Sony Bio Battery powers gadgets on grape juice and sports drinks

Sony Japan has just posted a short video and press release detailing its latest fuel cell - a device that uses not ethanol or methanol this time, but glucose extracted from grape juice and sports drinks.

The four-cell array can be seen powering speakers attached to a Network Walkman after being filled with a squirt of grape extract and a small fan using the sugar in a Gatorade-type sports drink.

According to the release, enzymes from the labs of Kyoto University’s agriculture department break down the glucose, allowing the Bio Battery - as they’ve dubbed it - to generate a world record 50mW of power.

So, let’s see - carry around combustible alcohol for our future fuel cells or share a splash of Gatorade with the gadgets? Hmm…

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Millions of inventions pass quietly through the U.S. patent office each year. Patent No. 7,033,406 did, too, until energy insiders spotted six words in the filing that sounded like a death knell for the internal combustion engine.

An Austin-based startup called EEStor promised "technologies for replacement of electrochemical batteries," meaning a motorist could plug in a car for five minutes and drive 500 miles roundtrip between Dallas and Houston without gasoline.

By contrast, some plug-in hybrids on the horizon would require motorists to charge their cars in a wall outlet overnight and promise only 50 miles of gasoline-free commute. And the popular hybrids on the road today still depend heavily on fossil fuels.

"It's a paradigm shift," said Ian Clifford, chief executive of Toronto-based ZENN Motor Co., which has licensed EEStor's invention. "The Achilles' heel to the electric car industry has been energy storage. By all rights, this would make internal combustion engines unnecessary."

Clifford's company bought rights to EEStor's technology in August 2005 and expects EEStor to start shipping the battery replacement later this year for use in ZENN Motor's short-range, low-speed vehicles.

The technology also could help invigorate the renewable-energy sector by providing efficient, lightning-fast storage for solar power, or, on a small scale, a flash-charge for cell phones and laptops.

Skeptics, though, fear the claims stretch the bounds of existing technology to the point of alchemy.

"We've been trying to make this type of thing for 20 years and no one has been able to do it," said Robert Hebner, director of the University of Texas Center for Electromechanics. "Depending on who you believe, they're at or beyond the limit of what is possible."

But British scientists claim they have invented a revolutionary device that seems to 'create' energy from virtually nothing.

Their so-called thermal energy cell could soon be fitted into ordinary homes, halving domestic heating bills and making a major contribution towards cutting carbon emissions.

Even the makers of the device are at a loss to explain exactly how it works - but sceptical independent scientists carried out their own tests and discovered that the 12in x 2in tube really does produce far more heat energy than the electrical energy put in.

The device seems to break the fundamental physical law that energy cannot be created from nothing - but researchers believe it taps into a previously unrecognised source of energy, stored at a sub-atomic level within the hydrogen atoms in water.

Imagine a tube that acts like a little spring, squishing together when a force is provided, and expanding back out to normal when the force stops. Now, imagine that the tube is so small that wind could make it compress. At this size, a piezoelectric effect occurs, providing energy. This things are microscopic, expanding and contracting.

Now imagine millions of these things on top of the vinyl siding of your house, virtually invisible, yet providing all the energy you need -- even Air conditioning!

I have a personal reason for despising his ilk.

My mother worked at a hospital for close to 30 years. Then, before she could retire, the hospital let her go, so they would not have to pay her a retirement. Increasing their bottom line was more important to them than a person who worked her heart out as their employee. These people coldly decided that some staff should lose their retirement and leave the hospital with NOTHING. These people were Republicans.

She had divorced in 1989, and the move to let her go left her with no insurance, and no income. At the age of 60 she could receive SOME Social Security, but not much. Her medicine costs “drove her into the poorhouse”. Although she paid $125.00 a month in rent, she could not afford to pay both bills and medicine. She filed for bankruptcy, and went on Medicaid.

In 2000 her landlord died, so she had to move. We moved her to a different apartment, and we, her children, split the cost of it, so she could use what little Social Security she got for food and knick knacks. One day she had a stomach ache. She went to the hospital, and they said it was a hernia.

While she was in the hospital, she was moved to a room that was apparently not completed. Something wasn't screwed in properly in the bathroom, and when she put her weight on it, it moved and she fell.
Sometimes when you tell a story, there are more than one thread you need to develop. Now in this case there are several, but the most important is the Nurses.

