Does Norman Finkelstein Constitute a Security Threat to DePaul University? - You Bet He Does!

by Bill Williams / August 27th, 2007

On Friday, August 24th, it was learned that DePaul’s University has decided to cancel Professor Norman G. Finkelstein’s classes for the autumn quarter. Finkelstein was scheduled to teach two undergraduate courses in the political science department, one called “Freedom and Empowerment” and the other called “Justice and Social Equality”.

What is the stated reason for the cancellation of Finkelstein’s courses, both of which are filled to capacity?

re: gonzo

Mr. Roehrkasse said Sunday afternoon that he had telephoned Mr. Gonzales about the reports circulating in Washington that a resignation was imminent, “and he said it wasn’t true, so I don’t know what more I can say.”

way to go, gonzo! right up to the very end. and you say he's not consistant.

the real winner

is us.

Nope, nothing will change...or will it?

The hydra of incompetence will just sprout another two idiotic heads...BUT, you just have to relish every moment of this don't you, Anon? Yes, even you. I mean, think about it. The attorney firing scandal story was broken and pushed into the mainstream media by TPM. One of the lowly blogs and non-mainstream media everyone seems so willing to pooh-pooh yet secretly exploit. They nailed the carcass of the AG to the fucking wall and it didn't take Rovian dirty pool or Starr dollars to do it. Just good ol' netroots honesty and real journalism. That's just a fucking kick to me and the coffee tastes so much better in my world when that sort of thing prevails, even if only for a second or two. Of course, that's just my tinfoil world. My utopian dreamscape.

Closest guess

looks like Mark in Vancouver. Didn't Maron have a guess?

DISGRACED ..... NOT "EMBATTLED"

WHY don't the MSNBC ,CNN ,CBS headlines say

DISGRACED AG ... dont you think "embattled" is total bullshit?

Hes been called "The Worst AG Ever"

This isnt just a case of wanting to spend more time with his family, he was caught lying to congress and SUBVERTING JUSTICE !!!!

Cant the news even TRY to report the truth ?

Jesus.... and he didnt "resign"... he was forced out, eVen the most corrupt Republican Senators threatened him with impeachment.

goodun on the last thread 60th! repost?

i read all the comments here whan i can, sometimes i feel just as frustrated as you folks feel at times. i’ve been at this since 1968 or so and what you feel does morph slightly as time goes by.

however i’m well aware of the slime trail that gonzo and his main man are leaving and dreading the ‘appointment’ while congress vacations.

Gonzo is gone but not escaped… i want to see him behind bars with Rummy, Rove and about 20 others.

re: Gonzo Gonzo

The minute I heard the surprising and GREAT news this AM that Gonzo was going to be gonzo, I wondered who won the bet from the good 'ol days of Sam being on the radio on AA in the morning.

I can't wait to hear who the winner is.

For whatever it's worth, I can't wait till Sam is on the radio in the old time slot... it would be sooooo nice to have something to listen to again.

Long time til SEDER on Sunday, but I hope we get the run down.

Financial News: Mystery Trader Bets Market Will Crash By Third

Smartmoney.com

An anonymous investor has placed a bet on an index of Europe's top 50 stocks falling by a third by the end of September, as world equity markets plunged for a third day and volatility hit a three-year high.

The mystery investor has bought put option contracts on the DJ Eurostoxx 50 index that will result in a profit if it plunges to 2,800 or below by the end of September. Based on the 2,800 strike price, the position covers a notional EUR6.9 billion, and potentially even more using a market price of about 4,100 when the trades were done on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The identity of the investor is unknown but market sources speculated it was either a large hedge fund hedging itself against deepening losses, or a long-only fund manager pressing the panic button to protect its gains.

The investor has bought a total of 245,000 put options on the index. The September put option with a 2,800 strike was the most popular DJ Eurostoxx 50 contract yesterday, according to data from Bloomberg.

Volatility in European equity markets has risen sharply this week as investors cut back on the amount of risk they are taking. The VSTOXX index, which measures the volatility of the DJ Eurostoxx 50 index, hit 34 this morning, which is more than double its three-year average.

Similarly the volatility of the U.S. stock market was trading at almost three times its three-year average, hitting 30 yesterday.

However, both indices continue to trade below their 2002 highs.

European stock markets were trading down almost 3% at by 1300 GMT today, after large drops in Asia and Australia overnight. The Australian market fell 300 points at one stage when futures trading was suspended for over an hour and traders were forced to hedge positions by selling physical stocks rather than futures.

An analyst at Goldman Sachs JB Were in Australia wrote: "I think I shall remember this day as the day that I saw the market go to hell, look into the abyss - didn't like what it looked like and then came screaming back up as far away from there as it could get...It was a truly spooky day and I've seen a lot over the last 20 years but today will be one that anyone who saw it will never forget. But this is what market bottoms are made out of."......

Bush can make a recess apointment... Why do you think Bush waied until congress was in recess?

Bush is above the law; all dictators are. Getting congressional approval is just so "democratic" , it wouldn't feel right to Bush.

Thanks for this link, dada ... good one...

