Is it working for anyone?
hello sam!
Great to hear you on a weeknight. BTW, no vido here either.
But glad to get the audio on the stream. I knew you'd have some serious stuff to say & people to interview about Rove. This show is a refreshing change from the awful stuff that now dominates my AAR affliate, the once-flagship WWRL. When will Mark Green wake up and realize that the dreck that's on AAR now is not helping it to survive and grow?
WMR's take on Rove Resignation
August 13, 2007 -- Rove to resign effective August 31.
Karl Rove hinted last year that he was prepared to step down as George W. Bush's chief political adviser. However, that was when he was a target of Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald in the criminal probe of the leak to the media of the identities of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson and her covert counter-proliferation brass plate company by Scooter Libby, Rove, and other administration officials. After Fitzgerald declined to indict Rove, even with a sealed indictment from the grand jury in hand, Rove stayed on through the November 2006 election.
However, as WMR has previously reported, federal investigators have opened a criminal investigation into the activities of Rove in helping to formulate and carrying out the political prosecution of and criminal conspiracy against now imprisoned former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman by at least two Republican U.S. Attorneys; at least one federal judge; and top Alabama Republicans, including Governor Bob Riley, Attorney General Troy King, Deputy Attorney General Joseph Fitzpatrick, and former Attorney General Bob Pryor.
Our Alabama sources have revealed that the FBI began an investigation of Rove and Alabama Republicans based on information received from a number of confidential sources and witnesses to the criminal conspiracy to destroy the political career of Siegelman and the future of the Alabama Democratic Party through the political prosecution of Siegelman and the use of rigged voting machines in the 2002 gubernatorial election.
WMR has learned that unlike the investigation of Rove for his role in the CIA leak case, the criminal investigation of Rove and the Alabama GOP in the Siegelman matter has the personal support of FBI Director Robert Mueller and career FBI agents in Washington and in field offices in Alabama and Florida.

Iowa GOP Straw Poll Post
Iowa GOP Straw Poll Post Mortem
by BC · 8/13/2007 04:34:00 PM ET
So, the first real test of the 2008 Presidential campaign came and went in Ames, Iowa. And what did we really learn?
Is Romney the new frontrunner? Not really. He allegedly spent a ton of money to outpace Huckabee and Brownback. I know he's supposed to be an excellent business man, but I'm not sure he's making good investments.
No, what we really learned this past weekend is that the GOP is depressed. The turnout in Iowa for this straw poll was pathetic, much worse than the last competitive primary in 1999. This is good news for the Democratic nominee, as long as they don't screw it up:
For starters, turnout this year declined sharply from the 1999 straw poll. That year, more than 23,000 Iowans--only Iowans are allowed to vote, though anyone is welcome to come to Ames--cast ballots. On Saturday, only 14,302 votes were cast. Why should an event that draws only 14,000 people be given the significance the straw poll receives.

Academic accused of
Academic accused of insulting Thai king in exam paper
Sun Aug 12, 2007 11:10PM EDT
By Darren Schuettler
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Question 8 on Professor Boonsong Chaisingkananont's examination may seem a harmless academic exercise.
"Do you think the monarchy is necessary for Thai society? How should it adapt to a democratic system? Please debate."
But in Thailand, one of the few countries where laws protecting royalty are strictly enforced, it is a taboo question which could land the 46-year-old philosophy lecturer in jail.
Acting on a complaint from a fellow professor at Silpakorn University, police are investigating whether Boonsong insulted King Bhumibol Adulyadej by asking his first-year students to debate the role of the monarchy in exams in 2005 and 2006.
Professor Winai Poonampol said he went to police because Boonsong's teachings posed "a threat to society".

