the radio dial.//
Sour grapes is the false denial of desire for something sought but not acquired; to denigrate and feign disdain for that which one could not attain. This metaphor originated from the fable The Fox and the Grapes by Aesop, where the protagonist fox fails to reach some grapes hanging high up on a vine, retreats, and rationalizes that the grapes are probably sour anyway.

I always thought that the proper term for "neocons" should be

Jones Report Reveals
Jones Report Reveals ‘Progress’ In Shia Ethnic Cleansing Campaign
Bush’s “surge” has escalated ethnic cleansing. Shiites have cleared the western half of Baghdad of thousands of Sunnis, who once dominated the area. Newsweek reports:
The surge of U.S. troops — meant in part to halt the sectarian cleansing of the Iraqi capital — has hardly stemmed the problem. The number of Iraqi civilians killed in July was slightly higher than in February, when the surge began. … Rafiq Tschannen, chief of the Iraq mission for the International Organization for Migration, says that the fighting that accompanied the influx of U.S. troops actually “has increased the [internally displaced persons] to some extent.”
The Iraqi Red Crescent Organization and the U.N. reported last month that the “number of Iraqis fleeing their homes has soared since the American troop increase began in February.” Despite the mass exodus of large numbers of Iraqis from conflict zones, the Iraqi health ministry reports there still have been more civilian deaths this month than in previous months.
The National Intelligence Estimate confirmed that where some “conflict levels have diminished,” it was due to ethnic cleansing. The new report by an independent 20-member military commission headed by Gen. James Jones puts this reality in a stark visual presentation. See the chart below (from p. 34 of the Jones report):
The chart reports some decreases in the intensity of “ethno-sectarian violence” in certain Baghdad districts (Note: This is based on military data). But where there have been decreases, they are due largely to the fact that “mixed Muslim” areas are being overrun by either Shia or Sunni enclaves.
The map above demonstrates that Shias have been gradually taking over all of Baghdad (noted by the green mass that now covers much of the city), wiping out Sunni communities that stood in their path. Center for American Progress analyst Brian Katulis estimated that Baghdad, which once used to be a 65 percent Sunni majority city, is now 75 percent Shia.
Next week, when Gen. Petraeus reports “progress” in reducing sectarian violence in Iraq, what he means is that there has been great “progress” in the Shia ethnic cleansing campaign.

Gen. Jones: ‘Yes,’ we
Gen. Jones: ‘Yes,’ we can begin to withdraw from Iraq. In a House Armed Services Committee hearing this afternoon, Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) asked Gen. James Jones to comment on his report’s recommendation that the U.S. should reduce its footprint in Iraq. The Jones report suggests “significant reductions” in the “size of our national footprint in Iraq.” Skelton asked Jones if this is a call to reduce troop levels, and Jones answered yes:
JONES: [W]e can consider taking a look at our footprint, taking a look at how many people we have in Iraq, how many bases we have, how many locations we have, and begin to think about ways in which we can realign the force, retask the force, and even remission it, so that we can gradually adjust our footprint and our military commanders can do it.
SKELTON: Does that mean reduce?
JONES: Sir?
SKELTON: Does that mean reduce our force?
JONES: It means — it means finding efficiencies and it means — yes, it means making a candid assessment of who’s over there, who absolutely needs to be there, critically, and making sure that we are operating at peak efficiency and don’t have excessive capacity simply over there because it’s their time to go.

Yeah. I know the fable well. So, what's your point?
Is it that I yearn to be a famous fake? That I want to be a twice-divorced Hillbilly Heroin addict who smuggles Viagra on trips to the Dominican Republic? That I want to get rich by lying to the lowest common denominator?
I got news for you. I don't yearn to be a wealthy arms dealer, either. Or a rich pimp.
The fox-and-grapes lesson only applies to cases in which the grapes are not actually sour and undesirable.
And I think that you have me confused with people who are on a crusade to put progressive voices on radio and television? I believe that most of the stupid people listen to a lot of radio and watch a lot of television while most of the smart people do not. ZOGBY POLL: 51% Want Congressional Probe into 9/11 Actions by Bush and Cheney
32% Favor 'Immediate Impeachment'...
Must hit the road for a bunch of hours today (Utah here we come! For a few hours, anyway.) so I'll leave you with the following press release from Zogby sent out this morning, with some interesting numbers concerning both 9/11 and Impeachment...
Zogby Poll: 51% of Americans Want Congress to Probe Bush/Cheney Regarding 9/11 Attacks; Over 30% Seek Immediate Impeachment
67% also fault 9/11 Commission for not investigating anomalous collapse of World Trade Center 7
Kansas City, MO (Zogby International) September 6, 2007 - As America nears the sixth anniversary of the world-churning events of September 11, 2001, a new Zogby International poll finds a majority of Americans still await a Congressional investigation of President Bush' and Vice President Cheney's actions before, during and after the 9/11 attacks. Over 30% also believe Bush and/or Cheney should be immediately impeached by the House of Representatives.
The 911truth.org–sponsored poll also found that over two-thirds of Americans say the 9/11 Commission should have investigated the still unexplained collapse of the 47-story World Trade Center Building 7 at 5:20 p.m. on September 11, 2001.
WTC 7 housed the mayor's emergency bunker and offices of the SEC, IRS, CIA and Secret Service and was not hit by any planes but still completely collapsed into its own footprint nearly eight hours after the Twin Tower attacks. FEMA did not explain this collapse, the 911 Commission ignored it, and the promised official study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now 2 years overdue.
Janice Matthews, executive director of poll sponsor 911truth.org, observes: "The supermajority response to the WTC Building 7 question signals an increasing public concern about this remarkable event --- up from 38% last year. We can perhaps credit this rising awareness to the millions who have recently witnessed videos or Youtube clips of this skyscraper's descent and the outspoken demands for a new WTC inquiry from over 150 architects and engineering professionals, including NIST's own former Fire Science Division Chief, Dr. James Quintiere. Another contributory factor is the increased questioning among Hispanics, Blacks and Asians whose responses appear significantly more critical of the 9/11 Commission than Whites, sometimes twice as critical."
Strategy aide W. David Kubiak adds, "While only 32% seek immediate Bush and/or Cheney impeachment based on their current personal knowledge, a clear majority of citizens still seems hungry for a full exposure of the facts. The results suggest widespread public support for legislators like Rep. Dennis Kucinich who pledge to investigate unanswered 9/11 questions in the relevant congressional committees this fall. We hope more of our representatives find the spine to respond to this escalating dissatisfaction with the dubious accounting we have received thus far."
9/11 family member and 911truth.org advisor Donna Marsh O'Connor notes, "I’m not sure this poll is at all surprising. Over half of those polled want more answers from Congress, from those they hired to represent them. One quarter of the country knows enough to want to impeach both. Doesn't it just mean people need figures they consider credible to tell them whether key details add up or not? Truth advocates need to press their case in Congress, on college campuses, in church groups with reason and absolute discipline regarding what can and cannot be proven. The strongest evidence needs to reach the people—including people who hate computers. We must present it calmly. Like whispering so that people reach in to hear."

