USLAW Leadership Urges Labor Turnoutto Demand End to Occupation in Iraq, Hands Off Iraqi Oil

By a referendum ballot of members of the Steering Committee of U.S. Labor Against the War, USLAW is now officially on record endorsing and encouraging participation in the antiwar demonstration called by the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition in Washington, DC on September 15.  The demonstration is timed to coincide with a Congressional vote scheduled in late September on a new Defense Department appropriation that will fund the Iraq War through the end of Bush's term in office.

Massive construction on I-5 during Hempfest weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation is planning major construction on I-5 during August. It will cause massive trouble and drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly.

WSDOT has some recommendations on dealing with this royal pain in the grass, and a lot of our fellow citizens have shared recommendations on the WSDOT blog.

Vendors and others coming from the south might do well to take Highway 99. From the 405 interchange, follow the signs west to SeaTac. Don't exit for SeaTac, stay on SR-518 until it meets SR-509. Follow the signs north to Seattle, SR-509 becomes SR-99. You'll drive along most of downtown and catch the "poor man's view" of the waterfront before exiting onto Western. Find parking and follow all the people.

Elvis Lives!

in our memories...

"Shawn Klush, a Pittston, Pennsylvania native, has been named the "ultimate Elvis tribute artist," in the first-ever tournament for Elvis impersonators sanctioned by Elvis Presley's estate.

Klush won over the sold-out crowd at a downtown Memphis concert hall with a version of Viva Las Vegas and then clinched the title against a field of nine other Elvis "tribute artists" with a rendition of You Gave Me A Mountain.

Clad in a replica of Presley's signature 1970s-era white jumpsuit, Klush bested two other veterans of the highly competitive Las Vegas Elvis circuit, Trent Carlini and Donny Edwards, who also made it to the final round.

Contestants were judged on performance, appearance and respect for Elvis by a panel of judges including Joe Moscheo, a singer who performed regularly with Presley in Las Vegas.

Klush's victory gives him $US5000 ($6303) in cash, a $5000 gift certificate to spend at Graceland and the marketing value of the first-ever endorsement from Presley's estate."

Hatching The Plot

by digby

When Karl resigned earlier this week, I mused that if he was about to go down, I thought it might be because of the most prosaic crime of all: violation of the Hatch act.

Here's more from McClatchy tonight on just what a slick political operation they had:
Top Commerce and Treasury Departments officials appeared with Republican candidates and doled out millions in federal money in battleground congressional districts and states after receiving White House political briefings detailing GOP election strategy.

Political appointees in the Treasury Department received at least 10 political briefings from July 2001 to August 2006, officials familiar with the meetings said. Their counterparts at the Commerce Department received at least four briefings — all in the election years of 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The first rule of hacking, after all, is “Don’t get caught.” And Fox newsman Darrell Phillipsmay have broken that rule, says Drew Curtis. Why A Duck?

All my family on my Mom's side, with the exception of an Aunt and Uncle that live in Den Hague, (if there's ever a trial I'll be sure to crash at their place, 'cause I wants me a front row seat), lived in East Germany from the time The Berlin Wall went up, because, like, they couldn't go out, and so it was on us to go visit them.

One year I smuggled Marx into the country.

Harpo, Chico, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo, via Richard Anobile's book, Why A Duck.

As you can imagine, this was strictly verboten, but I guess the guards didn't think a tow haired, blue eyed kid such as myself would try to pull a fast one like that.

A few years later, my younger brother tried to bring in a copy of Das Kapital, in the original Deutsch, and not only did they take it from him, he got a pretty stern talking to as well.

Go figure.

Politics

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is Politics?"

Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I am the head of the family, so call me The President.

Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her The Government.

We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you The People.

The nanny, we will consider her The Working Class.

And your baby brother, we will call him The Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense.

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother sound asleep.

Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.
The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now,"

The father says, "Great son! Tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about."

The little boy replies, "The President is screwing The Working Class while The Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and The Future is in deep shit."

The Bet

An elderly woman walked into the Bank of Canada one morning with a purse full of money. She wanted to open a savings account and insisted on talking to the president of the Bank because, she said, she had a lot of money.

After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderly woman to the president's office.

The president of the Bank asked her how much she wanted to deposit. She placed her purse on his desk and replied, "$165,000".

The president was curious and asked her how she had been able to save so much money. The elderly woman replied that she made bets.

The president was surprised and asked, "What kind of bets?"
The elderly woman replied, "Well, I bet you $25,000 that your testicles are square."

The president started to laugh and told the woman that it was impossible to win a bet like that.

The woman never batted an eye. She just looked at the president and said, "Would you like to take my bet?"

"Certainly", replied the president. "I bet you $25,000 that my testicles are not square."

"Done", the elderly woman answered. "But given the amount of money involved, if you don't mind I would like to come back at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning with my lawyer as a witness."

"No problem", said the president of the Bank confidently.

That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of the mirror examining his testicles, turning them this way and that, checking them over again and again until he was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself that there was no way he could lose the bet.

The next morning at exactly 10 o'clock the elderly woman arrived at the president's office with her lawyer and acknowledged the $25,000 bet made the day before that the president's testicles were square.

The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before. Then the elderly woman asked him to drop his pants so that she and her lawyer could see clearly.
The president was happy to oblige.

The elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touch them. "Of course", said the president. "Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100% sure."

The elderly woman did so with a little smile.

Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer was banging his head against the wall.