The Great Iraq Swindle

...
The explanations that contractors offer for all the missing dollars, all the myriad ways they looted the treasury and screwed guys like Russell Skoug, rank among the most diabolical, shameless, tongue-twisting bullshit in history. Going back over the various congressional hearings and trying to decipher the corporate responses to the mountains of thefts and fuck-ups is a thrilling intellectual journey, not unlike tackling the Pharaonic hieroglyphs or the mating chatter of colobus monkeys. Standing before Congress, contractors and the officials who are supposed to monitor them say things like "As long as we have the undefinitized contract issue that we have . . . we will continue to see the same kinds of sustension rates" (translation: We can't get back any of the fucking money) and "The need for to-fitnessization was viewed as voluntary, and that was inaccurate as the general counsel to the Army observed in a June opinion" (translation: The contractor wasn't aware that he was required to keep costs down) and "If we don't know where we're trying to go and don't have measures, then we won't know how much longer it's going to take us to get there" (translation: There never was a plan in place, other than to let contractors rip off every dollar they could).

According to the most reliable estimates, we have doled out more than $500 billion for the war, as well as $44 billion for the Iraqi reconstruction effort. And what did America's contractors give us for that money? They built big steaming shit piles, set brand-new trucks on fire, drove back and forth across the desert for no reason at all and dumped bags of nails in ditches. For the most part, nobody at home cared, because war on some level is always a waste. But what happened in Iraq went beyond inefficiency, beyond fraud even. This was about the business of government being corrupted by the profit motive to such an extraordinary degree that now we all have to wonder how we will ever be able to depend on the state to do its job in the future. If catastrophic failure is worth billions, where's the incentive to deliver success? There's no profit in patriotism, no cost-plus angle on common decency. Sixty years after America liberated Europe, those are just words, and words don't pay the bills.

Russia Arrests 10 in Reporter’s Killing

MOSCOW (AP) -- A Chechen crime boss, Russian police and security officers were involved in the death of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Russia's top prosecutor said Monday. But he suggested that someone outside Russia masterminded the killing of the frequent Kremlin critic.

Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika spoke hours after announcing that 10 people were arrested in the October killing of Politkovskaya, a crime that has blackened the reputation of President Vladimir Putin's resurgent Russia.

Chaika's remarks echoed earlier statements by Putin and allies who have suggested Politkovskaya's slaying could have been plotted by Kremlin opponents abroad to damage Russia's image.

The prosecutor said investigators had determined that ''only individuals located outside the bounds of the Russian Federation'' could have had an interest in killing the journalist.

Politkovskaya, who criticized Putin and revealed human rights abuses in Chechnya, was shot dead Oct. 7 in her Moscow apartment building. He killing drew international attention, deepening Western concerns about Russia's course and compounding concern about the safety of journalists and Kremlin critics in the country.

"Globalization has deepened the conflict over which class will shape the future. The capitalist class is planning more miseries for the majority. The alternative is for workers in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa to come together as one workforce to demand equal pay for equal work. We would then have the collective power to dispense with the master class and run the world for ourselves and each other, raising living standards for everyone."

This Modern World

What President FuckTard

Didn't Mention: The Misery Our Staying in Vietnam Caused

...
The facts, however, are at variance with Mr. Bush’s statements concerning the suffering of Southeast Asians. Millions of Cambodians died on the “killing fields” because secret American carpet bombing destroyed their nation and created an environment in which armed thugs led by Pol Pot took over unchallenged. In 1969, President Nixon ordered every available American plane into Cambodia to "crack the hell out of them." He wanted them to “hit everything." Secretary of State Henry Kissinger subsequently transmitted the order to his top aide, Alexander Haig, this way: “Anything that flies on anything that moves." When Cambodia collapsed under the weight of the American Air Force, Prince Sihanouk fled to China, and the bad guys took over. Cambodian life under the bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge is well documented.

But what of the Vietnamese people and their other neighbors? In his speech, Mr. Bush spoke of “boat people” and “re-education camps,” certainly a chaotic, frightful time for millions of innocent peasants, but Mr. Bush failed to mention that was not the extent of their suffering. The tragic aftermath of the American invasion of Southeast Asia kills and cripples to this day. More than thirty years after the Vietnam War, the misery index rises even though the shooting has long stopped. Historians, scholars, political scientists and high-level government officials have written volumes about America’s experience in Vietnam, and careful examination of a representative sample of this material reveals a wealth of understanding. Estimates range as high as 3,000,000 Vietnamese men, women and children and an additional 1,000,000 Cambodian/Lao were killed or wounded during the fighting, but that’s only the beginning.
...

Chertoff

I think that his name flying around as much as it has is another "Hey, look over there" play (remember, Rover is around for a few more days) and they have no intention of appointing him. I also think Hatch is not going to give up a Senate career to be AG for 14 months in a lame duck administration. Danforth won't work as someone suggested because he is already disqualified for this WH. He has some integrity.

What's Bork doing?

Not mere coincidence

that Gonzales quit right after Rove - Schumer just said.

He knows they are all crooked.

Everyone watching Schumer on CSPAN?

Quite a good speech and questions from the press now.

Schumer is hitting just the right tone.

Once a jerk, always a jerk

August 26, 2007 -- Once a jerk, always a jerk

Virginia 8th District Democratic Congressman Jim Moran, who has never served in the military, joined Washington Democrat Brian Baird in praising General David Petraeus' "progress" in Iraq, just weeks before the long-awaited Petraeus Report will be delivered on the progress of George Bush's "surge."