My mother was born September 27, 1937. In her day, nurses cared for all people under their charge. The job didn't pay well, but it required that you had a good heart. The same could be said of teachers, my father's chosen profession. My father was earning $17,600 in 1977 as a teacher. That was with 19 years of service; he started in 1957 at $2000 a year!

By 2001, my father was making over $50,000 a year as a teacher. And apparently the pay improved for nurses as well. But the main drawback to improving the pay of nurses and teachers is that people no longer went into it because they cared and wanted to contribute to society. Now you have teachers and nurses that are only there to collect a paycheck.

A nurse that doesn't care about her charges? Unthinkable, or so I thought. I guess you stereotype nurses to be like my mom, trying to live up to the whole Florence Nightingale thing. After all, this is the nurse's prayer:

My mother's nurse was quite the opposite. Every day I would come in, and she would be sitting in the office, listening to Rush Limbaugh. My sister Patty was the first to notice it, and she asked her to turn it off. At first, she did so, but later she just ignored Patty.

Or was it Melanie? I have four sisters, and I remember one of them asking the nurse to shut him off. My mother didn't like his attitude, or his opinions; he spews bile and hatred. Most of my family feels the same way. The problem with recalling all the events leading up to my mother's death is that it was a traumatic experience.
My mother's first operation was on April 21st at 12:30 AM. According to the doctor, the Prednisone had caused her intestinal walls to be like tissue paper. He made a mess of things and had to resect a part of her bowel. When she came out, we were told the next 72 hours were critical; they would make the difference between whether she lived or died.

April 22. My mom was doing better. I saw her in the corridor when they were taking her to XRay. She sounded just like the mom I knew; animated, lucid, and in good spirits. She needed to have another surgery, because the doctor had not done a perfect job, but she was really glad to see me.

The next couple of days, she was sleeping, or kind of out of it. It turns out they were giving her Oxycontin for the pain (so I guess there was less for Rush), and sometimes it made her a bit loopy. And they didn't have the right prednizone for her, so she fought them on it a little. But I assumed she would make a full recovery.
April 25. Rush Limbaugh does his usual radio rant. This particular day was all about how people on Medicaid were freeloaders. I half heard it, but was not paying attention, because I was worried about my mother. I should have been more worried about what kind of nurse would actually buy into Rush Limbaugh's philosophy.

April 26 was my uncle John's birthday. John was a Vietnam war hero, having been in the Navy. My mother actually arranged to give him a shirt for his birthday. He was happy about it.

On April 27, the nurse decided to move my mother from ICU to NICU. I was there when she explained it to the nurse in the other station. It was "to make room for a paying customer." I will never forget those words as long as I live. Apparently, my mother deserved a lower standard of care than another, because she was on Medicaid!
I was stewing about that at 7:30 PM on the 27th, as I sat in the waiting room, waiting for my turn to see her again. At approximately 9:00 PM, my mother had a subdural hematoma which apparently smashed one side of her brain into the other, turning her into a vegetable. Normally subdural hematomas are the result of a fall, and many build up over time. They can be caught by a CAT scan, but people on Medicaid are apparently limited in this regard; for no CAT scans were ever done on my mother; despite the fact that she fell while in their care.

On May 1, 2001, at 6:02 PM my mother died. Her heart was beating, but she simply stopped breathing. Her BP dropped, and then she was gone. They put her in a green body bag and zipped it up.

When someone you really care about dies, it is a truly significant event. You tend to focus on everything that happened at the time, over and over, to try to figure out what went wrong. There is a lot of anger, a lot of hurt, and sometimes you cannot separate REAL hurt from imagined. But if someone needs medical attention, and the attention they receive is bound by their financial acumen, that is a political decision that I cannot abide. If you believe that all people on Medicaid are freeloaders after reading what happened to my mom, then go ahead and vote for the likes George W. Bush, and the right wing philosophy he represents. I will never vote for ANYONE who thinks like this again!

You can't imagine how glad I am to hear about all these inventions, they could be the future solutions for a better life for all of us. As I understand form many documentaries, the earth resources are pretty limited so we need to adapt really fast and find new more efficient and less harmful way of having a normal life. A reliable heat transfer mechanism could be a good start.