Katrina aid goes toward
Katrina aid goes toward football condos
By Jay Reeves, Associated Press Writer | August 13, 2007
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama's football stadium.
About 10 condominium projects are going up in and around Tuscaloosa, and builders are asking up to $1 million for units with granite countertops, king-size bathtubs and 'Bama decor, including crimson couches and Bear Bryant wall art.
While many of the buyers are Crimson Tide alumni or ardent football fans not entitled to any special Katrina-related tax breaks, many others are real estate investors who are purchasing the condos with plans to rent them out.
And they intend to take full advantage of the generous tax benefits available to investors under the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005, or GO Zone, according to Associated Press interviews with buyers and real estate officials.
The GO Zone contains a variety of tax breaks designed to stimulate construction in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. It offers tax-free bonds to developers to finance big commercial projects like shopping centers or hotels. It also allows real estate investors who buy condos or other properties in the GO Zone to take accelerated depreciation on their purchases when they file their taxes.

Venezuela's Chavez says oil headed for $100 barrel
Sun Aug 12, 2007 10:05AM EDT
CARACAS (Reuters) - World oil prices are headed for $100 per barrel, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez predicted on Saturday, and said he will cut supplies to the United States if the U.S. government "attacks" the South American nation again.
"I've always said that oil prices are headed straight to $100 per barrel," he said during a televised speech. "We should prepare ourselves for those prices of one hundred dollars."
Chavez said high oil prices were the sign of a "global crisis" in energy caused by voracious consumption that has vastly reduced available oil reserves.
Chavez has accused the United States of plotting a bungled coup that ousted him for two days in 2002, though Washington denies the accusations, and has repeatedly made conditional threats to cut off oil sales to the United States that historically account for 12 to 15 percent of U.S. imports.
"No one should think that we're going to stop sending oil to the United States, no -- unless they attack us again," Chavez said during a speech to leaders of Caribbean nations meeting in Caracas for an energy summit.
"If they attack us again like they did in April of 2002 ... there will be no oil."

Four foreign soldiers killed in Afghan attacks
Sun Aug 12, 2007 6:49AM EDT
KABUL (Reuters) - A roadside bomb killed three foreign soldiers in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, a U.S. military statement said.
The soldiers were conducting combat operations in Khogiani district of Nangarhar province when their vehicle was hit. A civilian interpreter also was killed, the statement said.
It did not give the nationalities of the victims, but most soldiers operating with U.S.-led coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan are Americans.
In a separate incident, one British soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the British Ministry of Defense said.
The incidents bring the numbers of foreign troops killed in action in Afghanistan this year to 99.

Blast injures 12 soldiers in southeast Turkey
Sun Aug 12, 2007 8:19AM EDT
DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Twelve soldiers were injured, three of them seriously, on Sunday when Kurdish guerrillas detonated a roadside bomb in southeast Turkey, military officials said.
They said militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) planted the bomb on a country road in the Eruh district of Siirt province near the border with Iraq and exploded it as a minibus carrying the troops passed by.
Soldiers launched an operation in the region to capture the rebels.
Roadside bombs have become an increasingly common tactic of the PKK which launched a separatist insurgency in 1984 with the aim of creating an ethnic homeland in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey.

Rove has ZERO losses. How's George Tenet, Wolfi, Rummy doing?

The DEMS are exactly where they drive themselves. Rove may have used a sharpie to mark up a map with the path to disaster that has made EXXON more profit than any CORP in history, revitalized the DoD with a new and improved perpetual war to replace the "COLD" one and secured the PRIVATE FEDERAL RESERVE OFF SHORE BANKING instruction in perpetuity, but at any point the DEMS could have followed the advice of Gen. Odom, John Dean, James K. Galbraith, Gore Vidal .or even Gravel and Kucinich to stear the TITANIC away from the now inevitable collapse of US CURRENCY and GLOBAL DOMINATION by the PMC IRON TRIANGLE NEW WORLD ORDER.
The Business Plot exposed by Smedley Butler, the cocktail putsch to oust FDR was founded on the GOOD intention of using Hitter's tactics to reverse the crash of the great depression. If the Gray Lady didn't have enough problems battling industrywide woes, now she has Rupert Murdoch to worry about.
The media billionaire has made no secret of his desire to take aim at the New York Times once his News Corp. acquires Dow Jones & Co. and its flagship Wall Street Journal in a $5-billion deal expected to close this fall.
Murdoch said during an earnings conference call last week that he wanted the financial newspaper to have "more coverage of national, international and nonbusiness news . . . all to better compete with the New York Times and other national newspapers."
In private, Murdoch has been more blunt.
"Rupert thinks the Times is vulnerable," a longtime senior executive said. "He's going to go after them."
Like other newspapers across the country, the Times has been tightening its belt and has seen its stock price languish as readers and advertisers migrate to the Web. Nonetheless, it has fared better than other publications, retaining much of its circulation and advertising by remaining the essential newspaper of the East Coast elite.
So where does Murdoch believe the Times is vulnerable?