An original investigative report by Black Box Voting
MOONSHINE ELECTION SERIES - Part 1
Black Box Voting has found "Moonshine Election patterns" in 16 states, which together carry 210 electoral votes.
America is afflicted with many different, often overlapping election problems. In a series of new original investigative reports, Black Box Voting identifies several problem election syndromes and recommends citizen-initiated actions to take.
It was the plucky resolve of a few extraordinary citizens in places like the coal mining hills of Whitley County and the aptly named Bullitt County that convinced us Kentucky deserved a visit. What we found affects many states, has affected presidential elections, and certainly has changed many a law-abiding citizen's life.
MOONSHINE ELECTIONS - FOUR OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS:
1. Rural location
2. Family members hold multiple positions in the local government
3. Problems are noted in financial audits
4. Felony convictions of local officials
5. Questionable election situations
6. Obstructs or ignores Freedom of Information (public records) requests
7. Uses computerized voting systems serviced by small subcontractors
Black Box Voting has identified several of these kinds of election jurisdictions in Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and parts of southern Illinois, Ohio and Indiana, as well as some of western Pennsylvania, eastern Missouri, and scattered locations in Texas.

We have a complete catastrophe as a Republican [sic] today. I will give you the vision of the future next year: about 8 to 11 senators will be voted as Democrats that are now Republicans. There will be about 30 Republican congressmen that are now Republicans that will also become Democrats. And the next president will be a Democrat. My entire Republican party is being destroyed because of this catastrophe that’s happened in Iraq and all these wonderful young soldiers - 27,000 wounded and disabled soldiers, 12 - 15 million [thousand?] with severe mental problems, almost 4,000 dead. That’s 50,000 young men that…lives have been either partially destroyed or are dead today and we have accomplished absolutely nothing. It is very sad and very pathetic and you can put lipstick on this pig any way you want to, but in the final analysis, we have accomplished absolutely nothing and it is very sad to see my party destroyed over this issue.
And Rep. Gingrey’s weenie response?
You say you’re a Republican, but what primary did you vote in last time in Ohio? That would be kind of interesting to know.

Bin Laden Plans Video on 9/11
Sep 6, 7:16 PM (ET)
By LEE KEATH
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Osama bin Laden will release a new video in the coming days ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in what would be the first new images of the terror mastermind in nearly three years, al-Qaida's media arm announced Thursday.
Analysts noted that al-Qaida tends to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary with a slew of messages, and the Department of Homeland Security said it had no credible information warning of an imminent threat to the United States.
Still, bin Laden's appearance would be significant. The al-Qaida leader has not appeared in new video footage since October 2004, and he has not put out a new audiotape in more than a year, his longest period without a message.

RAF intercepts eight Russian bombers
as Putin provokes West
The RAF scrambled to intercept eight Russian nuclear bombers heading for Britain yesterday in the biggest aerial confrontation between the two countries since the end of the Cold War.
...
The flights are the latest example of Mr Putin’s ability to irritate the West with bold strokes that cost the Kremlin little and delight many ordinary Russians, who enjoy seeing Nato discomfited. He has already pulled Russia out of the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty on arms limitation, and railed against US proposals to install a missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.
With presidential elections only six months away, such assertive nationalism convinces many Russians that he has restored the country’s international prestige. Some critics have suggested that a siege mentality is being fostered to create support for a presidential successor from the siloviki, the Kremlin’s hardline military and security service faction.

Olive Tree Love
...
The agonizing pain of loss felt by Palestinians for their ravaged land is not expressed in the statistics. Only those who have suffered the same cruel violations or those who seek to protect and preserve the delicate balance of the world's environment can understand what it means for people off the land. International law, although on their side, remains ineffective as no world government, not even the United Nations, is prepared to pressure Israel to stop its illegal collective punishment of the entire Palestinian population. Today, there are campaigns all around the world to end the uprooting of trees in Palestine and to replant those which have already been uprooted. And each year, when the Palestinian olive harvest approaches, international volunteers join Palestinians to provide some human protection from the acts of violence visited on Palestinian farmers by Israeli settlers and soldiers who want to stop the harvesting of crops. These wonderful acts of solidarity help to heal the land, but they cannot heal the pain of those who have to watch the uprooting of age-old olive trees, the desecration of their land and their millennia-old heritage. Such heartbreaking reality has led the Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish, to say, "If the olive trees knew the hands that planted them, their oil would have become tears ..."

Amputations, torture, brutal cruelty:
the bloody reality behind the statistics
...They worked frantically to keep him alive.
All his remaining limbs were amputated except for the top of one arm...
He is 19.
...
For Western publics this is a sanitised war.
...
Two hours after the 19-year-old soldier arrived, another helicopter delivered a blindfolded, heavily sedated Iraqi detainee from Camp Bucca in southern Iraq. The medics removed the blindfold to find his eyeballs bulging out.
At first they thought his eyelids had been cut off by his fellow prisoners. Then they realised that both eyeballs had been gouged from their sockets and were hanging loose.
His fellow prisoners had also cut off his tongue.
They had beaten him so severely that all four limbs required faschioto-mies – the slitting of the skin – to release the pressure caused by internal swelling. “It was a stunning degree of cruelty,” said Major Won Kim, the ophthalmologist who removed the eyeballs.
...
Is the war worth this price? “If Iraq turns around, if you give these people an opportunity to succeed and become a country that’s not oppressed any more then maybe it is worth it,” says Major White.
“You have to be optimistic. There’s no way you can watch all these people die and do all these amputations and not believe it’s going to work.”
Captain Meadows recalled a fellow medic rushing to help two wounded soldiers in the field and stepping on an IED. He was killed: “I loved that guy. I want this to be worth it. I can’t see us slinking away and saying it was all for nothing. You want it all to be for something.”