The combined wealth of the diners has been estimated at £100bn. But the most unusual aspect of the evening is not the price of the tickets but the nature of the floor show. In place of professional performers, the guests will be regaled by people who are not always thought of as entertainers, though some think they are all mad. They are inventive British boffins who care about climate change.

They are hoping that the showcase dinner will knock years off the time it can take for industry to see the mass marketing potential of a new discovery. And the one that will be shown to Mr Gore and fellow guests is highly marketable and could revolutionise the market in clean technology, according to the founder of the British Inventors' Society, Kane Kramer.

Mr Kramer, who was 23 in 1979 when he conceptualised the technology that led to the creation of the first MP3 player, refused to give specific details of the new discovery, or to name the inventor, so as to maintain the element of surprise for Friday. But he indicated that it is a breakthrough in micro-technology, and that British scientists who have tested it are convinced that it will work.

BBC News is reporting that a French company has developed a pollution-free car which runs on compressed air. India's Tata Motors has the car under production and it may be on sale in Europe and India by the end of the year.

The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico have found a way of using sunlight to recycle carbon dioxide and produce fuels like methanol or gasoline.

The Sunlight to Petrol, or S2P, project essentially reverses the combustion process, recovering the building blocks of hydrocarbons. They can then be used to synthesize liquid fuels like methanol or gasoline. Researchers said the technology already works and could help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, although large-scale implementation could be a decade or more away.

"This is about closing the cycle," said Ellen Stechel, manager of Sandia's Fuels and Energy Transitions department. "Right now our fossil fuels are emitting CO2. This would help us manage and reduce our emissions and put us on the path to a carbon-neutral energy system."

MARK COLVIN: The Bali climate change summit started today and many of those attending would be already aware that sometimes, the solution can also be part of the problem.

One of the solutions proposed has been biofuel but biofuel can bring its own devastation.

Thousands of hectares of forest in Indonesia, for instance, have been logged to make way for biofuels.

There are also concerns about the environmental damage that biofuels could cause in Australia.

Some of the plants being proposed as biofuel crops are weeds which could have a devastating impact on wildlife across the country.

Paula Kruger reports.

PAULA KRUGER: The struggle to find alternative energy sources that don't contribute to climate change has created a boom in biofuels.

This is something worries Tim Low from the Invasive Species Council. He says some biofuel crops could have a devastating impact on the Australian landscape.

TIM LOW: We don't have enough arable land. I mean that is very well recognised by CSIRO so then you get the promotion of plants that are highly weedy so they actually can be grown on marginal non-agricultural land but that carries a very high weed risk.

PAULA KRUGER: Are there plants that you classify as weeds that are being proposed right now as biofuel crops in Australia?

TIM LOW: Oh absolutely. The South Australian government is very gung-ho about promoting giant reed. Now that is on the World Conservation Union of 100 of the world's worst invaders.

Now their scientific unit SARDI has active trials underway right now and this is a rank grass. It grows about seven or eight metres high which has taken over waterways in California. In California they are spending millions of dollars a year removing it. They have a biological control program to bring in insects to eat it up. The South Australian government is promoting it.

Then there is jatropha, which is a weed around the world that has been declared a prohibited weed in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Queensland government is planning to allow trials and a meeting will be held Thursday this week to consider the future of those.

This is very, very ongoing.

PAULA KRUGER: You have already raised concerns. You had a recent report that raised your concerns about the weed potential in biofuels. Have those concerns been taken seriously at this stage?

TIM LOW: They certainly are by government agencies. There is a lot of scepticism so you've got public servants who are being told by their governments to promote biofuels but they recognise exactly the kind of problems that I am talking about.

I mean this information is very widespread in the literature but because there is a popular demand to do something, politicians are hearing that. They are offering investments, investment grants for biofuels and so people need to acquit these grants even though in some cases they personally recognise that there just doesn't seem to be much in this.

PAULA KRUGER: So it is government funding that is driving an industry that could cause a big environmental problem for Australia?

TIM LOW: That's right and that is certainly the case with jatropha where I have actually talked to the officer who is dispensing grants. I said look, why are getting behind jatropha, I mean this isn't the right plan at all and he is saying that no-one else is applying for the grant.

PAULA KRUGER: Deborah O'Connell from Sustainable Ecosystems at the CSIRO says the weed risk, of biofuel crops are being taken seriously.

