If we had three hours

We'll only have two hours for the debut of Seder on Sundays because AAR only had six weeks lead time to organize the schedule and apparently these things are very complicated to work out.  Next week we will have our normal three hours. Had we had three hours this week, we'd discuss this story.

It's not just that Russert somehow perceives his lack of honking to be a salute to victims of 9-11- I can understand people having there own little superstitions or idiosyncrasies, though it reminds me of Santorum's bumper sticker plea. But why is he trumpeting this publicly as some type of indication that HE is acutely aware of this attack on a daily basis.

Anyway, if we had three hours tomorrow, Russert's implied assertion that only God is in a position to judge his worth as a "newsman" would be in the running for the Comfy Chair Award more on that later.

UPDATE: People have been asking why there's no mention of Seder On Sundays on the Air America website. I'm assuming they just haven't gotten around to it yet. The show starts at 4pm (est).

UPDATE II: Don't forget to check out Bill Scher's crosspost on the Weekend Watchdog project, I'm not the only one working on the weekend!

looking forward to the new show!

Thanks, Sammy!

SEDER! Great segments last night on Malloy's Show! Very impressive, as always and I loved that you guys put AAR under the microscope. Hopefully, the Drobnys were listening, and, if they know what's good for them, the Green Bros., as well. It's not like any of us don't know how this works, though, we've been watching that Democratic noodle-spined political side-show for years now.

PS. I just found a stamped envelope with a check in it that I wrote out for Nikki's DVD a month ago! D'oh! Now I have to add a couple of 1 cent stamps to it! Errg! I hope it didn't set you guys back too far on the April mortgage.

An addendum to my Open Mic post on Liberal vs. Conservative documentary filmmaking. Ugh. A shameless blog rescue, I know, but when Moore does things like this, I can't help but heap enormous kudos on the man's extraordinary way of combining biting irony and bottomless compassion. It's why conservatives have such a hard time with him and with the truth.

Has anyone done investigative journalism to see if Russert's Dad actually WAS in the military? That he "left school in the 10th grade"? Any journalists looking in to this? Maybe sone interns on the Daily Show can turn something up.

Also, is there any way you can use a chat room that enables all of us to see the messages you are receiving?

Vet Prosecuted for Opposing Recruitment in Library

...
“One more word from you and I’ll arrest you,” the police officer told Tim.

Then Tim shouted, “Don’t let the military recruit people in the library.”

Whereupon the police arrested him and took him to the station and booked him for disorderly conduct. A little while later, Yvette came and picked him up.

The district attorney did not return phone calls for comment.

Library Director Dotterer would not talk except to say: “I contacted my board president, who is an attorney, and he indicated that because this is an ongoing case we’re not going to comment. What I would refer you to are the official police reports.”

The police report says Coil was arrested for “causing a disturbance within a library.”

At an April 30 pretrial meeting, Coil was asked if he wanted to make a plea and settle the whole thing.

“No, I’m not guilty,” he said, according to his wife.

She explains: “We’re Mennonite. To lie about that would be wrong. I don’t want him to go to jail. Neither does he. He doesn’t need that. But I believe that God’s going to take care of it. We’re OK with whatever happens. The point is if we don’t stand for these freedoms and we don’t allow ourselves to be put on the line for those things, there won’t be an option anymore.”

Lula's double agenda

D.E. Is Lula playing with two agendas? One with Chavez and another with Bush? How important might an eventual agreement on ethanol between the United States and Brazil be in creating obstacles for Latin American integration?

P.S.dA. Really, Lula only has one agenda : to win the confidence of imperialism as its most favoured partner in South America. Beyond the scene-setting game for internal efect, above all with the popular sectors that sympathise a lot with the Bolivarian revolution, the "friendship" with Chavez helps increase Brazil's room for manoeuvre with the United States. Should such a deal come about the preference for the ethanol option might really douse the dreams of greater Brazilian participation in an alternative programme of Latin American integration

Ethanol marries agri-business with the auto industry - the new great landowners with old international capital - giving a further push to the pattern of peripheral neoliberal accumulation that condemns Brazil to deepen the process of return to neocolonialism that has been on course now for more than thirty years.