He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that and she replied, "Oh, it's probably because I bet him $100,000 that around 10 o'clock in the morning I would be holding the balls of the President of the Bank of Canada!"

Guns For Hire: Secrecy, Torture, Religious Zeal Distinguish Mercenaries

The West Virginia Gazette

Iraq and Afghanistan dominated our news headlines. But our media continue to overlook the growing privatization of military operations - a major historical development.

George W. Bush vigorously backs privatization and frequently awards huge contracts to companies owned by political contributors, such as Halliburton and Blackwater.

During his years in the Oval Office, Bill Clinton also embraced the emerging military privatization.

Today, our government pays mercenaries billions of dollars to fight and kill "enemies," protect government officials and deliver food.

American taxpayers pay the bill. But few know much about the growth of private military companies, or PMCs.

Two new books - Jeremy Scahill's Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army and Robert Young Pelton's Licensed to Kill: Hired Guns in the War on Terror - tell that story.

Hundreds of companies, most formed recently, rake in billions of dollars to provide mercenaries for operations, often top-secret, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, to name a few.

"Private forces are almost a necessity for a United States bent on retaining its declining empire," Scahill writes. "Think about Rome and its increasing need for mercenaries."

Our government, Pelton believes, is creating a "freelance warrior class that operates under murky legal restraints.".......

Sesktak Warns Iraqi Oil Law Contains ‘Undue Ability Of U.S. Oil Companies To Control Iraqi Profits’ »
Alternet’s Joshua Holland reported recently, “If passed, the Bush administration’s long-sought ‘hydrocarbons framework’ law would give Big Oil access to Iraq’s vast energy reserves on the most advantageous terms and with virtually no regulation.” The framework law proposes to hand over effective control of as much as 80 percent of the country’s oil wealth.

A recent poll showed that all Iraqi ethnic and sectarian groups across the political spectrum oppose the principles enshrined in the oil law, and 419 Iraqi oil experts, economists and intellectuals recently signed their names to a statement expressing grave concern over the bill. The head of the Iraqi Federation of Union Councils said recently, “If the Iraqi Parliament approves this law, we will resort to mutiny.”

While the Bush administration has prodded the Iraqi government to pass the oil-sharing agreement, few members of Congress have voiced alarms over the details in the current bill. Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) recently told ThinkProgress that more attention needs to be paid to the oil legislation. “Who knows what’s in that,” he said. Sestak continued:

The indications from a draft of several months ago that the Kurds were using, is that…there is an undue ability of our oil companies to control the Iraqi profits by controlling the infrastructure and the wells that are there.

I mean they [U.S. oil companies] are going to get much more, if the draft is correct, of profits than we would under a normal oil sharing agreement, of these oil companies to a country like Saudi Arabia or others. Heaven forbid that at the end of this time, after all this, if we find out that there’s undue advantage given to our oil companies.

Watch it:

In the interview, Sestak also distanced himself from the opinions of Michael O’Hanlon and Ken Pollack. “Even though I have great respect for Michael O’Hanlon and Ken Pollack and their article in the New York Times, I disagree,” said Sestak. He said the security improvements that are being made in Anbar actually pre-date the escalation. Moreover, he argued these improvements in one part of the country don’t mean much if political success can’t follow:

The political situation is the absolute end game. Because even though you might be able to have an improvement in the military security, how long do we have to be there to change the minds, to the change the hearts of the Iraqis?

Effecting bibimimi's Affectations

Where's bibimimi when I need her?

I'm going over a book transcript. If it was any drier it would have a glorious future as a desiccant.

Anyway, the author used the verb "affect" followed by two direct-object phrases joined by a conjunction. The first phrase wants a verb that says "to influence" and the second phrase wants a verb that says "to bring about or execute".

My margin notes are lengthy enough to be another book. My final comment on affect/effect says, "Not to worry. Few people know the distinction and those who do are as confused as I am."

What I really need is a rubber stamp that outlines a pointing fist in which are the words, "Rewrite this crappy sentence."

Wiretapping Was Only The

Wiretapping Was Only The Beginning

New Law Allows Body Searches, Collection Of Business Records Without Court Approval

Concern Over Wider Spying Under New Law
By JAMES RISEN and ERIC LICHTBLAU
WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 — Broad new surveillance powers approved by Congress this month could allow the Bush administration to conduct spy operations that go well beyond wiretapping to include — without court approval — certain types of physical searches of American citizens and the collection of their business records, Democratic Congressional officials and other experts said.

Administration officials acknowledged that they had heard such concerns from Democrats in Congress recently, and that there was a continuing debate over the meaning of the legislative language. But they said the Democrats were simply raising theoretical questions based on a harsh interpretation of the legislation.

They also emphasized that there would be strict rules in place to minimize the extent to which Americans would be caught up in the surveillance.

The dispute illustrates how lawmakers, in a frenetic, end-of-session scramble, passed legislation they may not have fully understood and may have given the administration more surveillance powers than it sought. It also offers a case study in how changing a few words in a complex piece of legislation has the potential to fundamentally alter the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a landmark national security law. Two weeks after the legislation was signed into law, there is still heated debate over how much power Congress gave to the president.

“This may give the administration even more authority than people thought,” said David Kris, a former senior Justice Department lawyer in the Bush and Clinton administrations and a co-author of “National Security Investigation and Prosecutions,” a new book on surveillance law.

Several legal experts said that by redefining the meaning of “electronic surveillance,” the new law narrows the types of communications covered in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, by indirectly giving the government the power to use intelligence collection methods far beyond wiretapping that previously required court approval if conducted inside the United States.