Facebook's code leak raises fears of fraud
Bobbie Johnson, technology correspondent The Guardian Monday August 13 2007
Experts are warning internet users to be more careful with their private information after secret code from the popular social-networking site Facebook was published on the internet.
This is the first time that some of the site's secret operational code has been made public. Although it does not allow hackers to access private information directly, it could help criminals close in on personal data, according to one expert.
Nik Cubrilovic, of Techcrunch.com, said: "This leak is not good news for Facebook, as it raises the question of how secure a user's private data really is. Facebook has become such a success and has such a high profile that it has become a magnet for attacks against its systems."
The Facebook craze has been sweeping the world, and the site now has more than 30 million users, including 3.5 million in Britain. New users registering for a profile on the site usually publish their date of birth and home town for anybody to see, and in many cases let approved friends see more personal details such as their home address and telephone number. Though this information is semi-private, criminals who become "friends" with other users have the potential to find out much more information about them.
The company blamed the leaked code on a "bug" that meant that it was published accidentally, and said users should not be concerned. Facebook's spokeswoman, Brandee Barker, said: "It was not a security breach and did not compromise user data in any way."

The Architect and the War
Karl Rove played a key role in the selling of the Iraq War, which may help explain why he’s still bullish on the ultimate outcome, no matter how grim the news.
By Michael Isikoff
Newsweek
Updated: 2:35 p.m. CT Aug 13, 2007
Aug. 13, 2007 - In the summer of 2003, Karl Rove flew off to Bohemian Grove—the famed male-only retreat for the wealthy and powerful—where he had a revealing exchange in the Northern California woods about the state of affairs in Iraq. Spotting AOL founder James Kimsey, a big financial backer of President Bush who had just gotten back from Baghdad, Rove shouted out: “Hey Kimsey, it must have been wonderful to see the happy faces on all those liberated Iraqis!”
Kimsey was appalled. “Are you nuts?” he replied. He tried to tell the president’s political guru that the Iraqis he saw were sullen and resentful and that “if we don’t do something soon, all hell is going to break loose.”
But Rove wanted to hear nothing of it. “Nice talking to you,” Rove responded and walked away.
That exchange (recounted in the new afterword to the paperback edition of "Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal and the Selling of the Iraq War," the book I co-wrote with David Corn, tells much about the brook-no-dissent ethos that Rove brought to the Bush White House. It also puts in some context Rove’s cheery comments this weekend to friendly journalist Paul Gigot, the editorial page director of the Wall Street Journal, as he announced his surprise resignation from the White House (and his plans to write a book on the Bush presidency). “Iraq will be in a better place,” as the surge continues, he said. As for President Bush’s political standing, “he will move back up in the polls.”
Maybe so. But from the day he went to work in the White House, Karl Rove has been Bush’s enabler as much as his master strategist–a key adviser who saw no subtleties or nuance, brushed aside internal qualms and ferociously went after critics who raised any questions about the president’s policies.
This was especially true of Iraq—the defining initiative of the Bush presidency—in which Rove’s behind-the-scenes role in the selling and spinning of the war was far more significant than is commonly known.