Some realizations?

AAR doesn't really WANT Sam (anymore than they wanted Maron when they pretended to be negotiating with him).

Listening to Sam on Malloy last night made me hope that the Nova M folks would make a hard charge to get him in their fold.

Under The LobsterScope

Russert's corruption is obvious

Russert is all agog at his dad's simple human decency. I guess that'll happen when the gene isn't passed down.

The way he gushes about his dad volunteering (like millions of others) after Pearl Harbor.

How he turned down Tim's offer of a new Mercedes when he started making the big bucks. Not everybody wants to look like a pompous bigshot driving around a status symbol wholey out of place in the neighborhood for the aggrandizement of his son's reputation. Be my guess Timmy didn't realize his father was more than a little embarrassed that his son turned out to be such a grasping sycophant, shedding all the morals Russ thought he'd imparted as he climbed the ladder and wanted no part of being a rolling billboard for Tim's blatant sell out for success. The fact that Russert finds these qualities - common to most people who aren't driven to kick and claw or brownnose their way to the top - so exceptional shows just how morally bankrupt he is.

Chris pirello's take on vista:

"I'm seriously afraid of doing anything in Windows Vista anymore.
This time, my gripes have nothing to do with user interface hiccups or random app usability snags. No, this house has been suffering through Blue Screens of Death for the past week. There's seemingly no rhyme or reason to them¦ seemingly, not actually.
This afternoon, when my Web browser was getting ready to access my Logitech Webcam (USB) via Flash, Windows decided to choke and give me some kind of IRQ conflict BSOD. Could be a hardware problem, could be a software problem - but it's a problem (my problem) nonetheless. I'm getting ready to chuck this machine and start fresh.
(if Apple's desktops weren't so damn expensive, they may have been a viable option at this point.)
No matter, I woke up to this other (power related) BSOD the other morning - and everybody who was watching my live stream got to see it hours before I did:

Ergh. Maybe this is an urban legend, but wasn't Windows Vista supposed to have killed the Blue Screen of Death? I realize that most crashes are caused by video drivers, but the fact that I'm running NVIDAs in here doesn™t help the situation (as NVIDIA's drivers have proven themselves to be anything but reliable, stable, or half-as-solid as ATI's)."

From a description of the movie "Rocky Balboa:"
"Stallone asked Carl Weathers, Mr. T, and Dolph Lundgren for permission to use footage from their appearances in the earlier Rocky movies. Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren gave him their graces, however Carl Weathers wanted an actual part in the movie, even though his character died in Rocky 4, as stated by Stallone on Jimmy Kimmel Live Dec. 21, 2006. Stallone refused and Weathers decided not to allow Stallone to use his image for Rocky flashbacks from the previous movies. They instead decided to use new footage of a fighter who looks similar to Weathers."

From The Nation...

Watch Katrina vanden Heuvel tomorrow morning, Sunday, May 20, on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos. The program airs at 10:00am in most places but check local listings or click here to confirm broadcast time in your area. The Nation's editor and publisher will be part of a media roundtable discussing the news of the week with George Will and Fareed Zakaria.

Don't miss vanden Heuvel's Editor's Cut, her regularly-updated Nation weblog.

And tune in to Comedy Central's Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Monday, May 21 at 11:00pm nationally for an interview with Nation Books author Zevi Chehab on the subject of his just released new book, Inside Hamas: The Untold Story of the Militant Islamic Movement.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, our friends at TruthDig are sponsoring what is sure to be a lively and important debate on religion, politics and the end of the world this Tuesday, May 22, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles. Chris Hedges and Sam Harris will face off on the most fundamental questions of human belief in a free-wheeling dialogue moderated by Robert Scheer. A nonbeliever and a believer--one who sees religion as a scourge and one who argues that the loss of the spiritual has plunged our society into violence and extremism--Hedges and Harris have both written passionately about religion and will lock horns in what promises to be a fascinating evening of dialogue.