These new powers include the collection of business records, physical searches and so-called “trap and trace” operations, analyzing specific calling patterns.

For instance, the legislation would allow the government, under certain circumstances, to demand the business records of an American in Chicago without a warrant if it asserts that the search concerns its surveillance of a person who is in Paris, experts said.

You been out campin' in the northwoods, Jim? Scanned the blog since I been gone ('bouta week or so) 'n seems I seen that somewheres. You getta magnificent Perseid show, did you?

For all me, was on the S'wannee R. in Fla. here recent (prehistoric sturgeons was jumpin' 'n [natural] -- don't go gutter on me now -- springs was pumpin'; snorkeled Manatee 'n Fanning Springs on the S'wannee ('n stopped off atta glorious rope-swing on the Withlacoochee), 'n later we'all splooshed about in Hart 'n Blue Springs, too, 'n seen but didn't swim in Devil's Den).

Anyways, on point, while perched onna houseboat on the S'wannee, seena solitary meteor burst acrost the sky that were like a sky-long burnt-orange blaze.

Kept expectin' it to end and it never quite did till it hit the horizon-line.

Hmmm

Dear Anon, CM, Anonymous, or whatever it is u call yirself, you POS, spineless,yellow-bellied, if you believe in all this so much, then what r u doing here, posting gibberish, instead of fightin' 'em there, in Iraq, u Coward,

Do you really want to get into a battle of nitwits here?

If so, then what's the point you're trying to make?

I know that we're lower forms of life and all, in your eyes, and that's fine, we're used to it.

But if you want to get into the game of incessantly posting unflattering pictures, don't get your panties, (that your Momma washes for you, thus disturbing your routine in the basement you live in), in a bunch when you're returned in kind.

Sound reasonable, Sport?

But if you wanna keep coming back, suit yourself, but don't be acting all surprised when clips like the above start appearing on the 700 Klub, or at your friendly, local, mega-church, for a month of Sundaes.

Under Fire At Home, House Dems Give Idiotic Excuses for Not

Impeaching Bush.

By Bob Fertik, www.Democrats.com
Freshman Joe Sestak (D-PA) had a town meeting to talk about Iraq, but his constituents wanted to talk about something else.

When he turned the microphone over to the public, though, the discussion quickly turned into a heated debate about impeaching George W. Bush.Room 101 of Swarthmore College’s Science Center was filled to capacity with citizens who demanded Congress begin an impeachment process.“I don’t think I would feel more comfortable with (Dick) Cheney as president,” said Sestak. “Congress cannot even get stem cell research without a veto. Does anybody honestly think we could get an impeachment?”The crowd shouted back a resounding, “YES.”

Right on!!It's outrageous that Sestak is trotting out the tired old "President Cheney" argument when the only impeachment bill in Congress, H.Res. 333, calls for impeaching Cheney first. If Sestak doesn't want "President Cheney," why doesn't he co-sponsor the bill? And as for the veto argument, doesn't Sestak know the President can't veto impeachment?Meanwhile on the opposite coast, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) also confronted by constituents demanding impeachment.

Company Selling Cell Phone Numbers

For years, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking victims could keep out of the phone book by using a cell phone.

But now, for a small fee, those private numbers are available online thanks to one company. The Internet firm Intelius is selling mobile phone numbers and sometimes home addresses for $7 to $15 each.

Intelius already has 90 million numbers and will add another 70 million by the end of the week.

Victims of domestic abuse, stalking and sexual assault said it's a dangerous service. For years, they have been able to keep out of the phone book and use a cell to stay away from abusers.

Rethinking the Development

Rethinking the Development of Latin America and the Caribbean for the 21st Century

The imperial system has four inter-related levels of exploitation. On the bottom tier the new imperial architecture rests on foundations of labor power, productive resources exploited and extracted from Latin America, Asia and Africa. At the next level, manufacturers and agro-mineral capitalists extract profits from the exploitation of labor and natural resources. At the third tier, real estate, commercial, banking and IT capitalists extract interests, rents and royalties. At the top of the imperial pyramid are the investment, pension, hedge and derivative funds, which profit from buying and selling, merging and acquiring multinational corporations and speculate in the speculators paper value. The four-tiered hierarchy defines the architecture of contemporary Latin American development in the 21st century.

At each level the value produced at the lower levels is transferred to a higher level leading to an inverted pyramid of wealth: the top .01% of the super rich own more assets than the bottom 50%. To speak of the ‘capitalist class’ without clarifying its location in the imperial architecture is to obfuscate the new configuration of imperial power.

A Review of Henry Giroux’s

A Review of Henry Giroux’s The University in Chains: Confronting the Military-Industrial-Academic Complex
The University in Chains, is an intellectually rigorous and politically challenging contribution to our understanding of US culture, US politics and US education in our increasingly (and dangerously) militarized society and world, and a careful examination of the ways in which the capitalist market, the Pentagon-system, and right-wing fundamentalism corrupt and condition the academy and culture. The University in Chains is a stunning tour-de-force that meticulously examines how the multi-tiered and interpenetrating military, corporate and right-wing assaults on the university undermine higher education as a potentially and necessary democratic public sphere in which students and teachers could, and should, develop a sense of individual and social agency in the context of experiencing meaningful democratic social relations while identifying, critiquing and working to overcome authoritarian forms of power and authority.