Dems Work to Foil White
Dems Work to Foil White House Recess Ploys
By Paul Kiel - August 13, 2007, 4:03 PM
Perhaps a little wiser after seven months in the majority, Democrats have strategized to prevent the White House from utilizing some of its sneakier powers while Congress is in recess.
There'll be no recess appointments this time around, Roll Call reports (sub. req.), meaning the White House won't be taking advantage of Congress' vacation to install any contested nominees. That's due to a deal between Bush and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).
Last recess, the White House made a number of controversial recess appointments, including Swift Boat backer Sam Fox as ambassador to Belgium. In order to prevent that sort of thing from happening again, Reid had plotted to keep the Senate in "pro forma" session during the recess -- whereby the Senate floor personnel show up every three days to make it an official session. But now Reid and Bush have made a deal, according to Roll Call. Bush won't make any recess appointments and Reid has promised to move some of his nominees when Senate gets back in session.
Roll Call also reports that there's a similar game being played over the ethics and lobbying reform bill that Congress passed last month.

Italian Gun Runners in Biz with Iraqi Ministry
By Spencer Ackerman - August 13, 2007, 12:38 PM
The Iraqi government of Nouri al-Maliki takes support where it can get it. Over 160,000 U.S. troops guarantee its existence. It's cultivating an ever-closer bond with its fellow Shiites in Iran. But Italian criminals have to rank as rather unexpected allies.
The Iraqi government, a very shady Iraqi company and a group of Italian arms smugglers found a potent business opportunity in Iraq's black market for weapons, according to Italian investigators cited by the Associated Press. And that's a thriving trade. Just last week, a Government Accountability Office report found that the U.S. military's training command in Iraq couldn't account for 190,000 pistols and AK-47s sent to the Iraqi army and police in 2004 and 2005. Those guns, in all likelihood, made their way from the Iraqi security forces to the thriving black market in weaponry, where they're sure to be joined by many more: Iraqi soldiers are set to receive 100,000 M-16s and M-4s from the U.S., making their old AK-47s a new source of quick cash.
Enter the Interior Ministry, by far the most powerful bureaucracy in Iraq, and one that exists as an instrument of Shiite power.

VoteVets solicits NFL’s
VoteVets solicits NFL’s help obtaining Tillman documents. In a letter released today by VoteVets, twenty veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan write to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, asking him to call on Bush to release documents related to the death of Pat Tillman. “We know that the National Football League is not in the business of partisan politics, nor should it be,” the letter states. “However, in this case…the House committee requests were signed by both the Democratic Chairman and Republican Ranking Member, so this is not a partisan witch-hunt, but merely a quest to get to the truth about the death of Pat Tillman.”

Conyers: Rove still needs to
Conyers: Rove still needs to come clean. House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) released a statement, saying that Rove’s departure does not put an end to the investigation into the attorney firings scandal:
The need for Karl Rove to explain his role in the firing of the U.S. Attorneys does not diminish when he leaves the White House. Our investigation to date has revealed the White House’s contempt for the rule of law and its interest in the politicization of the Department of Justice.
While resignations at DoJ and the White House continue to mount, questions raised by this investigation remain. We will continue to seek answers to these questions and expect full cooperation from Mr. Rove and other officials regardless of whether they are employed by the White House.

Murdoch is stuck in the past
He's tilting at windmills that he imagines from his past. The NYTimes has terribly declining readership, and the Wall Street Journal is crap too. Murdoch is holding on to the dream of the heavyweight championship between him and the NYTimes that he has had for over 2 decades. The world has moved on. Everyone around him, even his sons are telling him he's wasting his money; but ol' Rupert is hanging on to this dream he has had forever. He is another guy [like Rove] who is living in a fantasy world far far from reality. I hope he sinks everything he can into this fight, and so does the Times, and then we just sit back while they both take each other out.
And if we're lucky, just like a few years ago when every other MSM organization tried to copy Murdoch, the other mainstream media corps will follow his lead.