Ten things that finally killed Net neutrality
Posted by Declan McCullagh
If you haven't heard much about Net neutrality this year, you're not alone. It went from being the political equivalent of a first-run Broadway show, with accompanying street protests and high profile votes in Congress, to a third-rate performance with no budget and slumping attendance.
So what killed Net neutrality? Here's a list, in no particular order:
1. The Bush administration.
2. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
3. The AT&T merger.
4. A fragmenting coalition.
5. Mixed messages.
6. The Bush administration. Yes, it's on the list twice.
7. The Federal Trade Commission.
8. No smoking gun.
9. 700 MHz wireless spectrum.
10. Partisan gridlock.
Most technology debates in Congress aren't especially partisan: Both Democrats and Republicans fall over each other to enact unconstitutional restrictions on free speech when it comes to laws like the Communications Decency Act. The R&D tax credit is another. But somehow along the way, perhaps because Internet companies allied themselves so closely with MoveOn.org (hardly a non-partisan group), it became a partisan issue. And that led to the usual partisan gridlock.
You warmed my heart all up, NC...
That is so sweet...
It's almost like a poem what you wrote...
Have you searched around outside your area for
cooperation? There must be something...I'll help you look if you want.
I got the 06 report from our County Animal Control and they received about 1,300 cats and killed like 1,000+...I think I said that already..it's devasating...Just never call them or the Humane Society...that's my advice...
Plus you could always start something too if you want...become a non profit, work a deal with the vets for a cheaper rate for s/n, then use the donations to give the vet vouchers they redeem from your bank account...If this small town can have so many members, I think yours would be bigger...
Or
you could tell the neighbors it's a one time thing to clear up the colony...but then if and when you catch them all and release them all (you can't even leave one undone), someone would then need to feed the colony...and the other issue being buying enough traps...County's usually lend them out, and at least here there is a backlog for borrowing them...

Police break up anti-war meeting in Washington
"The police suppressed the press conference. In the middle of the speeches, they grabbed the podium" erected in a park in front of the White House for the small gathering, Brian Becker, national organizer of the ANSWER anti-war coalition, told AFP.
"Then, mounted police charged the media present to disperse them," Becker said.
The charge caused a peaceful crowd of some 20 journalists and four or five protestors to scatter in terror....

RENÉ GUÉNON
ABD AL-WAHID YAHYA
Guenon’s view of science is an integral part of his endeavor of reviving the traditional worldview and cannot be properly understood in isolation from the general purview that he adopts throughout his works. The gist of Guenon’s metaphysical views also lies at the heart of the Traditionalist School: the primordial and perennial Truth, which manifests itself in a variety of religious traditions and metaphysical systems, has been lost in the modern world. The modernists seek to reduce all higher principles and levels of reality to their manifestation in the world of multiplicity and relative existence. Modern philosophy carries this out by reducing everything to the individualistic horizon of the subject and by relegating objective reality to the discursive constructions of the knowing subject. In the field of natural sciences, positivism and its scientistic allies similarly reject any reality that is beyond the reach and scrutiny of the quantitative measurement of physical sciences. In the social realm, the moral and aesthetic principles are left to the arbitrary decisions and consensuses of the majority, thus jeopardizing the objective reality of the truth. For Guenon, the malaise of the modern world is its relentless denial of the metaphysical realm, the metaphysical world being comprised of both philosophy and spirituality. Guenon sees everything in the world of creation as an application and manifestation of metaphysical principles that are contained in the perennial teachings of religions, and applies them to every single subject that he addresses in his works. Both the value of traditional sciences of nature and the misguided claims of modern secular science are judged in proportion to their proximity or distance from these principles. In this sense, Guenon is a metaphysician par excellence who has devoted his life to the diagnosis and correction of the metaphysical mistakes of the modern world.

Rudy at Middlebury,VT
I listened to Rudy G. give the commencement speech at Middlebury College in Vermont two years ago. The speech went something like this...Middlebury has prepared you for life, I know a thing or two about preparedness, it is very important to be prepared in school and in life. This was well before his announcement to run for president, but I thought then and believe now this was a feeler speech for his eventual election bid.
Listening to Rudy give that speech it took every ounce of self control I had not to yell out "What about WTC7." I can distinctively remember reading in the New York Times years before 9/11 that the decision to place the OEM at the WTC was being questioned by numerous authorites. It was clear from the article that the final decision was that of Mr. Giuliani, against a host of detractors.
Bye the Bye, I would like to know exactly what was built at the ranch in Crawford, Texas, formerly known as "THE WESTERN WHITE HOUSE" at taxpayer expense. Yes, they had a plaque made that said just that. I know because I saw it. And will American citizens be allowed a tour of the PEOPLES HOUSE in Texas?
Sam, thanks again for your hard work. Don't ever forget WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS.
Best regards to you and yours.
I rear ended a car this morning...
I knew it was going to be a REALLY bad day.
The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF!
He looked up at me and said, "I am NOT happy".
I said, "Well, which one ARE you then?"
That's when the fight started!!!
He never heard the shot....

Born a Baptist
Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak. But, all of Bubba's neighbors were Catholic....And since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Friday.
The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.
The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic.
After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass.....and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic."
Bubba's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood.
The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.
There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted: "You wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you is a catfish."
MURPHY goes into the confessional
MURPHY goes into the confessional and says to his priest "I had an affair with a woman. . . almost."
The priest says, "What do you mean, almost?"
MURPHY says, "Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped".
The priest says, "Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You're not to see that woman again. For your penance, say 5 Hail Mary's and put $50 in the poor box."
MURPHY leaves the confessional, says his prayers, then walks over to the poor box. He pauses for a moment and then starts to leave.
The priest, who was watching, quickly runs over to him saying, "MURPHY!!! I saw that you didn't put any money in the poor box!"
MURPHY replies, "Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that's the same as putting it in.