Giroux writes with a clarity and urgency that is riveting and engaging. He operates from a fundamental recognition, “the academy and democracy are in peril,” and from a decisive question, “What is the task of educators at a time when the forces of democracy appear to be in retreat and the emerging ideologies and practices of militarization, corporatism, and political fundamentalism bear down on every aspect of individual and collective experience?”

You have no idea how fucking slow this thing is.

Hey Alice, Kevin.

20th Century Gnostic Visionary

William S. Burroughs
...
With the analytical eye of a surgeon (Burroughs studied medicine at Harvard, specialised knowledge that would eventually serve him well in his novels), Burroughs performed an autopsy on the body politic in a multitude of bleak and humorous novels, foremost among them Junky (1953), Naked Lunch (1959), The Soft Machine (1961), Nova Express (1964), and The Place of Dead Roads (1983).

But Burroughs never limited his vision to merely charting out the intricate connections that make up the system of control. Like Huxley before him, who eventually followed his dystopian novel Brave New World with a Utopian counterpoint titled The Island, Burroughs himself attempted to construct his own vision of a Utopia in such novels as The Wild Boys (1971) and Cities of the Red Night (1981).

In both cases, Burroughs seemed to suggest that a Utopia was not possible except within an isolated oasis, what Hakim Bey would call “a temporary autonomous zone.” 2 In the first case, the autonomous zone takes the form of an all-male enclave in the jungles of North Africa; these commandos, trained in combat for defensive purposes, can reproduce without the aid of women and travel through the trees on prehensile hemorrhoids. In Cities of the Red Night, Burroughs’s Utopia is based on historical fact and manifests as an island settlement established by Captain Mission, an actual pirate who lived in the eighteenth century.

C&L’s Late Nite Music Club with Max Roach RIP
By: John Amato on Friday, August 17th, 2007 at 8:01 PM - PDT (Blogged by Howie Klein) Last night I asked legendary drummer Jim Keltner, my neighbor, for his reaction to the news of Max Roach’s passing. Jim hadn’t heard yet and was too shocked to answer immediately. Later he e-mailed me a calm assessment: “Not only was Max with Bird and Diz at the birth of BeBop, he soon became the link between the great swing drummers and the exciting precision based bombast of early BeBop. Max was one of the most important and influential Jazz drummers of all time.” The NY Times was as impressed with Roach as Keltner was, saying he “rewrote the rules of drumming in the 1940’s and spent the rest of his career breaking musical barriers and defying listeners’ expectations.” As a teenager he worked with Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington, went on to work with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, and Anthony Braxton to name a few.

Here’s a piece by the Max Roach Quartet (with Billy Harper, Cecil Bridgewater, and Reggie Workman) in the mid-70’s

From Think Tanks to Battle Tanks

"The Quest to Impose a Single World Market Has Casualties Now in the Millions"

by Naomi Klein

...
We who say we believe in this other world need to know that we are not losers. We did not lose the battle of ideas. We were not outsmarted, and we were not out-argued. We lost because we were crushed. Sometimes we were crushed by army tanks, and sometimes we were crushed by think tanks. And by think tanks, I mean the people who are paid to think by the makers of tanks. Now, most effective we have seen is when the army tanks and the think tanks team up. The quest to impose a single world market has casualties now in the millions, from Chile then to Iraq today. These blueprints for another world were crushed and disappeared because they are popular and because, when tried, they work. They're popular because they have the power to give millions of people lives with dignity, with the basics guaranteed. They are dangerous because they put real limits on the rich, who respond accordingly. Understanding this history, understanding that we never lost the battle of ideas, that we only lost a series of dirty wars, is key to building the confidence that we lack, to igniting the passionate intensity that we need.

The only thing being destroyed is the credibility of the GW crowd!

CIA, FBI computers used for Wikipedia edits

Re-writing history?Yea,we can trust these guys with little,or no oversite!
By Randall Mikkelsen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program.

The changes may violate Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said on Thursday.

The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches.

The program allows users to track the source of computers used to make changes to the popular Internet encyclopedia where anyone can submit and edit entries.

WikiScanner revealed that CIA computers were used to edit an entry on the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. A graphic on casualties was edited to add that many figures were estimated and were not broken down by class.

Global Warming

The two things that unite the people of the world in fear because they are "transnational" concerns, in other words they are a concern for everyone in the world, are terrorism and global warming. How convenient for the people who want the New World Order. The reason Gore and even Bush (?!) are pushing green fuels and environmental living so much (without following the advice themselves, see Gore:politicsandpigskins.blogspot.com/2...l) is because they are pushing the agenda of the dark lords that control politics and finance in the world today. When we know this all of a sudden things start to make sense. Live Earth annyone? This was done on 7/7/7, a huge number for the Illuminati.

I realise I am preaching to the choir here and you already know that 2/3ds of the greenhouse gases produced are completely natural and not from humans. I am sure you already know about the dirty little secret involving Hybrid cars (they put out just as many greenhouse gases, just in the production cycle instead of from the car), and ethanol (there is too much corn being grown in the U.S. which is why they pushed this, Brazil had much better alternative fuels like biodiesel at the pump ten years ago and is now developing alternative fuel using other plants). But this beggs the question: WHY. Why the lie? When the New World Order is at stake, it all starts to make a little bit more sense.

Alarmist global warming claims melt under scientific scrutiny

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims

Inconvenient FACTS

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

One More Gore Lie

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.

Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

Scientist: Models used to analyse climate change are incoherent

Scientists might not have human behavior to blame for global warming, according to the president of the World Federation of Scientists.