DEBORAH O'CONNELL: These new plants are one of a range of strategies that we could have and I think they need to be evaluated not only for their weed potential but also for their yield because at the moment, a lot of the yield has been quoted very high numbers of four to 8,000 litres of oil per hectare are based largely on overseas results and they haven't been looked at in Australia.

PAULA KRUGER: So there is still a lot more work to be done in Australia when it comes to researching appropriate biofuel crops?

DEBORAH O'CONNELL: Absolutely, absolutely. There is a lot of work to be done particularly in that area because we have very little idea of the yields of those things as well as the biosecurity risks.

PAULA KRUGER: The Invasive Species council is calling on the new federal government to form a steering committee that can work with the states so there is a more cohesive policy on offering grants for biofuel crops.

MARK COLVIN: A CSIRO researcher says his team has discovered a process to produce a biofuel using green waste, including household garden clippings and waste paper.

They call it bio-crude oil.

The team says it has the potential to replace conventional crude oil, as well as the biofuels which are currently produced using plant crops, like sugar and corn.

Dr Steven Loffler and his colleagues developed the process in a laboratory, but now they're keen to patent the technique and build a demonstration plant within two years.

Biodiesel (1) has usually been made from the oil pressed from agricultural crops such as corn, soya, and rapeseed. However there is not enough arable land on the earth's surface to grow sufficient corn to replace the amount of fossil fuel oil we use today, let alone tomorrow. There are alternatives such as Jatropha (2), an amazing plant which grows on the worst soils and has seeds with an oil content of well over 30%, but again enormous swathes of the planet's land would have to be dedicated to growing this crop.

What we need is an incredibly fast growing, biodegradable crop with enormous oil yields. Algae therefore came forward as potentially the most efficient crop to grow for biodiesel. It's oil content is a whopping 50+% formed as it converts carbon dioxide from the air and sunlight into energy, and it has enormous growth rates.

Just about anyone who has ever considered buying an electric vehicle (EV) and then decided against it cites one fact — and one fact alone — that caused them to rethink the idea. Range. The inability to drive long distances without enduring a five- or six-hour "refuel" has kept many of us out of the EV market. EEStor, a privately held Cedar Park, Texas, company dedicated to the design and manufacturing of high-density storage devices, has taken a major step forward in eradicating this problem.

Those long charging times result from the fact that most EV power systems rely on lithium-ion batteries, which take time to charge. Quick-charging the packs is possible, but this will result in shorter battery life. Neither way works well for the consumer. So the folks at EEStor decided to turn away from traditional battery systems and look toward capacitors, power storage devices that rely on two charged terminals separated by a non-conductive material called a dialectric.

There has been speculation all over the Web these past few months that EEStor had finally "cracked the code" and created an ultra-capacitor that is better than a lithium-ion battery cell in almost every way. It seems that the company has finally done so: On January 17 EEStor announced third-party verification of the dialectric powders needed to make these capacitors.

"This is a very meaningful milestone in terms of production of an ultra-capacitor for use in electric vehicles," noted Ian Clifford, CEO and founder of Zenn Motor Company. Zenn is an electric vehicle producer that holds exclusive rights to use this new technology in vehicles up to 2,645 pounds curb weight, roughly the same as a Honda Accord or Toyota Prius. "It will allow for the commercialization of high-range, high-speed vehicles for mass production," he said, finally making these cars a reality for the general public.

Clifford pointed out that there are presently more than 40 million cars worldwide that fit this weight specification, so the potential uses for this technology are huge. Zenn expects to receive the first capacitor units by the end of the year and will have them in its NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, meant for around-town driving) by the middle of next year. Zenn is also developing a vehicle using the new capacitors that will be capable of highway speeds and meets all highway safety standards. It is actively seeking dealers to partner with throughout North America.

Unlike regular lithium-ion battery cells, the EEStor ultra-capacitors, or EESUs as they are called, are lighter, more versatile and can be charged and discharged up to a million times.

It also should be noted that, if these things are carrying the amount of charge that they say they're carrying, a dielectric breakdown would not just destroy the capacitor, but also the car, the driver, and probably a good bit of the road underneath it.

Ethanol Versus Solar Energy

Solar energy produced from one acre of land, compared to the ethanol energy produced from one acre of corn.

One acre of good corn growing land in America will produce about 140 bushels of corn during a one year growing season. As a matter of interest the all time record harvest is over 260 bushels per acre but we also have to remember that more often the all time low has been zero bushels per acre. A bushel is considered to be about 56 lbs.