Greenspan points to market 'fear'
BBC
Current financial turmoil is identical to that seen in earlier stock market crashes, Alan Greenspan has warned.
The ex-Federal Reserve boss compared today's situation to the crash of 1987 and the fallout from the near-demise of Long-Term Capital Management in 1998.
Anxiety over a global credit squeeze triggered by the US housing slump was driven by "fear", he said in a speech.
"The human race has never found a way to confront bubbles," he said, alluding to booms suddenly grinding to a halt.
'Identical behaviour'
According to the Wall Street Journal, Mr Greenspan drew parallels in a speech in Washington with US financial panics down the years, driven either by a collapse in confidence in banks or land speculation turning sour.
The current turbulence is being driven by banks' unwillingness to lend until the full extent of their exposure to the troubled sub-prime mortgage market becomes clear, a situation which threatens to hurt the US economy and spread to other countries.
The Federal Reserve has said sub-prime losses could total $100bn and is under pressure to cut interest rates later this month to make borrowing cheaper for banks and consumers.
"The behaviour in what we are observing in the last seven weeks is identical in many respects to what we saw in 1998 and what we saw in the stock market crash of 1987," Mr Greenspan said.
The remarks were made at a meeting in Washington organised by the academic journal Brookings Papers on Economic Activity.
Historical parallels
1987 saw the largest one-day peacetime fall in the US stock market, when more than 20% was wiped off the value of the Dow Jones index of leading companies.
The collapse was triggered by the widespread fear that the US economy was set to slow after a period of feverish expansion, in which borrowed money, some of it high-risk, was used to fund huge takeovers.
The financial problems of Long-Term Capital Management, which caused consternation in the global derivatives market, were triggered by the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which spread to Russia and Brazil a year later.
Stock markets in the US recovered relatively quickly after both upheavals.
Mr Greenspan, who now advises a number of hedge funds and other financial institutions, said the nervousness which typically gripped markets when a period of "euphoric" expansion ended was extremely powerful.
"The expansion phase of the economy is quite different and fear as a driver, which is going on today, is far more potent than euphoria," he said.
Greenspan points to market 'fear'
nice animated gif.
the past few weeks we have seen "good" news like the fed will step in, and recent data saying things aren't as bad as we thought. the market has rallied but when you look at the technical indicators the volume has been low and basically institutions have been quietly selling their stock to gasp, the individual investor who believes the spin.
now we enter september, and greenspan speaks (he should really stfu and just go away, considering what a bad job he did for so many years) and the real economic data from the events in august starts to surface. guess which way the markets gonna head, and guess who's been left holding the bag.
just add this to one more reason why you hate wall street.
the ripple effect - fright breeds fright, be very scared
reuters leads off in their morning email with:
Welcome to the Reuters Before the Bell news mail.
Alan Greenspan is at it again. The Wall Street Journal says the former Fed chairman is likening current conditions to those of 1987, when the market crashed, and to 1998, when stocks plunged after the collapse of the Long-Term Capital Management hedge fund.
This evocation of a scary past, combined with the release of anxiously awaited employment data, has stock futures pointing down.
Harley-Davidson isn't helping. The motorcycle maker says earnings have hit a speed bump because of the tough times consumers are facing.
The payroll figures are due before the bell. Soon after, the Commerce Department will release wholesale inventory figures.
U.S. Treasuries are up, and the dollar is down against the yen and several other currencies.
Oil, on the other hand, is riding high on tensions in the Middle East and further declines in U.S. inventories. U.S. crude is now above $76.50.
Kos and AAR Vs the DLC !
Kos Needs Hillary More Than Hillary Needs Kos
If Kos suffers from this delusion, he will get a very rude awakening come next year. Hillary Clinton, the presumptive nominee, does not need Kos' money, his approval, nor his organization. In fact, once the primaries are over, Kos and the Gang become one huge fricking liability as Hillary oh-so-predictably tacks back toward the center and tries to convince the nation that she is, in fact, Republican-lite.
She may start looking for that Sister Souljah moment to put a wedge between herself and Kos just as soon as it is politically expedient to do so. Kos, who doesn't appear to have a clue about how he appears to the world, just might inadvertently oblige her. If not, Kos will be happy to take all the credit for her victory, just as he thinks he alone defeated the Republicans last November. It takes that little to satisfy Kos. He doesn't know what real power is or how to wield it, and so he is content with everyone calling him Kingmaker. He thinks that actually makes him a Kingmaker.
Kos isn't about power, really, he is about the illusion of power, and Kos has at least enough sense to know that if he makes enemies with Hillary and she wins the nomination . . . he is cast into utter irrelevance from which his fledgling organization would most likely not recover. Thus the abrupt about-face on Hillary, the DLC and his new bestest buddy Harold Ford.
I expect Kos
to be independent enough to continue the vigilance against shitty government regardless of the nominee dumb anon. It benefits Kos not to get too cozy. Wow are you delusional about where Kos fits.
An Iraq Movie You Can’t
An Iraq Movie You Can’t Shake Off
In his first film since the Oscar-winning 'Crash,' Paul Haggis takes on the Iraq war—with a little help from Tommy Lee Jones
Sept. 6, 2007 - Tommy Lee Jones may have the most eloquently ravaged face in current American movies. He looks like a man who's tread too many miles of bad road, and his journey in Paul Haggis's "In the Valley of Elah" is a tough, mournful one. As Hank Deerfield, a former military MP, he learns that his son, who has returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, has gone missing and is reported AWOL. Leaving behind his distraught wife (Susan Sarandon), he drives from Tennessee to Fort Rudd, in Texas, to investigate. It isn't long before he's confronted with the worst: his son's body, chopped into pieces, has been found in a field.
Haggis's first film since his Oscar-winning "Crash" is a much more straightforward affair than that facile exercise in dubious sociology. It unfolds as a murder mystery: one fraught with an angry, sorrowful political subtext and a tone that's unvaryingly solemn. Deerfield is joined in his investigation by an inexperienced police investigator, Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron), whose own efforts are to solve the case are thwarted by her sexist colleagues, who are happy to cede jurisdiction over the murder to the military. Deerfield, a tough, tenacious man, doesn't trust anyone but himself to get the investigation right.
The considerable power of the film is contained in Jones's hard-bitten, movingly understated performance. His rage and sorrow rarely break the surface, but you feel its constant presence lurking behind his devastated eyes. Deerfield senses, and so does the viewer, that his son's murder is linked to what happened to the boy in Iraq. On his son's cell phone, there are chaotic, confusing video fragments that suggest the combat atrocities that have appeared in dozens of Iraq documentaries and that pop up daily in our newspapers. "In the Valley of Elah" is deeply felt, but its revelations and plot twists aren't likely to shock or surprise anyone who's been paying attention to the physical and psychic price our soldiers have been paying in the war. As a murder mystery, Haggis's story (which a title informs us is "inspired by true events") doesn't generate much suspense—it's almost as if Haggis felt that emphasizing thrills would be unseemly, and would disturb his self-consciously elegiac tone.

Groups: Bin Laden plans video on 9/11 By LEE KEATH, Associated Press Writer
Fri Sep 7, 3:00 AM ET
CAIRO, Egypt - Osama bin Laden will release a new video in the coming days ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in what would be the first new images of the terror mastermind in nearly three years, al-Qaida's media arm announced Thursday.
The White House said any new video from bin Laden would serve to highlight threats the West faces.
One difference in his appearance was immediately obvious. The announcement had a still photo from the coming video, showing bin Laden addressing the camera, his beard fully black. In his past videos, bin Laden's beard was almost entirely gray with dark streaks.
Bin Laden's beard appears to have been dyed, a popular practice among Arab leaders, said Rita Katz, director of the SITE Institute, a Washington-based group that monitors terror messages.

Background: Four heavily armed Palestinian terrorists in October hijack the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, carrying more than 400 passengers and crew, off Egypt. The hijackers demand that Israel free 50 Palestinian prisoners. The terrorists kill a disabled American tourist, 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer, and throw his body overboard with his wheelchair. After a two-day drama, the hijackers surrender in exchange for a pledge of safe passage. But when an Egyptian jet tries to fly the hijackers to freedom, U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept it and force it to land in Sicily. The terrorists are taken into custody by Italian authorities. Counter- terrorist units from the U.S responded, including elements of Delta Force and SEAL Team Six, however the situation was resolved before an assault became necessary.