Antonio Zichichi, who is also a retired professor of advanced physics at the University of Bologna, made this assertion today in an address delivered to an international congress sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

The conference, which ends today, is examining "Climate Change and Development."

Zichichi pointed out that human activity has less than a 10% impact on the environment.

He also cited that models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are incoherent and invalid from a scientific point of view. The U.N. commission was founded in 1988 to evaluate the risk of climate change brought on by humans

Scientific opinion on climate change
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
National and international science academies and professional societies have assessed the current scientific opinion on climate change, in particular recent global warming. These assessments have largely followed or endorsed the IPCC position that "An increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system... There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities".[1]

This page documents scientific opinion as given by synthesis reports, scientific bodies of national or international standing, and surveys of opinion among climate scientists. It does not document the views of individual scientists or self-selected lists of individuals such as petitions.

Storm guru: Oceans, not CO2, cause warming

Challenging the climate science community, noted hurricane forecaster William Gray said that global ocean currents, not human-produced carbon dioxide, are responsible for global warming, and the Earth may begin to cool on its own in five to 10 years.

He said that over the past 40 years the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the Atlantic coast has declined compared with the previous 40 years, even though carbon dioxide levels have risen.

Global Warming Skeptic Challenges Gore to Debate

A British skeptic of global warming "alarmism" on Tuesday challenged climate change activist and former Vice President Al Gore to a debate on the issue.

"Al Gore has become the world's most recognized advocate of the theory that human greenhouse gas emissions are altering the world's climate and could cause catastrophic damage if not arrested and reduced," Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast said in a statement. "But Al Gore refuses to debate those who say global warming is not a crisis."

Global warming hits Mars too: study

Global warming could be heating Mars four times faster than Earth due to a mutually reinforcing interplay of wind-swept dust and changes in reflected heat from the Sun, according to a study released Wednesday.

The study, published on Thursday by the British journal Nature, shows for the first time that these variations not only result from the storms but help cause them too.

It also suggests that short-term climate change is currently occurring on Mars and at a much faster rate than on Earth.

A Skeptic's Guide To Debunking Global Warming Alarmism

Since 1895, the media has alternated between global cooling and warming scares during four separate and sometimes overlapping time periods. From 1895 until the 1930's the media peddled a coming ice age. From the late 1920's until the 1960's they warned of global warming. From the 1950's until the 1970's they warned us again of a coming ice age. This makes modern global warming the fourth estate's fourth attempt to promote opposing climate change fears during the last 100 years.

Global Hoax

The National Academy of Sciences report reaffirmed the existence of the Medieval Warm Period from about 900 AD to 1300 AD and the Little Ice Age from about 1500 to 1850. Both of these periods occurred long before the invention of the SUV or human industrial activity could have possibly impacted the Earth's climate. In fact, scientists believe the Earth was warmer than today during the Medieval Warm Period, when the Vikings grew crops in Greenland.

cm

LOL..too easy

What the climate alarmists and their advocates in the media have continued to ignore is the fact that the Little Ice Age, which resulted in harsh winters which froze New York Harbor and caused untold deaths, ended about 1850. So trying to prove man-made global warming by comparing the well-known fact that today's temperatures are warmer than during the Little Ice Age is akin to comparing summer to winter to show a catastrophic temperature trend.

Kyoto

A letter sent to the Canadian Prime Minister on April 6, 2006 by 60 prominent scientists who question the basis for climate alarmism, clearly explains the current state of scientific knowledge on global warming. The 60 scientists wrote: "If, back in the mid-1990s, we knew what we know today about climate, Kyoto would almost certainly not exist, because we would have concluded it was not necessary." The letter also noted: "‘Climate change is real' is a meaningless phrase used repeatedly by activists to convince the public that a climate catastrophe is looming and humanity is the cause. Neither of these fears is justified. Global climate changes occur all the time due to natural causes and the human impact still remains impossible to distinguish from this natural ‘noise."

Global Warming

On February 19, 2006, CBS News's "60 Minutes" produced a segment on the North Pole. The segment was a completely one-sided report, alleging rapid and unprecedented melting at the polar cap. It even featured correspondent Scott Pelley claiming that the ice in Greenland was melting so fast, that he barely got off an ice-berg before it collapsed into the water. "60 Minutes" failed to inform its viewers that a 2005 study by a scientist named Ola Johannessen and his colleagues showing that the interior of Greenland is gaining ice and mass and that according to scientists, the Arctic was warmer in the 1930's than today.

Rove On Whether He’ll

Rove On Whether He’ll Answer Questions About His Potentially Illegal Acts: ‘Nice Try’
On the Sunday shows this morning, Karl Rove was treated largely with kid gloves by the hosts and was not forced to confront many difficult questions about his ethical improprieties while serving in the White House.

In three Sunday show appearances, he was not asked once about his efforts to politicize the federal government, despite the fact that a front-page article appeared on that very subject this morning in the Washington Post. Rove was also not asked about his role in selling the war prior to the invasion. Nor was he asked about his connections to Jack Abramoff, his use of non-White House email accounts, or his stewardship over the Katrina reconstruction efforts.

On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace attempted to press Rove on two troubling aspects of Rove’s record: his outing of Valerie Plame and his efforts to dismiss U.S. attorneys who refused to comply with the White House’s political orders. When Wallace tried to press for answers on these issues, Rove repeatedly answered, “Nice try”:

WALLACE: Why did you push to fire some U.S. attorneys in the president’s second term?