The current corn harvest is only possible due to the artificial fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that are routinely applied to America’s corn crop. A little over 2 lbs of fertilizer and chemicals are used for each bushel of corn grown. This averages about 1 lb of nitrogen, 0.4 lbs of phosphate and 0.5 lbs of potassium. The herbicides and pesticides amount to about 0.22 lbs of active ingredients per bushel. This might not sound like much but on Kentucky corn alone, pesticides and herbicides equal about 3 million lbs per year. Corn is responsible for a hell of a lot of toxic chemicals that have created untold difficulties.

The USDA estimates that it takes 53,000 BTU’s of energy to convert 1 bushel of corn to 2.8 gallons of ethanol and most of the new ethanol plants are using coal for this energy. The USDA vigorously supports corn based ethanol production; unfortunately they are using accounting methods that completely ignore any environmental impacts from the entire process. These are the same accounting methods that are currently wrecking the planet.

Then there are the energy costs associated with building the equipment the farmer uses to grow the corn, the energy costs that the farmer used himself, the associated production and transportation energy incurred to get seed, fuel, fertilizer and chemicals to the farmer, the energy to get the corn to the ethanol plants, the energy needed to turn the corn into ethanol and then the energy to get the ethanol into your car. There are many other energy costs that are directly attributable to the production of ethanol but we don’t count them for gasoline so why should we count them for ethanol? The answer is, because they exist. Ignoring all the little details to make gasoline or ethanol look better than they actually are is called fooling yourself. Many Americans complain about $3+/gallon gasoline but fail to realize that the true cost of a gallon of gasoline is currently about $20/gallon.1

So the argument continues but it seems reasonable to conclude that gasoline, diesel and ethanol are much more expensive than the pump price. Smart guys have spent a lot of time looking at this and have come to the same conclusion.2

Ocean motion used to power up homes

When it comes to tapping energy from the ocean, off-shore oil rigs are often what comes to mind. But the ocean itself is proving to be an efficient and environmentally friendly source of energy.

Blustery winds threaten to topple Iain Russell off the dock into the narrow stretch of water connecting the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

But those gusts are a key reason why his company, Wave Dragon Ltd., plans to anchor the world's largest wave energy converter several miles out to sea off this small town on the southwestern Welsh coast.

More than a century after the industrial revolution's coal mines and steel works turned Wales' lush green valleys into stark black hills, the strong winds that batter its coastline are playing a major part in the local government's plan to turn the country green again.

By 2025, Wales wants to generate all its electricity from renewable sources and even become a net exporter of power.

Wales is betting that two huge projects _ a $30 billion tidal barrage in the Severn Estuary and the largest biomass plant in the world in Port Talbot _ will produce most of the electricity needed to reach its 2025 target.

For the rest, the local government is hoping that its natural winds, streamlined bureaucracy, access to skilled labor, proximity to universities and state funding will prove enticing to companies in both the renewables and clean technology sectors.

Going green could make or break Wales following the death of the mining industry in the 1980s. While Cardiff has blossomed from a provincial city into a significant capital in recent years under a retail- and services-led boom, rural Wales has limped along on tourism and agriculture.

A parade of companies deciding to make products from cars to cell phone chargers in Wales shows that the strategy is paying off.

Wave Dragon was encouraged to move its headquarters from Denmark to Wales in part by a $10 million grant from the Welsh European Funding Office.

"The funding dried up in Denmark so we started looking elsewhere," said Russell. "We also discovered how much more wave energy there is here than in the North Sea."

The company plans to locate its wave energy converter about 2 miles to 3 miles off the Welsh coast for testing over three to five years. The barge produces electricity directly from the power of the water by first enhancing, then pulling in oncoming waves to turbines in the bottom of the structure.

Russell said that the project could produce enough electricity each year during the testing phase to meet the demands of between 2,500 and 2,000 homes.

Sapphire Energy - plant online now

A San Diego company said Wednesday that it could turn algae into oil, producing a green-colored crude yielding ultra-clean versions of gasoline and diesel without the downsides of biofuel production.

The year-old company, called Sapphire Energy, uses algae, sunlight, carbon dioxide and non-potable water to make "green crude" that it contends is chemically equivalent to the light, sweet crude oil that has been fetching more than $130 a barrel in New York futures trading. - LA Times