(1) A new video produced by Robert Greenwald (no relation), entitled "The Real Rudy," presents a truly devestating indictment of Giuliani's placement of New York City's Emergency Command Center in the World Trade Center notwithstanding that the WTC had been previously attacked, that terrorists had vowed to attack it again, and that his principal advisor urged that it not be placed in Lower Manhattan.
Far more significant than the poor judgment exhibited by the decition itself is, I believe, what appears quite clearly to be Giuliani's blatant and deliberate lying when asked repeatedly by Chris Wallace about what happened and why. Rather than acknowledge responsibility or explain what happened, Giuliani -- based on all of the available evidence -- conclusively seems to lie in order to blame the decision on aides and to protect himself.
Even Chris Wallace, who actually does conduct decent adversarial interviews at times with figures who are otherwise glorified by Fox News, seems to realize what Giuliani is doing. This video should be viewed far and wide as it really does provide a vivid look at how Giuiani functions. It can be viewed here.

(3) The extent to which Osama bin Laden is able to scare right-wing Bush followers simply by producing a video is hard to overstate. The minute it was reported that he would speak, the reaction was as predictable as it is sad.
Jim Henley examines the dynamic underlying this simultaneous fear and glorification of bin Laden by Bush followers. It should be noted that many of them are truly scared by bin Laden, while others gleefully and cynically exploit what they beleive -- and what Hillary Clinton bizarrely believes -- are the political benefits to Republicans from invoking his Scary Image.

Why the Term “Bedwetter” Became Popular
Because it fits! At popular deadender blog “The Jawa Report,” Rusty Shackleford reacts to a new video appearing on Islamic extremist websites:
[snip]
Apparently the actual “special gift” from OBL, still enjoying the alive part of dead or alive, is likely to be a new Bin Laden video. This makes sense. The “Petraeus Report,” or Petraeus and Crocker Report, or the White House Report in the Names of Petraeus and Crocker, will come out around September 11, possibly right on that date. Because this White House is to subtle staging of events what Ferdinand Marcos was to the discreet elimination of political opponents. But Bin Laden is worried it might not be enough. He desperately wants to keep America stomping all over Iraq and surely would love to encourage the Bush Administration to bomb Iran as well. Bin Laden profits politically from American militarism. He figures a sudden appearance of the Bogey Man - himself - ought to ensure the US Congress ponies up whatever money Al Qaeda’s useful idiot, the President, asks for. This kind of thing worked for him before.

(4) The language used by both the New York Times and the Washington Post to describe the possibility that we might withdraw a puny and symbolic number of troops by January of next year is, standing alone, quite telling.
The NYT says that "Gen. David H. Petraeus . . . . could accept the pullback of roughly 4,000 troops beginning in January" and refers to "General Petraeus's apparent agreement to a small withdrawal beginning early next year," while the Post headline proclaims "Petraeus Open to Pullout of 1 Brigade" and the article informs us that he "has indicated a willingness to consider a drawdown of one brigade of between 3,500 and 4,500 U.S. troops from Iraq early next year."
It's as though we are now ruled by the Supreme Commander, General David G. Petraeus. And the task is to convince him to "accept," to "agree" to, to be "willing to consider" a symbolic reduction in the number of troops at some point in the far off future provided a whole series of subjective conditions are met (to be determined at his sole discretion). And if our Leader, Gen. Petraeus, agrees to allow this, we can be grateful for his magnanimity and flexibility and thankful to our Congress for having stood so tall in such a bipartisan way.
Why not just pull out one single troop a year from now, maybe, if Gen. Petreaus thinks things are going well? The disaster of the Iraq War is a perfect expression of our rotted political class.

Balloon Juice - John Cole
And according to the NY Times, at least we don’t have to wait until the 11th:
Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top American commander in Iraq, has told President Bush that he wants to maintain heightened troop levels in Iraq well into next year to reduce the risk of military setbacks, but could accept the pullback of roughly 4,000 troops beginning in January, in part to assuage critics in Congress, according to senior administration and military officials.
General Petraeus’s view is considered overly cautious by some other senior military officials and some members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, officials said. But they said it reflected his concern that the security gains made so far in Baghdad, Anbar Province and other areas were fragile and easily reversed.
Notice the language- “Could accept.” It is a good thing we have Generals out there to set our policies. Civilian control of the military would suck.
If there is anyone out there who honestly thought Petraeus would come to Congress on the 11th and tell us it was time for a substantial drawdown or anything other than that “the surge is working,” please surrender your car keys to someone sane. I don’t want you on the road. Bush made it clear in his interview with Draper that we are here for the long haul, and that is what is going to happen. We are going to be there, in large numbers, until the military breaks. Or longer. Just get used to it. There is nothing you can do, because the Decider has decided. The dog and pony show that comes next week is just to make things easier politically for continuing the course of action that has been chosen- the reports we may withdraw some troops were just something thrown out there to mollify the opposition before getting back to Operation “DO WHATEVER THE FUCK WE WANT.”

More Balloon Juice
The Belgravia Dispatch this morning highlighted this FT piece:
President George W. Bush’s campaign to stay the course in Iraq is taking a new and constitutionally dangerous turn. When Senator John Warner recently called for a troop withdrawal by Christmas, the White House did not mount its usual counterattack. It allowed a surprising champion to take its place. Major General Rick Lynch, a field commander in Iraq, summoned reporters to condemn Mr Warner’s proposal as “a giant step backwards”.
It was Maj Gen Lynch who was making the giant step into forbidden territory. He had no business engaging in a public debate with a US senator. His remarks represent an assault on the principle of civilian control – the most blatant so far during the Iraq war.
Nobody remarked on the breach. But this only makes it more troubling and should serve as prologue for the next large event in civilian-military relations: the president’s effort to manipulate General David Petraeus’s report to Congress.
Mr Bush has pushed Gen Petraeus into the foreground to shore up his badly damaged credibility. But in doing so, he has made himself a hostage. He needs the general more than the general needs him. Despite the president’s grandiose pretensions as commander-in-chief, the future of the Iraq war is up to Gen Petraeus.
The general’s impact on Congress will be equally profound. If he brings in a negative report, Republicans will abandon the sinking ship in droves; if he accentuates the positive, it is the Democrats who will be spinning.
In fact, if not in name, it will be an army general who is calling the shots – not the duly elected representatives of the American people.