ROVE: Nice try.

[…]

WALLACE: What do you think of Joe Wilson?

ROVE: I’m not going to comment. Nice try.

[…]

WALLACE: When was the first time you told the president [about leaking Plame’s identity]?

ROVE: I’m not going to — again, nice try.

Watch a compilation:

Unable to generate substantive answers to legitimate questions, Wallace backed off and moved to other questions.

At the conclusion of the interview, Rove acknowledged that his unwillingness to be candid would intensify congressional pressure on him. “Let’s face it. I mean, I’m a myth, and they’re — you know, I’m Beowulf. You know, I’m Grendel. I don’t know who I am. But they’re after me,” Rove said.

WALLACE: The Constitution does not prevent you from speaking to me so, in fact, I’ll ask you some questions.

Why did you push to fire some U.S. attorneys in the president’s second term?

ROVE: Nice try. You — the president has prerogatives that stand up not only to Congress, but also to you.

WALLACE: Well, I’m simply asking you what you did.

ROVE: And what I advised the president is protected by that prerogative. Nice try, Chris.

[…]

WALLACE: What do you think of Joe Wilson?

ROVE: I’m not going to comment. Nice try.

WALLACE: Finally…

ROVE: What do you think about Mr. Wilson?

WALLACE: Nice try.

[…]

WALLACE: When was the first time you told the president?

ROVE: I’m not going to — again, nice try. I’ve said I’m not going to — there is a civil lawsuit. I’m not going to expand the public record.

the Scissor Sisters

they're from NYC but they're HUGE in the UK. They're a gay-glam-disco-BeeGees-party band.

They used this song on a Dr Who that hasn't been show here yet, and some kid made a well-coordinated vid with it. Again, I am opting to entertain myself.

I played that song for D. after I accidentally pulled up a c&L vid of Celine Dion singing "You Shook Me All Night Long" [christ!]. A palate cleanser!

You don't seem to understand that it is you freepers that are so obsessed with Clinton. Clinton's not that important to me. You are the one comparing Clinton and Bush. Clinton did it!! So that means Bush can do it but Bushco pushes the envelope too far.

Just live with it, Bush is a screw up. Always has been. And people are now seeing him for what he is.

I'd like to see the Clintons and the Bushes disappear altogether.

Censorship - Mervgate

Pam Spaulding: Yesterday the editors at the Hollywood Reporter spent a lot of energy fretting over a piece about Merv Griffin by Ray Richmond that confirmed the impresario was gay -- as Richmond worked with the man and it was common knowledge. This obviously raised the ire of industry heavy hitters (and likely advertisers, which would scare any publication) and the Hollywood Reporter pulled the piece, without explanation, and it disappeared from Richmond's site.

Reuters, by the way, ran it as well, but it was also pressured, later adding a disclaimer tag to the story: "This was a story from The Hollywood Reporter that ran as part of a Reuters news feed. We have dropped the story from our entertainment news feed as it did not meet our standards for news. GBU Editor"

What standard for news did Richmond's piece not meet? Someone at Reuters had already given it the thumbs up, so it must have passed those heralded standards before the irate calls came. That's scandalous on its own. The article later reappeared later the same day, again without explanation on both the Reporter site and at Richmond's blog (which is owned by the Hollywood Reporter).

Bad case of it!

The War as We Saw It

VIEWED from Iraq at the tail end of a 15-month deployment, the political debate in Washington is indeed surreal. Counterinsurgency is, by definition, a competition between insurgents and counterinsurgents for the control and support of a population. To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched. As responsible infantrymen and noncommissioned officers with the 82nd Airborne Division soon heading back home, we are skeptical of recent press coverage portraying the conflict as increasingly manageable and feel it has neglected the mounting civil, political and social unrest we see every day. (Obviously, these are our personal views and should not be seen as official within our chain of command.)

The claim that we are increasingly in control of the battlefields in Iraq is an assessment arrived at through a flawed, American-centered framework. Yes, we are militarily superior, but our successes are offset by failures elsewhere. What soldiers call the “battle space” remains the same, with changes only at the margins. It is crowded with actors who do not fit neatly into boxes: Sunni extremists, Al Qaeda terrorists, Shiite militiamen, criminals and armed tribes. This situation is made more complex by the questionable loyalties and Janus-faced role of the Iraqi police and Iraqi Army, which have been trained and armed at United States taxpayers’ expense.

A few nights ago, for example, we witnessed the death of one American soldier and the critical wounding of two others when a lethal armor-piercing explosive was detonated between an Iraqi Army checkpoint and a police one. Local Iraqis readily testified to American investigators that Iraqi police and Army officers escorted the triggermen and helped plant the bomb. These civilians highlighted their own predicament: had they informed the Americans of the bomb before the incident, the Iraqi Army, the police or the local Shiite militia would have killed their families.

As many grunts will tell you, this is a near-routine event.

BETTMERALP, Switzerland - Hundreds of naked people formed a “living sculpture” on Switzerland’s Aletsch glacier Saturday, hoping to raise awareness about climate change.

The photo shoot by Spencer Tunick, the New York artist famous for his pictures of nude gatherings in public settings worldwide, was designed to draw attention to the effects of global warming on Switzerland’s shrinking glaciers.

“The melting of the glaciers is an indisputable sign of global climate change,” said the environmental group Greenpeace, which co-organized the event.

do my eyes deceive...a compliment in here...damn..watch the skies

CM

____________

I expect folks ain't been remiss to hand outta a compliment to you b/c they're stingy, CM.