Moran, who is a member of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and who receives generous donations from war-profiteering defense contractors based in his district, which extends from Alexandria through Arlington and out the Dulles Access Road to yet other contractors in Reston and the Dulles airport area, has paraded around as an anti-war congressman.

Now, as Virginia's senior Republican Senator John Warner calls for a U.S. troops withdrawal from Iraq, Bush is buoyed by Moran -- a longtime member of the "Blue Dog Democrats," a group of centrist and conservative Democrats. A Bush official called Moran's and Baird's trip a "net plus" for the White House.

Moran, in praising the briefing he received from Petraeus. told the New York Times, "I just don’t see Congress pulling up stakes."

Moran, who was disciplined and rebuked by his Democratic opponents in March 2003 for remarks he made about Jewish support for the war in Iraq, has now been brought back into the fold by his colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus and Democratic Leadership Council. In March 2003, Moran told a town hall meeting in Reston, "If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this . . . The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should." Moran later apologized for his remarks but was stripped of his seniority positions in the House.

Moran was also the subject of repeated stories concering his temper, including an assault on a seven year old African American boy who Moran accused of trying to hijack his car and repeated domestic disturbances that involved intervention by the Alexandria police. While Deputy Mayor of Alexandria, Moran pleaded nolo contendre in 1984 in a misdemeanor conflict-of-interest case involving city funds and the owner of a city parking garage.

Moran, who many in the 8th District feel is a "jerk," is no stranger to the politics of flip-flopping. This editor considered a 2004 run against Moran in the Democratic primary. Moran's tremendous political war chest deterred those plans.

Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured

August 27, 2007 -- Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured by the United States

"Al Qaeda" leader Osama bin Laden not only received diplomatic protection from the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina but his presence in Bosnia during that nation's civil war was not only known to the CIA but encouraged and supported, according to information received from U.S. and European intelligence sources.

Bin Laden supported Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic's desire to create a fundamentalist Islamic republic in the volatile Balkans. In return for Bin Laden and his mujaheddin's military and financial support for Izetbegovic and his government, Bin Laden was issued a Bosnian passport in Vienna in 1993.

After the Saudis stripped Bin Laden of his citizenship officially in 1994, Bin Laden's Bosnian passport was an advantageous gift for the Saudi insurgent leader in his travels between Sudan, Europe, and Afghanistan. Vienna served as a financial hub for the Third World Relief Agency (TWRA), an Islamic charity established in 1987 by Sudanese diplomat Fatih el Hassanein, Fatih's brother Sukarno Hassanein, former Bosnian Defense Minister Hasan Cengic, former Bosnian intelligence official Irfan Ljekakovic, Izetbegovic's co-founder of the Muslim Party for Democratic Action (SDA) Salem Sabic, and Izetbegovic.

TWRA's accounts in Vienna were handled by the First Austrian Bank. Austria, officially neutral in the Balkans conflict, was pressured by the Clinton administration to permit the functioning of the financial and weapons smuggling operation being conducted by the Muslims in Vienna.

way cool!

wheres that from?

good day for Iching reading too!

Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured

There is also some speculation that the five pages of Top Secret documents former Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger spirited out of the National Archives involved Clinton administration knowledge and support for the mujaheddin units in the Balkans, which included members that would later carry out the 9/11 attacks. Berger removed the documents in preparation for his 2003 testimony before the 9/11 Commission. Berger was charged by the Justice Department with removing five Top Secret pages from a report by Richard Clarke on the Al Qaeda Millennium bomb plot, as well as handwritten notes.

Three of the pages were never recovered because Berger cut them up with scissors. It is possible that documents from Clinton National Security Council, under Berger and his predecessor Anthony Lake, may have shown that the U.S. approved of presence of Bin Laden and his lieutenants in Bosnia to help Izetbegovic's forces.

There is an interesting wrinkle to the Berger story. The chief of the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section who investigated Berger is Noel Hillman, who worked under Michael Chertoff*, who, as federal prosecutor in north Jersey, helped cover up important evidence in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Hillman was also a lead prosecutor in the case against Jack Abramoff and Alabama's former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman. It was Hillam who decided to judge shop for Judge Mark Fuller after his first case against Siegelman was dismissed with prejudice by Federal Judge U. W. Clemon. Hillman gave Berger a free pass in the Archives matter, saying he only removed copies of classified doceuments contained on computer hard drives in the facility. Hillman is now a sitting Federal judge in Camden, New Jersey.

From 1992 to 1995, the TWRA account was flush with $350 million received from various Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Malaysia, Brunei, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Sudan, where Bin Laden was based. One government that did not support the Bosnian Muslims was that of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Hussein was a close ally of the Russians and Serbia's Slobodon Milosevic.

A classified French DGSE intelligence report obtained by WMR shows that French intelligence considered Bin Laden and his forces in Darunta, Afghanistan remained under the operational control of the CIA and Britain's MI-6 until 1995.

However, based on information recently received by a covert U.S. intelligence source who served in Bosnia, Bin Laden's relationship with the CIA continued well past 1995 and into at least 1998, the same year Bin Laden was charged with bombing U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Bin Laden left Sudan for Afghanistan in 1995.

Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured

The TWRA arranged for the smuggling of weapons from Sudan and Iran to the Bosnian Army. The group was also linked to the blind Egyptian cleric, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, considered the mastermind behind the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. As previously reported by WMR, a CIA source told us that in the trial of Rahman, National Security Agency communications intercepts in Arabic and Farsi were not revealed because they would have shown a continuing intelligence link between the CIA and Afghan mujaheddin members, including Bin Laden, Rahman, and a mujaheddin military cell operating in Bosnia and later in Kosovo that included at least three of the 9/11 hijackers, including "lead hijacker" Mohammed Atta. The decision to keep the intercepts untranslated and secret was made by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and his colleague in New Jersey, Michael Chertoff*.

Bin Laden's deputy, the Egyptian Dr. Ayman Zawahiri, reportedly ran Bin Laden's military network in Bosnia from a headquarters, known to the CIA, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Bosnian Islamists also had close links with the U.S. mercenary firm Military Professional Resources, Inc. (MPRI) and a special Bosnia Defense Fund set up at Riggs Bank in Washington to accept hundreds of millions of dollars in charities from Muslim nations.

An official of Riggs said that when he complained that some of the money in the Bosnia Defense Fund account at the Bosnian Central Bank in Sarajevo was "bleeding" into the hands of those illegally purchasing arms for Al Qaeda and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Bosnia, he was told to "just make it fucking happen" by one of the fund's officials. Two officials of the Bosnia Defense Fund, who also acted as advisers for the Bosnian government at the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, were the arch-neocons Richard Perle and Douglas Feith.

Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured

According to a Bosnian intelligence document, another account held at the Sarajevo Deposit Bank showed a 300,000 Deutsche Mark donation to Izetbegovic from Yassin Kadi, a one-time Chicago-based Egyptian/Saudi businessman linked to Bin Laden's various financial interests around the world.

Later, a similar U.S. support network for Albanian Kosovar Muslims was set up and also was linked to Osama Bin Laden. The Al Qaeda leader set up a special money laundering operation in Macedonia that provided cash to Albanian guerrillas in Kosovo. In fact, Bin Laden was reported to have visited an army of 500 of his guerrillas in eastern Kosovo in 2000, an indication that Bin Laden's relationship with the CIA was still going strong one year before 9/11.

Ralf Mutschke of Interpol's Criminal Intelligence Division, testifying before the House Judicial Committee on December 13, 2000, stated, "The U.S. State Department listed the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) as a terrorist organization, indicating that it was financing its operations with money from the international heroin trade and loans from Islamic countries and individuals, among them allegedly Usama bin Laden [sic]. Another link to bin Laden is the fact that the brother of a leader in an Egyptian Jihad organization and also a military commander of Usama bin Laden [sic], was leading an elite KLA unit during the Kosovo conflict."

On October 8, 2001, a few weeks after 9/11, Bensayah Belkacem, a Bin Laden associate, was arrested by NATO's Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia. Belkacem's was found to have a number of blank passports in his possession.

Bin Laden's Excellent European Adventure: Protected and Nurtured

Last year, UN prosecutors in The Hague censored the testimony of British journalist Eve-Ann Prentice at the trial of the late Serbian President Slobodon Milosevic. Prentice covered the Balkans wars for The Guardian and Times of London and was about to tell the court that she personally witnessed Bin Laden walk into Izetbegovic's office in Sarajevo in November 1994. That would have been during the time frame that French intelligence said Bin Laden remained under the operational control of the CIA and MI-6. It is well-known among the UN tribunals in The Hague, Arusha, and Abidjan that U.S. military Judge Advocate General lawyers have been assigned to prosecution staffs to ensure nothing damaging is ever revealed during any of the trials involving past intelligence clients of the United States, including Bin Laden, the KLA, Bosnian mujahhedin, Rwanda's Paul Kagame, Uganda's Yoweri Museveni, and Liberia's Charles Taylor.

WMR has learned that NATO peacekeepers in Bosnia, including Canadians and Norwegians, as well as Polish peacekeepers, identified some a number of mujaheddin fighters at NATO checkpoints in Bosnia in 1997. At one checkpoint possibly up to three of the 9/11 hijackers, including Mohammed Atta, were identified by NATO soldiers. There is additional evidence that Bin Laden was also in Bosnia coordinating mujaheddin efforts against the Serbs and that his headquarters in Bocina Donja, a one-time Serb village, was considered off limits to NATO troops and just about anyone else who had no reason for being there during 1997. There is also credible evidence that Mohammed Atta, the lead 9/11 hijacker, served as a liaison between Bin Laden's forces and the CIA and the U.S. military forces in the country.

Sarkozy calls for timetable for Iraq troop withdrawal

PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for a clear timetable to be set for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq in his first major foreign policy address.

'The Iraq tragedy cannot leave us indifferent. France was, thanks to Jacques Chirac, and remains hostile to this war,' which was triggered by the US invasion in 2003, he said at the fifteenth Conference of Ambassadors in Paris.

'The political solution includes the marginalisation of extremist groups and a sincere process of national reconciliation, which must include every segment of Iraqi society -- and God knows there are a lot -- and every Iraqi being assured of fair access to the institutions and resources of their country,' Sarkozy said

'It also includes a clear horizon concerning the retreat of foreign troops,' he added. 'It is then and only then the international community, starting with the countries in the region, will be able to act most usefully. France, for its part, will be prepared to help.'

