McCain Calls for Bush/Cheney to ResignSubmitted by jbenet on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 10:20am.This is not a court of law, this is theater. The power of the word and what words a performer chooses to use are what to focus on. Of all the words that can be used to express an idea, why does a performer choose specific ones? What are the images the words convey? I am using the example of John McCain and Mitt Romney asking George Bush and Dick Cheney to resign as an example of how to deal with and understand what the media gives us as NEWS. This is a performance on an entertainment show. Not just today, everyday. Not just this show, all of them. Poetic words, theatrical images, pretty people in makeup, magic, lies, deception, actors on the stage. Often the theater is attractive, and we like it (like the Lion King.) More often, the performance is brick through the TV nonsense. But (I ask rhetorically for all the people that don't have a blog) how else are we to get our information, be informed, elect a president? News that is not blunt and honest is not news, it is theater, it is entertainment, it is lies. "Lets be clear, when it comes to regularity reform Senator McCain has fought time and time again, against the common sense rules of the road that could have prevented this crisis." is beyond dispute Boomp3.com and Mitt Romney answers "I have no idea what he is referring to as to regulations that would have prevented this crisis that John McCain supposedly didn't support." One wonders why the NBC News Chief White House Correspondent did not stop Mr. Romney right there and say to him, "You are being touted as having knowledge that makes you eligible to be on a commission that will oversee the largest government bailout in the history of the world and YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE IS REFERRING TO! " == In performance, the words that are chosen is important. Each word carries a definition and in that definition an image. One might say that there is no such thing as an out of context quote in theater. Every word is on purpose and every word matters. An image used in one scene with one character may foreshadow an event in another scene with a different character. The Old Man's Diary also addresses the idea that politics is theater. Every political campaign has a theatrical dimension. The archetypal image of a campaign is a man or woman addressing a crowd. Whatever else that may be, it's theater! Democrats aren't comfortable with theater. Republicans make good use of it. Republicans think they are too good. Examine John McCain and Mitt Romney's words and images below and see, as often happens with good Art, the unintended consequences that leak out around the edges. My headline says that McCain calls for Bush-Cheney to resign. McCain would not admit it, Mitt Romney will deny it. Their words tell a different story. In this clip from 19 Sep 2008 John McCain invokes the image of Commander (/President) Eisenhower, ready to accept responsibility for his actions. It is clear that evoking the image of the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe does not fit for asking the Chairman of the SEC to resign. On Monday Sep 22, John McCain suggested a bipartisan oversight board to add an additional layer of bureaucracy to the bailout of Wall Street and suggested Mitt Romney be included on that board. By nightfall, Mitt was on the election team telling the tale of Maverick. Another interesting series of images to illustrate Maverick McCain being opposed to the President and asking "The Worst In History" to resign. Why these words? Why this image of "the worst in history?" Mitt Romney, touted for his business acumen, does not know what SEC rule it is that McCain supported that would allow investment banks to become more heavily leveraged. He does know what the trouble is at the heart of our economy, something everybody was excited about, and that was, giving loans to people who really didn't have the ability to repay them. Boomp3.com And finally, maybe offering a bit more help than Maverick wants, here is a remix of where Romney thinks McCain is from, now that he is talking about nothing but change. "I think he's doing what he thinks is right." == As I said above, this is theater not a court of law. It is ART. Because these people are performing, every word matters and nothing can be taken out of context. It all matters, the intended and unintended consequences. A good artist will have somewhat of a control over the unintended consequences and embrace them. Charlatans, like the men occupying the East and West wings of the White House, will whine about context like they are in a court of law and deny unintended meanings derived from their words. Although I do hope the charlatans end up in that court, these men and all our politicians, are simply doing Theater and try as they might to misdirect, all the images the viewer can make of their words count. The only boundaries are a given performance, a work of ART and it stands on its own. Therefore, I hear John McCain and Mitt Romney asking George Bush and Dick Cheney to accept responsibility for their crimes and resign their elected offices. Listen to the whole segment 9:22 or stream at MSNBC Bush Doctrine -- hehe, wait for the punchlineSubmitted by jbenet on Fri, 09/12/2008 - 3:37pm.And I thought the Bush Doctrine was "catapult(ing) the propaganda" search wh site - bush+doctrine- Of the 71 results from the search, 56 are attributed to the Vice President. the first being, 23 0ct 01. As the president said in Shanghai, this is a fight to save the civilized world and values common to the West, to Asia and to Islam. This is a struggle against evil, against an enemy that rejoices in the murder of innocent, unsuspecting human beings. That is why people in every part of the world and of all faiths stand together against this foe. The president has made very clear that in this conflict there is no neutral ground; those who harbor terrorists share guilt for the acts they commit. CHENEY: Under the Bush doctrine, a regime that harbors or supports terrorists will be regarded as hostile to the United States of America. == The day before POTUS signed the The Shanghai Accord. 20 Oct 01 ... I guess we call you General. (Laughter.) That means you all are in the Army. (Laughter.) And I am glad you are. To meet that obligation, a wartime reorganization is underway at the Justice Department. More investigators will go to front lines. The federal government will work more closely with state and local authorities -- and so will you. Agents will receive better training and new technology, to help track and capture terrorists or those who support them. And these changes are essential, and I want to thank the Attorney General and Director Mueller for beginning this transformation. I have also reserved the option of trial by military commission for foreign terrorists who wage war against our country. Non-citizens, non-U.S. citizens who plan and/or commit mass murder are more than criminal suspects. They are unlawful combatants who seek to destroy our country and our way of life. And if I determine that it is in the national security interest of our great land to try by military commission those who make war on America, then we will do so. (Applause.) So what is the Bush Doctrine really? "You're paid to lie" ( The president says "Al led the effort" and reversing the audio he says "you're paid to lie." I'm wondering, did the RNC pay for these trips,or did we? Issues Budget Management Education Energy Health Care Homeland Security Hurricane Recovery Immigration ... THE VICE PRESIDENT: As we say in Wyoming -- (laughter) -- you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but at the end of the day, it's still a pig. (Applause.) John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, he's working very hard to cover it up. Now, we got into the campaign, of course, and he's trying hard to cover up the fact that he voted against the first Gulf War; against Operation Desert Storm; voted against most of the weapons systems that President Reagan used to keep the peace and win the Cold War. But the point is that no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much spin he tries to put on it, that you can't cover that record up with a little tough talk during the course of the campaign, that as we say in Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but in the end of the day, it's still a pig. (Laughter and applause.) The amazing thing is you can tell that story in any state in America and they get it. (Laughter.) You got anything you want to add -- MRS. CHENEY: No -- AUDIENCE MEBER: We love you, Cheney. THE VICE PRESIDENT: All right, I love you guys. John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. Or as we say out in our home state of Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but it's still a pig. (Laughter.) John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. He is not a steadfast leader. And our President is. (Applause.) John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. AUDIENCE: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years! (Applause.) THE VICE PRESIDENT: Oh, I'm having trouble concentrating. (Laughter.) John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs. AUDIENCE MEMBER: (Inaudible.) THE VICE PRESIDENT: Who's got the pig? (Laughter.) John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. What Wednesday night so clearly revealed is that John Kerry does not have the judgment or the conviction that America needs in a President. What last night so clearly revealed is that John Kerry is not a man of strong character. He is not a steadfast leader. AUDIENCE: Flip-flop! Flip-flop! Flip-flop! THE VICE PRESIDENT: I don't know what you're going to do with this crowd, Adam. (Laughter and applause.)