It's more on account of you seldom say anything that ain't just been salvaged outta the rancid vats of ditto-head septic tanks.

Or it might could be b/c you take a sadist's delight in irritating folks w/the sophist's bad-faith sport of setting up and knocking down pathetic straw-men arguments and then rustling yer pom-poms 'n declaring, "Oh, my, what a clever boy am I! Liberals suck! Conservatives rule! Yay! Goooo team!"

It's a tired, mean-spirited, deceitful shtick that any of us can get any day of the week from Rush "the Oxycontin Kid" Limbaugh or Sean "Who Knew Jughead Hadda Evil Twin?" Hannity or Bill "Feel My Falafel of Love!" O'Reilly or Michael "Yeah, So I'ma Closet Wiener, So What!" Savage.

The iron law of movement-conservative barratry: reactionary sophistry is the very flotsom and jetsam upon which rats and their assorted parasites cling to when they abandon a transparently sinking ship.

Liberal smoking bans? The menace of global warming? That's the best you can do, CM? In our times? In these times? Methinks the movement-conservative doth protest too much.

Reflexive pearl-clutching over the unspeakable horrors of the liberal nanny-state while gamely ignoring actual authoritarian measures like government-sanctioned torture, the abdication of the 4th amendment, the on-going illegal NSA wire-tapping, and the hijacking of the U.S. military (and Constitution) against the will of the people and then daring -- fucking daring -- the Congress to call the executive's bluff by declaring a Constitutional crisis that somehow (gasp!) doesn't involve a blowjob, well, nothing short of impeachment would even begin to placate you, CM, if a Democrat had done any -- a.n.y. -- of the things that Bush has done. 'Fact, right now, this very moment, CM, if a Dem had done any of what Bush has done, you'd be shrieking from the treetops like a howler monkey (hypocritically, 'course, but rightly, for a blessed change) about how a "lawless authoritarian rogue presidency" is undermining our basic American freedoms and liberties and values and must be stopped.

But b/c Bush calls himself a "conservative", and b/c you identify yourself as what Bush calls himself, and b/c the toadies who follow Bush call themselves "conservative", and b/c you respect these toadies, you check your conscience at the door and willfully ignore the (transparent, on-going, unremitting) travesties of (movement-conservative) governance, travesties that you would not fucking dream of remaining silent about if those measures were initiated, much less enacted, by anyone but "one of your own".

I call bullshit, CM.

Specifically, I call reflexive, ditto-head, party-over-country, tribalistic bullshit.

Here's a deductive exercise for you, CM. Do you expect our boy-king to reign forever? Is it possible ("gasp! noooooo!") a Democrat could win the White House next cycle?

Maybe you oughtta think about how awful your life will be if ("horrors!") Hillary inherits the "unitary powers" that Cheney/Bush seek to establish and make precendentary.

(It's enough to make a reactionary hysteric like you join the local right-wing militia, I expect. Course, maybe the masochist in you would secretly delight in such a development. A valid reason to vilify Dems/liberals? What self-disrespecting movement-conservative wouldn't exult in that? After all, if it's bad for the country but CM still gets to deride liberals, then no matter the cost, it's all worth it, right?)

Jesu-Maria, but I am sick beyond belief of the shrieking harpies of the right who would never dream of allowing the offenses committed by the Bush administration to perpetuate and metasticize but for the embarrassing-but-true fact that Bush is (supposedly) "one of them". So it's all OK.

That says, forcefully, CM, that you are willing to allow the country to go to shit merely to assuage your wounded vanity. Evidently, you have that pathetically selfish distinction in common w/our pundit class.

But hey, go on beating the drum about Gore crying wolf! Beware the "scare-mongering of the liberal global-warming hoax"! (The new Green menace!)

Someone might actually ask us all to stop shitting in our collective beds, and Lord knows we wouldn't want that.

After all, that's just the way movement conservatives like it.

Pig, meet shit. Roll as desired.

TONID way too flattering

that rat rove picture is way too flattering for him - it's got a certain sexy languid look that makes me puke when associating with the bastard

Back from Alaska w/Randi

Hello Sederistas!!!!
I have missed you all.
I was in Minneapolis the day after the bridge collapse and got to see the tragedy up close and personal - horrible, just horrible.
Then I spent a week in San Fran - the ONLY place in the country that was NOT having a heatwave and saw the show Avenue Q - sesame street for grown ups - highly recommend you check out the webpage for the show and the lyrics to the songs.
And then I did go on the cruise to Alaska w/Randi. Turns out it was arranged by the San Diego affliate so was not a homebase AAR event. Cruise and Alaska was awesome. I ended up spend more time with Randi's "Bangle" Michael who is just the coolest and nicest person and "Dan" from Clear Channel who I told politely but directly @ how badly the NY station signal's sucked. Didn't go into the programming because he was afterall being quite a doll and he is not responsible for the programming, but he got the message about the advertisers not getting their money's worth and that they should do something to boost the power.

When I get my pics off my camera I am going to need help, but will put them up for everyone to see. I took a helicopter ride over @ 7 different glaciers and then landed at the summer camp for the Itiderod dog camp and took an amazing sled ride with them and then got to meet and play with the dogs both veterns of the race and new ones just starting training. They really do LOVE to run. It is amazing how much they love it and it was one of the most amazing experiences ever.

Fernando - Maybe - you can help me learn how to post the pics on my blog page?