During the conference, Sarkozy also said France supported a policy of openness to Iran as long as it respected its obligations in the nuclear domain, and reaffirmed it was unacceptable for Iran to arm itself with nuclear weapons.

Financial markets also indicating a September "Surprise"

August 27, 2007 -- Financial markets also indicating a September "Surprise"

WMR has learned from British government sources that billions of dollars in "put options" are being placed by anonymous investors in the United States and Europe. These speculators are betting that the value of a number of stocks will drop by one-third around the time of a suspected market crash sometime before September 21.

The word from the City of London is that "big trades are being made by mysterious traders."

The week prior to 9/11 saw six times the number of put options placed on the stocks of companies directly affacted by the terrorist attacks, including American and United Airlines, Morgan Staley Dean Witter, Merrill Lynch, and Swiss Re.

On August 22, WMR reported on chatter about a possible "incident" in the San Francisco Bay area during the Labor Day weekend.

WMR has now learned that the Treasury Department plans to conduct an unprecedented "emergency exercise" with some 3000 banks around the country during the month of September. Officially, this exercise is being billed as a drill for a potential bird flu pandemic but the timing -- September -- has some financial analysts and experts concerned.

Adding to the jitters was the recent statement by former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers about the risk of a recession in the same sentence he mentioned 9/11: "It would be far too premature to judge this crisis over . . . I would say the risks of recession are now greater than they've been any time since the period in the aftermath of 9/11."

I say make a put for Sept. 18th, or rather the day before.

No reason, except I do think the markets will fall.

goddessdelirious.com

the biggest reason the markets will fall

is that september is when we will see the hard data about the "liquidity" crisis that occurred over the past month. also, the 18th is around the time the fed will have its meeting. whatever it does, won't be enough for some which will also increase the volatility.

No... Sept. 18th. Buy a put ... everything to ride.... on 9/18

the main hexagram reading was

#50 NOURISHMENT

Here, worldly deeds are given up for the nourishment of a higher spiritual essence. Appreciate anyone who reveals the divine. This will bring great good fortune. Spiritual understanding illuminates our vision of earthly matters.

Line 5: If you are available, honest and unassuming, you will easily find people willing to help you with your projects. Continue your self-improvement through introspection and learning.

Line 6: Your spirituality has evolved to a mild, pure, but strong luster. You will have great good fortune and success.

The changing hexagram was

#28. EXTREME OVERLOAD
The environment is temporarily laden with many events, ideas and situations demanding your consideration. You may struggle in your attempt to solve problems. Don't be bothered by misunderstanding and lack of appreciation from others of your attempts to solve problems. Maintaining your composure will help you succeed. Don't use forceful methods. Be flexible and prepare for quick transitions.

In a development not yet made public, knowledgeable Republicans say that Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is likely to take over the Republican Governors Association in 2008. The move is significant because RGA Vice Chairman Matt Blunt (R) has been in line to become chairman next year. Governor Blunt is the son of U.S. House Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R). - But Blunt's re-election is now in doubt.

slammed in robo-call:

I'm an Iraq vet, and like many of you, I am a long time supporter of your Congressman, Brian Baird. One of the reasons I have supported him in the past has been his opposition to the war in Iraq, but I was completely disappointed in Congressman Baird when he returned from a tightly scripted trip to Iraq and announced that he has decided to oppose Democratic proposals to begin the withdrawal of our troops from that religious civil war.

The so called surge has been a complete failure. The surge was supposed to provide more security to make space for political reconciliation, but this has been the bloodiest summer in Iraq since the beginning of the war, and there is no political reconciliation in sight.

Frankly, someone with as much education as Congressman Baird should be ashamed at allowing himself to fall for the spin from the White House PR machine. If you're as angry as I am at Congressman Baird, attend his town meeting in Vancouver on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Fort Vancouver High School, 5700 E. 18th St. Let him know we expect him to stand by the commitment he made during the last election to end the war in Iraq.

Gonzo Resigns

If Chertoff-a demonstrable failure both as an administrator and as a defender of justice-is the best this administration can come up with as a replacement for Gonzales, we should be worried about the future of the nation's "justice" system. (Okay, I concede that the Justice Department has as much to do with justice as the Defense Department has to do with defense or the Education Department has to do with education.)

The one good thing that can be said about the Gonzales resignation is that it eliminates the Democratic leadership's latest gambit for attempting to derail the impeachment movement. As support for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney has grown, both among the public at large and in Congress, where there are now at least 20 co-sponsors for Rep. Dennis Kucinich's Cheney impeachment bill, the Democratic leadership in the House scrambled to get behind a purely inside-the-beltway "campaign" to impeach Gonzales-a move that did succeed in dividing the real, authentic impeachment movement.

The interesting thing is that in backing the impeachment of Gonzales, those leaders and senior House Democrats who have been brushing off the broader impeachment movement gave the lie to two of their main arguments against impeachment-that it would be "too divisive" and that there "isn't time" for impeachment. Clearly if it wasn't too late to impeach Gonzales, and if impeaching Gonzales would not be too divisive, neither is it too late to impeach Cheney and neither would impeaching Cheney be "too divisive."

This is an amazing story I just heard on AAR's news service.