From Zapatismo and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Letter to the Editor, LA Times (unpublished)

To the Editor: I was pleased to see your coverage of the Mexican Supreme Court's upcoming decision on the "Ley Televisa," which would be disastrous for free speech and consolidate media monopolies ("Court to Decide Battle of Airwaves in Mexico," May 12). It is important to remember that these are not merely abstract, constitutional issues but have devastating effects on people's lives. May 3 marked the one-year anniversary of the Mexican government's violent repression in the town of San Salvador Atenco, where 3500 federal police beat, raped, and arrested hundreds of men and women, murdering a 14-year old boy and a university student. TV Azteca and Televisa played a leading role not in covering the violence, but in actively calling for it -- squashing what little hope we continue to hold for objectivity. We can only hope the Court strikes down this law in the interest of not only free speech, but also human rights. Sincerely, Daniel Nemser

Dr. Laura son linked to lurid Web page --

-Site contained violent, sex-oriented images-- one official called 'repulsive'

The Salt Lake Tribune

The soldier son of talk radio relationship counselor Laura Schlessinger is under investigation for a graphic personal Web page that one Army official has called "repulsive."

The MySpace page, publicly available until Friday when it disappeared from the Internet, included cartoon depictions of rape, murder, torture and child molestation; photographs of soldiers with guns in their mouths; a photograph of a bound and blindfolded detainee captioned "My Sweet Little Habib"; accounts of illicit drug use; and a blog entry headlined by a series of obscenities and racial epithets.

The site is credited to and includes many photographs of Deryk Schlessinger, the 21-year-old son of the talk radio personality known simply as Dr. Laura. Broadcast locally on 570 KNRS, "Family Values Talk Radio," the former family counselor spends three hours daily taking calls and offering advice on morals, ethics and values. She broadcast a show from Fort Douglas, in Salt Lake City, last week.

Military leaders have long grappled with how to balance positive publicity and operational security with technological opportunities for troops to tell their personal stories.

The Pentagon last week shut down access to a variety of video-sharing and social networking Internet sites, including MySpace, on its computer systems worldwide. Officials said the change was made to enhance security and protect a strained bandwidth, but critics worried that it might close a public window into the lives of deployed U.S. troops, some of which can be raw, frightening, violent and revealing.

"Yes . . . F---ING Yes!!!" said one blog entry on the Schlessinger site. "I LOVE MY JOB, it takes everything reckless and deviant and heathenistic and just overall bad about me and hyper focuses these traits into my job of running around this horrid place doing nasty things to people that deserve it . . . and some that don't."

Deryk Schlessinger joined the Army in 2004, telling a crowd of Santa Barbara, Calif., Army reservists gathered for an appearance by his mother that he resented the way Americans criticize the war without recognizing soldiers' sacrifices......

Dr. Laura: My concern after 30 years on radio, taking calls from adults, kids, grandparents, young people, is that especially since the 60s there has not been very much thinking about the impact of daily [parental] behavior on children - it's basically not bothering to think about it.

On my program I shock and horrify, upset and offend a lot of people because I put up a mirror to their attitudes and behaviors – and what they don't do – and the impact it's having on their kids.

PRINEVILLE, Ore., May 19 Les Schwab, founder of a U.S. chain of tire stores bearing his name, died in Oregon this week at 89, the Portland Oregonian reported Saturday.

Schwab grew to become a familiar face in the Pacific Northwest with his television commercials and a chain of stores that topped 400 and racked up $1.6 billion in sales last year.

"There will never be another Les," Phil Wick, chairman of Les Schwab Tire Centers, said in a statement. "He was a visionary, and all of us who worked with him will stay true to his vision of integrity, service and treating people right." Schwab launched his company in his hometown of Prineville in the 1950s after serving in World War II and a pillar of the small central Oregon town until his death, the newspaper said.