ACLU Scores a Big Win Against the Patriot Act
ACLU Scores a Big Win Against the Patriot Act
By: Jeralyn Merritt
A federal judge in New York today struck a fatal blow to the Patriot Act provision authorizing national security letters. The ACLU, which brought the lawsuit, reports:
The law has permitted the FBI to issue NSLs demanding private information about people within the United States without court approval, and to gag those who receive NSLs from discussing them. The court found that the gag power was unconstitutional and that because the statute prevented courts from engaging in meaningful judicial review of gags, it violated the First Amendment and the principle of separation of powers.
The case is Doe v. Gonzales and the 106 page opinion is available here (pdf). You can see a copy of a national security letter here (pdf).
This is an important decision. National Security letters are not just used to get records of suspected terrorists and they have a tremendous potential for abuse.

...
One Faux executive confided to The Washington Insider that the producers wanted to sign Thompson for the series because he was seen as a "natural," having already impersonated a conservative U.S. Senator for eight years. It is not yet known whether the new production will bring back the old stage props, such as Fred's red pickup truck. That may be fine for Tennessee, the executive said, but too unsophisticated for a national show. Rumors are also rampant that Jeri Thompson, who plays the leading distaff role as The Conservative’s child bride, doesn't like pickup trucks.

Media Campaign Goes After Four GOP Senators ...
... for Their Iraq Support
Four of the leading Republicans in the Senate who have offered constant support for Bush's Iraq policies are the targets of a huge ad campaign that will broadcast in their home states.
Organized by the Campaign to Defend America, the media campaign is going to make Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Norm Coleman, R-Minn., Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Pete Domenici, R-N.M., have a much tougher time explaining to their constituents why they aren't criticizing the ongoing occupation of Iraq in ads tailored to each politician.
Airing from Sept. 6-15, the high-quality ads depict children undergoing basic military training and contrast Republican priorities for funding an "endless religious civil war" to the tune of $450 billion instead of using that money for education or healthcare.

Aussie march to go ahead despite court order David Edwards and Muriel Kane
Published: Thursday September 6, 2007
Australians hoping to demonstrate against the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit which President Bush is attending in Sydney have been denied permission by a court to march near the security zone.
A small march by students protesting the Iraq War and global warming took place on Wednesday, and several rallies are planned for Friday, including an attempt by the Bums for Bush coalition to set a world record for "mooning."
However, up to 20,000 demonstrators are expected to march on Saturday and, according to the Australian Broadcasting Company, authorities are worried about the potential for a "full-scale riot."
The police are are threatening arrests if demonstrators disobey the court order, but representatives of the Stop Bush Coalition said they have no intention of provoking a confrontation, stating, "The court order today prohibits nothing. Our rally and demonstration will be going ahead."
The following video is from Australia Broadcasting Company News, broadcast on September 6.

Hi! I'm Mitt Fucking Romney.
Fucking glad to fucking meet you!
It appears that Mitt is a misdemeanor pottymouth, not a felony pottymouth:
On February 10, 2002, while overseeing 2002 Winter Olympics, ROMNEY became extremely angry upon encountering a traffic jam at a venue and proceeded to berate two persons authorized to direct traffic there, including with obscenity laced tirades, according to a police captain at the scene and a volunteer targeted by ROMNEY. The traffic volunteer Shaun Knopp stated that ROMNEY "asked me who the f___ I was and what the f___ I was doing. We got the Olympics going on we don't need this s___ down here."8 Weber County Sheriff's Office Capt. Terry Shaw, commander of the Snowbasin venue, stated that ROMNEY twice used the F-word while also berating one of his officers, Deputy Kodi Taggart. Capt. Shaw stated that ROMNEY "was abusive" to his officer and advised, unsuccessfully, that "he needs to apologize."9 ROMNEY denied part of the allegation, insisting he hadn't used the F-word since high school -- but admitted he used a word he described as "H-E-double hockey sticks." Disposition: The Utah Department of Safety advised it had decided against initiating a "profanity probe."10
"H-E-double hockey sticks", that's just adorable.
For those keeping score at home and have trouble remembering which Republican is which: Mitt Romney is the one who asks police what the fuck they are doing. Larry Craig is the one who wants to fucking do police.

George and Osama sittin' in a tree...
George Bush loves to invoke September 11th. So does Osama Bin Laden.
The fact that Bin Laden is still alive and able to make these tapes mocking America is a testament to Bush's failed leadership. Of course, the Bush administration hopes we're all suitably frightened by the Bin Laden tape:
The White House said that any new video message from bin Laden would only underscore the threat the United States and other nations face from extremists.
Actually the Bin Laden underscores the fact that Bush has failed to capture or kill the guy who masterminded the attack on America on 9/11.
If we still face a threat from Bin Laden six years later, it's Bush fault.

Founder and Executive Director
American Land Rights Association
Dear Mr. Cushman,
I've been a fan of yours for many years and am very appreciative of the work you've done for the Wise Use movement. It hasn't been easy lately. With J. Steven Griles and Jack Abramoff headed for prison, Gayle Norton gone from Interior, and Richard Pombo still wondering what the hell happened to his campaign, you've lost most of your best friends and allies in government.
I thought you were going to lose another with this whole Larry Craig brouhaha. But I guess I underestimated how hard you'd defend the Senator. I have to give it to you, your defense strategy is pure genius. Rather than trying to defend the Senator's completely heterosexual stall bobbing ways, you're taking on the real villains in the scandal, the land-grabbing tree-hugging hippy cops who are trying to destroy our western way of life, or as you put it in your call to boycott of Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport:
By ambushing Senator Larry Craig, the Minneapolis St Paul Airport Police have effectively declared war on the West. They are primarily responsible for greatly weakening private property rights and Federal land use advocates in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and in Congress.
Although I think you're pretty close to the truth there, I don't think you've dug deep enough. Who's behind the land-grabbing tree-hugging hippy cops of Minneapolis-Saint Paul? And what are their motives?
Well, the answer is out there just waiting to be heard, and I mean that literally. Have you ever listened to how Minnesotan's speak? It's all "aboot" this and all "aboot" that. They're nothing but a bunch of God damned Canadastanians.

NBCnews.com is reporting the White House has obtained a copy of a purported video by Osama bin Laden ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and has begun to analyze its contents, a Bush administration official said Friday. The official would not discuss the contents or say whether any conclusion has been reached about whether it's really the al-Qaida leader.
Celebrating 9/11
We're only a few days from the sixt anniversary of the 9/11 attack on America and we are celebrating by:
1. Getting a report from General Petraeus on how we are doing in Iraq (which, as you will remember had nothing to do with 9/11 except in Bush's imagination)...
2. Pondering a new video from Osama Bin laden who, as Bush said, we are going to get "Dead or Alive"... of course we didn't know it meant dead from old age...
3. Seeing which Republic Party candidate can be more war-oriented (last night Letterman pointed out that the Republics were divided between those for the war and those "really for the war".)...