A Streetwise Guide to next month's anti-war, anti-regime protest
August 13, 2007 -- A Streetwise Guide to next month's anti-war, anti-regime protest.
By WMR contributors
The Common Sense Guide to the September 15th DC War Protest: Part I
Because it's common knowledge that Washington, DC authorities and their lackeys in the political media vastly under-count protest marchers, it's common sense to undertake creative methods to ensure that the vital messages of next month's peace marches on September 15th resonate. Too many people have to make too many sacrifices to have their efforts trivialized in the way we in the Beltway see so often. Marchers are shunted off the Washington Mall onto side streets so that no accurate air photo estimate can be taken. Usually, there's some type of bogus rationale provided, such as "protecting the grass." Then hundreds of thousands are typically described as "tens of thousands."
In the spirit of Tom Paine and his Common Sense pamphlet of yore to help patriot's fight the first "King George" to blight our lives, these times also demand a courage, creativity and a fighting spirit. Here then are a few modest proposals for my fellow marchers to derive maximum impact:
· Don't march all the time. Counter-intuitive though it might be, the main arena on the Mall is not necessarily the place to be, at least for much of your stay. For the reasons mentioned, your efforts will be largely ignored and trivialized. Undercounts are only part of the problem. Photo images of the most bizarre and outlandish of the marchers" will be mainstreamed to prompt fear and animosity thought the country. Demagogues will reasserts their "Us-versus-Them" rhetoric ad nausea.
· Be creative, targeted and personal in your marching. This isn't simply a battle of the fat cats, religious fundies, and neo-fascists against America. There's not enough of them to prevail without their enablers in the business-as-usual centers of the media, lobbying community, Democratic Party, official bureaucracies and elsewhere who know the right thing to do -- but have lost their way by their skill at selling out the public interest -- and everything they wrote or said to enter professions -- in order to cash in on career advantage.
Coming later this week: New outrages, new solutions. A hint: This is a good time to "Pamper" a politician of your choice.

Putting power on paper:
Putting power on paper: researchers create thin battery
Published: Monday August 13, 2007
US researchers said Monday that they have invented a super lightweight, flexible, biodegradable battery in the form of a piece of paper in a development that is sure to create a buzz among makers of consumer electronics.
By harnessing the power of nanotechnology among other things, the researchers figured out how to shrink, reinvent and otherwise repackage the components of a regular lithium-ion battery in a sheet of cellulose paper.
An early prototype of the device, just big enough to be held between thumb and forefinger, kicks out 2.5 volts, enough juice to power a small fan, or illuminate a light, and its inventors say the battery can be easily scaled up to provide enough power to run any number of electronic gadgets.
"You can stack one sheet on top of another to boost the power output," said Robert Linhardt, a biology and chemistry professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and a member of the project's team.
"We've already experimented with 10 sheets, but there's nothing to stop you using 500, and they can be rolled, bent or folded into any shape or space you like. There are endless design possibilities."
Lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable power storage devices that drive many of today's modern consumer electronics gadgets such as laptop computers, digital cameras and cell phones, and even the electric motors in hybrid vehicles.
But as with every other component in these popular gizmos, manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to make these batteries more compact and efficient in order to maker their products still more functional and more portable.
Like many companies that are investigating alternative power storage devices, the Rensselaer scientists used carbon nanotubes -- tiny filaments -- as one of the basic building blocks of their invention.
The scientists substituted nanotubes for the electrodes used in a conventional battery and used an ionic liquid solution as the battery's electrolyte. The nanotubes were embedded in the cellulose -- the plant cells used in newsprint -- while the electrolyte was soaked into the material.