As part of his devotion to customer service, all employees of Schwab from president on down were required to begin their careers changing tires at one of his stores.

Order Without Law: Where Will Anarchists Keep the Madmen?

Once the State law-enforcement monopoly is destroyed, and the inadequate State protection of person and property is no longer forced upon us, each ex-citizen will have the opportunity to consume protection services according to his own tastes and preferences. If he is a risk-lover, he may reduce his expenditures on protection services far below that level which he was forced to pay implicitly through taxation. If the risk-lover's estimate of the risk he faces and the competitive market's estimate are the same, he may even demand no protection services at all! However, most people exhibit risk-averse behavior, particularly when faced with large-loss, small-payoff risks. Since non-purchase of protection services can be thought of as such a risk, we thus expect risk-averse persons to exhibit an effective demand for protection services.

"We need to keep supporting his show on the weekends so the AAR geniuses can realize the mistake."

Seder's show will draw mass attention, but I think the suits at AAR already have it in for him considering he is nowhere on their new "2.0" site. What a bunch of asshole corporate shitheads. Check out AAR's home page under Green's comments. There are 657 comments counted under that post, but not when you click to see them. Only the first 90 show up. I guarantee you there are shitloads of gripes there Green doesn't want you to see lest it lessen the impact of his "Air Americans" and "2.0" bullshit promo. They disabled making multiple pages viewable and there should be 7+ pages of comments at 90 per page. Here's an interesting thing, though. Look at the comments that are up on their first page and how pro-Lionel they are. Then scroll all the way down, in the middle drop-down menu at the bottom, choose the option "Date-newest first" This will flip the board and show the most recent comments. On the back end there is only one guy praising Lionel. Some "AAR is a business" corporate-sycophantic tool shilling for Green with the screen nic "AARFanatic." It's probably Green himself. These guys are morons.

New

What progressive movement?

I don't think that is true.

Not more than every one else who considers herself a real progressive.

I listened three hours to Alex Cockburn on CSpan and he was such a relief to listen to after all the same old punditry every day. Superintellect, brilliant speech, easily discusses history and Real time. Plus he is v. civil and charming ....and old enough to remember a time before the year 2000 ;-) And I appreciate that one these days when, well, thirty is considered old enough to "opine" about everything. I always shake my head when these kids pundits tell the country what is going on and what has to be done.

AC should be on TV every day. EVERY DAY. But he wont. Because he is too smart.

For Anyone who consider's herself only halfways progressive
Counterpunch is a must read.

Who doesn't critize the Dems these days - but at least the writers have a point to make - they know what they are talking about cause the Counterpunch people present an amazing pool of experience and knowledge - from Government, History, Scholarship, Foreign Affairs .... and more. And if the Dem party and the Dems are being criticized on Counterpunch at least its not done just for the heck of it. Compare that to the nonsense from the Arianna Huffington ilk who have tried to bash and undermine the Dems since 1992. HuffPost That online Celeb mag is certainly on everyone's list. There is v. little progressive about it. Well, as I can see, its not on Sam's right now.

I can't believe the comments re Counterpunch I have read from the socalled "netroot" leaders and their bloggers. Stuck in the 60s the Counterpunch people are supposedly, with the same attitude .... that kind of stuff. Its just plain ignorant and stupid. But I wont name names. But I could because I have read some nasty stuff. But they couldn't be more wrong.

The good thing is that on our small MRR blog here people have always linked to Counterpunch. Compare that to you know who ...

What does that tell me?

Exactly. Only the people who don't want to be challenged

and refuse to think even when it might hurt ;-)

read the choir and nothing but

Criticism of fav. candidate, for instance - of course, the choir doesn't want to know about the unfavorable stuff. But I do.

You Have to go into your Account section and it has a place in there that shows different time zones .... and you have to choose the one you are in.

Thanks!