Quebec police admitted sending the agitators at a demonstration at the recent sumit between Mexico/Canada/and the USA. This is crazy. The officials were hoping to discredit the demonstrators so they sent their own ass clowns to crap all over the scene. Something is really rotten here.

Kush, with Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up

Tony Allen

Bill Christison on Middle East

Let's say it bluntly. War with Iran is inevitable before January 2009 unless Bush and Cheney are both impeached first. New Israeli-U.S. hostilities in Lebanon are also likely. Either warfare or covert actions conducted by the U.S. and/or Israel to bring about regime change in Syria are also probable.

But those of us in the U.S. who claim to be peace activists ought to be ashamed. With rare exceptions, the powers in the movement are confident that things are already going our way, what with the Democratic Party's success in the 2006 congressional elections and the continuing disaster the Bush administration faces in Iraq. Most self-labeled peace activists think the odds so favor further Democratic victories that, as a group, we do not need to run any risks or do anything new to take the presidency away from the Republicans in 2008. It's old hat, maybe, but the best thing to do, most peace activists believe, is just to keep talking about withdrawal from Iraq, while patting ourselves on the back and emphasizing to each other that we are being admirably mature and responsible in not moving too fast toward actual withdrawal.

Bill Christison

So let's admit that many of us sustain ourselves with hot air even when the subject is limited to Iraq. Let's admit too that few want to discuss the role Israel played in encouraging the U.S. to invade Iraq in 2003, because that would be unnecessarily criticizing Israel. In fact, both the Israel lobby and the Israeli government probably concluded as early as May 2003 that they had already achieved their own principal objectives in Iraq, and that it was counterproductive for them to waste their own credibility by continuing to oppose every aspect of the U.S. peace movement's criticism of the war. Even before things began going wrong in the war's execution, Israeli propagandists were soft-pedaling their own top officials' support for the war. But underneath, the support was definitely there, hard and firm.

When it comes to matters in the Middle East other than Iraq, most peaceniks are even less willing to address questions of the Israel lobby's involvement in U.S. policymaking. Talking about this would be the surest way to reveal the disunity and embarrassing differences within the so-called peace movement. In order to avoid an open discussion, it is easier for most of us simply to ignore the voluminous evidence that both the lobby, and senior U.S. officials who are in effect part of the lobby, are pushing the U.S. toward war, particularly with Iran, but also toward regime change in Syria and resumed hostilities in Lebanon. If it comes to war with any or all of these countries, most peace types note that they are not pushing for it, and they will silently hope more wars do not erupt, but they will not make a lot of noise about stopping such wars before they start. In this, they are simply following most of the leaders of the Democratic Party.

Oh yeah?

Chertoff to be Recess Appointed

Bush is likely to recess appoint Chertoff as Attorney General, breaking deal with Senate leader Harry Reid.

Michael Chertoff, the co-author of the USA PATRIOT ACT and the man behind the massive failure of FEMA during hurricane Katrina, could be recess appointed without the consent of the 110th Senate.

Shortly before the Senate broke for recess in August, Bush and Senate leader Harry Reid struck a bargain concerning Bush’s dubious recess appointing practices. Reid promised not to block some of Bush’s judicial nominees during the next session, and in return, Bush would not install any recess appointees to vacant positions while Congress was in recess. That may all change now with the resignation of current AG Alberto Gonzales.

President Bush, it has strongly been suggested, is going to claim "exigent circumstances", breaking his deal with Reid not to recess appoint anyone, and install Michael Chertoff as Attorney General, sans any vetting by the Senate.

How does anyone KNOW that the Dems will not continue on the same course?

We KNOW the Democrats will continue on the same [easy] course because they are afraid they will rock the boat and thereby endanger their big visions for '08. Meanwhile.....OUT in the STREETS! Pressure them the way we were in '03.

Not to mention that according to Pilger

more wars have been started by Liberal Democrats than Republicans...And so even tho that fact is not wide spread, the illusion of the anti war Dem candidates permeates mass thought...and so people must feel like there are no other choices...(I'm rushing off back to work...will think on this and maybe clarify it later)...

See you later on Nicky Rose... :)

2-Party

I agree with Howard Zinn in that, through pressure, there is a chance to move the Democrats to do the right thing. Democrats provide some political space with which we can operate. I hate this bleak situation we are in. I want to believe that the Dems are clearly better. But the party frequently acts, on many issues, not much differently than the Republicans. And the triangulations! Hey. Get involved with your local anti-war movement. That will help you put things in perspective. Might bring about change, too.

Gold: I don't know what will happen. But I do know that governments pour in money to protect certain sectors. If an incredible panic occurred and gold became the only real source of value, it would be because of political considerations--and preventable. Are you talking about gold as an investment? In that case, it may be a good way to make money. People get scared and invest in gold. Scarcity of bullion makes the price rise--unless the mint more coins. Really, though, I don't know. maybe gold is the only way to keep wealth in the coming massive world breaking mega-depression.