Indications point to money movements prep for another "incident"
August 13, 2007 -- Indications and warnings point to money movements preparatory for another "incident" in U.S.
WMR has learned from knowledgeable intelligence sources that there have been recent suspicious money movements involving a U.S-based Saudi businessman, Little Rock-based financial interests, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, a region where the Taliban from Afghanistan and so-called "Al Qaeda" forces still hold considerable sway, thanks to the stewardship of Pakistan's military dictator and George Bush ally General Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf recently conducted a pow-wow with Pakistan's top tribal leaders.
The Little Rock connection is a legacy of an old and clandestine money movement channel used by covert U.S. and foreign entities during the Savings & Loan scandals of the 1980s.
WMR has learned that suspicious money has recently moved into FATA from a Saudi source via Little Rock. WMR has also learned that the Saudi connection uses the name "Hassan" and the FATA interlocutor goes by the name "Adeel." The money has been associated by our intelligence sources with a future unspecified "plot" in the United States.
The Little Rock connection also reportedly involves financial interests in the Arkansas capital that were associated with the presidential campaigns of former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton. One particular connection is also linked to the funding of George W. Bush's political campaigns for Governor of Texas and President.
The corporate media in Washington and New York are beginning to embark on a new perception campaign designed to fixate the American people on a renewed "terrorist" threat. Trial balloons have been floated on requiring subway and bus passengers in Washington to submit to random searches and the resurrection of the military draft as indicated in recent remarks made by Bush's "war czar" Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute. According to an August 12 report in the Boston Globe, the Department of Homeland Security is handing out millions of dollars to cities and towns across America for video surveillance equipment. One such system is slated for Liberty, Kansas (population 95).
The Selective Service System, located amid a myriad of defense contractors at 1515 Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn, Virginia, is outfitted with advanced office and telecommunications systems and has over 300 employees standing ready to oversee a renewed military draft. Regional Selective Service offices, such as the large one in Chicago, are ready to coordinate renewed conscription. Over 2000 local draft boards are linked to the Selective Service System and are standing by to identify which local young men are draft eligible.
And with the news of Karl Rove's sudden departure as Bush's top political adviser, look for the vacuum to be filled by Dick Cheney, anxious for a military confrontation with Iran that could spur another "false flag" terrorist incident and re-imposition of the draft to supplement a weary and decimated active duty and reserve Army.

Global shares mixed as central banks inject more cash
Published: Monday August 13, 2007
World share prices were mixed Monday after heavy losses last week as central banks again pumped billions of dollars into the global banking system to ease worries about a possible credit crunch.
US shares failed to hold earlier gains and closed flat to marginally weaker, while European shares closed with large gains and most Asian stock markets were positive.
"Talk of a market meltdown is wildly overdone," said Julian Jessop, chief international economist at Capital Economics in London.
"This is the third sell-off since the start of 2006: markets recovered from the last two without any significant fall-out on the wider economy," he said.
"Admittedly, the latest sell-off is relatively severe. But for all the talk of a crisis on Wall Street, the SP (Standard Poor's) actually rose by 1.4 percent over last week as a whole," Jessop added.
On Wall Street Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 3.01 points, 0.02 percent, at 13,236.53 while the Nasdaq composite lost 0.10 percent to 2,542.24.
The broad-market Standard Poor's 500 index declined 0.05 percent to 1,452.92.
In Europe, the London FTSE 100 index closed up 2.99 percent at 6,219 points, in Frankfurt the DAX 30 gained 1.78 percent to 7,474.33 points and the Paris CAC 40 climbed 2.21 percent to 5,569.28 points.
Analysts agreed that action by central banks worldwide to head off a credit crunch, in which commercial banks restrict lending to companies, had been effective.
The European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan all injected cash into the money market to address liquidity shortages at commercial banks amid growing fears about the distressed US home loan sector.