So much happened while I was away, I am trying to get caught up altho I did catch the highlights and of course did podcast Sammy from each Sunday and TYT every couple of days.

Nice to see everyone and Happy Sederista Sunday ya bastards!!!!

Matt Cooper Says Rove DID

Matt Cooper Says Rove DID Leak Valerie Plame’s Identity To Him: UPDATED!
By: Logan Murphy @ 10:20 AM - PDT

Following Karl Rove’s appearance this morning on “Meet The Press” David Gregory (who is involved in the Plame scandal. More on that later.) held a round table discussion which included former Time Magazine reporter Matt Cooper. Cooper, who was dead center in the Valerie Plame scandal, stops just short of calling Karl Rove a liar, insisting that he did, in fact, leak Valerie Plame’s name to him in 2003.

Karl Rove’s denial from earlier in the program:

Download (150) | Play (154) Download (31) | Play (89)

Gregory: Matt Cooper, let’s pick up on an aspect of the interview with, with Karl Rove having to do with the leak case, the CIA leak case, that you were part of as well. And something’s that’s very interesting, he, he went out of his way to say, “I would not have been a confirming source on this kind of information” and taking issue with, with Novak’s testimony in his column that he knew who Valerie Plame was. He said he would never confirm that information. That’s different from your experience with him.

Cooper: Yeah, I, I think he was dissembling, to put it charitably. Look, Karl Rove told me about Valerie Plame’s identity on July 11th, 2003. I called him because Ambassador Wilson was in the news that week. I didn’t know Ambassador Wilson even had a wife until I talked to Karl Rove and he said that she worked at the agency and she worked on WMD. I mean, to imply that he didn’t know about it or that this was all the leak…

Gregory: Or that he had heard it from somebody else…

Cooper: …by someone else, or he heard it as some rumor out in the hallway is, is nonsense.

Gregory: But he makes no apologies to Valerie Plame.

Cooper: Karl Rove never apologizes. That’s not what he does..

John Amato: Cooper calls Rove a liar, plain and simple—in a dissembling way of course…

Think Progress has Rove on FOX propaganda….

Karl Rove Spins His Way Out

Karl Rove Spins His Way Out Of Town On Meet The Press
By: Logan Murphy @ 7:45 AM - PDT This morning on “Meet The Press” Karl Rove sat down with David Gregory to talk about his career, Iraq and the state of the Republican party today. Gregory actually asks some tough questions and follows up on them, but the Master of Spin refuses to answer most of the questions directly and as expected, attempts to rewrite history and put a positive face on his scorched earth brand of politics and the worst president in American history.

Part I Download (1054) | Play (1225) Download (480) | Play (706)

Part II Download (748) | Play (564) Download (161) | Play (316)

Rove bashes Hillary Clinton and Joe Wilson, throws Richard Armitage under the bus, defends the recently unearthed video of Dick Cheney (what’s changed? Why 9/11 of course!) and refuses to take responsibility for his role in the failures of the Bush administration and the catastrophic damage he’s done to the Republican party. There’s a lot of garbage to sort through, have at it in the comments…

IMPEACHMENT submitted by: Dark Lady

I find it impossible to support anyone who is not calling for impeachment of Cheney and Bush. Anyone who votes for the continued funding of the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq is a traitor to his or her country; and, anyone in leadership who takes impeachment off the table is an accomplice in the continued murder of American Troops and innocent Iraqi men, women and children.
I will do whatever I can to support Cindy Sheehan in her efforts to unseat Nance Pelosi; and, any real Dem. who will take on Harry Reid will have more support than they might imagine. People are sick of the fence-sitting, play it safe crowd! No longer can their lame excuses be allowed to placate us. Words should mean something: If they are LEADERS, WHY DON'T THEY LEAD?! If they remain cowards Reid and Pelosi should step aside and let someone with guts actually do what they are too timid to do!

SJ - More info on the Sled dogs as requested

SJ - Thanks for the warm welcome back! Sorry to read that your RA is flaring on ya. Please take good gentle care of yourself and try not to overdo things. I have fibro so I can relate. I had to remember to pace myself on my trip because thankfully the weather was beautiful and I was feeling really good. We only had one bad weather day of rain, and I did really get hit with the barometric pressure drop from it as we also dropped in latitude at the same time. Was like being hit by a Mac truck, but luckily only for one day and I was able to get into the on-board spa for a massage. I find that massage helps me a great deal on a regular basis and heat helps on those Mac truck days.

Now, to the sled dogs.
Fun fact - Itiderod dogs are a seperate breed from what we picture them to be. The image of the blue eyed grey and white siberian husky or the all white snowy dogs that we typically see in the movies are not what the reality is. The dogs are actually a mixed breed bred based on their characteristics and abilities in relation to the race and environment and are called Alaskan husky. They come in all colors and sizes. I did meet some with those amazingly blue on blue eyes, and some that looked like a mix of german shepard and husky and much larger than you would imagine. Also interesting, the team of dogs in the sled I rode in was lead by true veterns of the race and they were also some of the most affectionate dogs I have ever met. The lead dog - a female all white gorgeous 2 1/2 foot tall mushpot of a dog just climbed half way onto my lap and layed her head firmly against me wanting pets and gave me lots and lots of kisses.

The dogs live in the summer camps in the middle of a glacier for the summer @ 4 months and then go back to their respective homes for the winter and will then train and race accordingly. The funniest site was the dogs standing or sleeping on top of their dog houses that look like little igloos.