I should have guessed that it is Greenwich Mean Time (which is now, alternately and inexplicably, called Universal Time, which seems kinda ambitious to me...or Zulu Time, though I haven't checked to see if the Zulu's are in the same time zone as Greenwich?).

I'm on Bait Time, which is five fingers (or toes) less than Greenwich Mean Time and usually fifteen minutes late and several euros short of a dead president.

Ain't Gonna Do It. Wouldn't Be Prudent.

No fucking way! The last time that I went into my Account Section, I wandered around aimlessly in the labyrinth for two days until a kindly Minotaur handed me a fiver to go away and leave him in peace.

Bush's Latest Last Gasp

The Immigration Issue is Bush's Latest Last Gasp. He (or, more accurately, Cheney) has failed miserably in every other quarter. The Presidential push is on for something, anything, that can be historically cited as a positive in the "legacy" column.

Unfortunately for Bush, the Immigration Issue is among the last that he would have tackled given an otherwise successful tenure in office.

The Absolute Conservatives hate "illegal" immigration, which is ironic and humorous in that the warm, albeit illegal, brown bodies serve their agenda of corporations über alles.

The Absolute Conservatives comprise a sizable portion of the twenty-eight percent who continue to sit around the dwindling fires of the Bush camp...not a group that you would want to alienate if you were rocketing downward as the worst president ever.

Daddy and Barbara Bush have their "little brown ones" who were conceived of mostly White and mostly Brown parentage. Dubya has his "little brown ones" that emerge from his ass.

just came back to say thanks to Shells :)

missing sam in MM...

just join Nova M's founders club or whatever they call it, and podcast the show... sans comercials!!!

We should continue to support Sam to go for Nova M and to set up

I second the motion!

Sam on MM via iTunes

Mike Malloy is free on iTunes. That's how I got to listen to the show from last night!

btw, regarding supporting Sam on Nova M, I'd say it all depends on what Sam wants and where he wants to be in his own career. (Also it depends on when his current contract expires.)

Additionally, having your own studio is mucho expensivo to set up - even nowadays with all the techie advances. Rachel Maddow was looking forward to the time when she could do an occasional show from her kitchen until she found out she lived in a neighborhood that was last on the list for the technology necessary.

Malloy on iTunes

I couldn't find him there.

AAR Sucks!!!

AAR has castrated their lineup. I miss Sam on weekdays, and I have to tune in to Internet AAR to pick up Thom Hartmann. What in the h*ll is AAR doing?

Sammy! I missed you so

Sammy! I missed you so much, and loved hearing you on Malloy! Can't we organize a fund drive to get you on at NovaM? Why the hell can't they get 5,000 founders?
What's going on???

Your voice is a delight and I'm just going to enjoy hearing you today, on your 66% debut. WTF?

I've got one more day on this AAR membership and the investment in tequila is sure looking more entertaining.

Idiots!

Not on WWRL in New York?

I thought that the new "Sammy" show would be on in the AA home city, NYC, but it seems WWRL is still more interested in running fish oil infomercials than substance. What it is with that station?? ... the same one that pulled the plug on you when you cited a negative third party comment about Armstrong Williams from their AM show.

If you want Malloy on your iTunes...

Go to the Nova M website. They give you a number of playback choices to listen live, one is mp3. When you select it, you can call up iTunes as your mp3 player. Once you get it, Nova M stays on your list (although under music, not under radio) and you can go there forever.

Under The LobsterScope

Answer: Ask Mark Green...

... Mark Green is the "commander guy" -- the "decider" -- at AAR now. Sam should have remained where he was, and Lionel should have stayed where HE was. But we don't make the decisions.

AAR lost this Mon-Fri morning listener. For now. If more people go away, AAR will get the message.

A solution.....

If you could come up with $10 per month and subscribe to Nova M Radio's "Founders' Club", you could get the
podcast of Malloy's show with Seder. You probably know that...... BTW - they had a great time together and Sam
was on for quite some time.