Majadle: Alleged IAF flyover
Majadle: Alleged IAF flyover won't spark war with Syria
By JPOST STAFF AND AP
In the first reaction from an Israeli official to Wednesday night's alleged IAF foray over Syria, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Ghaleb Majadle said Friday that IAF planes enter Syrian airspace on a daily basis, adding that he did not believe the latest alleged incident would spark off a war.
Majadle told the Nazareth-based A-Sinara newspaper that while he had no specific information about the latest alleged operation, it was likely that "the planes either entered Syrian airspace to take photographs or in error."
Earlier Friday, Syria accused Israel of jeopardizing the chances of success in the upcoming US-sponsored Middle East meeting.
Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Ja'afari told Al-Jazeera that the alleged IAF operation came only a few hours after Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo had published a message of support for the meeting and had called for Syria to be invited.
Also, a Syrian government newspaper warned that the country "possesses the means to respond ... so that it will deter Israel against proceeding with such unpredictable adventures."

New Twist In Saga Over ‘Petraeus Report’: There Will Be No Report

New Twist In Saga Over
New Twist In Saga Over ‘Petraeus Report’: There Will Be No Report
In the latest twist to the ongoing saga over the Petraeus White House report, a senior military official tells the Washington Times today that there will actually be no report at all:
A senior military officer said there will be no written presentation to the president on security and stability in Iraq. “There is no report. It is an assessment provided by them by testimony,” the officer said.
The only hard copy will be Gen. Petraeus’ opening statement to Congress, scheduled for Monday, along with any charts he will use in explaining the results of the troop surge in Baghdad over the past several months.
To recap, first the public was incorrectly led to believe that Gen. David Petraeus would issue his own report about the situation on the ground in Iraq. Then the Los Angeles Times reported that the so-called “Petraeus report” would “actually be written by the White House.”
Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) then suggested the White House would probably “tweak” the “Petraeus report.” In an effort to put the controversy to rest, Gen. David Petraeus assured lawmakers that the White House was not going to be involved in the “writing” of the report:
Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.), told reporters Thursday that Petraeus said he and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker had briefed the administration on the situation in Iraq, but added that “as far as [Petraeus] is concerned … he is writing his recommendations of that report and testimony.”
Now, apparently there will be no written report from Gen. Petraeus at all. While Petraeus’ statement to Congress will be made available, the public will not know what information he is providing to President Bush. The lack of transparency over Petraeus’ “report” will only intensify the high level of skepticism surrounding his statistics.
Digg It!
UPDATE: In a recent hearing, Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) said he recently met with Gen. Petraeus and was shown “the data.” Coleman said the data is “very clear about a reduction in violence. General Petraeus has those charts,” Coleman explained. Apparently, those charts will not be for public consumption.

Today's Must Read By Spencer
Today's Must Read
By Spencer Ackerman - September 7, 2007, 9:37 AM
We've been writing for a while about the difficulty of getting clear and consistent measurements about security in Iraq. The Government Accountability Office stated this week that there hasn't been a measurable decline in attacks on civilians over the course of the surge, something that General David Petraeus' command sharply disputes. Making matters more complicated, the Pentagon's quarterly Iraq reports have recently taken to revising its earlier estimates of sectarian killings without indicating what prompted the change. The statistical confusion is likely to play a prominent role in Petraeus' Congressional testimony next week.
So it's significant that Petraeus gave a subtly defiant interview to the Boston Globe's Charles Sennott. Petraeus, true to form, attaches qualifiers and caveats to his assessments, but he hits his main points hard: his is a "solid plan" that is achieving results, from the pacification of Anbar province to the increased capability of Iraqi Army and police forces that "hold" neighborhoods in Baghdad. He implies that the Sunni tribal turn against al-Qaeda is a turn for "reconciliation" with the Shiite-led Iraqi government, something that his subordinate commanders have doubted.
Unlike his interview last weekend with the Australian, though, he cites no statistics about overall declines in casualties. Instead, he pointedly states that "what our troopers have achieved is measurable and important." It's a loaded statement, implying that to question the statistics distributed by Multinational Forces-Iraq is to criticize the troops on the ground. That's something the GAO took great care not to do in its report this week, writing that the troops have "performed courageously under dangerous and difficult circumstances."
Something else to look for: Petraeus appears to anticipate a question about whether all or most of Baghdad has, in fact, been made secure. (He told the Australian that sectarian violence was down 75 percent in the capitol.)
As we have demonstrated through the employment of the forces that we have, we do not necessarily have to secure every part of Baghdad at once -- this can and has been done in stages. As the security situation in an area improves, forces are required to hold the gains that we have made. Over time some of those forces can be local police units working with the Iraqi Army and Coalition Forces in Joint Security Stations.
That sounds like Petraeus is conceding that Baghdad remains, at least in parts, unsecured. He's never explicitly said otherwise, and he would understandably resist being expected to solve the capitol's problems in less than a year. Indeed, to me and to other reporters, he's discussed how the Iraqis need to come to terms with an "acceptable" level of violence: after all, no city of 7 million can be completely secure. But expect Congress to grill him on what he's actually saying about the levels of security throughout Baghdad -- and how he measures it.