Globe Economics
World share prices were mixed Monday after heavy losses last week as central banks again pumped billions of dollars into the global banking system to ease worries about a possible credit crunch.
So. How do we get this infusion to "trickle down" and benefit the majority?
Shit (cont'd)...
An ABC/Washington Post poll shows that 71 percent of Americans favor video surveillance systems, although the polling means and intentions of these two corporate entities are extremely dubious. A CBS/New York Times poll conducted in 2005 showed that 52 percent of Americans believed their privacy was under serious threat and 30 percent believed their privacy had already been lost. The ABC/Post poll would have us believe that two years later, and five years after 9/11, Americans have changed their positions and are now willing to give up their privacy right to intrusive video surveillance systems.
The agreement of the Democratic Congress to grant Bush more electronic surveillance powers will undoubtedly result in the Bush regime taking even more liberties with our inherent constitutionally-mandated freedoms.
Bush's presidential directive in May granting himself total government powers in the event of another catastrophic terrorist attack is clouded in secrecy. Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, was denied access to classified portions of the presidential directive.
The economic meltdown of the United States economy, the U.S. dollar, and the cash reserves of the nation may also trigger the Bush regime to take drastic and draconian actions.
The suspicious money movements a month before the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks represent another indication that Americans should now be on guard and brush off personal and family contingency plans that, at a minimum, should include a "get-away" case containing valid passports for all family members, valid visas (where applicable), important family and other papers and documents (including birth certificates, DD-214 military discharge papers, deeds, titles, and stock and bond certificates, birth and death certificates for parents and grandparents born abroad [important for establishing residency permits in countries like Ireland], and retirement documents), cash (U.S. dollars and various foreign currency, as applicable (Canadian dollars, Euros, Swiss francs, Mexican pesos, e.g.), vaccination and inoculation documents, credit and/or debit cards, diplomas and professional certificates, life and medical insurance papers or cards, prescriptions and a supply of prescription drugs, a Tri-band cellphone that is compatible with foreign telecommunications company SIM cards, other forms of identification (including driver licenses, pilot licenses, press credentials, employer ID, law enforcement badges, etc.), a high-capacity thumb drive storing important computer files, travelers' or cashier's checks, and, where possible, an open-ended airline, AMTRAK, or long distance bus ticket.
A longtime U.S. diplomat told WMR that he believes the country is where Germany was in 1937, which means that we could be on the verge of a severe crackdown on outbound foreign travel and intensive border controls. Remember the Coast Guard motto -- Semper Paratus -- "Always Ready" -- when contemplating your preparations for the next moves of the Bush regime.

US mounts major Iraq assault
Published: Monday August 13, 2007
US troops in Iraq launched a major assault against Al-Qaeda-linked militants and alleged Iranian-aided extremist groups on Monday as a Sunni leader accused Iran of plotting genocide against his people.
Operation Phantom Strike, the military announced, was being waged nationwide to disrupt Shiite extremist networks and insurgents affiliated to Al-Qaeda, which the Americans blame for most of the violence besieging the country.
"It consists of simultaneous operations throughout Iraq focused on pursuing remaining AQI (Al-Qaeda in Iraq) terrorists and Iranian-supported extremist elements," the military said.
"My intent is to continue to pressure AQI and other extremist elements throughout Iraq to reduce their capabilities," said Lieutenant General Ray Odierno, the number two commander of US forces in Iraq.
The US military declined to elaborate, citing "security concerns."
"But I can say this effort will be a top priority for combat units operating in Iraq for this period leading up to Ramadan," a spokesman said, referring to the Muslim month of fasting due to begin in the second week of September.
US authorities regularly accuse Iranian elements, including Tehran's elite Quds Force, of arming, funding and training Iraqi extremist groups to carry out attacks on its troops in Iraq -- charges denied by Tehran.
The US military also announced the arrests of a top "financier" of Iraqi extremist groups believed to be supported by the Quds Force, and a medical doctor it accused of harbouring and supplying Al-Qaeda affiliates in Baghdad.
Adnan al-Dulaimi, who heads a party in the main Sunni bloc that resigned from Iraq's fraying coalition government two weeks ago, meanwhile, launched a vitriolic verbal attack on Iran, accusing it of supporting genocide in Iraq.
In an open letter written in the name of Sunni Arabs, Dulaimi's office appealed to the wider Arab world to intervene.

Impeachment doomed to fail? Duh!
Well, the Republicans and bluedogs will ensure that. Here is where we turn:
The left is as easily distracted, currently by the phantasm of impeachment. Why all this clamor to launch a proceeding surely destined to fail, aimed at a duo who will be out of the White House in sixteen months anyway? Pursue them for war crimes after they’ve stepped down.
Mount an international campaign of the sort that has Henry Kissinger worrying at airports that there might be a lawyer with a writ standing next to the man with the limo sign. Right now the impeachment campaign is a distraction from the war and the paramount importance of ending it.

You can tell that Rudy Guiliani has read his Orwell:
"Freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do."