That's not what I meant

The TOPOFF 4 Full-Scale Exercise

A Rigorous Full-Scale Response to a Coordinated Attack

Taking place October 15-24, 2007, the TOPOFF 4 Full-Scale Exercise (T4 FSE) will feature thousands of Federal, State, territorial, and local officials. These officials will engage in various activities as part of a robust, full-scale simulated response to a multi-faceted threat. The exercise will address policy and strategic issues that mobilize prevention and response systems, require participants to make difficult decisions, carry out essential functions, and challenge their ability to maintain a common operating picture during an incident of national significance. As in a real-world response, agencies and organizations will deploy staff into the field and will face realistic incident-specific challenges, including the allocation of limited response resources and exercise actions needed to effectively manage conditions as they emerge. Planning and preparation for the exercise will also help strengthen working relationships between departments and agencies that are critical to successful prevention and response in real emergencies.

More "hmmmmm?"

2of3

Extensive National Participation

The T4 FSE will involve more than 15,000 participants representing Federal, State, territorial, and local entities. For the first time, a U.S. Territory, Guam, will participate in the TOPOFF series, providing an opportunity to practice coordinated prevention and response activities between the continental U.S. and a U.S. territory. At the Federal level, exercise play will be marked by the coordinated participation of multiple agencies and departments. For example, in addition to response, DHS will be exercising prevention through its Terrorism Prevention Exercise Program (TPEP). In the weeks leading up to the full-scale exercise, law enforcement and intelligence community players will work the information gathering, intelligence analysis, and information sharing capabilities that help to thwart terrorist activities. In addition, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will mobilize around emerging public health issues related to a radiological emergency, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) will run concurrent exercises to address global terror threats.

And finally...

3of3

Exercise Scenario
The T4 FSE is based on National Planning Scenario 11 (NPS-11). The scenario begins as terrorists, who have been planning attacks in Oregon, Arizona, and the U.S. Territory of Guam, successfully bring radioactive material into the United States. The first of three coordinated attacks occurs in Guam, with the simulated detonation of a Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), or “dirty bomb,” causing casualties and wide-spread contamination in a populous area near a power plant. Similar attacks occur in the hours that follow in Portland and Phoenix. An RDD is not the same as a nuclear attack. It is a conventional explosive that, upon detonation, releases radioactive material into the surrounding area. Although it does not cause the type of catastrophic damage associated with a nuclear detonation, there are severe rescue, health, and long-term decontamination concerns associated with an RDD. Real weapons will not be used in the scenario, but the response will be mounted as if they had been.

So Gonzales and Rove ride off into the sunset together. How convenient. They can run out the clock from the comfort of their Texas mansions, at which point they will expect that the Democrats, if they win, will opt to "move forward" and "heal the nation's wounds."

There is a lot of chatter on the cable shows about who is going to replace Gonzales and whether there will be a confirmation fight. The gossip is that it will be Clement continuing to stonewall as acting AG for as long as they can get away with it and then Chertoff. Or maybe a member of the Senate club, Cornyn or Hatch. Jane even thinks they might put up Lieberman! (Personally, I think that might be the best thing that could happen. He'd be out of government entirely in 18 months.)

Sen. Larry Craig arrested, pleads guilty. Roll Call reports today that Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport for “lewd conduct” in a men’s public restroom. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He “paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation.” The arresting officer’s report explains:

My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall. From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me. […]

At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area.

UPDATE: Larry Craig called Bill Clinton “a bad boy, a naughty boy” in 1999.

I'm sure you've all heard what Chris Matthews called "the very sad news," by now. Yes it's reported that Senator Larry Craig was arrested in Minnesota a couple of months ago for lewd conduct in the airport men's room:

From Roll Call:

According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the men's public restroom in which Craig was arrested.

Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the men's restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.

US ambassador to UN: Middle

US ambassador to UN: Middle East turmoil could cause world war Ron Brynaert
Published: Monday August 27, 2007

According to the US Ambassador to the United Nations, turmoil in the Middle East could lead to another world war.

"Zalmay Khalilzad told the daily Die Presse the Middle East was now so disordered that it had the potential to inflame the world as Europe did during the first half of the 20th century," Reuters reports.

The Middle East "is going through a very difficult transformation phase. That has strengthened extremism and creates a breeding ground for terrorism," Khalilzad said in remarks translated by Reuters into English from the published German. "Europe was just as dysfunctional for a while. And some of its wars became world wars. Now the problems of the Middle East and Islamic civilization have the same potential to engulf."

Khalilzad, who has served on Bush's foreign policy team since 2000, also "was a charter signatory of the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) founding statement of principles, and he signed two subsequent PNAC letters," according to Right Web.

“We may soon face a threat in the Middle East more serious than any we have known since the end of the Cold War,” Khalilzad wrote Clinton along with fellow PNAC members and future Bush administration members/Iraq war architects Donald Rumsfeld, John Bolton, Richard Perle, and Paul Wolfowitz in January of 1998. “Although we are fully aware of the dangers and difficulties in implementing this policy, we believe the dangers of failing to do so are far greater.”

Excerpts from Reuters article:

#
Khalilzad, interviewed by Die Presse while attending a foreign policy seminar in the Austrian Alps, said the Islamic world would eventually join the international mainstream but this would take some time. "They started late. They don't have a consensus on their concept. Some believe they should return to the time (6th-7th century) of the Prophet Mohammad," he was quoted as saying. "It may take decades before some understand that they can remain Muslims and simultaneously join the modern world."

Khalilzad was also quoted as saying Iraq would need foreign forces for security for a long time to come. "Iraq will not be in a position to stand on its own feet for a longer period," he said in the interview.