Edwards To Propose Creation
Edwards To Propose Creation Of International Counterterrorism Organization
By Greg Sargent - September 7, 2007, 9:55AM
Here are some advance excerpts of the big counter-terrorism speech John Edwards will be giving today at noon in New York City.
Edwards will propose the creation of an organization called Counterterrorism and Intelligence Treaty Organization, a kind of NATO-knockoff devoted to coordinating anti-terrorism activities between countries "on all continents."
"CITO will allow members to voluntarily share financial, police, customs and immigration intelligence," Edwards will say. "The new organization will also create a historic new coalition. Those nations who join will, by working together, show the world the power of cooperation. Those nations who join will also be required to commit to tough criteria about the steps they will take to root out extremists, particularly those who cross borders. Those nations who refuse to join will be called out before the world."
We're not sure what that last line would mean in practice, but hopefully Edwards will elaborate in the speech. Meanwhile, here's another key line from the speech: "We need a counterterrorism policy that will actually counter terrorism."
More excerpts after the jump.
From Edwards' speech:
There is now only one key question we must ask ourselves: are we any closer to getting rid of terrorism than we were six years ago? And the terrible answer is no, we’re further away. Today, terrorism is worse in Iraq, and it’s worse around the world. So what does all this mean? It means the results are in on George Bush’s so-called “global war on terror” and it’s not just a failure, it’s a double-edged failure.
***
We saw the promise of a new multilateral approach just a couple of days ago in Germany. The terrorists the German authorities caught were plotting massive attacks on American interests. They had been trained in Pakistan, had a network in Turkey, and were captured through German and American intelligence. We must be able to coordinate similar operations throughout the world—in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and anywhere terrorists would attack.
***
As president, I will launch a comprehensive new counterterrorism policy that will be defined by two principles – cooperation and strength. The centerpiece of this policy will be a new multilateral organization called the Counterterrorism and Intelligence Treaty Organization. Every nation has an interest in shutting down terrorism. CITO will create connections between a wide range of nations on terrorism and intelligence, including countries on all continents, including Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. New connections between previously separate nations will be forged, creating new possibilities.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran must pay $2.65 billion to the family members of the 241 U.S. servicemen killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, a federal judge ruled Friday, calling it the largest-ever such judgment against another country.
Iran has been blamed for supporting the militant group Hezbollah, which carried out the suicide bombing in Beirut. It was the worst terrorist act against U.S. targets until the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Most people 'want Iraq
Most people 'want Iraq pull-out'
Most people across the world believe US-led forces should withdraw from Iraq within a year, a BBC poll suggests.
Some 39% of people in 22 countries said troops should leave now, and 28% backed a gradual pull-out. Just 23% wanted them to stay until Iraq was safe.
In the US, one-in-four supported an immediate withdrawal, while 32% wanted Iraq's security issues to be resolved before bringing the troops home.
The BBC World Service commissioned the survey of 23,193 people.
In the survey, people were asked whether coalition troops should pull out of Iraq immediately, commit to a gradual withdrawal over a year, or leave when the security situation improves.
In 19 countries, the majority of those questioned believed troops should be withdrawn either immediately or within a year.
Just three countries - Kenya, the Philippines and India - did not have an overall majority favouring withdrawal within a year.
Large numbers of people questioned in India (36%) declined to comment or said they "didn't know".
Muslim countries including Indonesia (65%), Turkey (64%) and Egypt (58%) were among those most eager for troops to be withdrawn immediately.
But an immediate pull-out was much less popular in Australia (22%), the US (24%) and UK (27%) - the countries with most troops deployed in Iraq.
Troop cuts
The top US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, is considering withdrawing about 4,000 troops starting in January, media reports say.

NBC News has announced that Christian Broadcasting Network senior national correspondent David Brody will appear on the September 9 edition of NBC's Meet the Press: "We will have insights & analysis on the race for the White House and the busy week in politics with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network and John Harwood of the Wall Street Journal and CNBC." As Media Matters for America documented, in an August 21 post on his CBNnews.com blog -- titled "Fred, You're Such a Tease!" -- Brody characterized male blogger Lane Hudson, who filed a complaint against former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) with the Federal Election Commission, as Thompson's "angry girlfriend." In his complaint, Hudson accused Thompson, who announced on September 6 that he is running for president, of violating the Federal Election Commission's "testing the waters" clause.
After asserting that Thompson was handling speculation about his presidential campaign "like the cool, handsome jock in high school who teased all the girls who wanted to go out with him," Brody wrote: "Well, now Fred Thompson has an angry girlfriend. His name (don't go there) is Lane Hudson."

Author of secret Iraq report
Author of secret Iraq report declares Iraqi government 'in collapse' John Byrne
Published: Thursday September 6, 2007
State Department official says political solution 'hopeless'
The confidential version of Congress' Congressional Research Report on Iraq declares that Iraq's government is "in collapse," according to the New York Daily News' James Meek, who first acquired the report.
The report was completed Aug. 15 for the House and Senate, as President Bush geared up for a fresh battle with Congress over his intent to 'stay the course.'
RAW STORY acquired a copy of the report from the Daily News. It can be read here in the original (PDF).
"My assessment is that because of the number and breadth of parties boycotting the cabinet, the Iraqi government is in essential collapse," Kenneth Katzman, the author of the report, said, according to Meek. "That argues against any real prospects for political reconciliation."
Without a political infrastructure in Iraq, any military progress would be short-lived, he added.
As a whole, the 62-page report is typical of those conducted by the Congressional Research Service, a nonpartisan arm of Congress tasked with investigating topics of interest to members. The report expounds on myriad aspects of Iraq's political, economic and security challenges.
Katzman questions the troop surge in the report.
"I would even question the military progress," he also declared.
A top diplomat -- who remained unnamed -- told Meek any political solution to the war is now "hopeless."
"I would agree with that," Katzman said.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is trying to stave off the collapse of his government while fending off rivals at a time when the country has already spun out of control.
The report said al-Maliki's government was "collapsing."

Well, I guess that'll make it harder to prosecute General Petraeus for lying to Congress.
[snip]
While Petraeus’ statement to Congress will be made available, the public will not know what information he is providing to President Bush. The lack of transparency over Petraeus’ “report” will only intensify the high level of skepticism surrounding his statistics.
You see, I'm sure if we had those charts, then 1) we'd be able to point out how deceptive they were while Petraeus was in front of Congress and 2) we'd be able to show that Petraeus ignored real data to put together those charts and fake 75% decreases in violence.
At some point Democratic Members of Congress need to start calling this charade what it is: a willful intent to lie to Congress. And leave almost no paperwork that might mean Petraeus would get caught.

... Apparently, the Pentagon has a double super secret formula that it uses to distinguish sectarian killings (bad) from other deaths (not important); according to press reports, all deaths from car bombs are excluded, and one intelligence analyst told The Washington Post that “if a bullet went through the back of the head, it’s sectarian. If it went through the front, it’s criminal.” So the number of dead is down, as long as you only count certain kinds of dead people.

During the September 6 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for, as Media Matters for America documented, calling Media Matters "assassins" who smear people with whom they disagree through The New York Times and NBC News. Olbermann stated: "But our winner -- oh, he's back from vacation. Bill-O, ripping the, quote, 'assassins' of the, quote, 'fringe element centered around an outfit called Media Matters. They have two primary mainstream media outfits to get their defamation out. That's The New York Times and NBC News.' "
Two More Makes 72 Congress Members for Peace
Reps. Chris Murphy and Jesse Jackson, Jr., have agreed in the past day to co-sign the second mailing of this letter commiting to vote against any war funding that does not end the occupation of Iraq by January 2009. The second version of the letter will be sent to Bush later this month. The other 70 signers are listed at the bottom of the letter. 363 Congress Members have still not signed on, including all but one Republican (Ron Paul) and including these members of the Progressive Caucus: Rep. Becerra, Bordallo, Brady (PA), Brown (FL), Capuano, DeFazio, DeLauro, Farr, E.B. Johnson, Tubbs-Jones, Kilpatrick, Kucinich, Loebsack, Miller (CA), Serrano, Slaughter, Thompson (MS), Tierney, Udall (NM), Watt, and Waxman. Adding these names would get us well on the way to a majority of the Democratic Caucus.