Asked whether that could be 10-20 years, he said: "Yes, indeed, it could last that long. What form the help takes will depend a lot on the Iraqis. Up to now there is no accord between Iraq and the United States about a longer military presence."

The Great Iraq Swindle

How Bush Allowed an Army of For-Profit Contractors to Invade the U.S. Treasury

How is it done? How do you screw the taxpayer for millions, get away with it and then ride off into the sunset with one middle finger extended, the other wrapped around a chilled martini? Ask Earnest O. Robbins -- he knows all about being a successful contractor in Iraq.
You start off as a well-connected bureaucrat: in this case, as an Air Force civil engineer, a post from which Robbins was responsible for overseeing 70,000 servicemen and contractors, with an annual budget of $8 billion. You serve with distinction for thirty-four years, becoming such a military all-star that the Air Force frequently sends you to the Hill to testify before Congress -- until one day in the summer of 2003, when you retire to take a job as an executive for Parsons, a private construction company looking to do work in Iraq

Fired attorney: Rove,

Fired attorney: Rove, Gonzales resignations 'absolutely linked' David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Published: Monday August 27, 2007

Like President Bush's top political adviser, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned to avoid encroaching Congressional investigations, a fired federal prosecutor said Monday.

During an appearance on CNN, former US Attorney David Iglesias said Gonzales's resignation is "absolutely linked with Karl Rove leaving two weeks ago," and speculated the two resigned "for the same reason": Congressional investigators closing in on their suspected roles in the attorney-firing scandal.

"This is what happens when there is not check and balance" under a Republican-controlled Congress and White House "and all of a sudden you have a new sheriff in town - so to speak - that wants answers to hard questions."

Due to obstruction by Gonzales and other Bush officials, Iglesias added, the extent of the White House's attempt to have politically inconvenient prosecutors fired remains unknown. "We still don't know who put our names on that list," he said. The former US Attorney for New Mexico contends that he was fired after two Congressional Republicans - Sen. Pete Dominici and Rep. Heather Wilson - urged him to speed indictments of a Democratic state senator before the election.

"What triggered this [resignation] was Attorney General Alberto Gonzales going in front of the US Senate and not being fully candid, telling half truths (and) having very convenient memory lapses," Iglesias said Monday. "Had he shot straight with the American people and shot straight with the Senate, perhaps a lot of this would've been mitigated."

The Justice Department's credibility has sunk to Nixon-era levels under Gonzales's soon-to-end tenure, Iglesias charged. "I'm not aware of the Justice Department losing so many top people, probably since ... the early 70s during the Watergate scandal," he said.

Iglesias wouldn't comment on any specific names that have been mentioned as possible replacements for Gonzales, but he called for an end to partisan influence within the Justice Department.

"I just hope that the next Attorney General is a person who understands the core mission in the Justice Department is not to play politics, it is to enforce the law," Iglesias said. "And it's to give the president hard advice that he sometimes doesn't want to hear like, 'Mr. President, you can't do that, it's not constitutional.'"

Justice Department Resignation Roll Call
By Paul Kiel - August 27, 2007, 2:42 PM
The circle is pretty much complete at the Justice Department with Gonzales' resignation today. Here's a rundown of the numerous resignations over the past several months connected to the U.S. attorney firings scandal.

1) Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, today.

2) Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty announced his resignation May 14th.

3) Acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer (the Department's #3) announced that he was withdrawing his nomination for the position June 22nd.

4) Kyle Sampson, Gonzales' chief of staff, resigned March 13th.

5) Department White House liaison Monica Goodling resigned April 6th.

6) Michael Elston, McNulty's chief of staff, resigned June 15th.

7) Executive Director of the Executive Office of United States Attorneys Michael Battle, announced his resignation in mid-February.

8) Bradley Schlozman, an attorney in the Counsel to the Director staff at the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, formerly the U.S. attorney for Kansas City and a former acting assistant attorney for the Civil Rights Division, resigned mid August.

And, finally, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Wan Kim was another notable resignation (on August 23rd), although Kim's troubles were unrelated to the firings scandal.

An Innocent Misunderstanding

Senator Larry Craig has released details of his defense following his arrest by undercover officer Sgt. Dave Karsnia in a Minnesota airport restroom. The Senator spoke publicly immediately after his arraignment in a Minnesota courtroom.

"After I closed and locked my luggage in my hotel room," he explained, "I noticed that I had inadvertently failed to pack one sock." Reporters drew closer to him on the courthouse steps as he continued, "I placed the errant sock into my pants pocket. Later, when I entered the airport restroom, I noticed that a gentleman dropped a few playing cards from the deck he was carrying. He picked them up and entered a stall. I entered the adjacent stall. Again, he dropped a few playing cards and I saw his hand as he picked them up. A third time he dropped a few cards and it was at this time that I remembered the sock in my pocket. I spoke through the stall divider, 'Excuse me sir, can I sock your deck?' It was at this time that the officer presented his identification."

Counsel for Senator Craig, Phibbs Andhowe (of the famous firm), interrupted at this point and advised the gathered throng that there would be no additional statements nor would questions be taken.

Senator Craig adjusted his boa and both he and his attorney entered a waiting limousine before heading south.
